Responding To The Storm: Exploring The Psychological Support Of Emergency Responders After The May 2004 Storms In Southeast Nebraska, Denise Bulling, Stacey Hoffman, Martin Klein, Brooke Olsen, Harry Walles Oct 2006

Responding To The Storm: Exploring The Psychological Support Of Emergency Responders After The May 2004 Storms In Southeast Nebraska, Denise Bulling, Stacey Hoffman, Martin Klein, Brooke Olsen, Harry Walles

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

A large number of emergency personnel were involved in the response to the May 2004 storms that devastated a 52 mile swath of Southeast Nebraska. Emergency workers who responded the night of the storm were exposed to bad weather, darkness, and uncertainty about their own safety. Later, they were asked to work alongside survivors and neighbors who had lost everything amidst widespread destruction of farms, homes, and businesses. Some, but not all of the emergency personnel were offered formal psychological support services like critical incident debriefing to assist with the emotional processing of the event.

The research literature is mixed …

Genetic Configurations Of Political Phenomena: New Theories, New Methods, Ira H. Carmen Oct 2006

Genetic Configurations Of Political Phenomena: New Theories, New Methods, Ira H. Carmen

Department of Political Science: Hendricks Symposium

Recent research by E.O. Wilson, James Q. Wilson, Simon, Alford-Hibbing, Carmen and others indicates that the competing social science paradigms of behavioralism and rational choice are in their last throes. Their salient weakness is insensitivity, bordering on ignorance, to politics as a biologically-orchestrated phenomenon. More specifically, political scientists know precious little about either genetics or evolutionary dynamics.

In this paper, I present a new theory--sociogenomics--to replace the shopworn conceptions of yesterday’s political science. I then demonstrate how social scientists can employ the tools of molecular biology to flesh out the genes coding for baseline political attitudes and behaviors. The theory …

Audience Effects On Moralistic Punishment, Robert Kurzban, Peter Descioli, Erin O'Brien Oct 2006

Audience Effects On Moralistic Punishment, Robert Kurzban, Peter Descioli, Erin O'Brien

Department of Political Science: Hendricks Symposium

Punishment has been proposed as being central to two distinctively human phenomena: cooperation in groups and morality. Here we investigate moralistic punishment, a behavior designed to inflict costs on another individual in response to a perceived moral violation. There is currently no consensus on which evolutionary model best accounts for this phenomenon in humans. Models that turn on individuals’ cultivating reputations as moralistic punishers clearly predict that psychological systems should be designed to increase punishment in response to information that one’s decisions to punish will be known by others. We report two experiments in which we induce participants to commit …

Genetic Characterization And Diversity Of Rathayibacter Toxicus, Irina V. Agarkova, A. K. Vidaver, E. N. Postnikova, I. T. Riley, N. W. Schaad

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Rathayibacter toxicus is a nematode-vectored gram-positive bacterium responsible for a gumming disease of grasses and production of a highly potent animal and human toxin that is often fatal to livestock and has a history of occurring in unexpected circumstances. DNA of 22 strains of R. toxicus from Australia were characterized using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). AFLP analysis grouped the 22 strains into three genetic clusters that correspond to their geographic origin. The mean similarity between the three clusters was 85 to 86%. PFGE analysis generated three different banding patterns that enabled typing the strains …

Distance-Based Genome Rearrangement Phylogeny, Li-San Wang, Tandy Warnow, Bernard M.E. Moret, Robert K. Jansen, Linda A. Raubeson Oct 2006

Distance-Based Genome Rearrangement Phylogeny, Li-San Wang, Tandy Warnow, Bernard M.E. Moret, Robert K. Jansen, Linda A. Raubeson

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Evolution operates on whole genomes through direct rearrangements of genes, such as inversions, transpositions, and inverted transpositions, as well as through operations, such as duplications, losses, and transfers, that also affect the gene content of the genomes. Because these events are rare relative to nucleotide substitutions, gene order data offer the possibility of resolving ancient branches in the tree of life; the combination of gene order data with sequence data also has the potential to provide more robust phylogenetic reconstructions, since each can elucidate evolution at different time scales. Distance corrections greatly improve the accuracy of phylogeny reconstructions from DNA …

Preliminary Finite Element Modeling Of A Piezoelectric Actuated Marine Propulsion Fin, Andrew Streett Oct 2006

Preliminary Finite Element Modeling Of A Piezoelectric Actuated Marine Propulsion Fin, Andrew Streett

Theses

New technologies surrounding composite materials and autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) design have led to numerous studies involving the marine propulsion for these AUVs. AUVs traditionally are classified as highly efficient, payload capable, and can be utilized as reconnaissance or surveillance vehicles. Undullatory and oscillatory propulsion devices have been conceived to replace the present propulsion technologies, of propellers, with highly maneuverable, efficient, and quiet propulsion systems. Undullatory and oscillatory propulsion has been around for centuries employed by aquatic life, but only recently have the mini-technologies been available to present such propulsion devices economically and with enough materials research as to mimic …

Philosophical Views About Digital Information And Relational Schemata, Markos Dendrinos Oct 2006

Philosophical Views About Digital Information And Relational Schemata, Markos Dendrinos

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The nature and organization of digital information are examined from a philosophical point of view. A Platonic model is first suggested, based on both the Platonic allegory of the two worlds and the hypothesis of the informationised universe. Ancient classification schemata are presented in terms of the relationship types involved, concluding with an attempt to view the semantically rich web management system as an extended Platonic model.

Technological Change, Universal Access, And The End Of The Library, Wayne Bivens-Tatum Oct 2006

Technological Change, Universal Access, And The End Of The Library, Wayne Bivens-Tatum

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Library and Information Science (LIS) does not lend itself to philosophizing. Political philosophy offers a useful and necessary approach to thinking about libraries. Teleological thinking helps bring into relief some of the problems and issues of library and information science. When we do not address political problems teleologically, we may confuse means and ends, and ignore ends altogether. As an example of a teleological investigation, the author considers a proposition that some take to be the end of the library, the proposition that libraries should provide free access to all information to all persons all of the time. Should libraries …

Blazing The Trail In Poverty Alleviation Among University Students In Nigeria: The Federal University Of Technology, Yola, Baba L. Ndagana, S. A. Ogunrombi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study reports on the innovative “study and work” programme for students at the Federal University of Technology, Yola. In particular, the use of student part-time workers in the Library is discussed. The study reviews the widespread and severe poverty in Nigeria and among students in particular. This study reveals that the “study and work scheme” to alleviate poverty is beneficial to both students and university departments. The scheme extolls the dignity of labour in addition to alleviating the suffering of indigent students. The advantages of the scheme to the Library are discussed and it is recommended that the “study and …
