A Risk Analysis Of Ambrosia Furniture Company, Jared Foster Martin Jan 2006

A Risk Analysis Of Ambrosia Furniture Company, Jared Foster Martin

Honors Theses

The following analysis was created upon request from Ambrosia Furniture Company in an attempt to fully identify, analyze, and address exposure to risk. In order to evaluate and identify specific areas of risk, the report takes into consideration financial records, history of losses, and reviews company policies. These areas of risk were then further examined and analyzed to determine what actions and managerial techniques would best minimize their costs and effects. With these principles in mind, this report has further delineated these exposures into five primary groups. These groups were then correlated so as to allow for a more efficient …

The Common Law As An Iterative Process: A Preliminary Inquiry, Lawrence A. Cunningham Jan 2006

The Common Law As An Iterative Process: A Preliminary Inquiry, Lawrence A. Cunningham

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The common law often is casually referred to as an iterative process without much attention given to the detailed attributes such processes exhibit. This Article explores this characterization, uncovering how common law as an iterative process is one of endless repetition that is simultaneously stable and dynamic, self-similar but evolving, complex yet simple. These attributes constrain the systemic significance of judicial discretion and also confirm the wisdom of traditional approaches to studying and learning law. As an iterative system, common law exhibits what physicists call sensitive dependence on initial conditions. This generates a path dependency from which it may be …

Coordination, Property & Intellectual Property: An Unconventional Approach To Anticompetitive Effects & Downstream Access, F. Scott Kieff Jan 2006

Coordination, Property & Intellectual Property: An Unconventional Approach To Anticompetitive Effects & Downstream Access, F. Scott Kieff

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Countless high profile cases like the recent patent litigation threatening to shut down the BlackBerry® service have long drawn sharp criticism; and in response, most of the intellectual property (IP) literature argues for the use of weaker, or liability rule, enforcement as a tool for solving the problems of anticompetitive effects and downstream access while still providing sufficient rewards to IP creators. This paper takes an unconventional approach under which rewards don't matter much, but coordination does matter a great deal. The paper shows how stronger, or property rule, enforcement facilitates the good type of coordination that increases competition and …

Sex In The City Of God, Diana Macalintal Jan 2006

Sex In The City Of God, Diana Macalintal

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

The Church does not canonize saints; it canonizes causes, lifestyles, and attitudes. This is increasingly evident in the causes for lay people, especially married couples. Although it has made recent strides toward a more balanced theology of sexuality, the Catholic Church will not be comfortable canonizing happily married, sexually active couples until Mary is valued as a disciple and not exclusively as a virgin. Through an examination and evaluation of the explicit and implicit theology of sexuality as found in Scripture, Church teaching, and the canonization process, this paper will propose a new theology of sexuality based on a re-visioning …

Questioning The Banana Republic: A Comparative Case Study Of The Implications For Local Workers Of The United Fruit Companies' Operations In Ecuador And Colombia, Ryan Kenneth Bullock Jan 2006

Questioning The Banana Republic: A Comparative Case Study Of The Implications For Local Workers Of The United Fruit Companies' Operations In Ecuador And Colombia, Ryan Kenneth Bullock

Honors Theses

The market for internationally traded bananas has grown considerably throughout the 20“^ century, with bananas being grown almost entirely in developing countries and the vast majority of imports destined for developed countries’ markets. Historically, the global banana trade has been dominated by just a few large transnational corporations (TNCs), and if there has been once constant in the evolution of the global banana market in the Americas throughout the twentieth century, then it has been the United Fruit Company. The role of the United Fruit Company within the global banana market has been the subject of significant study and analysis, …

Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications

Effects of sprint training on plasma K+ concentration ([K+]) regulation during intense exercise and on muscle Na+-K+-ATPase were investigated in subjects with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) under real-life conditions and in nondiabetic subjects(CON). Eight subjects with T1D and seven CON undertook 7 wk of sprint cycling training. Before training, subjects cycled to exhaustion at 130% peak O2 uptake. After training, identical work was performed. Arterialized venous blood was drawn at rest, during exercise, and at recovery and analyzed for plasma glucose, [K+], Na+ concentration ([Na+]), catecholamines, …

Observed Web Robot Behavior On Decaying Web Subsites, Joan A. Smith, Frank Mccown, Michael L. Nelson Jan 2006

Observed Web Robot Behavior On Decaying Web Subsites, Joan A. Smith, Frank Mccown, Michael L. Nelson

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We describe the observed crawling patterns of various search engines (including Google, Yahoo and MSN) as they traverse a series of web subsites whose contents decay at predetermined rates. We plot the progress of the crawlers through the subsites, and their behaviors regarding the various file types included in the web subsites. We chose decaying subsites because we were originally interested in tracking the implication of using search engine caches for digital preservation. However, some of the crawling behaviors themselves proved to be interesting and have implications on using a search engine as an interface to a digital library.

Engineering Education Through Service-Learning In Developing Communities: Two Case Studies, Evan A. Thomas, Andrew Azman Jan 2006

Engineering Education Through Service-Learning In Developing Communities: Two Case Studies, Evan A. Thomas, Andrew Azman

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper provides case studies of two service learning projects that University of Colorado at Boulder (CU-Boulder) students are integrating into their academic experience. The projects focus on developing communities and are managed under the auspices of Engineers Without Borders-USA (EWB-USA), a group founded by Dr. Bernard Amadei, Professor of Civil Engineering at CU-Boulder. These projects expand students? understanding of the social value of their chosen profession, and expose them to a type of engineering significantly different than what is presented in most of their classes. Specifically, focusing on developing communities provides students with the opportunity to design solutions to …

Pharmacological Dissociation Of Anxiety Model In The Chick Separation Stress Paradigm, Robert Thomas Wicks Jan 2006

Pharmacological Dissociation Of Anxiety Model In The Chick Separation Stress Paradigm, Robert Thomas Wicks

Honors Theses

The chick separation stress paradigm has been validated as an anxiolytic screening assay. However, whether the paradigm better models Panic Disorder (PD) or Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is unknown. To pharmacologically dissociate the chick separation stress paradigm as a model of PD or GAD, subjects were administered drug probes that were either: 1) only effective in the treatment of PD (phenelzine 3.125-25.0 mg/kg), 2) effective in the treatment of both PD and GAD (alprazolam 0.065-0.5 mg/kg; clonidine 0.1-0.25 mg/kg; imipramine 1.0-15.0mg/kg), 3) only effective in the treatment of GAD (buspirone 2.5-10.0 mg/kg; trazodone 0.1-3.0 mg/kg), or 4) capable of exacerbating …
