Nematodes In Western Australian Vineyards, Vivien Vanstone, Neil Lantzke Jan 2006

Nematodes In Western Australian Vineyards, Vivien Vanstone, Neil Lantzke

Bulletins 4000 -

Nematodes are worm-like microscopic animals that live in the soil. There are numerous soil-inhabiting nematode species, but not all are harmful to plants. Some nematodes are plant-parasitic, feeding on and damaging roots, including those of grapevine. Feeding activities of these nematodes reduce the vine’s ability to take up water and nutrients from the soil, leading to lack of vigour, symptoms of nutrient deficiency, wilting, lower yield, vine decline and, in severe cases, vine death. Nematode feeding sites can also lead to entry of other disease-causing organisms (e.g. fungi or bacteria), resulting in rapid vine decline.

Nematodes can survive in the …

Australian Plague Locust (Chortoicetes Terminifera), Department Of Agriculture And Food, Wa Jan 2006

Australian Plague Locust (Chortoicetes Terminifera), Department Of Agriculture And Food, Wa

Bulletins 4000 -

The Australian plague locust (APL) is the most economically important grasshopper in Australia. The immature hopper stage damages mainly pastures in farming areas, and gardens and lawns in domestic areas. They tend to avoid established green crops, although the edges of crops can be damaged. Adult locusts can form swarms and fly into other areas, damaging pastures, ripening cereal, lupin and pulse crops, grapevines, fruit trees and native tree seedlings. If crops have completely dried off before locusts begin flying, the possibility of damage is considerably less.

Modeling Of The Cardiovascular System With Integrated Finite Element And Electrical Analog Methods, Rumei Dong Jan 2006

Modeling Of The Cardiovascular System With Integrated Finite Element And Electrical Analog Methods, Rumei Dong

Open Access Dissertations

In this study, a model of the cardiovascular system was developed by integrating a finite element model of the left ventricle (LV) with an electrical analog model of the circulatory system. The integrated model related the regional LV wall impairment with its overall hemodynamic consequences. The model and simulation system was completely implemented in customized C++ software. Applications of the model for studying cardiovascular dynamics and surgical ventricular restoration were demonstrated. A finite element method was applied to a two-dimensional (2D) long-axis slice of the LV wall. The three-dimensional (3D) LV geometry was interpolated from two LV slices, one representing …

The "Cosmic Covenant" In The Letter To The Hebrews, Jeffrey P. Walker Jan 2006

The "Cosmic Covenant" In The Letter To The Hebrews, Jeffrey P. Walker

Master's Theses

The Topic The "cosmic covenant" in Hebrews reflects three main ideas: There exists a close affinity between the letter and Enochic Judaism; the letter is a product of Roman Gentile Christianity that emerged as a response to Jewish particularists in the Second Temple covenantal debate; and the writer's cosmic perspective had the simultaneous effect of supplanting and universalizing the Jewish covenantal concept. The Purpose The thesis offered here is that Hebrews presupposes a notion of "cosmic covenant" similar to that found in Enochic Judaism. Conclusions What has emerged is support for how the universalistic scope of 1 Enoch and its …

Eliciting Facial Expressions In Children With And Without Down Syndrome, Orietta Coz Jan 2006

Eliciting Facial Expressions In Children With And Without Down Syndrome, Orietta Coz

Master's Theses

This study investigated facial expressions of children between the ages of 10 and 15 years with Down Syndrome (experimental group) and compared them to typically developing children (control group). Elicitation of facial expressions was carried out through showings of video clips. Trained observers were used to code expressions of happiness, anger, and disgust from video recordings that were made of the children’s reactions while they watched the video clips.

I hypothesized that Down Syndrome children will not differ from typically developing children in the frequency of elicited happy expressions. However, I expected them to differ in the frequency of elicited …

Age-Related Alterations In The Dynamics Of L-Glutamate Regulation In The Striatum Of The Fischer 344 Rat, Justin Robert Nickell Jan 2006

Age-Related Alterations In The Dynamics Of L-Glutamate Regulation In The Striatum Of The Fischer 344 Rat, Justin Robert Nickell

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

L-glutamate is the predominant excitatory amino acid neurotransmitter inthe mammalian central nervous system. Prior aging studies have focusedprimarily on dopaminergic circuitry of the striatum, and data obtained studyingglutamate regulation in the striatum have been largely equivocal. Thesediscrepancies are due in large part to the limitations of microdialysis; while it isextremely sensitive to minute concentrations of analyte, it is lacking in terms ofthe temporal resolution necessary to study a neurotransmitter with rapid releaseand clearance kinetics such as glutamate. In order to address this matter, ourlaboratory has designed a ceramic-based multisite microelectrode with thecapability to detect and analyze fluctuations in extracellular glutamateconcentrations …

Basis Variability And Its Effects On Hedging Efficiency For Kentucky Feeder Cattle, Nathaniel J. Routt Jan 2006

Basis Variability And Its Effects On Hedging Efficiency For Kentucky Feeder Cattle, Nathaniel J. Routt

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Kentucky plays a vital role in the beef supply chain. The cow/calf producers,back-grounding operations, and order buying industry are important parts of Kentucky'sagricultural economy. Basis risk is an issue that affects these groups in a negative way. Agood estimate of the expected basis must be available to make hedging efficient.Simulations were performed on Kentucky price data to determine the effectiveness ofshort hedging for Kentucky producers. A model was also used to describe some of thefactors that determine basis levels. The research revealed that it is difficult to predictbasis within an acceptable range to make short hedging with futures efficient. Eventhough …

Trade And Morality: Preserving "Public Morals" Without Sacrificing The Global Economy, Miguel A. Gonzalez Jan 2006

Trade And Morality: Preserving "Public Morals" Without Sacrificing The Global Economy, Miguel A. Gonzalez

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The World Trade Organization (WTO) exists for the purpose of promoting and facilitating trade amongst its member nations. When those member nations acceded to the WTO's agreements, however, they acknowledged that sometimes trade barriers are useful tools in protecting themselves from certain evils. This Note addresses one of those useful tools--the public morals exception--which allows a member nation to maintain trade barriers with respect to certain goods or services.

Since the WTO agreements have been in effect, the public morals has lacked two critical things.: a definition and boundaries. This Note will attempt to define the public morals exception in …

Religion, Division, And The First Amendment, Richard W. Garnett Jan 2006

Religion, Division, And The First Amendment, Richard W. Garnett

Journal Articles

Nearly thirty-five years ago, in Lemon v. Kurtzman, Chief Justice Warren Burger declared that state programs or policies could excessive(ly) - and, therefore, unconstitutionally - entangle government and religion, not only by requiring or allowing intrusive public monitoring of religious institutions and activities, but also through what he called their divisive political potential. Chief Justice Burger asserted also, and more fundamentally, that political division along religious lines was one of the principal evils against which the First Amendment was intended to protect. And from this Hobbesian premise about the inten(t) animating the First Amendment, he proceeded on the assumption that …

Object-Oriented Lr(1) Parser Generation, Christopher Luckett Jan 2006

Object-Oriented Lr(1) Parser Generation, Christopher Luckett

Theses

The LR parser has been around for a long time, and its workings, especially with respect to table compaction and use of the lookahead sets, have puzzled students who are new to the area of study. The aim of this project therefore is to provide an object oriented approach and discoverable algorithm to ease the difficulty of mastering these concepts. This will be accomplished by distributing the table interpreter across objects whose inter-relationships create an analogue to the state table. Hopefully this will provide a greater degree of readability and ease of trace throughout the parser generation process.

A Hundred Osamas: Islamist Threats And The Future Of Counterinsurgency, Sherifa D. Zuhur Dr. Jan 2006

A Hundred Osamas: Islamist Threats And The Future Of Counterinsurgency, Sherifa D. Zuhur Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

This monograph takes its title from President Hosni Mubarak's prediction that American involvement in Iraq would give rise to a "hundred Osamas." The author explores "the new jihad" and the regeneration of Islamist insurgencies and extremist movements in the context of religious and political movements throughout the Muslim world. It describes the contributions of various Islamist leaders to this discourse of extremism and how their strategies of recruitment, retention and engagement function. In contrast, various U.S. responses to extremists are critiqued, and new elements of a counterstrategy are proposed.

Dynamics Of Action Potential Duration: Effects On Restitution And Repolarization Alternans, Runze Wu Jan 2006

Dynamics Of Action Potential Duration: Effects On Restitution And Repolarization Alternans, Runze Wu

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The presented studies investigate dynamics of action potential duration (APD) tobetter understand the underlying mechanism for repolarization alternans. We recorded trans-membrane potentials (TMP) in canine endocardial muscle tissueusing standard glass microelectrode under the control of an explicit diastolic interval (DI)control pacing protocol, i.e. feedback protocol. During sequential sinusoidal DI activation, the trajectory of APD dynamics has multiple values of APD correspondent to the sameDI, i.e. restitution is a bi-modal relationship. Our results indicate that: 1) there is a delay, similar to hysteresis, of change in APD responding to change in DI, 2) and the timecourse of the delay is asymmetric for fast or …

Vazquez-Prokopec, M. A. Lauricella, M. M. Orozco, M. Roberto Cortinas, A. G. Schijman, M. J. Levin, Uriel Kitron, R. E. Gürtlera

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Long-term variations in the dynamics and intensity of sylvatic transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi were investigated around eight rural villages in the semiarid Argentine Chaco in 2002–2004 and compared to data collected locally in 1984–1991. Of 501 wild mammals from 13 identified species examined by xenodiagnosis, only 3 (7.9%) of 38 Didelphis albiventris opossums and 1 (1.1%) of 91 Conepatus chinga skunks were infected by T. cruzi. The period prevalence in opossums was fourfold lower in 2002–2004 than in 1984–1991 (32–36%). The infection prevalence of skunks also decreased five-fold from 4.1–5.6% in 1984–1991 to 1.1% in 2002–2004. Infection in opossums increased …

Relative Index Of Susceptibility To The Maize Weevil, Sitophilus Zeamais, Among Some Qpm Corn Lines, Jamilton P. Santos, Paulo E. O. Guimaraes, Jose M. Waquil, John E. Foster

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais, is one important pest of stored corn grain. It is difficult to control and causes large weight and nutritional losses to the grains. The discovery of the gene Opaque-2 (O-2) that enhances the protein quality with Lysine and Tryptophane opened new perspectives to use corn to feed monogastric animals and for human nutrition. However, the soft and farinaceous consistency of the endosperm in the O-2 gene corn increased the susceptibility to maize weevil. To solve this problem the O-2 gene was transferred to normal corn. This new corn was called Quality Protein Maize (QPM). …
