A recently developed standard-model extension (SME) formalism for neutrino oscillations that includes Lorentz and CPT violation is used to analyze the sidereal time variation of the neutrino event excess measured by the liquid scintillator neutrino detector (LSND) experiment. The LSND experiment, performed at Los Alamos National Laboratory, observed an excess, consistent with neutrino oscillations, of ν̄e in a beam of ν̄μ. It is determined that the LSND oscillation signal is consistent with no sidereal variation. However, there are several combinations of SME coefficients that describe the LSND data; both with and without sidereal variations. The scale of Lorentz and CPT …

Directional transport of the phytohormone auxin is required for the establishment and maintenance of plant polarity, but the underlying molecular mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. Plant homologs of human multiple drug resistance/P-glycoproteins (MDR/PGPs) have been implicated in auxin transport, as defects in MDR1 (AtPGP19) and AtPGP1 result in reductions of growth and auxin transport in Arabidopsis (atpgp1, atpgp19), maize (brachytic2) and sorghum (dwarf3). Here we examine the localization, activity, substrate specificity and inhibitor sensitivity of AtPGP1. AtPGP1 exhibits non-polar plasma membrane localization at the shoot and root apices, as well as polar localization above the root apex. Protoplasts from …

Intruder Level And Deformation In The Sd-Pair Shell Model, Yan A.N. Luo, Chairul Bahri, Feng Pan, V. G. Gueorguiev, Jerry P. Draayer

Faculty Publications

The influence of the intruder level on nuclear deformation is studied within the framework of the nucleon-pair shell model, truncated to an SD-pair subspace. The results suggest that the intruder level has a tendency to reduce the deformation for nuclei in lower and middle shells, and plays an important role in determining the onset of rotational behavior. © World Scientific Publishing Company.

Limitations On The Utility Of Exact Master Equations, G. W. Ford, R. F. O'Connell Oct 2005

Limitations On The Utility Of Exact Master Equations, G. W. Ford, R. F. O'Connell

Faculty Publications

The low temperature solution of the exact master equation for an oscillator coupled to a linear passive heat bath is known to give rise to serious divergences. We now show that, even in the high temperature regime, problems also exist, notably the fact that the density matrix is not necessarily positive. © 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Entropy Of A Quantum Oscillator Coupled To A Heat Bath And Implications For Quantum Thermodynamics, G. W. Ford, R. F. O'Connell

Faculty Publications

The free energy of a quantum oscillator in an arbitrary heat bath at temperature T is given by a "remarkable formula" which involves only a single integral. This leads to a corresponding simple result for the entropy. The low-temperature limit is examined in detail and explicit results are obtained both for the case of an Ohmic heat bath and a radiation heat bath. More general heat bath models are also examined. In all cases it is found that the entropy vanishes at zero temperature, in conformity with the third law of thermodynamics (Nernst's theorem). © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights …

Classical And Quantum General Relativity: A New Paradigm, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin Oct 2005

Classical And Quantum General Relativity: A New Paradigm, Rodolfo Gambini, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We argue that recent developments in discretizations of classical and quantum gravity imply a new paradigm for doing research in these areas. The paradigm consists in discretizing the theory in such a way that the resulting discrete theory has no constraints. This solves many of the hard conceptual problems of quantum gravity. It also appears as a useful tool in some numerical simulations of interest in classical relativity. We outline some of the salient aspects and results of this new framework. © Springer-Verlag 2005.

Wooster Magazine: 2001-2010

This edition of the Wooster Magazine was published in the fall of 2005. The magazine begins with an introductory piece by the editor, Lisa Watts, on her experience with the mentorship program. The Viewpoint section touches on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. John Dean '61 opened the 2005 Wooster Forum series by criticizing the Bush administration. The radio station, now called WOO 91, has been undergoing renovations for the past year and they are finally complete. Five student leaders in religious groups on campus are featured from page ten to fifteen. Four alumni that work some way with religion are …

The Community Income Theory Of The Charitable Contributions Deduction, Johnny Rex Buckles Oct 2005

The Community Income Theory Of The Charitable Contributions Deduction, Johnny Rex Buckles

Indiana Law Journal

The charitable contributions deduction, a longstanding yet controversial feature of the Internal Revenue Code, has been justified under subsidy theories and tax-base theories. Focusing on the latter, this Article presents and explains a new tax-base theory in support of the charitable contributions deduction-the community income theory. This theory posits that some income, designated as "community income, " is properly excluded from the personal income tax base because it is more naturally attributed to the community than to the individual members of the community. Adopting the presumption that the community generally should be treated as a tax exempt entity, this Article …

The Kindynamic Theory Of Tort, Christopher P. Guzelian Oct 2005

The Kindynamic Theory Of Tort, Christopher P. Guzelian

Indiana Law Journal

Commentators complain of two major deficiencies in modern tort law: (1) that liability concepts such as "negligence" or "duty " are so vacuously defined as to permit inadvertent subjectivity and error to hinder proper case adjudication, and (2) that tort is too slow in recognizing newly discovered risks and properly compensating nascent classes of injury. We accordingly report on the Kindynamic Theory, an emerging philosophy that overcomes these twin deficiencies and sharpens understanding of poorly articulated tort intuitions

Kindynamics contends that causation is the cornerstone of tort, and that all risks are, at core, causal propositions. Contrary to its many …

The Achaemenid Empire In South Asia And Recent Excavations In Akra In Northwest Pakistan, Peter Magee, Cameron Petrie, Robert Knox, Farid Khan, Ken Thomas

Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology Faculty Research and Scholarship

The impact of the Achaemenid annexation of northwestern Pakistan has remained a focus for archaeological research for more than a century. A lack of well-stratified settlements and a focus on artifacts that are not necessarily appropriate for assessing the effects of imperial control have until now obfuscated our understanding of this issue. In this article, we present the results of three seasons of excavations at Akra located in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan. Although research was cut short in 2001 by global events, our preliminary results indicate that the relation;;hip between urbanism, trade, and the Achaemenid annexation was …

Comparing The Gut Flora Of Irish Breastfed And Formula-Fed Neonates Aged Between Birth And 6 Weeks Old, Gordon Cooke, John Behan, Nicola Clarke, Winifred Gorman, Mary Costello

Articles

The exact composition of the complex microsystem that constitutes the gut flora continues to be explored as molecular methodology supplements traditional microbiological studies. The current study reports a random analysis of the faecal flora composition for 31 neonates in the 0–1 day age group, 41 neonates aged 2–5 days and 33 6-week-old neonates. All infants, born at the National Maternity Hospital, Ireland, were considered healthy, full-term normal deliveries and were either exclusively breastfed or formula-fed from birth. Microbiological and biochemical analyses of the faecal samples were used to specifically enumerate Lactobacillus spp., Bifidobacterium spp., Enterococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp., Bacteroides spp., …

A Survey Of Data Warehousing Success Issues, Hongjiang Xu, Mark I. Hwang

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Data warehousing is an important area of practice and research, yet few studies have assessed its practices in general and critical success factors in particular. Although many guidelines for implementation exist, most are derived from anecdotal evidence. A survey of data warehousing professionals was conducted to gain insight into data warehousing success issues. The results reveal that data warehousing success is a multi-faceted construct and that improved productivity is the most valued measure for success. The results also put clearly defined business needs/benefits and source data quality at the top of the list of critical success factors. In addition, different …
