Population Dynamics Of Oryzomys Palustris And Microtus Pennsylvanicus In Virginia Tidal Marshes, Christopher P. Bloch, Robert K. Rose
Population Dynamics Of Oryzomys Palustris And Microtus Pennsylvanicus In Virginia Tidal Marshes, Christopher P. Bloch, Robert K. Rose
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Oryzomys palustris (marsh rice rat) and Microtus pennsylvanicus (meadow vole) cohabit coastal marshes in the mid-Atlantic US. Both were live-trapped for 23 months at two tidal marsh sites in Virginia to assess their demography near the margins of their distributions. In the presence of dense vegetation, population dynamics of the two species were seasonal and positively correlated, with densities declining through the winter. At the more sparsely vegetated site, densities of both species were lower, and densities of M. pennsylvanicus were negatively correlated with those of O. palustris. Patterns of reproduction differed between the species. O. palustris was reproductively …
The Economic Value Of Supplier Working Relations With Automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers, Matthew J. Milas
The Economic Value Of Supplier Working Relations With Automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers, Matthew J. Milas
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Do the different approaches automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) take to working relations with their suppliers affect economic variables that impact bottom line results? This study is focused on exploring this question through four hypotheses:
1. Cooperative-trusting relationships lead to reduced costs of sourced materials and overhead.
2. Cooperative-trusting relationships lead to increased levels of innovation with a lower investment in research and development.
3. Cooperative-trusting relationships lead to improved product quality.
4. Cooperative-trusting relationships lead to better resource management of inventory.
Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) was used to perform regression analyses on panel series data. All four hypotheses were …
Investigation Of The Optical, Thermal, And Mechanical Properties Of A Bulk Polymer Using The Surface Thermal Lensing Technique, Bushra Hussain
Investigation Of The Optical, Thermal, And Mechanical Properties Of A Bulk Polymer Using The Surface Thermal Lensing Technique, Bushra Hussain
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The sensitive and simple photothermal technique of Surface Thermal Lensing (STL) was employed to study the thermo-mechanical response of an amorphous polycarbonate as a bulk. A discussion is given of how previously developed theories did not fit well with the present work. Therefore, only qualitative analysis and discussion of the experimental results is made, emphasizing the influence of various factors on the STL signal. The work here is mainly a study of the dependence of the STL signal on the modulated pump beam frequency. The effect on the STL signal of thermal and mechanical relaxation in the thermally stimulated area …
The Fear Of Death And The Fear Of Dying: Possible Barriers To Altruistic Behavior, Jennifer Haskin Corwin
The Fear Of Death And The Fear Of Dying: Possible Barriers To Altruistic Behavior, Jennifer Haskin Corwin
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Research in the study of the fear of death and dying and the study of altruism implies that there is a dynamic relationship between the two fields. Rarely, if ever, has a direct connection been made. This study is an effort to further explore the relationship that exists between the fear of death and dying, altruistic behavior, self-esteem, and perceptions of a common humanity. Through the synthesis of these four key social psychological concepts, a theoretical model was developed and tested.
Through the examination and statistical analysis of quantitative data and the systematic evaluation of interview data, several connections between …

In Praise Of Carbon: Genre And The 1996 Nobel Lectures In Chemistry By Christian Fredrick Casper, Christian Fredrick Casper
In Praise Of Carbon: Genre And The 1996 Nobel Lectures In Chemistry By Christian Fredrick Casper, Christian Fredrick Casper
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Using genre theory along with the hierarchy of scientific statement types of Latour and Woolgar (1979) and the scientific stases and scientific topoi of Prelli (1989), this thesis analyzes the three Nobel lectures in chemistry from 1996 to discern the characteristics of ceremonial discourse in science and its relation to scientific ethos. Throughout, the Nobel lectures are analyzed in reference to the original research reports published in the scientific literature. The unique social context of the Nobel lectures results in a distinct genre with textual characteristics that include statements with little moderation or hedging, arguments for the long-term significance of …

This book is an attempt to understand Jorge Luis Borges’s ideas about tango by going beyond an opposition the author himself created in his writing. In spite of being Argentinean, Borges frequently complained about the excessive local color, the exaggerated emotions, and the histrionic performances associated with this musical form. At the same time, he declared he had witnessed, in his childhood, the execution of a different form of tango, more brave and epic, more sober and simple. The world of this primitive tango is a recurrence in Borges’s writing.
The particularities of this recurrence are the subject of …
Halonitromethane Treatment Using Advanced Oxidation Process: Rates, Mechanisms And Kinetic Modeling, Stuart Kirkham Cole
Halonitromethane Treatment Using Advanced Oxidation Process: Rates, Mechanisms And Kinetic Modeling, Stuart Kirkham Cole
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Halonitromethanes (HNMs) are low molecular weight halogenated disinfection-by-products (DBPs) found to be formed during ozonation, chlorination, or chloramination of waters containing natural bromide ion and nitrogenous organic matter. This work identifies the absolute rate constants for the oxidative hydroxyl radical (•OH) and reductive hydrated electron e- aq extinction of HNM compounds. Three forms of HNMs included in this study are the chlorinated, brominated, and mixed halogenated compounds. Electron pulse radiolysis and transient absorption spectroscopy were used to measure •OH and e- aq radical absolute reaction rate constants for a total of nine HNMs. To elucidate the decomposition reaction …
Tumor Response Tcf-4/Β-Catenin Regulatory Elements For Enhancing Cancer Gene Therapies, Saurabh Kumar Gupta
Tumor Response Tcf-4/Β-Catenin Regulatory Elements For Enhancing Cancer Gene Therapies, Saurabh Kumar Gupta
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Mutations in the adenomatous polyposis coli gene are frequently associated with progression of colon carcinoma and most other types of epithelial carcinomas. This usually results in stabilization of β-catenin protein levels, followed by transactivation of Tcf-4/β-catenin responsive genes. The effectiveness of a Tcf-4/β-catenin transcriptional enhancer element in combination with a c-fos or carcinoembryonic antigen promoter was tested for its ability to act as a tumor specific regulator of gene expression in a panel of human tumor and normal cell lines. Luciferase reporter assays indicated enhanced activity of the Tcf-4/β-catenin transcriptional element only in tumor cell lines, with minimal activities in …
Landscape Ecology Of Birds On Mount Leconte, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Andreas P. Damalas
Landscape Ecology Of Birds On Mount Leconte, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Andreas P. Damalas
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Landbirds form a significant component of wildlife resources in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The present study explored how forest structure and composition of deciduous-coniferous ecotones influenced diversity, richness, and relative abundance of bird species and how bird species responded to the spruce-fir community.
Using a form of the variable-circular plot method, I conducted audio-visual censuses of diurnal birds on Mount LeConte. I established 212 geo-referenced census points on six trails, which were used as gradient-oriented transects (gradsects). I measured habitat characteristics at the same census points. I used forest community types for each point on gradsects to delineate …

Use Of Force After 9/11, Stephen G. Rademaker
Chicago Journal of International Law
The events of September 11, 2001, revealed to America and the world a new threat, qualitatively different than the dangers that have faced us in the past. This new threat has required us to adopt new policies to confront it. President Bush eloquently described the threat and the Administration's policy response in an address delivered at the National Defense University on February 11 of this year. He stated: In the Cold War, Americans lived under the threat of weapons of mass destruction but believed that deterrents made those weapons a last resort. What has changed in the 21st century is …
Recalling The Case For Sovereignty, Jeremy A. Rabkin
Recalling The Case For Sovereignty, Jeremy A. Rabkin
Chicago Journal of International Law
In the spring of 2004, the question was whether forces of the American-led coalition in Iraq would fall under the direct control of the ostensibly "sovereign" government of Iraq. The United States has not been willing to put its forces under foreign control in the past and was not willing to do so in Iraq. If the interim government in Iraq, however, was heavily dependent on security assistance from coalition forces-in facing threats from an insurgency on its own territory-then it might seem a bit odd to insist that this vulnerable and dependent Iraqi government was entirely "sovereign." The same …
Humanitarian Law And Direct Participation In Hostilities By Private Contractors Or Civilian Employees, Michael N. Schmitt
Humanitarian Law And Direct Participation In Hostilities By Private Contractors Or Civilian Employees, Michael N. Schmitt
Chicago Journal of International Law
Over the past decade, many military affairs analysts have touted the advent of a "revolution in military affairs." Although generally framed in the context of those technological advances that make possible four-dimensional, network- centric warfare, it is the dramatic "civilianization" of conflict that may prove normatively more revolutionary. In no conflict has the civilian footprint supporting military operations been larger than in Iraq. This paper begins by examining civilian employee and private contractor involvement in Operation Iraqi Freedom ("OIF") as a case study in the contemporary nature of such participation. It then assesses the possibility of either de jure or …
A Comparative Analysis Of The Regulation Of State And Provincial Governments In Nafta And Gatt/Wto, Edward T. Hayes
A Comparative Analysis Of The Regulation Of State And Provincial Governments In Nafta And Gatt/Wto, Edward T. Hayes
Chicago Journal of International Law
This Article reviews the manner in which international trade regimes regulate state and provincial behavior by comparing and contrasting the "federal clauses" of the North American Free Trade Agreement ("NAFTA") and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade ("GATT")/WTO. Section II provides an overview of the current aggressive trade agenda and how subfederal actors in the United States and Canada are becoming increasingly involved in trade issues, with potential negative ramifications for the international trade system. Section III explores the constitutional distribution of powers in the United States and Canada and how this impacts the international trade system. Section IV …
Simplifying The Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act: If A Sovereign Acts Like A Private Party, Treat It Like One, Joseph F. Morrissey
Simplifying The Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act: If A Sovereign Acts Like A Private Party, Treat It Like One, Joseph F. Morrissey
Chicago Journal of International Law
This Article will begin in Section II by giving an overview of the development and structure of the FSIA. Section II will explain how the United States moved from its position in the nineteenth century of absolute sovereign immunity to the more appropriate restrictive theory of immunity that is embodied in the FSIA. Section III will then explain in detail why the current framework of the commercial activities exception to the FSIA is problematic. In this Section, the leading cases that have attempted to interpret the commercial activities exception to the FSIA will be analyzed. Finally, Section IV will present …

Preemption And Law In The Twenty-First Century, David B. Rivkin Jr., Lee A. Casey, Mark W. Delaquil
Chicago Journal of International Law
No aspect of the Bush Administration's foreign policy has caused greater consternation in Europe, at the United Nations, and among the Academy than the doctrine of "preemption." As the President has made clear, both in the 2002 National Security Strategy of the United States of America ("NSS") and in numerous other public statements, the United States claims the legal right to take military action to preempt gathering threats to its national security, with or without the sanction of the UN Security Council. Despite the outraged cries of critics, both at home and abroad, the doctrine of preemptive self-defense is well- …
Taking Self-Determination Seriously: When Can Cultural And Political Minorities Control Their Own Fate?, Paul A. Clark
Taking Self-Determination Seriously: When Can Cultural And Political Minorities Control Their Own Fate?, Paul A. Clark
Chicago Journal of International Law
One possible way to bring mass murder under international law is to abandon the principle of territorial sovereignty, that is, the idea that the "internal matters" of a state are subject only to the national laws of that state. This idea is commonly traced back to the Treaty of Westphalia of 1648, which ended the Thirty Years War. Alleged mistreatment of religious minorities had been put forth as sufficient justification for one country to invade another, but the Treaty of Westphalia decreed that how governments treat their own subjects would be regarded under international law as an internal matter. The …
The Bush Administration's Forward Strategy For Nonproliferation, John R. Bolton
The Bush Administration's Forward Strategy For Nonproliferation, John R. Bolton
Chicago Journal of International Law
It is good to be home among so many friends at the American Enterprise Institute ("AEI"). I am particularly happy that Jeremy Rabkin and AEI have just published The Case for Sovereigno: Why the World Should Welcome American Independence. I congratulate him on his far-reaching analysis, in which he reinforces that security remains the core responsibility of sovereign states. I thought it would be useful today to look at our nonproliferation policy in this context, and the degree to which the Bush Administration has launched initiatives that work cooperatively with other sovereign states to deny rogue nations and terrorists access …
Terrorism And The Laws Of War, Eric A. Posner
Terrorism And The Laws Of War, Eric A. Posner
Chicago Journal of International Law
My argument has three steps. First, I discuss the purposes of the laws of war, and argue that humanitarian considerations provide only an ambiguous rationale for limiting the weapons and tactics of warfare. Second, I discuss why some weapons and tactics are outlawed while others are not, and argue that humanitarian ideals cannot, by themselves, explain the pattern. The best explanation focuses on the enforceability of laws. I identify two conditions under which belligerents would agree on a law of war, and would be willing to comply with their agreement. The symmetry condition requires that the laws of war generate …
Treaties, Custom, Iteration, And Public Choice, John K. Setear
Treaties, Custom, Iteration, And Public Choice, John K. Setear
Chicago Journal of International Law
The basic question asked in this paper can be simply stated. Assume that, in attempting to effect international legal cooperation, a national government consciously chooses between using treaties and using customary law as the form in which to embody its cooperative efforts. Which form of international law should we expect it to choose? I analyze this question using two approaches that may be termed "rational choice" methodologies since they assume that the relevant decisionmakers rationally pursue known goals. The first approach, which I call the "iterative perspective," focuses on the efforts of a rational, public-minded government to minimize the transaction …
Toward An International Standard Of Abortion Rights: Two Obstacles, Chad M. Gerson
Toward An International Standard Of Abortion Rights: Two Obstacles, Chad M. Gerson
Chicago Journal of International Law
On July 11, 2003, the African Union ("AU") adopted a "Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa" ("Protocol"), which established a woman's right to have an abortion in cases of rape or incest or to preserve the health of the mother. Perhaps surprisingly, this Protocol is the first explicit mention of abortion rights in international law. For a variety of reasons, many international organizations have carefully avoided taking positions on positive abortion rights. Complicating the issue are the laws of some nations that affect, at least indirectly, the ability of other nations to create their own policies and develop …

A Methodology For Model Selection In Engineering Design, Rajesh Radhakrishnan, Daniel A. Mcadams
A Methodology For Model Selection In Engineering Design, Rajesh Radhakrishnan, Daniel A. Mcadams
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Engineering design consists of a series of stages during which a number of decisions need to be made by the designer. Since the information available to the designer is limited during initial design stages, to make these decisions and be able to proceed further in the design process, the designer needs to depict the nature, visualize the form, and predict the behavior of the product through the use of aids called models. These models guide these decisions; therefore, the designer needs to ensure the downstream validity of these decisions by constructing models with sufficient accuracy and resolution. Because higher quality …

Kaleidoscope Catechesis: Critique And Response To Missionary Catechesis In Africa With Particular Reference To The Diocese Of Wa In Ghana, Anthony Y. Naaeke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The question about how to appropriately incarnate the Christian message among different cultures is a perennial one. The very first Christian Council of Jerusalem (Acts 15: 1-35) dealt with this issue and throughout the centuries different cultures have continued to battle with the same issue.
Within the African context, the question arises as to how Christianity can truly be Christian and African at the same time. In other words, how can faith become culture in Africa?
The answer to this question must be rhetorical. That is to say, the proclamation (catechesis) of the Christian message must be expressed in a …
A Qualitative Analysis Of Parent Observations Of Children Diagnosed With A Developmental Speech Delay, Diana Patrick
A Qualitative Analysis Of Parent Observations Of Children Diagnosed With A Developmental Speech Delay, Diana Patrick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present study used qualitative (phenomenological) research methodology to obtain and analyze the "personal stories" of mothers of children with had received a diagnosis of either developmental apraxia of speech (DAS) or developmental phonological disorder (DPD). Using a semi-structured interview, six mothers of children with DAS and five mothers of children with DPD were asked to reflect on specific aspects of the development of their child over time, with emphasis on communication development and communication challenges. In addition to providing rich descriptions of performance, the present study addressed the proposition that DPD and DAS are separate disorders by examining the …
