Comparison Of Accuracy Captured By Different Controlled Languages In Oral Pathology Diagnoses, Jung-Wei Chen, Catherine Flaitz, Todd Johnson Jan 2005

Comparison Of Accuracy Captured By Different Controlled Languages In Oral Pathology Diagnoses, Jung-Wei Chen, Catherine Flaitz, Todd Johnson

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

This project was comparing the accuracy of capturing the oral pathology diagnoses among different coding systems. 55 diagnoses were selected for comparison among 5 coding systems. The results of accuracy in capturing oral diagnoses are: AFIP (96.4%), followed by Read 99 (85.5%), SNOMED 98 (74.5%), ICD-9 (43.6%), and CDT-3 (14.5%). It shows that the currently used coding systems, ICD-9 and CDT-3, were inadequate, whereas the AFIP coding system captured the majority of oral diagnoses. In conclusion, the most commonly used medical and dental coding systems lack terms for the diagnosis of oral and dental conditions.

Electric-Field Generated By The Combustion Of Titanium In Nitrogen, Karen S. Martirosyan, Mona Setoodeh, Dan Luss Jan 2005

Electric-Field Generated By The Combustion Of Titanium In Nitrogen, Karen S. Martirosyan, Mona Setoodeh, Dan Luss

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

A short temporal electrical impulse (duration of 30–150ms) was generated during the nitridation of mixtures of titanium and titanium nitride by a high temperature moving reaction front. The maximum voltage and current were generated in the combustion front region, in which the conversion of Ti to TiN was incomplete. The electric field (voltage up to 2V and current up to 60mA) decayed and vanished before the maximum combustion temperature was attained. The generation of an electric field during a rapid high-temperature nitridation is most probably due to the different diffusion velocities of charge carriers through the growing titanium nitride shell …

The Drafting Process For A Hague Convention On Jurisdiction And Judgements With Special Consideration Of Intellectual Property And E-Commerce, Knut Woestehoff Jan 2005

The Drafting Process For A Hague Convention On Jurisdiction And Judgements With Special Consideration Of Intellectual Property And E-Commerce, Knut Woestehoff

LLM Theses and Essays

This thesis is a study of the drafting process for the Hague Convention on Jurisdiction and Judgements. It will be demonstrated why the original goal of a broad treaty was given up in favor of a draft convention that only applies in international cases to exclusive choice of court agreements concluded in civil and commercial matters in the business-to-business setting. The reader will get an understanding of how the participating nations and interest groups influenced the negotiations and modified the outcome of the discussions. Special consideration was given to the matters of intellectual property and e-commerce, which were nearly completely …

Systems Development Tools And The Relationship To Project Design: Cost And Budget Implications, Gerald V. Post, Albert Kagan Jan 2005

Systems Development Tools And The Relationship To Project Design: Cost And Budget Implications, Gerald V. Post, Albert Kagan

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

An investigation into current system development trends, including a summary of projects, platforms, and tools. The majority of projects get completed on time and within budget, but 14 percent still present problems. The choice of tools appears to be changing to represent the demand for new projects on new platforms—particularly the Internet. CASE tools are used sparingly, and Java is beginning to replace C++ in many projects. Database management systems are critical to almost all projects.

Best Practices And Web Practices: Comparing Corporate Supplier Diversity Programs With Web-Based Minority Supplier Content, Dale Young Jan 2005

Best Practices And Web Practices: Comparing Corporate Supplier Diversity Programs With Web-Based Minority Supplier Content, Dale Young

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

The growing use of the Web for business-to-business transactions means corporate Web sites could be used to communicate with diverse suppliers. This study compares the Web-based supplier diversity content on Fortune 500 public sites with the content of off-line minority supplier programs. Web sites are underused for communicating with diverse suppliers, as the content appears on only 12.5% of the sites. They emphasize information publishing because the most common Web-based supplier diversity items are contact information, such as a title and name, and third-party certification. Web-based supplier diversity content, however, is very similar to off-line diversity program content.

Impacts Of B2c E-Commerce On Hospital Productivity: An Empirical Study, Shin-Yuan Hung, Hsin-Min Hung, Mu-Yi Huang

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

This work conducted a comprehensive study of Business-to-Consumer Electronic Commerce (B2C e-Commerce) applications in Taiwanese hospitals. To further assess the impacts of B2C e-Commerce on hospital productivity, this study also employed three quantitative methods to analyze historical data. The results confirm those of broader research into applications of B2C e-Commerce to hospitals. Additionally, the results of the quantitative analysis demonstrate that B2C e-Commerce significantly impacts the hospital productivity.

Features Of Born-Global Processing Plants Under The Global Economy, Helen G. Zhao, Vistor H.Y. Lo, Domenic Sculli Jan 2005

Features Of Born-Global Processing Plants Under The Global Economy, Helen G. Zhao, Vistor H.Y. Lo, Domenic Sculli

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

A Born-Global Processing Plant (BGPP) is the formation of a new manufacturing plant specifically for the world-wide outsourcing industry and is a unique product of the global economy. The concept of a Born-Global entity has been mainly associated with high-tech industries and high-tech products. In this paper we extend the term BGPP to cover the concept of Born-Global to mature/low-tech and labor intensive processing plants that produce many of the traditional manufactured products. Such processing plants form the backbone of Southern China’s economic development. The conventional view regards a BGPP as playing a minor role in a traditional multinational enterprise …

A Theory Of Copyright's Derivative Right And Related Doctrines, Michael B. Abramowicz Jan 2005

A Theory Of Copyright's Derivative Right And Related Doctrines, Michael B. Abramowicz

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Borrowing from the rent dissipation literature that has proven useful in patent analysis, in this Article I provide an economic foundation for copyright’s derivative right to prepare sequels and adaptations and suggest a straightforward doctrinal test for that right. I argue that the suppression of competition in creating adaptations of the same copyrighted expression, rather than being a loss, might instead be the derivative right’s chief economic virtue, giving an author control over adaptations and limiting the production of those that would be close substitutes for one another. In Part I, I explain and question the conventional justification of the …

Some Reflections On The Diversity Of Corporate Boards: Women, People Of Color, And The Unique Issues Associated With Women Of Color, Lisa M. Fairfax Jan 2005

Some Reflections On The Diversity Of Corporate Boards: Women, People Of Color, And The Unique Issues Associated With Women Of Color, Lisa M. Fairfax

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

As one might expect, there are many similarities between the circumstances of women directors and directors of color, which includes African Americans, Latinos, and Asian Americans. Indeed, both groups began appearing on corporate boards in significant numbers during the same period - right after the Civil Rights Movement pursuant to which the push for racial equality throughout society precipitated efforts to achieve greater representation of people of color as well as women on corporate boards. Moreover, while women and people of color have experienced some increase in board representation over the last few decades, both groups also have encountered significant …

Spare The Rod, Spoil The Director? Revitalizing Directors' Fiduciary Duty Through Legal Liability, Lisa M. Fairfax Jan 2005

Spare The Rod, Spoil The Director? Revitalizing Directors' Fiduciary Duty Through Legal Liability, Lisa M. Fairfax

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

It appears that our society has tacitly agreed to spare corporate directors any significant legal liability - which includes both financial and incarceration - for failing to perform their duties as board members. Thus, over the last twenty years, there has been a virtual elimination of legal liability - particularly in the form of financial penalties - for directors who breach their fiduciary duty of care. This is true despite the fact that we entrust directors with the awesome responsibility of monitoring all of America's corporations as well as the officers and agents within those corporations. More surprisingly, this tacit …

Sarbanes-Oxley, Corporate Federalism, And The Declining Significance Of Federal Reforms On State Director Independence Standards, Lisa M. Fairfax Jan 2005

Sarbanes-Oxley, Corporate Federalism, And The Declining Significance Of Federal Reforms On State Director Independence Standards, Lisa M. Fairfax

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Commentators have argued that the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 ("Sarbanes-Oxley" or the "Act") raises federalism concerns because it regulates the internal affairs of a corporation, including the composition of, and qualifications for, corporate boards, in a manner traditionally reserved to states. This Article responds to those claims, arguing that the Act reflects a relatively minimal intrusion into state law, particularly with regard to issues of director independence. This Article further argues that the Act's failure to disturb state law on these issues may impede its ability to tighten director independence standards and by extension may undermine its ability to improve …

The Current Generation Of Constitutional Law, David Fontana Jan 2005

The Current Generation Of Constitutional Law, David Fontana

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In this piece reviewing Mark Tushnet's "The New Constitutional Order," David Fontana argues that Tushnet's admirably comprehensive book faces some of the same problems that many other pieces of popular constitutionalism scholarship do: He discusses the Constitution outside of the courts without examining the actual behavior of the Constitution outside of the courts. As it turns out, Tushnet is mostly right that there has not been a major constitutional revolution in the past generation. Still, by understudying the behavior of institutions besides courts, the book does not focus enough on the extent to which the entire political dynamic has moved …
