Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Atrophy of the left or right side of the hippocampus has been related to cognitive deficits and psychiatric disease. In this study, we examined the correlation between the hippocampal volume laterality index and the relative lengths of the second (index finger) and fourth (ring finger) digits (2D:4D) in healthy female subjects. The 2D:4D ratio is fixed in utero, and the ratio is higher in women than in men. There is evidence that this ratio is an indicator of the intrauterine concentration of testosterone, which influences the development of different regions of the brain. Assessing the volume of different parts of …

The First-Optical-Vla Survey For Lensed Radio Lobes, Deborah B. Haarsma, Joshua N. Winn, Emilio E. Falco, Christopher S. Kochanek Nov 2005

The First-Optical-Vla Survey For Lensed Radio Lobes, Deborah B. Haarsma, Joshua N. Winn, Emilio E. Falco, Christopher S. Kochanek

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

We present results from a survey for gravitationally lensed radio lobes. Lensed lobes are a potentially richer source of information about galaxy mass distributions than lensed point sources, which have been the exclusive focus of other recent surveys. Our approach is to identify radio lobes in the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty cm (FIRST) catalog and then search optical catalogs for coincident foreground galaxies, which are candidate lensing galaxies. We then obtain higher resolution images of these targets at both optical and radio wavelengths and obtain optical spectra for the most promising candidates. We present maps of …

Key To Common Indoor Spiders Found In Utah, Alan H. Roe

All Current Publications

This key is intended as an identification aid for spider specimens commonly collected from indoor situations in Utah. It is not all-inclusive and will not correctly identify all spiders. However, the key does include groups that comprise about 90% of the specimens that are submitted from household situations in Utah, and about 80% of spiders submitted from all situations.

Breeding Soundness Evaluation Of Bulls, Clell V. Bagley, C. Kim Chapman Nov 2005

Breeding Soundness Evaluation Of Bulls, Clell V. Bagley, C. Kim Chapman

All Current Publications

Very few bulls are “sterile” and unable to produce any offspring. But, 10% to 25% of bulls have reduced fertility or possess physical problems which reduce their ability to sire calves. The breeding soundness evaluation (BSE) is a useful tool in identifying these bulls. Eliminating bulls with physical problems or reduced fertility from the breeding herd will improve overall reproductive efficiency of the herd.

Barnacles, Old Age Marks, Or Just Plain Seborrheic Keratoses., Lawrence Charles Parish, Joseph A. Witkowski Nov 2005

Barnacles, Old Age Marks, Or Just Plain Seborrheic Keratoses., Lawrence Charles Parish, Joseph A. Witkowski

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

Growing older may mean more wrinkles and creaking joints, but why does it also entail an accumulation of barnacles. These brown, somewhat friable, often warty lesions are more common on senior citizens but are not necessarily limited to the chronologically challenged. Seborrheic keratoses (SKs) can be easily recognized (fig 1), but the itching and the occasional scratch-induced dermatitis make them more than a cosmetic nuisance. (fig 2)

SKs can go by a variety of names, ranging from basal cell papillomas, senile warts, and senile keratoses to seborrheic verrucae and verrucous senilis. The various terms provide no more information on their …

Designing And Operating Safe And Secure Transit Systems: Assessing Current Practices In The United States And Abroad, Mti Report 04-05, Brian D. Taylor, Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris, Robin Liggett, Camille Fink, Martin Wachs, Ellen Cavanagh, Christopher Cherry, Peter J. Haas

Mineta Transportation Institute

Public transit systems around the world have for decades served as a principal venue for terrorist acts. Today, transit security is widely viewed as an important public policy issue and is a high priority at most large transit systems and at smaller systems operating in large metropolitan areas. Research on transit security in the United States has mushroomed since 9/11; this study is part of that new wave of research. This study contributes to our understanding of transit security by (1) reviewing and synthesizing nearly all previously published research on transit terrorism; (2) conducting detailed case studies of transit systems …

Selective Screening Of Rail Passengers, Mti 06-07, Brian M. Jenkins, Bruce Robert Butterworth Nov 2005

Selective Screening Of Rail Passengers, Mti 06-07, Brian M. Jenkins, Bruce Robert Butterworth

Mineta Transportation Institute

The threat of another major terrorist attack in the United States remains high, with the greatest danger coming from local extremists inspired by events in the Middle East. Although the United States removed the Taliban government and destroyed al Qaeda’s training camps in Afghanistan, events in Europe and elsewhere have shown that the terrorist network leadership remains determined to carry out further attacks and is capable of doing so. Therefore, the United States must systematically conduct research on terrorist strikes against transportation targets to distill lessons learned and determine the best practices for deterrence, response, and recovery. Those best practices …

Racial Integration And Community Revitalization: Applying The Fair Housing Act To The Low Income Housing Tax Credit, Myron Orfield Nov 2005

Racial Integration And Community Revitalization: Applying The Fair Housing Act To The Low Income Housing Tax Credit, Myron Orfield

Vanderbilt Law Review

A growing national debate about the future of race, housing, and urban policy in the United States is reflected in the recent controversy over the administration of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit ("LIHTC") program, the largest federal program that supports building low-income housing. Administered by the Treasury Department, the program allows investors in residential rental property to claim tax credits for the development or rehabilitation of property to be rented to low-income tenants. The program is implemented mainly through state agencies which distribute the credit to developers on a competitive basis. Part of the LIHTC statute, which passed without debate …

The Untold Story Of The Rest Of The Americans With Disabilities Act, Michael Waterstone Nov 2005

The Untold Story Of The Rest Of The Americans With Disabilities Act, Michael Waterstone

Vanderbilt Law Review

The Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA")' can be described as the All-Star team of civil rights legislation. The framers of the ADA sought to create sweeping change in nearly every facet of the lives of people with disabilities. To achieve these ambitious goals, the framers assembled the best and brightest parts of other civil rights legislation: pieces of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Section 04 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Fair Housing Act. The end result was a comprehensive statute with three major parts: …

"Gouging The Government": Why A Federal Contingency Fee Lobbying Prohibition Is Consistent With First Amendment Freedoms, Meredith A. Capps Nov 2005

"Gouging The Government": Why A Federal Contingency Fee Lobbying Prohibition Is Consistent With First Amendment Freedoms, Meredith A. Capps

Vanderbilt Law Review

Washington Post writer David Segal once observed, "[f]or most Americans the words 'Washington lobbyist' have roughly the same cachet as, say, 'deadbeat dad."" Both lawmakers and the public regard lobbying as an unsavory part of the political process. Much of this perception stems from the vast sums of money spent each year on lobbying activity. For example, in the first half of 2004 alone, mortgage funding companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac reported spending over $11 million on lobbying activities, General Electric spent $8.5 million, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce spent $20.1 million-and these were only three of the …

Rethinking Place Of Business As Choice Of Law In Class Action Lawsuits, Allison M. Gruenwald Nov 2005

Rethinking Place Of Business As Choice Of Law In Class Action Lawsuits, Allison M. Gruenwald

Vanderbilt Law Review

In the past century, businesses have come to operate on a national and often global level. In the past century, the United States has seen an enormous nationalization and even globalization of business. As a result, the actions of a single company increasingly have the potential to affect people far beyond the boundaries of that company's home state. When one or a few companies injure large numbers of consumers across the country, aggregate litigation (namely the class action lawsuit) becomes an especially attractive remedy. Aggregating claims allows plaintiffs to save time and money and may also enable them to present …

The Strategic Use Of Mexico To Restrict South American Access To The Diversity Visa Lottery, Jonathan H. Wardle Nov 2005

The Strategic Use Of Mexico To Restrict South American Access To The Diversity Visa Lottery, Jonathan H. Wardle

Vanderbilt Law Review

In 1990, Congress enacted the Family Unity and Employment Opportunity Act (the "1990 Act"), which created a visa lottery to enhance the diversity of the immigrant stream and to ensure that areas of the world sending relatively few immigrants to the United States could still have access to the immigrant stream. In order to achieve these goals, Congress created a complex formula by which 55,000 "diversity" visas would be distributed annually among six geographically defined regions based on the total number of immigrant admissions from each region. Under this formula, regions with relatively low admission rates are granted more visas …

A Compliant Contact-Aided Revolute Joint, Jessie R. Cannon, Larry L. Howell Nov 2005

A Compliant Contact-Aided Revolute Joint, Jessie R. Cannon, Larry L. Howell

Faculty Publications

This paper presents the compliant contact-aided revolute (CCAR) joint, a planar mechanism capable of performing the functions of a bearing and a spring. The pseudo-rigid-body model is used to predict the behavior of the CCAR joint, and this model is validated through the use of finite element analysis and prototype testing. The CCAR joint is shown to have high maximum rotation and lateral stiffness. A case study is presented, and manufacturing considerations are discussed for the macro, meso, and micro scales.

The Text Of The Fourth Gospel In Greek Lectionary L1172, Timothy Neal Tutor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This investigation into the Johannine pericopes in Greek lectionary /11 72 seeks to discover the textual character of twenty-four pericopes, with reference to five text-types, and to provide answers to three questions: (1) Do any of the Johannine pericopes in l1172 show affinity with an identifiable Caesarean text-type? (2) Is there a connecting link between the Caesarean and Byzantine text-types? (3) What part does the lectionary play in this connection?

Social Utility Functions-Part Ii: Applications, Wynn C. Stirling, Richard L. Frost Nov 2005

Social Utility Functions-Part Ii: Applications, Wynn C. Stirling, Richard L. Frost

Faculty Publications

Social utilities account for agent preferences and, thus, can characterize complex interrelationships, such as cooperation, compromise, negotiation, and altruism, that can exist between agents. Satisficing game theory, which is based on social utilities, offers a framework within which to design sophisticated multiagent systems. Key features of this approach are: a) an N-agent system may be represented by a 2N-dimensional Bayesian network, called a praxeic network; b) the theory accommodates a notion of situational altruism (a willingness to defer to others in a controlled way if so doing would actually benefit others under the condition that others wish to take advantage …

A Context-Sensitive Structural Heuristic For Guided Search Model Checking, Eric G. Mercer, Neha Rungta Nov 2005

A Context-Sensitive Structural Heuristic For Guided Search Model Checking, Eric G. Mercer, Neha Rungta

Faculty Publications

Software verification using model checking often translates programs into corresponding transition systems that model the program behavior. As software systems continue to grow in complexity and size, exhaustively checking a property on a transition graph becomes difficult. The goal of guided search heuristics in model checking is to find a counterexample to the property being verified as quickly as possible in the transition graph. The FSM distance heuristic builds an interprocedural control flow graph of the program to estimate distance to a possible error state. It ignores calling context and underestimates the true distance to the error.

A Threshold-Based Algorithm For Continuous Monitoring Of K Nearest Neighbors, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Dimitris Papadias, Spiridon Bakiras, Yufei Tao Nov 2005

A Threshold-Based Algorithm For Continuous Monitoring Of K Nearest Neighbors, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Dimitris Papadias, Spiridon Bakiras, Yufei Tao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Assume a set of moving objects and a central server that monitors their positions over time, while processing continuous nearest neighbor queries from geographically distributed clients. In order to always report up-to-date results, the server could constantly obtain the most recent position of all objects. However, this naïve solution requires the transmission of a large number of rapid data streams corresponding to location updates. Intuitively, current information is necessary only for objects that may influence some query result (i.e., they may be included in the nearest neighbor set of some client). Motivated by this observation, we present a threshold-based algorithm …

Query Processing In Spatial Databases Containing Obstacles, Jun Zhang, Dimitris Papadias, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Manli Zhu Nov 2005

Query Processing In Spatial Databases Containing Obstacles, Jun Zhang, Dimitris Papadias, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Manli Zhu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Despite the existence of obstacles in many database applications, traditional spatial query processing assumes that points in space are directly reachable and utilizes the Euclidean distance metric. In this paper, we study spatial queries in the presence of obstacles, where the obstructed distance between two points is defined as the length of the shortest path that connects them without crossing any obstacles. We propose efficient algorithms for the most important query types, namely, range search, nearest neighbours, e-distance joins, closest pairs and distance semi-joins, assuming that both data objects and obstacles are indexed by R-trees. The effectiveness of the proposed …

Bloggers Beware: The Five Commandments For Bloggers, Warren B. Chik Nov 2005

Bloggers Beware: The Five Commandments For Bloggers, Warren B. Chik

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

There is a need for Singapore bloggers to be aware of legal issues arising from their online diaries, particularly in the light of the recent cases involving seditious remarks made online by bloggers that resulted in jail terms and fines; and earlier in the year, a dispute arose over allegedly defamatory speeches made by a blogger about A*STAR’s Chairman, Philip Yeo, which was resolved amicably, but not without an apology. The threats of legal repercussions in the form of civil lawsuits and criminal charges serve as reminders of the potential legal problems that can arise from blogging, and indeed from …

A Spatial Analysis Of The Xiii Italian Legislature, Massimiliano Landi, Riccardo Pelizzo Nov 2005

A Spatial Analysis Of The Xiii Italian Legislature, Massimiliano Landi, Riccardo Pelizzo

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

We present a spatial map of the Italian House of Deputies during the XIII Legislature obtained by applying the Poole and Rosenthal methodology to roll call data. We estimate coordinates for almost all the 650 Deputies that were on the House’s floor at the time, and we aggregate them according to parties. We find that voting patters generate basically a two dimensional political space. The first dimension represents loyalty to either the ruling coalition or the opposing one. The second dimension is represented by the European Union. These findings are consistent with the exceptional case of the party Northern League, …

Effect Of Chronic Hyperoxic Exposure On Duroquinone Reduction In Adult Rat Lungs, Said H. Audi, Robert D. Bongard, Gary S. Krenz, David A. Rickaby, Steven Thomas Haworth, Jessica Eisenhauer, David L. Roerig, Marilyn P. Merker Nov 2005

Effect Of Chronic Hyperoxic Exposure On Duroquinone Reduction In Adult Rat Lungs, Said H. Audi, Robert D. Bongard, Gary S. Krenz, David A. Rickaby, Steven Thomas Haworth, Jessica Eisenhauer, David L. Roerig, Marilyn P. Merker

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) plays a dominant role in the reduction of the quinone compound 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-benzoquinone (duroquinone, DQ) to durohydroquinone (DQH2) on passage through the rat lung. Exposure of adult rats to 85% O2 for ≥7 days stimulates adaptation to the otherwise lethal effects of >95% O2. The objective of this study was to examine whether exposure of adult rats to hyperoxia affected lung NQO1 activity as measured by the rate of DQ reduction on passage through the lung. We measured DQH2 appearance in the venous effluent during DQ infusion at different concentrations into …

A Three-Dimensional Reconstruction Algorithm For An Inverse-Geometry Volumetric Ct System, Taly Gilat Schmidt, Rebecca Fahrig, Norbert J. Pelc Nov 2005

A Three-Dimensional Reconstruction Algorithm For An Inverse-Geometry Volumetric Ct System, Taly Gilat Schmidt, Rebecca Fahrig, Norbert J. Pelc

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

An inverse-geometry volumetric computed tomography (IGCT) system has been proposed capable of rapidly acquiring sufficient data to reconstruct a thick volume in one circular scan. The system uses a large-area scanned source opposite a smaller detector. The source and detector have the same extent in the axial, or slice, direction, thus providing sufficient volumetric sampling and avoiding cone-beam artifacts. This paper describes a reconstruction algorithm for the IGCT system. The algorithm first rebins the acquired data into two-dimensional (2D) parallel-ray projections at multiple tilt and azimuthal angles, followed by a 3D filtered backprojection. The rebinning step is performed by gridding …
