The Varieties Of Quasigroups Of Bol-Moufang Type: An Equational Reasoning Approach, J.D. Phillips Jan 2005

The Varieties Of Quasigroups Of Bol-Moufang Type: An Equational Reasoning Approach, J.D. Phillips

Journal Articles

A quasigroup identity is of Bol-Moufang type if two of its three variables occur once on each side, the third variable occurs twice on each side, the order in which the variables appear on both sides is the same, and the only binary operation used is the multiplication, viz. ((xy)x)z = x(y(xz)). Many well-known varieties of quasigroups are of Bol-Moufang type. We show that there are exactly 26 such varieties, determine all inclusions between them, and provide all necessary counterexamples. We also determine which of these varieties consist of loops or one-sided loops, and fully describe the varieties of commutative …

The Varieties Of Loops Of Bol-Moufang Type, J.D. Phillips

Journal Articles

A loop identity is of Bol-Moufang type if two of its three variables occur once on each side, the third variable occurs twice on each side, and the order in which the variables appear on both sides is the same, viz. ((xy)x)z = x(y(xz)). Loop varieties defined by one identity of Bol-Moufang type include groups, Bol loops, Moufang loops and C-loops. We show that there are exactly 14 such varieties, and determine all inclusions between them, providing all necessary counterexamples, too. This extends and completes the programme of Fenyves [5].

A Short Basis For The Variety Of Digroups, J.D. Phillips Jan 2005

A Short Basis For The Variety Of Digroups, J.D. Phillips

Journal Articles

A digroup is an algebra defined on a set with two associative binary operations. Digroups play a prominent role in an important open problem from the theory of Leibniz algebras. We give a simple basis of independent axioms for the variety of digroups that emphasizes the two core semigroup structures undergirding each algebra in this variety.

Argulus Yucatanus N. Sp. (Crustacea: Branchiura) Parasitic On Cichlasoma Urophthalmus From Yucatan, Mexico, William J. Poly

Gulf and Caribbean Research

A new species, Argulus yucatanus, is described based on 14 specimens from Cichlasoma urophthalmus collected in Celestun Lagoon, Yucatan, Mexico. Diagnostic characters include the number of and shape of sclerites in the suction cup support rods, shape of and position of respiratory areas, and modifications on the legs of males. In males, the coxae of the 2nd legs bear an angular lobe with 5–7 erect scales and 13–21 sensilla. The new species is compared to Argulus funduli Krøyer, 1863, A. chromidis Krøyer, 1863, A. cubensis Wilson, 1936, A. rhamdiae Wilson, 1936, and A. varians Bere, 1936.

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Reports of West Indian manatees (Trichechus manatus) in the US Gulf of Mexico west of Florida have increased during the last decade. We reviewed all available manatee sighting, capture, and carcass records (n = 377) from Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas since the early 1900s; only 40 of these were previously published. Manatees were reported most often in estuarine habitats, usually either near a freshwater source or natural or industrial warm-water springs/runoffs during winter months. The recent increase in manatee records may be due to a combination of increased public awareness and dispersal of manatees, most likely seasonal …

Selected Life-History Observations On The Cayman Gambusia, Gambusia Xanthosoma Greenfield, 1983 (Poeciliidae), Michael A. Abney, Richard W. Heard, Chet F. Rakocinski

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The Cayman gambusia (Gambusia xanthosoma Greenfield, 1983) is an uncommon species within the G. punctata species group, endemic to North Sound, Grand Cayman Island, BWI. Since the original description (Greenfield 1983) only phylogenetic information has been published and little is known of its habitat, feeding ecology, or reproductive life history (Wildrick and Greenfield 1985, Rauchenberger 1988). Originally described from a brackish-water (30 psu) mosquito control ditch, the species also occurred throughout marine mangrove habitat and inland saline ponds adjacent to North Sound, Grand Cayman Island. Here we present information on the habitat, diet, reproduction, life history, and parasites of …

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The Mayan cichlid, Cichlasoma urophthalmus, has a wide distribution in southeastern Mexico where it inhabits rivers and coastal lagoons. In the Alvarado lagoonal system, Veracruz, it is distributed towards the north in Camaronera Lagoon. The Mayan cichlid shows an affinity for oligohaline to mesohaline sites with submerged vegetation, well-oxygenated, deep, and transparent water. The major abundance and biomass of this species was obtained during December to February. The diet of Mayan cichlids consists principally of plant detrital material and algae. Length-frequency distribution shows 2 size classes during both the dry and rainy seasons, corresponding to reproductive fish and young …

Long-Term Fish Assemblage Dynamics Of The Alvarado Lagoon Estuary, Veracruz, Mexico, Rafael Chavez-Lopez, Jonathan Franco-Lopez, Angel Moran-Silva, Martin T. O'Connell

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The fish assemblages of Alvarado Lagoon Estuary (a complex of coastal lagoons in the state of Veracruz, Mexico) have been surveyed intermittently by different researchers over the last 40 years. Assessing longterm trends in fish assemblage composition for this ecosystem is problematic due to differences in sampling efforts among the survey periods (1966–1968, 1987–1988, 1989, 1989–1990, 1990–1991 and 2000–2001) and by the inherent ecological variability of estuaries. To overcome these data limitations and better understand fish assemblage change over time, we used robust, simulation-based analyses to compare collections from the different surveys. The 107 fish species collected from the Alvarado …

On Rough Singular Integrals Along Surfaces On Product Domains, Ahmad Al-Salman, Ali A. Al-Jarrah Jan 2005

On Rough Singular Integrals Along Surfaces On Product Domains, Ahmad Al-Salman, Ali A. Al-Jarrah

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we study a class of singular integrals along surfaces on product domains with kernels in L(log L)^2(S^{n-1} \times S^{m-1}). We formulate a general theorem concerning the L^p boundedness of these operators. As a consequence of this theorem we establish L^p estimates of several classes of operators whose L^p boundedness in the one parameter setting is known. The condition L(log L)^2(B^{n-1} \times S^{m-1}) is known to be an optimal size condition

Interviewing The Client, Michael D. Akers, Robert Yahr

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

This paper examines an assignment where students taking either an introductory auditing students or an accounting communications course interview a client to gain an understanding of internal control and the interview process. Students document the results of the interview in a memorandum. The paper provides detailed information regarding the design and implementation of a portion of the internal control system. The three main objectives of the assignment are 1) to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate, develop, and enhance their communication skills; 2) to convey a realistic picture of the accounting environment; and 3) to familiarize students with a …

Religious Affiliation And Individual International-Policy Preferences In The United States, Joseph P. Daniels Jan 2005

Religious Affiliation And Individual International-Policy Preferences In The United States, Joseph P. Daniels

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

Empirical examination of individual-level survey data on national identity, in general, reveals a significant relationship between religious affiliation and an individual’s international-policy preferences and that this relationship varies across Protestant denominations. Specifically, we test attitudes toward import and immigration policies, the role of international institutions, and unilateral policy actions. The empirical results indicate that individuals affiliated with conservative Protestant denominations are more likely to support positions on international issues that can be regarded as consistent with the anti-globalist right. We also find evidence of a reinforcing regional effect among conservatives in the south, and differences in the preferences of Baptist …
