Articulation: Challenges And Solutions, Martha G. Abbott Jan 2005

Articulation: Challenges And Solutions, Martha G. Abbott

Russian Language Journal

Providing students with a seamless progression of language development within the K-12 school curriculum remains a challenge for the foreign-language profession as we enter the new century. As national standards are developed for foreign-language education in the K-12 continuum and school districts throughout the country consider implementing foreign-language programs earlier in the curriculum, we have an opportunity to confront that challenge with renewed vigor.

The State Of The Art In Language Assessment: Notes For The Third Millennium, Bernard Spolsky Jan 2005

The State Of The Art In Language Assessment: Notes For The Third Millennium, Bernard Spolsky

Russian Language Journal

In the 2000 years during which human abilities have been assessed formally, tests and examinations have grown more powerful. A century ago, critics launched a strong attack on examinations, citing their “inevitable uncertainty,” but a growing testing industry and governmental cries for “accountability” have managed a stubborn defense. More recently, appreciation of the complexity of notions such as “language proficiency” and acceptance of the resulting impossibility of finding a single measure of those notions have led testing experts to a realization that assessing language knowledge is multipart and intricate—and more likely to be served by profiles than by simple scores.

Language Use And The Oral Tradition In Aaya (African American Young Adult) Literature, Kaavonia Hinton-Johnson Jan 2005

Language Use And The Oral Tradition In Aaya (African American Young Adult) Literature, Kaavonia Hinton-Johnson

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

(First paragraph) In elementary school my favorite teachers taught me that the language used in my home was incorrect, incoherent, and inappropriate. My second grade teacher Ms. Hull, a tall, thin, dark-skinned woman, stands out among the others. I can still see her hovering over us. “Was!” Ms. Hull shouted, “not wuz. Your tongue is lazy.” “You be what?” she’d ask in disgust with one hand on her hip. When this happened, I was sure to get yelled at and lectured. To avoid such humiliation, I quickly learned to, as we said in my neighborhood, “talk proper.” Shame nagged at …

Using Space To Describe Space: American Sign Language And The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, Cindee Calton Jan 2005

Using Space To Describe Space: American Sign Language And The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, Cindee Calton

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

My study sought to combine two topics that have recently generated much interest among anthropologists. One of these topics is American Sign Language, the other is linguistic relativity. Although both topics have been a part of the literature for some time, neither has been studied extensively until the recent past. Both present exciting new horizons for understanding culture, particularly language and culture.

The first of these two topics is the study of American Sign Language. The reason for its previous absence from the literature has to do with unfortunate prejudice which, for a long time, kept ASL from being recognized …

A Genetic Algorithm For Simplifying The Amino Acid Alphabet And Predicting Protein Interactions., Matthew Palensky Jan 2005

A Genetic Algorithm For Simplifying The Amino Acid Alphabet And Predicting Protein Interactions., Matthew Palensky

Student Work

A central problem in creating simplified amino acid alphabets is narrowing down the massive number of possible simplifications. Since considering all possible simplifications is intractable, effectively creating simplified alphabets is essential. Genetic algorithms have been effective in providing near-optimal solutions for similar combinatorial problems with large solution spaces. This makes them a good candidate for creating simplified alphabets. Simplified amino acid alphabets could uncover hidden relationships in protein sequences, and in turn provide a valuable first step in solving protein-related microbiological problems. The project demonstrates the impact of reducing the alphabet in addressing an important open problem in microbiology, which …

Masochism: A Queer Subjectivity?, Amber Musser Jan 2005

Masochism: A Queer Subjectivity?, Amber Musser

Publications and Research

Judith Butler's Gender Trouble elaborates what may be called a queer subjectivity. Characterized by non-essential, performative identity, her theory has been criticized because, according to its critics, it does not give the subject political agency. Liberal theorists, such as Seyla Benhabib, have been particularly concerned with the political effects of this form of subjectivity on already marginalized social groups while other theorists, such as Susan Stryker and Ed Cohen, have articulated concern that the theory does not sufficiently account for embodiment, affect, and identity. This essay brings Deleuze's theory of masochism in dialogue with Butler's theories of subjectivity in an …

Identification Des Facteurs Favorisant La Pénétration De L'Eau Et Le Transfert D'Humidité Dans L'Enveloppe Du Bâtiment, Louis Lazure, Jacques Lavoie

Fiches

Influence Of Nationality On The Interpretation Of Ireland's Tourism Destination Imagery, Catriona Murphy-Underhill Jan 2005

Influence Of Nationality On The Interpretation Of Ireland's Tourism Destination Imagery, Catriona Murphy-Underhill

Plymouth Business School Theses

This thesis investigates the influence of nationality on the interpretations of the tourism destination imagery of Ireland, drawing in particular on the views of tourists travelling from Britain. It involved an assessment of the influence (if any) of the nationality of the tourist and the nationality of the place on pre- and post-visit interpretations of Ireland's perceived and projected images, as well as an evaluation of the implications of such influences on Ireland's image as a tourist destination. By means of empirical research applied to the same sample of tourists travelling from Britain to Ireland via Shannon airport, the factors …

Where possible, links are provided to sources …

Towards A Continuum Of Scholarship: The Eventual Collapse Of The Distinction Between Grey And Non-Grey Literature, Marcus A. Banks Jan 2005

Towards A Continuum Of Scholarship: The Eventual Collapse Of The Distinction Between Grey And Non-Grey Literature, Marcus A. Banks

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Abstract (from University of Arizona Campus Repository)

This paper argues that the distinction between grey and non-grey (or white) literature will become less relevant over time, as online discovery options proliferate. In the meantime, the political success of the open access publishing movement has valuable lessons for proponents of increasing access to grey literature.

Spotted Sea Trout (Cynoscion Nebulosus) And Pinfish (Lagodon Rhomboides) Dietary Analysis According To Habitat Type, Micah Russell Jan 2005

Spotted Sea Trout (Cynoscion Nebulosus) And Pinfish (Lagodon Rhomboides) Dietary Analysis According To Habitat Type, Micah Russell

LSU Master's Theses

The diets of a transitory fish (spotted sea trout, Cynoscion nebulosus) and a fish with presumed greater site-fidelity (pinfish, Lagodon rhomboides) were analyzed with respect to habitat. Sampling occurred in Barataria Bay, Louisiana between May 2003 and May 2004. Spotted sea trout were caught using gillnets, and pinfish were caught using baited fish traps. Each gear was used on three habitats: mud bottom, oyster shell, and marsh edge. In addition, sampling for spotted sea trout was repeated at three locations along a salinity gradient. A total of 175 spotted sea trout stomachs and 137 pinfish stomachs were examined. Seventeen prey …

A Semantic Web Data Retrieval Implementation With An Adaptive Model For Supporting Agent Decision Structures, James V. Hansen, James B. Mcdonald, Conan C. Albrecht, Douglas L. Dean, Bonnie B. Anderson

Faculty Publications

This paper proposes an adaptive learning approach that yields decision models that can be applied by a transactions agent. This model can learn effectively with a variety of data distributions. This research used the Semantic Web as a data access approach. The Semantic Web is a method that sellers can use to publish semantically meaningful information on Websites so that automated applications can reliably access that information. We implemented a Semantic Web composed of 30 vendors’ Web pages and a spider to search those pages to obtain product and vendor information. This information was used to train a learning agent, …

Urban Yellow Fever Diffusion Patterns And The Role Of Micro-Environmental Factors In Disease Dissemination: A Temporal-Spatial Analysis Of The Memphis Epidemic Of 1878, William Brennan Arden Jan 2005

Urban Yellow Fever Diffusion Patterns And The Role Of Micro-Environmental Factors In Disease Dissemination: A Temporal-Spatial Analysis Of The Memphis Epidemic Of 1878, William Brennan Arden

LSU Master's Theses

Most investigations that examine diffusion of disease through urban areas give relatively scant attention to the 'micro-environment.' Employing the many methods of macro-environmental analysis, most studies do not attempt to identify street-level or even residence-level temporal-spatial patterns of disease diffusion. As a result, the mechanisms that lead to diffusion on such small scales are left relatively undefined. There is no doubt that cumulatively these small-scale mechanisms contribute to the diffusion of disease over the urban environment. However, the level of contribution and the specific details of their dynamics remain unclear. This thesis investigated some of these unexplored areas by presenting …

The Economics Of Neutrality: Switzerland And The United States In World War Ii, Matthew Schandler Jan 2005

The Economics Of Neutrality: Switzerland And The United States In World War Ii, Matthew Schandler

LSU Master's Theses

The following study addresses the contentious issue of Swiss economic policy during the Second World War. In particular, it concentrates on the deterioration of Swiss-American relations that resulted from Switzerland’s economic ties to Nazi Germany. It is argued that Switzerland’s survival as a neutral and democratic country depended less on the defense preparations of the Swiss Army and more on the difficult trade negotiations with both the Axis and Allies. Varied sources that include American and Swiss governmental reports, diplomatic documents, and contemporary accounts of the war, support the argument that although moral considerations played a secondary role to economic …

Weight Concern And Smoking In Children, Darla E. Kendzor Jan 2005

Weight Concern And Smoking In Children, Darla E. Kendzor

LSU Master's Theses

Studies have shown that weight concern is prevalent in children and that many children believe smoking can be used to control appetite and weight. However, little is known about the impact of the combination of these factors on smoking initiation in children. Initial research has indicated that weight concern predicts smoking initiation in adolescents, but these studies have not addressed the role of weight control outcome expectancies. The purpose of this study was to prospectively investigate the relationship between weight concern and smoking initiation, and to evaluate weight control outcome expectancies as a moderator of this relationship in children. Cross-sectional …

Apathy In Action: Baby Boomers' Attitudes Towards Product Placements In The Mass Media, Nicole M. Schmoll Jan 2005

Apathy In Action: Baby Boomers' Attitudes Towards Product Placements In The Mass Media, Nicole M. Schmoll

Student Work

Product placement, or the paid inclusion of branded products in to entertainment media, is a highly lucrative and popular practice. While much research has been done on the attitudes of college-aged individuals towards the practice of product placement, none had been conducted on any other populations’ attitudes towards product placements in media besides television and motion pictures. The current quantitatively-focused study employed a 23-question survey instrument to examine a baby boomer enumeration’s attitudes towards product placements in film, television, music videos, video games and internet web sites. Chi-square analysis, tests of correlation, ANOVA and simple means comparison were used to …

Distributed Airlift Systems Design With Application To Recirculating Soft Shell Crawfish Shedding Systems, Sripavani Gudipati Jan 2005

Distributed Airlift Systems Design With Application To Recirculating Soft Shell Crawfish Shedding Systems, Sripavani Gudipati

LSU Master's Theses

Soft shell crawfish, a seafood delicacy, has a potential market for growth in the aquaculture industry. Since the industry's collapse in the 1990's, the advent of new technologies like eyestalk ablation, automated hydraulic separation and distributed airlift systems has elevated the hope for restoration. In a distributed airlift system, airlifts and distribution pipes supply water to holding trays. Airlifts are simple devices used to pump water by injecting air at the bottom of an open pipe. The combination of airlifts and distribution pipes has potential economic benefits for low head applications in recirculating aquaculture systems. This thesis focuses on guidelines …

Maximizing Learning During Study Abroad: Some Research-Based Programmatic Suggestions, Dan Dewey Jan 2005

Maximizing Learning During Study Abroad: Some Research-Based Programmatic Suggestions, Dan Dewey

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to provide the reader with some useful suggestions for preparing Japanese language learners for study abroad, assisting them while abroad and facilitating the transition process upon and after return. Where possible, these suggestions will be based on research conducted in Japanese. While a clearer picture of the study abroad in Japan experience is beginning to emerge with recent and on-going research efforts, much more evidence regarding the nature of study abroad is available in other settings— in particular in European-language contexts. As I make suggestions in this paper based on work in other languages, …

Uplift and exposure of the Bannock detachment system and the synextensional basin fill deposits of the Salt Lake Formation provide a unique exposure of the three-dimensional geometries of a low-angle normal fault system and the stratal architecture of the overlying supradetachment basin. Within this system, structural and stratigraphic analyses, outcrop patterns, tephra geochronology, and geological cross sections document several important relationships: (1) the Bannock detachment system developed above the Sevierage Cache-Pocatello culmination and resembles the Sevier Desert detachment in its geometry, structural setting, and kinematic evolution; (2) the Bannock detachment system initiated and slipped at low angles; (3) flat-on-flat, ramp-flat, …
