The Effects Of Scripted Instruction On Proper Foot Plant During A -Skip In A Practice High School Track And Field Setting, Darian Anthony Parker

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Track and field is a sport that thrives on technique correction for skill acquisition (Mero, Komi and Gregor, 1992). Research in terms of approaches to improving skill acquisition and technique correction in novice high school track and field sprinters has been limited. Although recent efforts to improve skill acquisition in track and field have been effective (Hanin, Korjus, Jouste & Baxter, 2002 & Shestakov, Arakelian & Primakov, 2000), there does not appear to be any studies utilizing Gangstead and Beveridge's (1984) explicit instruction model as a way to improve skill acquisition for novice high school track and field sprinters. Explicit …

Lava flows range in composition from basalt to andesite, and include both alkaline and subalkaline rocks throughout the field. Trace element abundances for the youngest lavas show both oceanic island basalt (OIB) and mid-oceanic ridge basalt (MORB) components in their source. Sr and Nd isotopic ratios exhibit evolved values, spanning a large range from epsilon Nd of …

Cracking Of Zircaloy-4 In Acidic Solution Under Controlled Potentials, Elumalai Govindaraj Jan 2005

Cracking Of Zircaloy-4 In Acidic Solution Under Controlled Potentials, Elumalai Govindaraj

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The susceptibility of Zircaloy-4 (Zr-4), a leading cladding material for nuclear fuels, to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) has been determined in an acidic solution at ambient and elevated temperatures by using constant-load and slow-strain-rate (SSR) testing techniques. Since the cracking susceptibility of Zr-4 may be influenced by electrochemical potential resulting from the repository environment, SCC testing has been performed under anodic and cathodic controlled potentials (Econt). While no failures were observed at constant load, the results of SSR testing exhibited enhanced ductility but reduced failure stress at elevated temperatures. The corrosion potential, determined by the cyclic potentiodynamic polarization technique, became …

A Modified Bootstrap Method For Handling Non Detects In Environmental Data, Michelle Melissa Guillaume Jan 2005

A Modified Bootstrap Method For Handling Non Detects In Environmental Data, Michelle Melissa Guillaume

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Many samples taken for environmental purposes have concentrations that are measured below the detection limit. Below the detection limit does not mean that there is no concentration present; there may be a concentration present that cannot be accurately measured by the analytical instrument or cannot be determined with 95% confidence that the concentration is greater than zero (EPA, 1989). These concentrations are defined non-detects in the data. When the concentration of the contaminant of concern in a sample falls below the detection limit, it is standard laboratory procedure to represent these data as

An Investigation Of The Kaplan-Meier Upper Confidence Limit For The Population Mean From Environmental Samples With Nondetects, Violeta Graciela Hennessey Jan 2005

An Investigation Of The Kaplan-Meier Upper Confidence Limit For The Population Mean From Environmental Samples With Nondetects, Violeta Graciela Hennessey

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Kaplan-Meier (K-M) estimator is a non-parametric estimator of the survival function, used in lifetesting and medical follow-up studies where some of the observations are incomplete (right-censored data). In environmental applications, the user is faced with the problem of contaminant concentration falling below the limit of detection (DL) of the instrument (left-censored data). The K-M estimator has recently been proposed in environmental literature for computing the Upper Confidence Limit (UCL) of the mean in the presence of nondetects in environmental data sets. The properties of this UCL, however, have not been investigated. In this thesis, I propose to use Monte …

A Label Based Routing Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Naoto Kimura Jan 2005

A Label Based Routing Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Naoto Kimura

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

One of the challenging issues in wireless sensor networks is to acquire, process, and transmit information using the least amount of battery power; In response to this problem, a novel routing scheme for wireless sensor networks, called "Information Dissemination via Label Forwarding (IDLF)", is presented. IDLF consists of three information exchanging stages. In the first stage, a label is disseminated by a source. After a sink receives the label, it replies a request to the source. By exchanging a label and request, a data path between a source and sink is formed. Finally, an actual data is transmitted through the …

The Dynamics Of Nonviolence In The Palestinian-Israeli Conflict, Michael Doc Howard Jan 2005

The Dynamics Of Nonviolence In The Palestinian-Israeli Conflict, Michael Doc Howard

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Palestinian/Israeli conflict is one of the most challenging political puzzles of the modern era. Although this is a bold assertion, the influence of this one conflict on the politics of the Middle Eastern region and on the politics of the new millennium is overwhelming. Hence, figuring out how to solve the puzzle, or more realistically, contributing to movements towards a resolution is paramount. This thesis seeks to assist in the scholarship dedicated to achieving this end. It does so from a unique perspective; The thesis contends through a normative argument that a shift in Palestinian strategy, from violence to …

Characterization Of Alloy C-276 As A Structural Material For High-Temperature Heat Exchangers, Narendra V Kothapalli Jan 2005

Characterization Of Alloy C-276 As A Structural Material For High-Temperature Heat Exchangers, Narendra V Kothapalli

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This investigation was focused on characterizing the high-temperature tensile behavior and corrosion susceptibility of nickel-based Alloy C-276, a leading structural material for heat-exchangers in nuclear hydrogen generation. The tensile properties, evaluated at different temperatures, indicate that both the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength were gradually reduced with increasing temperature. However, the ductility parameters were not significantly influenced by the testing temperature. While no failures were observed in stress corrosion cracking (SCC) tests in an acidic solution under a constant-load, the true failure stress (sigmaf) was significantly reduced under a slow-strain-rate condition using both smooth and notched specimens. The critical …

On Using Block Principal Component Analysis For Reducing Gene-Expression Data Dimensions, Sang Hee Lee Jan 2005

On Using Block Principal Component Analysis For Reducing Gene-Expression Data Dimensions, Sang Hee Lee

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Since a microarray gene expression database contains a large number of variables and a relatively small number of samples, using and analyzing the databases require an intense, large-dimension computation method. Principal component analysis (PCA) is a useful tool to reduce the number of dimensions, and therefore, the complexity. PCA allows us to analyze the gene expression database with a relatively small data dimension without losing relevant information and increases the analytic visibility of the data. The initial computation using PCA, however, involves calculating a high-dimension covariance or correlation matrix and requires time and hardware resources which are limited in most …

Residence Choices Of Hispanic Neighborhoods In Nevada, Qiong Li Jan 2005

Residence Choices Of Hispanic Neighborhoods In Nevada, Qiong Li

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A well-known characteristic of Hispanic in the U.S. is their tendency to concentrate their settlement area in distinct locations. This study merges aggregate data of localities with micro observations to estimate the joint decisions of residential location and homeownership choice for Hispanics. To address the possibility that the disturbances in the regression may be correlated within groups, we apply a bivarite probit framework clustered by localities (PUMAs), using the Public Use Micro Statistics of Census 2000 data for Nevada. The results suggests that Hispanics choose to live in Hispanic enclaves are characterized by lower income, less English fluency, lower educational …

Semi-Active Control Techniques For Shock Isolation, Ganesh B Maganti

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis the problem of control of semi-active devices (MR damper, MR elastomer) for shock isolation systems are considered. Semi-active control systems combine the best features of both the passive and active control systems, offering the reliability of passive devices, yet maintaining the versatility and adaptability of fully active devices. First the question of stability and control of a two degree-of-freedom magnetorheological (MR) fluid damper shock isolation system is considered. It is shown that for any arbitrarily time varying input current, the system is absolutely stable. This explains the shock isolation capability of the MR damper system even with …

Justifying The Plaintiff's Receipt Of Punitive Damages, Marlisa Moschella

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis addresses the punitive damages reform issue of whether or not the plaintiff should receive the award. Reformers argue the purposes of punitive damages would be better served with other distribution options; and prioritized societal gains, above the gains of the plaintiff. The various purposes of punitive damages show that receipt by the plaintiff is in accordance with original intentions of punitive damages and serves justice. The historical and modern purposes of punitive damages such as vengeance satisfaction, redeeming honor, repairing insult, and supporting 'private attorneys general,' are maintained by the plaintiff receiving damages. These purposes provide an important …

Next, for following time-varying trajectories, an adaptive control system for yaw …

Petrogenesis Of Extracaldera Rhyolites At Yellowstone Volcanic Field: Evidence For An Evolving Silicic Magma System North Of Yellowstone Caldera, Nicole Marie Nastanski Jan 2005

Petrogenesis Of Extracaldera Rhyolites At Yellowstone Volcanic Field: Evidence For An Evolving Silicic Magma System North Of Yellowstone Caldera, Nicole Marie Nastanski

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Rhyolites erupted at 526--80 ka north of Yellowstone Caldera may record the most recent migration of the Yellowstone melting anomaly, yet their relation to the magma system that produced caldera-forming eruptions at 2.1, 1.3, and 0.64 Ma was previously unclear. New petrographic, geochronology, and geochemical data show that 10 of 12 rhyolites define a spatially (Norris-Mammoth corridor), temporally (326--80 ka), and chemically related group derived from a single magma system independent of the caldera-related magma system. These data are consistent with the establishment of a magma system of substantial longevity (>200 ka) and long magma residence times (up to …

The first objective of this research project was to evaluate the performance of various logic block architectures in FPGAs. Since logic blocks widely vary in size, functionality and complexity, we were motivated to explore them in detail. For our study, logic blocks from Actel, Altera, Quicklogic and Xilinx were chosen along with some designs discussed in the academia. These cells were either multiplexer based or look-up-table (LUT) based. Structural VHDL models of all these blocks were constructed and benchmarks circuits were mapped. Results at this stage suggested that, although the coarse grained cells occupied more area and showed poor utilization, …

The Method Of Fundamental Solutions For Solving Wave Equations, Lourdes Jeanette Rivera Jan 2005

The Method Of Fundamental Solutions For Solving Wave Equations, Lourdes Jeanette Rivera

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In recent years, the method of fundamental solutions (MFS) has emerged as a novel meshless method in the scientific computing community. In the past, the MFS was essentially restricted to solving homogeneous elliptic equations. Recently, the MFS has gradually extended to solving various types of elliptic and time-dependent problems through the uses of radial basis functions (RBFs); In this thesis, we focus on solving wave equations through the MFS. Currently, there are two major approaches to solve the wave equation: (i) elimination of the time dependence by using the Laplace transform and (ii) discretization in time to approximate the time …

Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid Inhibits Interleukin-1beta Stimulated Release Of Interleukin-6 From Rat C6 Glioma Cells: In Vitro Evidence For A Role Of P38 Map Kinase, Raghuram Royyuru

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

We investigated the pathway of IL-1beta stimulated IL-6 release and the involvement of different MAPK's effectors. We used three different MAPK inhibitors SB203580 for p38, SP600125 for JNK, and PD98059 for ERK kinases. We described the role of gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) and GABAB receptor in the inhibition of IL-1beta signal transduction; Bioassay results suggest that SB203580 inhibited IL-6 release while the other two MAPK inhibitors had no effect. It also suggested GABA inhibits the IL-1beta stimulated release of IL-6. By Western analysis we found that IL-1beta activated p38 MAPK time dependent fashion and we saw a maximum stimulation occurred at …
