Permissive Pornography: The Selective Censorship Of The Internet Under Cipa, Heidi Wachs

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note critiques the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and its implementation, arguing that while its intent to protect children from online pornography is laudable, the mandated use of Internet filters is flawed. The study demonstrates that current filtering technology often overblocks access to critical nonpornographic health information, particularly affecting vulnerable populations like teenagers seeking sexual health resources. The Supreme Court's ruling in United States v. American Library Association upheld CIPA, dismissing less restrictive alternatives, but the article contends that this approach may harm patrons by restricting access to essential information.

Patent Claim Interpretation And Information Costs, Christopher A. Cotropia Jan 2005

Patent Claim Interpretation And Information Costs, Christopher A. Cotropia

Law Faculty Publications

The concept of invention is crucial to patent law. Inventions of patentable quality are what the patent system is trying to encourage. In order to provide this incentive to produce such inventions, the patent system must provide protection for the invention. The problem the patent system runs into is that inventions are dijjicult to define-the dijjiculty stemming in part from the intangible nature of inventions. As a result, patent law encounters an information cost problem. Everyone in the patent system needs information about the invention, but the invention's intangibleness makes this information costly to produce, collect, and comprehend. Patent law …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Early generation selection experiments typically involve several hundred to thousands of lines. Various systematic and statistical techniques have been developed to increase effectiveness and efficiencies in such experiments, including the development and application of spatial statistical models. In this study, mixed model equations were used to provide least squares means (LSMEANs) and best linear unbiased predictors (BLUPs) and compare selection effectiveness and efficiencies to observed (Y) and true values in simulated experiments varying in size (10 X 10, 20 X 20 and 30 X 30 grids), control plots densities (0, 5, 10, 20, and 50%), control plot arrangements (high, medium, …

Review Of The Black Flies (Simuliidae) Of North America By: Peter H Adler, Douglas C Currie, And D Monty Wood, Jerome Hogsette

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Based on its title, one could expect this volume to be mainly a taxonomic reference for the North American Black Flies, but it is actually much more. The book is organized into five parts, each containing two to three of the 10 total chapters. Part I presents a very comprehensive overview of the subject (Chapter 1), followed by a history of the research (Chapter 2) that contains good historical references, as well as citations that are quite recent. Historical references are always welcome in any review section because they may have been published in regional or local literature that are …

Periplasm Organization In Treponema Denticola As Studied By Cryo-Electron Tomography, Jacques Izard, C.-E. Hsieh, C. A. Mannella, Ronald J. Limberger, M. Marko

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

As a spirochete, the genus Treponema is one of the few major bacterial groups whose natural phylogenic relationships are evident at the level of gross phenotypic characteristics such as their morphology. Treponema spp. are highly invasive due to their unique motility in dense media, and their ability to penetrate cell layers. This feature is associated with the helical cell body and the presence of flagellar filaments in the periplasm. Treponema denticola is an oral pathogen involved in endodontic infections and periodontal diseases. The presence and quantity of T. denticola in the subgingival biofilm is correlated with the severity of periodontal …

Common Ground: How A Course Collaboration Between Engineering And Women’S Studies Produced Fine Art, Donna Riley, Elisabeth Armstrong

Study of Women, Gender, & Sexuality: Faculty Publications

The Mass and Energy Balances course at Smith College collaborated with the Women’s Studies course on Youth Culture and Gender and with the feminist art collective subRosa to examine the relationships between cultures of production and the production of culture. The product of this collaboration was the interactive art installation “Can You See us Now? ¿Ya Nos Pueden Ver?” part of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA) exhibit “The Interventionists: Art in the Social Sphere.”

The museum site itself once housed the Sprague Electric capacitor factory, but globalization pressures resulted in exporting production to Juárez, Mexico. Thus, engineering …

Calculus-Based Physics Modules, Authors And Anecdotes, Robert Fuller, David Winch

Personalized System of Instruction (PSI), or Keller Plan, Materials

Fifteen experienced Keller Plan physicists gathered on the University of Colorado Boulder campus in the summer of 1975 to create a complete Keller Plan course for calculus-based physics. After three weeks, the original drafts, almost 1100 pages, were completed and the authors scattered to their places of employment. This poster tells stories about these module authors since 1975 and how the calculus-based physics modules were used.

Personalized System of Instruction (PSI), or Keller Plan, Materials

The Personalized System of Instruction (PSI), or Keller Plan – Thirty Years Later

In the early 1970s a mastery-oriented, self-paced style of instruction, called the Personalized System of Instruction, or Keller Plan, came into physics courses. For a few years the Keller Plan flourished and reached an apex in physics with the publication of a complete set of Keller Plan materials for the calculus-based physics course in 1975. By 1980 it had all but disappeared from physics courses. This presentation will discuss the features of the Keller Plan, the explanations of why it disappeared and what are some attributes of …

Influence Of Procedural And Distributive Variables On Settlement Rates In Employment Discrimination Mediation, The, E. Patrick Mcdermott, Danny Ervin

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Mediators and scholars are interested in factors that contribute to a successful mediation. The settlement of the dispute is one measure of success. If one could identify certain key process or outcome variables that caused more disputes to be settled in mediation, a mediator could use this information to maximize settlement potential. We seek to add to this search for the "holy grail" of mediation settlement.' Using an extensive database from the evaluation of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) we attempt to determine whether certain procedural and distributive factors are significant predictors of case resolution. We also examine whether …

Learning To See Beyond The Self: Accelerating Pre-Service Teacher Development Through Collaboration, Ronald Breghetto, Alexa Parker Jan 2005

Learning To See Beyond The Self: Accelerating Pre-Service Teacher Development Through Collaboration, Ronald Breghetto, Alexa Parker

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

A culture of isolation pervades the practice and preparation of teachers. Consequently, the development of teachers can be delayed and result in a focus on self-concerns rather than promoting student learning. Teacher educators have a unique opportunity to address this problem by creating opportunities for meaningful collaboration amongst pre-service teachers, supervisors, and faculty. The purpose of this article is to describe our experiences with an on-going collaborative teacher development project aimed at helping pre-service teachers to see beyond their personal concerns and work collaboratively toward promoting their own, their colleagues, and their students' learning. The body of the article is …

Evaluation Of Liquid Nitrogen Freeze Drying And Ethanol Dehydration As Methods To Preserve Partially Cooked Starch And Masa Systems, Roxana Yglesias, David S. Jackson Jan 2005

Evaluation Of Liquid Nitrogen Freeze Drying And Ethanol Dehydration As Methods To Preserve Partially Cooked Starch And Masa Systems, Roxana Yglesias, David S. Jackson

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Preservation of starch structure/properties. including structures formed during partial or complete cooking, are important when the impact of processing conditions is being studied. Two preservation techniques used to study changes in starch during thermal-mechanical processing are commonly cited in the literature: 1) rapid freezing followed by lyophilization, and 2) a dehydration procedure using alcohols. A comparative determination on how these methods affect various starch structures has not been widely reported. Corn starch samples were collected from the Rapid Visco-Analyser (RVA) at 3 min (swollen granules, 30°C), at the top of the pasting peak (gelatinized granules, 95°C), at the bottom of …

Systematics Of Mesocestoides (Cestoda: Mesocestoididae): Evaluation Of Molecular And Morphological Variation Among Isolates, Kerry A. Padgett, Steven A. Nadler, Linda Munson, Ben Sacks, Walter M. Boyce Jan 2005

Systematics Of Mesocestoides (Cestoda: Mesocestoididae): Evaluation Of Molecular And Morphological Variation Among Isolates, Kerry A. Padgett, Steven A. Nadler, Linda Munson, Ben Sacks, Walter M. Boyce

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

A hypothesis-based framework was used to test if 3 genetic strains of Mesocestoides (clades A, B, and C) are distinct evolutionary lineages, thereby supporting their delimitation as species. For comparative purposes, 3 established cestode species, Taenia pisiformis, Taenia serialis, and Taenia crassiceps were assessed using the same methods. Sequence data from mitochondrial rDNA (12S) and the second internal transcribed spacer of nuclear rDNA (ITS-2) revealed derived (autapomorphic) characters for lineages representing clade A (n = 6 autapomorphies), clade B (n = 4), and clade C (n = 9) as well as T. pisiformis (n = 15) and T. serialis …

Molecular Phylogenetics And Diagnosis Of Anisakis, Pseudoterranova, And Contracaecum From Northern Pacific Marine Mammals, Steven A. Nadler, Stefano D'Amelio, Murray D. Dailey, Lia Paggi, Sandra Siu, Jusy A. Sakanari

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Individual specimens of Anisakis, Pseudoterranova, and Contracaecum collected from marine mammals inhabiting northern Pacific waters were used for comparative diagnostic and molecular phylogenetic analyses. Forty-eight new sequences were obtained for this study of 14 Anisakis taxa, 8 Pseudoterranova taxa, 4 Contracaecum taxa, and 4 outgroup species. Partial 28S (LSU) and complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS-1, 5.8S, ITS-2) ribosomal DNA was amplified by the polymerase chain reaction and sequenced. Sequences of ITS indicated that Pseudoterranova specimens from Zalophus californianus (California sea lion), Mirounga angustirostris (northern elephant seal), Phoca vitulina (harbor seal), Enhydra lutris (sea otter), and Eumetopias jubatus (Steller’s …

The Technology Of Biopower: A Response To Todd May's "Foucault Now?", Ladelle Mcwhorter Jan 2005

The Technology Of Biopower: A Response To Todd May's "Foucault Now?", Ladelle Mcwhorter

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Because the occasion for his essay was the inaugural conference of the newly formed Foucault Society in New York City in the spring of 2005, Todd May takes as his point of departure the question of whether Foucault’s work is valuable to the sort of people who have come together to form that society: philosophers, artists, political activists, and in general to concerned citizens today, twenty years after Michel Foucault’s death. As might be expected given the Society’s raison d’être, May answers this question in the affirmative. But exactly how is Foucault’s work still relevant? It is his answer …

Service-Oriented Computing: Key Concepts And Principles, Michael N. Huhns, Munindar P. Singh Jan 2005

Service-Oriented Computing: Key Concepts And Principles, Michael N. Huhns, Munindar P. Singh

Faculty Publications

Traditional approaches to software development - the ones embodied in CASE tools and modeling frameworks - are appropriate for building individual software components, but they are not designed to face the challenges of open environments. Service-oriented computing provides a way to create a new architecture that reflects components' trends toward autonomy and heterogeneity. We thus emphasize SOC concepts instead of how to deploy Web services in accord with current standards. To begin the series, we describe the key concepts and abstractions of SOC and the elements of a corresponding engineering methodology.

Discord Behind The Table: The Internal Conflict Among Israeli Jews Concerning The Future Of Settlements In The West Bank And Gaza, Robert H. Mnookin, Ehud Eiran Jan 2005

Discord Behind The Table: The Internal Conflict Among Israeli Jews Concerning The Future Of Settlements In The West Bank And Gaza, Robert H. Mnookin, Ehud Eiran

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Our exclusive focus is on one of these conflicts-the profound internal rift among Israeli Jews over the Jewish settlements in the West Bank and Gaza. We are especially interested in the role of the national religious settlers and the Israeli government's response to them. These settlers lead the movement and are dominant actors in the internal conflict. The current controversies within Israel regarding Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's "unilateral initiative," which was not the product of a negotiation with Palestinians, demonstrate the importance of understanding the internal conflict within Israel and the dominant role of the leaders of the settlement movement
