A New Design Methodology For Mixed Level And Mixed Signal Simulation Using Pspice A/D And Vhdl, Sreeram Rajagopalan
A New Design Methodology For Mixed Level And Mixed Signal Simulation Using Pspice A/D And Vhdl, Sreeram Rajagopalan
Theses
PSpice A/D is a simulation package that is used to analyze and predict the performance of analog and mixed signal circuits. It is very popular especially among Printed Circuit Board (PCB) engineers to verify board level designs. However, PSpice A/D currently lacks the ability to simulate analog components connected to digital circuits that are modeled using Hardware Descriptive Languages (HDLs), such as VHDL and Verilog HDL. Simulation of HDL models in PSpice A/D is necessary to verify mixed signal PCBs where programmable logic devices like Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLDs) are connected to discrete …
The Role Of Size And Defensive Compounds In Mate Choice By Nyssodesmus Python (Polydesmida: Platyrhacidae), November 2005, Mercedes Burns
The Role Of Size And Defensive Compounds In Mate Choice By Nyssodesmus Python (Polydesmida: Platyrhacidae), November 2005, Mercedes Burns
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Large mates are preferred in a variety of species, presumably because larger size typically confers greater fitness. In chemically protected species, mates may prefer more toxic partners for the same reason. The common forest millipede Nyssodesmus python displays sexual dimorphism in body size and also produces a defensive compound containing hydrogen cyanide, making it an organism well suited to an experiment on mate preferences highlighting both size and presence of defense compounds. Here, 32 mate choice experiments showed a statistically significant preference between both sexes for larger mates; however, preference for mates with differing hydrogen cyanide ranks (based on a …
Mycorrhizal Fungi In Aerial And Terrestrial Roots Of An Epiphytic And Two Terrestrial Species Of Orchidaceae, November 2005, Derren A.R. Eaton
Mycorrhizal Fungi In Aerial And Terrestrial Roots Of An Epiphytic And Two Terrestrial Species Of Orchidaceae, November 2005, Derren A.R. Eaton
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Very little is known about the mycorrhizal relationships of Costa Rican orchids, and even less is known about differences in the presence of mycorrhizae between aerial and substrate roots. All orchids require mycorrhizal symbionts during their germination stage, but few studies have examined mycorrhizal relationships in adult orchids. Aerial and substrate roots from three closely related species of Orchidaceae (two terrestrial and one epiphytic) were collected and examined for the presence of mycorrhizal fungi. Mycorrhizal fungi were found in 45 of 51 individuals. The epiphytic species exhibited a much lower occurrence of mycorrhizae in its aerial roots than the two …
Extra Extrafloral Nectaries And Anti-Herbivory Protection In Inga Sierrae (Fabaceae: Mimosaceae), November 2005, Camryn Pennington
Extra Extrafloral Nectaries And Anti-Herbivory Protection In Inga Sierrae (Fabaceae: Mimosaceae), November 2005, Camryn Pennington
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) in plants are known to attract insects such as ants and wasps that drink nectar and in turn protect the plant from herbivores (Bentley 1977). In this study, ten year old Inga sierrae (Fabaceae: Mimosaceae) trees planted on a fallow pasture at 1535 m in Monteverde, Costa Rica have been observed to have extra EFNs on their leaflets in addition to the normal three located on the rachis between the leaflet pairs. The leaves of 20 trees were sampled to determine the local distribution of EFN number. Percent herbivory was determined for leaves with a varying number …
Terrestrial Macroinvertebrate Fauna Under Logs In Primary And Secondary Forest, November 2005, Erica Hoaglund
Terrestrial Macroinvertebrate Fauna Under Logs In Primary And Secondary Forest, November 2005, Erica Hoaglund
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Terrestrial macroinvertebrates are an important yet understudied group. They are present in all types of tropical forests and, due to their services as decomposers, are essential for the maintenance of a productive system. The purpose of this study was to determine if there were significant differences in diversity and community composition between macroinvertebrate communities in the primary versus secondary lower montane wet forest of Monteverde, Costa Rica. Macroinvertebrates were collected from under 20 logs in primary and 20 logs in secondary forest. Primary forest had a higher diversity of macroinvertebrates (H’ = 2.5) than secondary forest (H’ = 2.05). Primary …

Database Of The Macrofungi Of The Monteverde Reserve, November 2005, Corey Rogers
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Fungi serve important roles in natural systems and have strong economic and social consequences for human populations. A database of the macrofungi of the Monteverde Reserve was created to ease identification and facilitate research on local macrofungi. The database includes 30 species, with 18 families and 22 genera represented. The database was organized in a system of nested folders, providing both morphological and taxonomic keys. Information files were created for each species, including digital photographs of specimens and spore prints (when applicable), and taxonomic, microhabitat, growth, and morphological data. This database provides a structure for future cataloguing and identification, with …
Effect Of Herbivory On Succession Of Forest Light Gaps, November 2005, Toby Jacobs
Effect Of Herbivory On Succession Of Forest Light Gaps, November 2005, Toby Jacobs
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Effects of herbivory have been seen to vary according to the particular growth form of a plant and its habitat. The idea that these factors can interact to determine the nature of gap succession has been suggested but has not yet been thoroughly explored. Leaves of pioneer, understory, and canopy plants were collected and analyzed to quantify herbivory levels on each growth form. Herbivory was found to be higher in gaps (p = 0.0015), and this was true to varying degrees with respect to growth forms and single families. Results suggest that herbivory is not the main factor influencing instantaneous …
Effects Of Weather Conditions On Pollinator Behavior At Stachytarpheta Jamaicensis (Verbenaceae), November 2005, Michelle Murguia Tamez
Effects Of Weather Conditions On Pollinator Behavior At Stachytarpheta Jamaicensis (Verbenaceae), November 2005, Michelle Murguia Tamez
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Competition between pollinators, such as nectar-eating birds, bats, and small insects, plays an important role in understanding resource distribution among feeding guilds (Murray et al. 2000). This study suggested that territorial behaviors exhibited by hummingbirds are not hardwired, but rather, they may be affected by abiotic factors such as weather conditions. An individual may increase its energy budget through selective defense of a plant. Hummingbird and butterfly visits to and agonistic interactions (i.e. chases) at a Stachytarpheta jamaicensis plant were observed for a total of 40 hours and weather conditions were quantified. As the activity of butterflies (a competing species) …
Community Composition And Diversity Of Lichens Along A Disturbance Gradient In San Luis, Costa Rica, November 2005, Sarah Hosford
Community Composition And Diversity Of Lichens Along A Disturbance Gradient In San Luis, Costa Rica, November 2005, Sarah Hosford
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
This research was conducted to better understand lichen morphology and diversity in different habitats in San Luis, Costa Rica. Lichens on trees in adjacent pasture, forest edge, and mature forest areas were identified to morphospecies and the species richness, diversity and total coverage per tree was compared across habitats. Eighteen different morphospecies were found across all three habitats. The forest trees had the lowest species richness and diversity, while the forest edge and the pasture had the highest.
Community Composition Coleopteran’S At Two Different Elevational Ranges, November 2005, Carrington Dahmer
Community Composition Coleopteran’S At Two Different Elevational Ranges, November 2005, Carrington Dahmer
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The order Coleoptera is the most diverse among animals, composing 70-80% of all described animals in the world. (White 1983) Even though this order is the most described in the world, there is still very little known about their composition in the canopy. Diversity and abundance of the canopy was investigated along elevational ranges attempting to find whether the increase in elevation played a factor in the Coleopteran composition within the canopy. Beetles were sampled at two different elevations in the Monteverde cloud forest at La Estación Biológica, Monteverde, Costa Rica. Diversity was found to be highest at the low …

The Virginia Uniform Trust Code, John E. Donaldson, Robert T. Danforth
University of Richmond Law Review
In its 2005 Session, the Virginia General Assembly enacted Senate Bill 891,1 thus adopting the Uniform Trust Code ("UTC"), with modifications considered appropriate to this state's institutions, traditions, and jurisprudence. The Virginia Uniform Trust Code ("Virginia UTC"), set forth in new Chapter 31 of Title 55 of the Virginia Code, has an effective date of July 1, 2006, but, once in effect, it will be applicable (with some exceptions) to trusts created before, on, or after that date. The new Virginia UTC, which encompasses the great bulk of the principles and rules that comprise the law of trusts in Virginia, …

2005 Indiana County Highway Departments Bridge Replacement Cost Estimation Procedures, Indiana Ltap
Indiana Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) Publications
This report is intended to provide county bridge officials a simple, straight forward method to estimate the costs of replacing county bridges. The report uses information from bridges constructed from 1997 through 2005, which was obtained through surveys completed by Indiana counties. Regressions were performed on the data and a spreadsheet prepared that allows users to input Average Daily Traffic (ADT) and the old bridge length to obtain an estimate for the cost of a replacement bridge.

Automated Adaptive Intrusion Containment In Systems Of Interacting Services, Yu-Sung Wu, Bingrui Foo, Yu-Chun Mao, Saurabh Bagchi, Eugene H. Spafford
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Large scale distributed systems typically have interactions among different services that create an avenue for propagation of a failure from one service to another. The failures being considered may be the result of natural failures or malicious activity, collectively called disruptions. To make these systems tolerant to failures it is necessary to contain the spread of the occurrence automatically once it is detected. The objective is to allow certain parts of the system to continue to provide partial functionality in the system in the face of failures. Real world situations impose several constraints on the design of such a disruption …

Automated Monitor Based Diagnosis In Distributed Systems, Gunjan Khanna, Mike Yu Cheng, Padma Varadharajan, Saurabh Bagchi, Miguel P. Correia, Paulo J. Veríssimo
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In today's world where distributed systems form many of our critical infrastructures, dependability outages are becoming increasingly common. In many situations, it is necessary to not just detect a failure, but also to diagnose the failure, i.e., to identify the source of the failure. Diagnosis is challenging since high throughput applications with frequent interactions between the different components allow fast error propagation. It is desirable to consider applications as black-boxes for the diagnosis process. In this paper, we propose a Monitor architecture for diagnosing failures in large-scale network protocols. The Monitor only observes the message exchanges between the protocol entities …
Predicting Protein Structure And Function Using Machine Learning Methods, Mary Q. Yang, Jack Y. Yang, Okay K. Ersoy
Predicting Protein Structure And Function Using Machine Learning Methods, Mary Q. Yang, Jack Y. Yang, Okay K. Ersoy
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Many of the central questions in bioinformatics relate to protein structure and function. We are mainly be concerned with three problems: identifying transmembrane segments in proteins, distinguishing disordered from ordered regions, and determining protein function from sequence information. In order to deal effectively with these problems, we have conducted an in-depth analyses of the physiochemical properties of the amino acids that make up proteins and the amino acid compositions of the various types of proteins. We approach the above questions from a machine learning perspective; the advantage of machine learning approaches over traditional laboratory methods is that the former are …
