Une Société Nouvelle: The Decline Of The Gaullist Party And France's Move To The Left, Neal A. Novak Jan 2005

Une Société Nouvelle: The Decline Of The Gaullist Party And France's Move To The Left, Neal A. Novak

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis is concerned with French politics in the thirteen years after 1968. After the wave of street demonstrations, seizure of schools, and worker sit-ins that beset the country in May of that year, many people in France became convinced of the need to alter the political status quo. In the years that followed, the country’s largest and most dominant political grouping, the Gaullist party, experienced a dramatic loss of electoral support. Between 1968 and 1981, the Gaullists lost control of the National Assembly, the premiership, and the presidency. By May 1981, France’s Fifth Republic was governed by a leftist …

Restoration Success Of Backfilling Canals In Coastal Louisiana Marshes, Joseph Baustian Jan 2005

Restoration Success Of Backfilling Canals In Coastal Louisiana Marshes, Joseph Baustian

LSU Master's Theses

The need for effective marsh restoration techniques in Louisiana is a pressing issue as the state continues to lose coastal wetlands. Returning spoil banks to canals, known as "backfilling", is an attractive restoration option because it restores marsh, prevents future wetland loss, and is cost effective. The direct conversion of marsh to canals and spoil banks accounted for over 22% of Louisiana's wetland loss from 1930 to 1990, and the indirect losses associated with canal dredging are even larger. The restoration success of 30 canals, backfilled twenty years ago, was examined in this study and compared to restoration success shortly …

The Effect Of Age And Sex On The Growth Patterns Of Bovine Cell Lines, Jeho Shin Jan 2005

The Effect Of Age And Sex On The Growth Patterns Of Bovine Cell Lines, Jeho Shin

LSU Master's Theses

The influence of donor animal sex or age on in vitro bovine cell culture was evaluated to provide foundation information for the selection of donor tissue for nuclear transfer. Skin biopsies were taken from each of sixteen individuals including four bulls (B), four cows (C), four male calves (MC), four female calves (FC). At passage 2, cells from in vitro culture of cell lines were influenced not by gender but by age in the mean cell generation time (MGT). When evaluating familial lineage, comparison between related and unrelated groups showed that most comparisons do not show significant differences in lag …

Evaluation Of Vetiver Oil And Alate Biology As Preventative Measures Against The Formosan Subterranean Termite, Coptotermes Formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), Karen Elizabeth Nix Jan 2005

Evaluation Of Vetiver Oil And Alate Biology As Preventative Measures Against The Formosan Subterranean Termite, Coptotermes Formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), Karen Elizabeth Nix

LSU Master's Theses

The Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, is responsible for over $1 billion in property damage, repairs, and control in the United States. Presently, control of this exotic pest depends mainly on chemical methods. There is an increasing interest in using natural products in pest control because of their low mammalian toxicity and environmental safety. Chemical components of the roots of vetiver grass, Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) Nash, have shown to be effective repellents and toxicants to Formosan subterranean termites. Objectives of this research were to evaluate: 1) vetiver grass root growth and its oil distribution; 2) vetiver oil, nootkatone, and …

Liquid Architectures: Marcos Novak's Territory Of Information, Camile A. Silva Jan 2005

Liquid Architectures: Marcos Novak's Territory Of Information, Camile A. Silva

LSU Master's Theses

The idea of interactivity between humans and their environment no longer represents the only way of exploring new experiences. Equally passé is the idea that information constitutes the means for this interaction. However, this paper presents that the contemporary idea for interaction has embraced new understandings of the content of experience and the structure of space. New electronic technologies and advanced digital media have separated realities from the realm of the body and transformed experiences into a ubiquitous event. The architectural discourse, that once has been largely a discourse of form and style, has finally overcome those limitations and has …

La Madame Et La Mademoiselle: Creole Women In Louisiana, 1718-1865, Katy Frances Morlas Jan 2005

La Madame Et La Mademoiselle: Creole Women In Louisiana, 1718-1865, Katy Frances Morlas

LSU Master's Theses

In Louisiana during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a unique group of people known as Creole created a culture that differed from the rest of the United States. Descendants of the first French and Spanish settlers, Creoles both black and white struggled to maintain their heritage despite an influx of Anglo-American Protestants into Louisiana; women in particular sought to preserve their culture. Although black Creole women have received significant attention, their white counterparts remain virtually absent in scholarship. This thesis focuses on the lives of white Creole women in the River Parishes and New Orleans and seeks to recreate the …

Advanced Grid Stiffened Composite Structures, Dinesh Maricherla

LSU Master's Theses

In this study Advanced Grid Stiffened (AGS) composite structures are developed and analyzed for their mechanical properties. It is widely known that these structures possess light weight, high strength, and inherent impact resistance. Because of the advantages mentioned above, the AGS composite structures find many applications in aerospace, ship building and construction industries. The purpose of this study is to manufacture AGS composite structures and analyze AGS composite structures as reinforcement members. A FEA model is also developed and validated with the test results. Parametric analysis is also conducted to investigate the effects of different design parameters on these structures. …

Fracture Toughness Characterization Of Syntactic Foams, Vijay Gorugantu Jan 2005

Fracture Toughness Characterization Of Syntactic Foams, Vijay Gorugantu

LSU Master's Theses

Hollow particle filled polymeric materials called syntactic foams are used as core materials in sandwich composite structures. Syntactic foams find applications in aeronautical and space structures and therefore demand careful study and testing before they can be put to service. In the first part of this thesis work, syntactic foams are fabricated by varying the volume fraction of microballoons and also their density. Four different densities of microballoons are used ranging from 0.22 g/cc to 0.46 g/cc. The volume fraction of the microballoons is varied from 30% to 65%. A set of 3-point bending tests are conducted on these foam …

Tonality And Drama In Verdi's "La Traviata", David Bradley Easley Jan 2005

Tonality And Drama In Verdi's "La Traviata", David Bradley Easley

LSU Master's Theses

Scholars hold opposing views concerning the importance of large-scale key relations in Verdi's operas. Julian Budden states that, since Verdi often allowed transpositions of his music in performance, one must take care in assigning structural importance to Verdi's key schemes. Others, including David Lawton, place much significance on Verdi's choice of keys. Lawton describes methods by which Verdi intensifies dramatic situations through associative tonality and recurring musical themes. In La Traviata, several recurring musical themes undergo transposition, a device that Wagner scholar Robert Bailey calls expressive tonality, which is the repetition or recall of a passage transposed by semitone …

Evaluation Of The Spatial Removal Of Nitrogen In The Marshland Upwelling System, Andrea Reneé Turriciano Jan 2005

Evaluation Of The Spatial Removal Of Nitrogen In The Marshland Upwelling System, Andrea Reneé Turriciano

LSU Master's Theses

The Marshland Upwelling System (MUS) is an alternative onsite wastewater treatment technology designed to utilize the natural ecology of saltwater marshes to remove human-borne contaminants. Over the past twelve years, MUSs have been installed in Port Fourchon, Louisiana, Moss Point, Mississippi, and Bayou Segnette, Louisiana. The purpose of this study was to investigate the nitrogen reduction capabilities of the Bayou Segnette system. The objectives of this research were to: 1) determine the first-order removal constants necessary for the development of nitrogen transport equations, 2) explore the spatial dependencies of nitrogen concentrations within the Bayou Segnette system, and 3) determine the …

Evaluation Of The Central Narthex Portal At Sainte-Madeleine De Vèzelay, Christine Ann Zeringue Jan 2005

Evaluation Of The Central Narthex Portal At Sainte-Madeleine De Vèzelay, Christine Ann Zeringue

LSU Master's Theses

This study examines possible interpretations for the central portal sculpture found in the narthex of the church of Sainte-Madeleine de Vèzelay in France. I will discuss and support alternative interpretations of the biblical, monastic, and artistic origins of this unusual and puzzling sculpture. Studies on the narthex sculpture debate the program’s subject matter, suggesting that it may refer to the Pentecost, the Mission of the Apostles, the Ascension, or exerts of biblical text, specifically, Ephesians 2: 11-22. The thesis will also discuss the sculpture’s meaning to the lay and monastic communities living in Vézelay. It will be proposed that the …

Ternary Logic To Binary Bit Conversion Using Multiple Input Floating Gate Mosfets In 0.5 Micron N-Well Cmos Technology, Sowmya Subramanian

LSU Master's Theses

In the present work, a CMOS ternary to binary bit conversion technique has been proposed using multiple input floating gate MOSFETs. The proposed circuit has been implemented in 0.5 µm n-well CMOS technology. The ternary input signals of {-1, 0, +1} are represented as -3 V, 0 V and +3 V, respectively. The ternary input is given as a combination of any two of the three voltage levels and the 4-bit binary output is generated in which the left most bit is sign bit (SB) followed by most significant bit (MSB), second significant bit (SSB) and the least significant bit …

The Role Of Perturbation On Biochemical Systems: Salt, Ph, And Microgravity Effects On Protein-Ligand And Small Molecule Interactions, Gregory S. Thompson Jan 2005

The Role Of Perturbation On Biochemical Systems: Salt, Ph, And Microgravity Effects On Protein-Ligand And Small Molecule Interactions, Gregory S. Thompson

LSU Master's Theses

DNA binding by the type I DNA polymerases from Escherichia coli (Klenow) and Thermus aquaticus (Klentaq) has been examined under varying ionic conditions. Klenow and Klentaq both show increased affinity for DNA substrate in the presence of KAcetate over KCl. Ionic linkage relationships were determined for Klenow and Klentaq in KAcetate. Klenow and Klentaq DNA binding show similar ion releases in KAcetate and KCl (~4-5 ions in Klenow, and ~3-4 ions in Klentaq). Interestingly, Klenow and Klentaq exhibit differential ion release in KGlutamate (~4-5 ions in Klentaq and ~2 ions in Klenow). DNA structure dependence of binding was examined for …

Reciprocal Peer Tutoring And Treatment Integrity Of Elementary School Students, Brian M. Esteve Jan 2005

Reciprocal Peer Tutoring And Treatment Integrity Of Elementary School Students, Brian M. Esteve

LSU Master's Theses

Academic concerns are the most common reason students are referred for special services in schools. This obviously leads to the necessity for schools to have secondary prevention services in place to address the needs of students who are struggling. Peer tutoring, in its various forms, has been well documented as an effective and inexpensive intervention for all academic areas. Despite the promise of peer tutoring, research evidence suggests that teachers may not consistently carry out their roles in the peer tutoring process with sufficient accuracy to ensure positive outcomes. One possible solution to this problem is to have a consultant …

Mapping The Other Truth In The Shintech Case: Emancipatory Mapping For Environmental Justice In South Louisiana, Charles Allen Flanagan Jan 2005

Mapping The Other Truth In The Shintech Case: Emancipatory Mapping For Environmental Justice In South Louisiana, Charles Allen Flanagan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation presents an alternative mapping approach which challenges the hegemony of abstract space and instrumental reason propagated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in its 1998 study of the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality's (DEQ) permitting process. The "other truth" is presented through application of concepts from critical theory, critical geography, and the works of Henri Lefebvre to a specific environmental justice struggle in St. James Parish, Louisiana. In 1996 Shintech, Inc. proposed building a polyvinyl chloride facility in St. James Parish, Louisiana. The community, concerned about the considerable toxic burden already present in the area, formed a …

Oxygen Uptake Efficiency Slope And Functional Physical Performance In Elderly Adults, Scott Eric Fuller Jan 2005

Oxygen Uptake Efficiency Slope And Functional Physical Performance In Elderly Adults, Scott Eric Fuller

LSU Master's Theses

Background: The Oxygen Uptake Efficiency Slope (OUES) attained during submaximal treadmill exercise is a reliable index of cardiorespiratory capacity in older adults. This investigation compares OUES values derived during treadmill walking and performance of the Continuous Scale Physical Function Performance test (CS-PFP). Method: A Cosmed portable metabolic cart was used to collect breath gases in 36 older adults (age: 81.8 +/- 7.8 years). Twenty-one subjects performed both the incremental treadmill test and the CS-PFP while an additional 15 subjects performed the CS-PFP, only. Results: The regression of log Ventilation vs. VO2 reveals similar correlations for the CS-PFP and treadmill …

Temporal Trends In Tchula Period Pottery In Louisiana, Steven Ray Fullen Jan 2005

Temporal Trends In Tchula Period Pottery In Louisiana, Steven Ray Fullen

LSU Master's Theses

Tchula period pottery (Tchefuncte culture) in Louisiana is characterized by highly contorted and laminated pastes. These diagnostic traits have led investigators to suggest hypotheses concerning manufacturing techniques, but there has been relatively little focus on temporal trends associated with these characteristics. The first step in redressing this problem was to identify a site likely to contain archaeological assemblages that would span the Tchula period. Excavations began at the Sarah Peralta site (16EBR67) in the fall of 2001 and were concluded in the spring of 2002. Artifacts from this site were characterized according to standard identification procedures. A secondary site, the …

Modeling And Experimentation Of Drying Of Adipose Derived Adult Stem Cells, Surbhi Mittal Jan 2005

Modeling And Experimentation Of Drying Of Adipose Derived Adult Stem Cells, Surbhi Mittal

LSU Master's Theses

Development of protocols for storing desiccated cells at ambient temperatures offers tremendous economic and practical advantages over traditional storage procedures such as cryopreservation and freeze-drying. An integrated frame work of experimentation and modeling is adopted in the present work to develop procedures for storage of adult stem cells at ambient temperature. As a first step, we have measured the post-rehydration membrane integrity of two passages, Passage-0 (P0) and Passage-1 (P1), of human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs). hASCs were dried using a convective stage at three different drying rates (slow, moderate and rapid) in D-PBS with trehalose (50 mM) and glycerol …

Cognitive Adaptation's Implication On Diabetic Adherence, Martin Ancona Jan 2005

Cognitive Adaptation's Implication On Diabetic Adherence, Martin Ancona

LSU Master's Theses

Diabetes, affecting more than 18 million people in the United States, is an epidemic problem. The illness is usually progressive, leading to neuropathy, blindness, and limb amputation. The most common type of the illness, Type 2 diabetes, is usually controllable through a strict combination of diet, exercise, and medication. However, non-compliance, rather than compliance, to prescribed diabetes regimens is the norm. Although past research has uncovered many of the reason that diabetics may fail to adhere to their regimen, the whole puzzle has not yet been solved. This study looked at the Cognitive Adaptation Theory in relation to diabetic adherence. …

Electrodeposition Of Magnetic Nanowires And Nanotubes, Despina Mehedintu Davis Jan 2005

Electrodeposition Of Magnetic Nanowires And Nanotubes, Despina Mehedintu Davis

LSU Master's Theses

The current perpendicular to the plane giant magneto-resistance (CPP)-(GMR) effect makes multilayered nanowires of huge interest as magnetic sensor materials. GMR showing multilayer nanostructures are composed of alternating ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic nanometric layers. The giant magnetoresistance (GMR) property is described as a change in electrical resistance when an external magnetic field is introduced. Electrodeposition is the most efficient method for fabricating magnetic nanowires. In addition to the cost-effectiveness, electrodeposition is one of the few methods that can overcome the geometrical restrictions of inserting metals into very deep nanometric recesses, making it the favored method for nanowire and nanotube fabrication. In …

Offshore Oil And Gas Platforms As Stepping Stones For Expansion Of Coral Communities: A Molecular Genetic Analysis, Amy D. Atchison Jan 2005

Offshore Oil And Gas Platforms As Stepping Stones For Expansion Of Coral Communities: A Molecular Genetic Analysis, Amy D. Atchison

LSU Master's Theses

The northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM) is one of the most productive oil and gas exploration areas in the world, currently containing approximately 3,800 offshore platforms. These platforms serve as artificial reefs in shallow water, which until their introduction was nearly devoid of shallow hard substrata. The question is raised whether this newly available substrate could help expand coral populations in the GOM. In this study, I examined adult scleractinian corals on oil and gas platforms in the northern GOM, in the vicinity of the Flower Garden Banks (FGB; approximately 180 km SE of Galveston, Texas) and attempted to determine …

Effects Of 5-Ht2 Receptor Ligands On Tail Pinch-Induced Stress Responding And Open Field Behavior, John K. Hearn

LSU Master's Theses

Stress is known to exert an influence on neuroendocrine, autonomic, hormonal, and immune functioning. As a result of the debilitating effects of stress on numerous bodily systems, there exists a large body of research devoted to the etiology, physiological sequelae, and treatment of the condition. Further, the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT) has been implicated in stress responding. Presently, there is conflict in the literature as to the precise role serotonin plays in mediating the stress response. This study was an attempt to further elucidate the role of 5-HT in mediating an organism’s response to tail pinch stress and the open field. …

Jury Knowledge Of Eyewitness Memory: Can Jurors Use This Knowledge In The Courtroom?, Jill D. Alonzo Jan 2005

Jury Knowledge Of Eyewitness Memory: Can Jurors Use This Knowledge In The Courtroom?, Jill D. Alonzo

LSU Master's Theses

As a result of Daubert, trial judges were advised to only admit an expert once they determine 1) that the testimony is supported with scientific evidence and 2) would assist the trier(s) of fact. The present studies were designed to address the second criterion of admissibility by 1) assessing jurors' knowledge of eyewitness memory, and 2) determining if they can apply this knowledge when assessing mock courtroom testimony. In the first study, subjects evaluated trial transcripts of testimony concerning an eyewitness account where factors that influence eyewitness memory were present in either a negative form or a positive form. In …

Assessment Of Water Conservation Technique In Rice Culture To Develop Water Use Policies, Manoch Kongchum Jan 2005

Assessment Of Water Conservation Technique In Rice Culture To Develop Water Use Policies, Manoch Kongchum

LSU Master's Theses

The rapid growth of world population has resulted in significantly increased global water demand. According to a recent report on limited water supply, conservation techniques and water use policies are needed to preserve water resources. Worldwide agriculture is the largest consumer of water, particularly for growing rice. Water use for rice production was chosen because rice will continue to be a staple crop for the majority of the world’s population and because of its pervasive use of water. Hence, this thesis was designed to investigate water conservation possibilities for rice production in two water management regimes: alternate flooding and drying, …

The Abolition Of Wealth Transfer Taxes: Lessons From Canada, Australia And New Zealand, David G. Duff Jan 2005

The Abolition Of Wealth Transfer Taxes: Lessons From Canada, Australia And New Zealand, David G. Duff

All Faculty Publications

When the United States acted to phase-out its estate tax by 2010, it joined a small but growing group of countries which have also repealed their wealth transfer taxes. In Canada, federal gift and estate taxes were repealed in 1972 and provincial wealth transfer taxes were abolished in the 1970s and 1980s. In Australia, State and Commonwealth wealth transfer taxes were repealed in the late 1970s and early 1980s. New Zealand followed suit in the 1990s, reducing estate tax rates to zero in 1992 and repealing the tax in 1999. This paper reviews the abolition of wealth transfer taxes in …

Four Dimensional Presentations As A New Representation Method: A Proposal For The Use Of Interactive Multimedia Presentation In Landscape Architecture, Kinoto Miyakoda Jan 2005

Four Dimensional Presentations As A New Representation Method: A Proposal For The Use Of Interactive Multimedia Presentation In Landscape Architecture, Kinoto Miyakoda

LSU Master's Theses

Few studies on presentation methods in the profession of landscape architecture have been done in the past, because evaluating presentations raises primarily subjective issues. Today, interactive multimedia presentations offer an excellent opportunity to investigate the presentation methods employed by landscape architects, gCan new communication technologies help to enhance the communication between the presenter and his audience?h This is the fundamental question addressed in this thesis. It explores interactive multimedia presentations to see their potentials, and considers ways to integrate various multimedia as presentation methods for future landscape architectural presentations. The main terms, interactivity and multimedia, are explained to understand the …

Three Views Of Anomaly And Their Heuristic Utility, Robert Rose Jan 2005

Three Views Of Anomaly And Their Heuristic Utility, Robert Rose

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis presents three views of anomaly in explanation: the linguistic view, the perceptual view, and the mechanistic view. The linguistic view is based on the notion that an anomaly is an instance of logical inconsistency. According to the perceptual view, an anomaly is a perceptual event which consists of a phenomenon deviating from a paradigmatic set of expectations. Lastly, the mechanistic view defines anomaly as a phenomenon which reveals the predictive failure of a model of the mechanism underlying the phenomenon to be explained. Each view is evaluated in terms of its heuristic utility, in two ways: first, according …

In Search Of Delicious, Ariya Martin Jan 2005

In Search Of Delicious, Ariya Martin

Theses

What is art? What is good art? Who are considered Artists, and why? Most important, can the very process by which we go through every day in our lives lead to an acceptable form of art-making? Furthermore, can life, my life, be put into a visual format to be viewed from outside of my life? Over the last two years I have been working with words as images, with a concept of installation as dialogue between the space, the artist, and the viewer. In my recently completed thesis show the work dealt with both the challenge of “writing a picture”, …

By The Numbers: The Region Votes Its Fate, Richard A. Clucas, Alton Straub Jan 2005

By The Numbers: The Region Votes Its Fate, Richard A. Clucas, Alton Straub

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

The author examined how the residents in the five-county region of the metropolitan area (Clackamas, Columbia, Multnomah, Washington, and Yamhill) voted in the 2004 general election on selected ballot measures in order to understand the political values of the neighborhoods in which we live. Using geographic information systems (GIS), we mapped the distribution of votes by election precinct on what we thought were three of the most revealing measures: the constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages (Measure 36), the initiative requiring state and local governments to pay landowners when land-use restrictions reduce property value (Measure 37), and the constitutional amendment limiting …

Portland's Regional Economy: The Dynamics Of Change, Sheila A. Martin, Amy S. Vander Vliet Jan 2005

Portland's Regional Economy: The Dynamics Of Change, Sheila A. Martin, Amy S. Vander Vliet

Institute of Metropolitan Studies Publications

As the Portland-Vancouver economy emerges from recession, regional residents must come to terms with the realities of a restructured economy. The familiar sectors and industries upon which we based success in the past likely will no longer sustain us, at least to the degree they once did. We are simultaneously witnessing the rebuilding of an economy while suffering the symptoms of radical change. The slowdown that began in the Portland region in the summer of 2000 was caused, in part, by cyclical downturns in several of the region's key industries. As the region continues to recover, it will most likely …
