A Type Collection Of Cvccvccvc Words, A. Ross Eckler

Word Ways

Among nine-letter words of the vowel-consonant pattern CVCCVCCVC, can one find all 125 possible vowel sections? Elsewhere in this issue, Hugo Brandt Corstius in "Battus in Wonderland" has constructed a story in which 125 Dutch words of this nature are featured. In English, it is possible to find 121 words in Webster's Second, as given in the table below (the numbers following some words indicate the number of occurrences in Kucera and Francis's million-word corpus Computational Analysis of Present-Day American English (1967).

Bell's Spaceships: A Useful Relativistic Paradox, Francisco J. Flores Nov 2005

Bell's Spaceships: A Useful Relativistic Paradox, Francisco J. Flores

Philosophy

Bell’s spaceship ‘paradox’ [1] in special relativity is a particularly good one to examine with students, because although it deals with accelerated motions, it can be dissolved with elementary space–time diagrams. Furthermore, it forces us to be very clear about the relativity of simultaneity, proper length, and the ‘reality’ of the Lorentz contraction.

Optimal Adaptation In Autonomic Web Processes With Inter-Service Dependencies, Kunal Verma, Prashant Doshi, Karthik Gomadam, John A. Miller, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

We present methods for optimally adapting Web processes to exogenous events while preserving inter-service dependencies. For example, in a supply chain process, orders placed by the manufacturer may get delayed in arriving. In response to this event, the manufacturer has the choice of either waiting out the delay or changing the supplier.

The Screech Owl Reasoner - Scalable Approximate Abox Reasoning With Owl, Pascal Hitzler, Denny Vrandecic Nov 2005

The Screech Owl Reasoner - Scalable Approximate Abox Reasoning With Owl, Pascal Hitzler, Denny Vrandecic

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

We present a preliminary version of the approximate OWL reasoning system SCREECH. It builds on the KAON2 system and performs OWL ABox reasoning in an approximate manner. It trades soundness of reasoning for efficiency, with resulting polynomial worst-case data complexity. It has been developed for use in time-critical applications where quick response time is more important than a full guarantee of correctness of answers. The theoretical background for the system is explained in [Hitzler and Vrandecic, 2005] and is being presented at the conference.

The Demise Of African American Participation In Baseball: A Cultural Backlash From The Negro Leagues, David C. Ogden

But the end of the Negro Leagues and the desegregation of baseball heralded a new era that marked the beginning of a cultural drift between baseball and African Americans. This paper will explore the social factors embedded in the Negro Leagues that gave baseball cultural relevance for African Americans and what is impeding those factors from operating again.

Research Note: International Issues In Media And Information Literacy, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt

Communication Faculty Publications

The emerging field of media and information literacy studies continues to be influenced by a wide range of interdisciplinary research. An inventory of current research on media and information literacy, using Studies in Media & Information Literacy Education (SIMILE) as a database, reveal emphases in studies about schools and education, library usage, mass media, intercultural communication, and global media. As individuals around the globe are empowered by their media and information literacy skills, it is possible that these abilities will be harnessed as cultural tools in the grassroots battles to maintain local and national identities.
