Demise Of The Reference Desk: Tradition And Transformation, Ann Ellis, Tina Oswald Nov 2005

Demise Of The Reference Desk: Tradition And Transformation, Ann Ellis, Tina Oswald

Librarian and Staff Presentations

This presentation discusses changes and outcomes that took place when the Stephen F. Austin State University Library reorganized its Research and Instructional Services Department. The library removed its Reference Desk, and offered research services through office hours, a faculty liaison program, consultations, and an enhanced information literacy focus. The library continued to operate an Information Desk that had a limited scope of responsibility. The presentation outlines the problems encountered, and considered that changes would continue to be made based upon user surveys and satisfaction of staff.

Model Evaluation Based On The Distribution Of Estimated Absolute Prediction Error, Lu Tian, Tianxi Cai, Els Goetghebeur, L. J. Wei Nov 2005

Model Evaluation Based On The Distribution Of Estimated Absolute Prediction Error, Lu Tian, Tianxi Cai, Els Goetghebeur, L. J. Wei

Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The construction of a reliable, practically useful prediction rule for future response is heavily dependent on the "adequacy" of the fitted regression model. In this article, we consider the absolute prediction error, the expected value of the absolute difference between the future and predicted responses, as the model evaluation criterion. This prediction error is easier to interpret than the average squared error and is equivalent to the mis-classification error for the binary outcome. We show that the distributions of the apparent error and its cross-validation counterparts are approximately normal even under a misspecified fitted model. When the prediction rule is …

Jesus Is Enough: Love, Hope, And Comfort In The Storms Of Life, Claudia May Nov 2005

Jesus Is Enough: Love, Hope, And Comfort In The Storms Of Life, Claudia May

Faculty Books

When stormy trials hit us, our recollection of Jesus' faithfulness can fade as worry, anger, jealousy, fear, sickness, stress, and unforgiveness threaten to rob us of the love and hope that can be found in Jesus. And yet we can experience comfort in the womb of these stormy seasons. Pondering on the stories surrounding Jesus' life presents us with practical wisdom on how to respond to the turbulent episodes we encounter. Jesus' teachings can rejuvenate and instill within us a sense of hope in his love. If we allow him, Jesus can be enough for us, in and out of …

An Automated Three-Dimensional Unstructured Mesh Generation Algorithm For Groundwater Modeling, James Edward Greer Nov 2005

An Automated Three-Dimensional Unstructured Mesh Generation Algorithm For Groundwater Modeling, James Edward Greer

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes a new method to create three-dimensional finite element meshes using the horizons to mesh algorithm. The algorithm uses available geologic data and user-defined inputs to guide the mesh generation process. This new approach allows for material layer pinch outs and many different layer refinement options to create well-formed elements that better represent hydrogeologic formations. Two case studies are presented that demonstrate the application of the algorithm's options and capabilities. A graphical interface for the algorithm was developed in the Groundwater Modeling System.

Practical Behavioral Modeling Technique Of Power Amplifiers Based On Loadpull Measurements, Jiang Liu Nov 2005

Practical Behavioral Modeling Technique Of Power Amplifiers Based On Loadpull Measurements, Jiang Liu

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Accurate linear and nonlinear models for devices and components are essential for successful RF/microwave computer aided engineering (CAE). The modeling techniques can be categorized in different levels based on the abstraction of the model as well as the application of the models at various design phases. This dissertation deals with behavioral modeling techniques for nonlinear RF components, especially amplifiers.

There is an increasing demand for accurate behavioral models of RF and microwave components, or integrated circuit (IC) blocks used in wireless system designs. Accurate behavioral models help designers evaluate and select the appropriate components at simulation phase, thereby cutting development …
