Trehalose Loading Through The Mitochondrial Permeability Transition Pore Enhances Desiccation Tolerance In Rat Liver Mitochondria, Xiang Hong Liu, Alptekin Aksan, Michael A. Menze, Steven C. Hand, Mehmet Toner

Faculty Publications

Trehalose has extensively been used to improve the desiccation tolerance of mammalian cells. To test whether trehalose improves desiccation tolerance of mammalian mitochondria, we introduced trehalose into the matrix of isolated rat liver mitochondria by reversibly permeabilizing the inner membrane using the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP). Measurement of the trehalose concentration inside mitochondria using high performance liquid chromatography showed that the sugar permeated rapidly into the matrix upon opening the MPTP. The concentration of intra-matrix trehalose reached 0.29 mmol/mg protein (∼190 mM) in 5 min. Mitochondria, with and without trehalose loaded into the matrix, were desiccated in a buffer …

Presentations

Responses to thirteen questions regarding curriculum related to staff sexual misconduct with youth and youth on youth sexual assault are provided. "The objectives of the focus groups included: (1) to gather data that will inform NIC [National Institute of Corrections] in how to best develop a juvenile oriented curriculum on staff sexual misconduct; (2) to gather data that will guide NIC in identifying the major staff sexual misconduct related issues in juvenile corrections, including what stakeholders should be consulted, and what strategies should be utilized in naming the issues and building knowledge about the PREA [Prison Rape Elimination Act]; and …

Nonlinear All-Optical Gan/Algan Multi-Quantum-Well Devices For 100 Gb/S Applications At Λ = 1.55 Μm, Greg Sun, Jacob B. Khurgin, Richard A. Soref

Physics Faculty Publications

Using quantum-mechanical analysis, a strain-balanced stack of coupled GaN/AlGaNquantum wells has been engineered for bandwidth-optimized all-optical switching at low switching powers. Intersubband transitions between three conduction subbands provide the basis for the large, fast, nonlinear optical response. Optimized performance for a given symbol rate is obtained by engineering the response time and nonlinear phase shift.

Pemex To Bring Competition To Cen, Noticen Writers

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

Central America stands to become the beneficiary of an oil-fueled imbroglio between Mexico's President Vicente Fox and President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela. Both are seeking, for reasons economic, philosophical, and political, to ease the strain on non-oil-blessed countries. The two presidents represented opposing sides regarding free trade at the IV Summit of the Americas in Mar del Plata, Argentina, but it was Fox who, on Nov. 5, signed an accord worth US$7 billion with the Central Americans to ease their energy woes. "With this we will have abundant energy in the region, competitive and made into a platform for development," …
