Massive Black Hole Binary Evolution, David Merritt, Milos Milosavljevic Nov 2005

Massive Black Hole Binary Evolution, David Merritt, Milos Milosavljevic

Articles

Coalescence of binary supermassive black holes (SBHs) would constitute the strongest sources of gravitational waves to be observed by LISA. While the formation of binary SBHs during galaxy mergers is almost inevitable, coalescence requires that the separation between binary components first drop by a few orders of magnitude, due presumably to interaction of the binary with stars and gas in a galactic nucleus. This article reviews the observational evidence for binary SBHs and discusses how they would evolve. No completely convincing case of a bound, binary SBH has yet been found, although a handful of systems (e.g. interacting galaxies; remnants …

Hacks, Cracks, And Crime: An Examination Of The Subculture And Social Organization Of Computer Hackers, Thomas Jeffrey Holt Nov 2005

Hacks, Cracks, And Crime: An Examination Of The Subculture And Social Organization Of Computer Hackers, Thomas Jeffrey Holt

Dissertations

This dissertation examines both the subculture and social organization practices of computer hackers. The concept of normative orders (Herbert, 1998: 347) is used to explore hacker subculture in different contexts. To assess hacker social organization, I use Best and Luckenbill¿s (1994) framework of organizational sophistication as well as measures from Decker et al. (1998). The relationships between subculture, social organization, and behavior are explored as well. I collected three qualitative data sets to explore these issues, including posts from six on-line hacker discussion forums, in-depth interviews with active hackers, and field observations at the Defcon 12 hacker convention. These data …

A Study Of Head Coaches' Attitudes Regarding Academic Support Services For Student Athletes In The New Jersey Athletic Conference, Kenneth M. Dickson Nov 2005

A Study Of Head Coaches' Attitudes Regarding Academic Support Services For Student Athletes In The New Jersey Athletic Conference, Kenneth M. Dickson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of head coaches in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) regarding the academic support services provided to student athletes. Of related interest was whether the coaches found a need for these services to be provided by the athletic department. Seventy-five head coaches in the NJAC completed the survey to evaluate the attitudes and academic support services. Results showed a statistically significant relationship between years in coaching and attitudes of academic support services. The findings suggested that the head coaches in the NJAC believe that there is a need for academic …

Generating Data-Extraction Ontologies By Example, Yuanqiu Zhou Nov 2005

Generating Data-Extraction Ontologies By Example, Yuanqiu Zhou

Theses and Dissertations

Ontology-based data-extraction is a resilient web data-extraction approach. A major limitation of this approach is that ontology experts must manually develop and maintain data-extraction ontologies. The limitation prevents ordinary users who have little knowledge of conceptual models from making use of this resilient approach. In this thesis we have designed and implemented a general framework, OntoByE, to generate data-extraction ontologies semi-automatically through a small set of examples collected by users. With the assistance of a limited amount of prior knowledge, experimental evidence shows that OntoByE is capable of interacting with users to generate data-extraction ontologies for domains of interest to …

The Internet As An Anchor: A Comparative Analysis Model Of Internet Advocacy And Web Site Production In Japan And The Issue Of History Textbook Reform, Daniel Mark Dowdle Nov 2005

The Internet As An Anchor: A Comparative Analysis Model Of Internet Advocacy And Web Site Production In Japan And The Issue Of History Textbook Reform, Daniel Mark Dowdle

Theses and Dissertations

This master's thesis is a grounded theory study of the development of the Internet as a tool for political action in Japan by groups and individuals producing web pages on the issue of history textbook reform. Through the analysis of 14 in-depth interviews, a framework is developed for understanding the role the Internet has taken in political action in Japan. As activists utilize the Internet in political activism, the Internet appears to be developing into an anchor for continuing political activism. For activists, the Internet is a central point of reference for both mass communication and interpersonal communication activities. The …

Second Oh Overtone Excitation And Statistical Dissociation Dynamics Of Peroxynitrous Acid, I. M. Konen, E. X.J. Li, Thomas Alex Stephenson, M. I. Lester

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

The second OH overtone transition of the trans-perp conformer of peroxynitrous acid (tp-HOONO) is identified using infrared action spectroscopy. HOONO is produced by the recombination of photolytically generated OH and NO(2) radicals, and then cooled in a pulsed supersonic expansion. The second overtone transition is assigned to tp-HOONO based on its vibrational frequency (10 195.3 cm(-1)) and rotational band contour, which are in accord with theoretical predictions and previous observations of the first overtone transition. The transition dipole moment associated with the overtone transition is rotated considerably from the OH bond axis, as evident from its hybrid band composition, indicating …

Association Of The 17-Kda Extrinsic Protein With Photosystem Ii In Higher Plants, Glen D. Meades, Anne Mclachlan, Larry Sallans, Patrick A. Limbach, Laurie K. Frankel, Terry M. Bricker

Faculty Publications

The structural association of the spinach 17-kDa extrinsic protein of photosystem II with other extrinsic and membrane-bound components of the photosystem was investigated by labeling the 17-kDa extrinsic protein with the amino-group-specific reagent N-hydroxysuccinimidobiotin both on intact photosystem II membranes or as a free protein in solution. After isolation of the biotinylated molecules, the modified 17-kDa proteins were allowed to rebind to photosystem II membranes which were depleted of the 17-kDa component. Differential binding of the protein biotinylated in solution compared to unmodified 17-kDa protein or 17-kDa protein modified on PSII membranes was observed. This indicated possible steric or ionic …

Mammalian Micrornas: A Small World For Fine-Tuning Gene Expression, Cinzia Sevignani, George A. Calin, Linda D. Siracusa, Carlo M. Croce

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

The basis of eukaryotic complexity is an intricate genetic architecture where parallel systems are involved in tuning gene expression, via RNA-DNA, RNA-RNA and RNA-protein and DNA-protein interactions. In higher organisms, about 97% of the transcriptional output is represented by non-coding RNA (ncRNA) encompassing not only rRNA, tRNA, introns, 5’ and 3’-untranslated regions, transposable elements and intergenic regions, but also a large rapidly emerging family, named microRNAs. MicroRNAs are short 20-22 nucleotide RNA molecules that have been shown to regulate the expression of other genes in a variety of eukaryotic systems. MicroRNAs are formed from larger transcripts that fold to produce …

Group Scheduling In Selinux To Mitigate Cpu-Focused Denial Of Service Attacks, Armando Migliaccio, Terry Tidwell, Christopher Gill, Tejasvi Aswathanarayana, Douglas Niehaus

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Popular security techniques such as public-private key encryption, firewalls, and role-based access control offer significant protec-tion of system data, but offer only limited protection of the computations using that data from significant interference due to accident or adversarial attack. However, in an increasing number of modern systems, ensuring the reliable execution of system activities is every bit as important as ensuring data security. This paper makes three contributions to the state of the art in protection of the execution of system activities from accidental or adversarial interference. First, we consider the motivating problem of CPU-focused denial of service attacks, and …

Method and apparatus for forming thin silicon oxide films on silicon carbide substrates utilizing an afterglow thermal reactor. The method of forming thin silicon oxide film includes the steps of loading a silicon carbide substrate within a tube, which tube is heated, and the contents pressure is controlled. An oxidizing gas is then passed through an afterglow reactor source or microwave cavity where the gas achieves an excited state of energy. When the neutral species of the excited gas contact the silicon carbide substrate within the heated region of the the tube, a thin silicon oxide film forms on the …

Visibility, Visual Awareness, And Visual Masking Of Simple Unattended Targets Are Confined To Areas In The Occipital Cortex Beyond Human V1/V2, Peter U. Tse, Susanna Martinez-Conde, Alexander A. Schlegel, Stephen L. Macknik Nov 2005

Visibility, Visual Awareness, And Visual Masking Of Simple Unattended Targets Are Confined To Areas In The Occipital Cortex Beyond Human V1/V2, Peter U. Tse, Susanna Martinez-Conde, Alexander A. Schlegel, Stephen L. Macknik

Dartmouth Scholarship

In visual masking, visible targets are rendered invisible by modifying the context in which they are presented, but not by modifying the targets themselves. Here, we localize the neuronal correlates of visual awareness in the human brain by using visual masking illusions. We compare monoptic visual masking activation, which we find within all retinotopic visual areas, with dichoptic masking activation, which we find only in those retinotopic areas downstream of V2. Because monoptic and dichoptic masking are equivalent in magnitude perceptually, the present results establish a lower bound for maintenance of visual awareness of simple unattended targets. Moreover, we find …
