An Investigation Of Employee Satisfaction And Employee Empowerment Specific To On-Site Supervisors In The Residential Construction Industry, David Lars Halvorsen
An Investigation Of Employee Satisfaction And Employee Empowerment Specific To On-Site Supervisors In The Residential Construction Industry, David Lars Halvorsen
Theses and Dissertations
Employee satisfaction and empowerment are vital elements to businesses in most industries. The construction industry has various types of employees, ranging from managers and executives to on-site supervisors and laborers. This study was conducted to obtain a greater understanding about the elements and levels of satisfaction and empowerment of on-site supervisors in the residential construction industry. An on-site supervisor in the residential construction industry is responsible for coordinating and managing employees, materials, equipment, budgets, schedules, contracts, and the safety of employees and the general public. They are also the employees most frequently perceived as accountable for the success or failure …

Retrospective Review Of The Use Of Swan Ganz Catheters In Our Intensive Care Unit (Icu): A Short Report, Shahla Siddiqui
Department of Anaesthesia
The widespread and often 'misuse' of the Swan Ganz (SG) or Pulmonary artery catheter has often been seen in intensive care patients. The objective of this preliminary review was to observe the trends and possibly formulate an association with outcome of the use of SG catheters as well as to determine the frequency of use and possible complications. The chart review of ten patients was carried out for the months of January and February 2004 in a retrospective manner. The incidence of SG catheter insertion was 12% per month on average. Nine out of 10 patients received the SG catheters …
Review Of Unity Of Knowledge And Action: Toward A Nonrepresentational Theory Of Knowledge, Sor-Hoon Tan
Review Of Unity Of Knowledge And Action: Toward A Nonrepresentational Theory Of Knowledge, Sor-Hoon Tan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The title of this book is inspired by the Neo-Confucian scholar, Wang Yangming (1472-1529). However, the volume is not devoted solely to Wang Yangming's philosophy about the unity of knowledge and action. Wang is only one of several thinkers brought into this philosophical conversation and does not even receive the most attention (Richard Rorty has that honor). The conver- sation is interesting and occasionally illuminating, although one is not sure at the end whether it is moving toward one particular nonrepresentation theory of knowledge or whether the conversation partners who share an aversion to representational theories might disagree profoundly about …

Effectiveness Of The "Common" Method In Balancing Exhaust Ventilation Systems, Vivek Balasubramanian
Effectiveness Of The "Common" Method In Balancing Exhaust Ventilation Systems, Vivek Balasubramanian
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Dampers are used to adjust the distribution of airflows in duct systems. The "common"(i.e., most commonly used) method is to adjust each damper in turn so that the airflow through its branch equals the desired level. Typically, the airflow through each branch duct is estimated from the centerline velocity pressure. To test the effectiveness of that approach, dampers were adjusted on a seven branch, full-sized experimental duct system. After adjusting the dampers for a given condition, the percent excess airflow (%Qexcess) for the system was estimated as the amount above the ideal fan airflow that would exist if the fan …

Carbon Fuels For The Direct Carbon Fuel Cell, Abha Saddawi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research focuses on using the U.S.' abundant coal reserves to create carbon fuels for the production of energy in a very efficient and environmentally friendly manner via the use of a Direct Carbon Fuel Cell (DCFC). This cell utilizes a process by which carbon is electrochemically converted directly to electricity, allowing theoretical cell efficiency to approach 80%. Using carbon made from the solvent extraction of coal eliminates most of the volatiles, ash, and sulfur from the fuel while most of the remaining NOX, sulfur, and fly-ash byproducts are captured by the cell itself. The aim of this project is …

Royal Diplomacy In Renaissance Italy: Ferrante D’Aragona (1458–1494) And His Ambassadors, Paul M. Dover
Faculty Articles
This article examines the diplomatic challenges faced by the king of Naples, Ferrante d'Aragona (1458-1494) and the activity of his ambassadors in meeting those challenges. It identifies Rome, Florence and Milan as the three most important nodes of Ferrante's diplomacy and looks in detail at the activity of the ambassadors who served in these postings. In the area of diplomatic praxis, Ferrante enthusiastically embraced changes pioneered by Francesco Sforza, the Duke of Milan (1450-1466), including the use of permanent resident ambassadors and diplomatic chanceries. This was very much in keeping with Ferrante's pragmatic approach to statecraft and counters the widely …
Correlogram Method For Comparing Bio-Sequences, Gandhali P. Samant
Correlogram Method For Comparing Bio-Sequences, Gandhali P. Samant
Theses and Dissertations
Sequence comparison is one of the most primitive operations used in bio-informatics. It is used as a basis for many other complex manipulations in the field of Computational Molecular Biology. Many methods and algorithms were developed to compare and align sequences effectively. Most of these methods use linear comparison and some standard scoring schemes to calculate the similarity between sequences. We described an alternative approach to compare sequences based on the correlogram method. This method has already been used in the past for comparing images. By using the correlogram method, a sequence is projected on a 3-D space and the …

The Usa Patriot Act And Civil Liberties: The Media's Response, M. Ann Bergstrom
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the wake of terrorist attacks in New York and Washington on September 11, 2001, the United States government hurriedly passed the USA PATRIOT Act. This legislation gives the Executive Branch sweeping new powers that could undermine the Bill of Rights and violate civil liberties in the name of national security. The media itself is protected by the First Amendment right to a free press and relies on other civil rights as well. This study is an attempt to gauge the print media's response to the Act by examining newspaper editorials about the PATRIOT Act since 2001 and determining their …
Smoke And Mirrors: Internalizing The Magic Lantern Show In Villette, Diane Hoeveler
Smoke And Mirrors: Internalizing The Magic Lantern Show In Villette, Diane Hoeveler
English Faculty Research and Publications
With considerable historical background in mind, I would like to examine a number of the stock gothic tropes, including the mysterious nun, the paintings of women, the theater scene, and the fête in Villette as examples of not simply one of last gasps of high Victorian gothicism, but also of the internalization and critique of gothic theatrical technology. As Castle observes, the "phantasmagoria should [have] become a kind of master trope in nineteenth-century romantic writing," and certainly she applies the representation in provocative ways to the symbols and imagery in Thomas Carlyle's French Revolution. In a similar fashion, I …
Non-Ideal Iris Recognition, Vivekanand Dorairaj
Non-Ideal Iris Recognition, Vivekanand Dorairaj
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Of the many biometrics that exist, iris recognition is finding more attention than any other due to its potential for improved accuracy, permanence, and acceptance. Current iris recognition systems operate on frontal view images of good quality. Due to the small area of the iris, user co-operation is required. In this work, a new system capable of processing iris images which are not necessarily in frontal view is described. This overcomes one of the major hurdles with current iris recognition systems and enhances user convenience and accuracy. The proposed system is designed to operate in two steps: (i) preprocessing and …

Thirty three out of 116 sites with SMZs were further evaluated for BMP applications …
Modeling And Control Of A Small Glass Furnace, Andrea R. Holladay
Modeling And Control Of A Small Glass Furnace, Andrea R. Holladay
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Most control systems currently used for glass furnaces monitor temperature with a thermocouple placed in the crown of the furnace and adjust the flow rate of the fuel to maintain a set point. The temperature measured is much closer to that of the combustion gasses within the furnace rather than the temperature of the glass. Models that predict the temperature of the glass are available in the form of complicated Computational Fluid Dynamics packages that are cost prohibitive to companies with small profit margins.;In this work, a simplified mathematical model has been developed to represent the dynamic performance of a …

The objective of this research is to develop a turn-key system that is able to interface with the FLIR ThermaCAM S60 infrared camera and automatically capture and analyze defects in infrared images of FRP bridge decks. Infrared thermography is one of the nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques that are being used to locate defects (debonds and delaminations) in bridge components. It is a rapid data collection and interpretation technique having high sensitivity and reliability. Analysis of infrared images by human interpretation is dependent on the users knowledge and hence introduces ambiguity in the defect detection process.;This thesis investigates the use of …
Error And Attack Tolerance Of Complex Real Networks, Vamsi Salla
Error And Attack Tolerance Of Complex Real Networks, Vamsi Salla
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Real networks are often subjected to failures and attacks. Real networks are found to be robust to errors and vulnerable to attacks. This behavior of real networks is attributed to their non-homogeneous degree distribution. Non-homogenous networks are also known as scale free networks. Real networks along with the scale free property show high modularity.;Many network models have been proposed to model real networks. Erdos-Renyi Random network model is the first attempt, but fails to incorporate both properties - scale free as well as the high modularity of the real networks. Small world model shows high clustering but lacks non-homogeneous distribution. …
Prosody In Text-To-Speech Synthesis Using Fuzzy Logic, Jonathan Brent Williams
Prosody In Text-To-Speech Synthesis Using Fuzzy Logic, Jonathan Brent Williams
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
For over a thousand years, inventors, scientists and researchers have tried to reproduce human speech. Today, the quality of synthesized speech is not equivalent to the quality of real speech. Most research on speech synthesis focuses on improving the quality of the speech produced by Text-to-Speech (TTS) systems. The best TTS systems use unit selection-based concatenation to synthesize speech. However, this method is very timely and the speech database is very large. Diphone concatenated synthesized speech requires less memory, but sounds robotic. This thesis explores the use of fuzzy logic to make diphone concatenated speech sound more natural. A TTS …

A Form Of Two-Phase Sampling Utilizing Regression Analysis, Michael Allen Fiery Jr.
A Form Of Two-Phase Sampling Utilizing Regression Analysis, Michael Allen Fiery Jr.
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A two-phase sampling technique was introduced and tested where sawlog heights were measured on intensive (second phase) points and predicted on non-intensive (first phase) points. Regression analysis is used to predict heights on first phase points in order to achieve an estimate of volume for every point. Results indicate an improved estimate of both mean volume per acre and volume per acre by species when compared to traditional double sampling. An unbiased sampling error was also achieved in this process. Datasets consisted of mostly hardwood species from West Virginia and Maryland.
A Detailed Sequential Extraction Study Of Selenium In Coal And Coal-Associated Strata From A Coal Mine In West Virginia, Mimi Roy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study of the mode of occurrence and distribution of selenium in a rock core from southcentral West Virginia reveals that total selenium concentration varies by rock type. Rocks with total selenium >1 mg/kg were of circum-neutral pH based on acid base accounting data. No direct correlation was found between selenium concentration in the rocks and that of sulfur and/or total organic carbon. The distribution of total selenium was also controlled by stratigraphy. The amount of total selenium extracted from various rock types like coal, shale, sandstone, mudstone and "carbolith" materials ranged from 50%. Selenium extracted from coal was mostly …
Isolation And Preparation Of Naturally Occurring Aluminum Ligands Using Immobilized Metal Affinity Chromatography For Analysis By Electrospray Ionization-Mass Spectrometry, Carson Baldwin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Typically, Al3+ is bound to minerals, but its toxicity towards vascular plants increases with increasing soil acidity. Ectomycorrhizal fungi often confer Al3+ resistance to host plants by unknown mechanisms. The objective of this research was to develop a method for the successful separation of Al3+ binding fungal exudates produced by the fungus Pisolithus tinctorius. A novel Al3+ immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC) technique was developed to extract exudates involved in Al3+ binding. Recovery of exudates from the IMAC column was dependent on elutor type and pH, with ammonium hydroxide being most effective. Exudates exhibited strong binding with Al3+, allowing their …
Combinatory Effects Of The Bioflavonoid Apigenin With Chemotherapeutic Drugs On Prostate, Colon, And Lung Cancer Cell Lines, Lesly Anne J. Lopez
Combinatory Effects Of The Bioflavonoid Apigenin With Chemotherapeutic Drugs On Prostate, Colon, And Lung Cancer Cell Lines, Lesly Anne J. Lopez
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Lung, prostate, and colon cancer are among the most commonly diagnosed cancers in Americans. Current chemotherapeutic regimens generally have toxic side effects leading to the death of normal cells. Polyphenols are naturally occurring compounds that can be found in fruits, vegetables and herbs. Apigenin is a polyphenolic compound that has been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, apigenin was shown to inhibit the proliferation of several cancer cell lines. The combination of 15 uM apigenin and the chemotherapeutic drugs including doxorubicin, etoposide, mitomycin C, and 5-fluorouracil significantly decreased (P<0.05) the IC50 to inhibit the proliferation of prostate cancer cell lines PC-3 and DU-145 more than the chemotherapeutic drugs alone. Similarly, the addition of apigenin greatly enhanced the sensitivity of colon cancer cell lines HCT-116 and colo-205 and lung cancer lines A549 and H460 to doxorubicin, mitomycin C, 5-fluorouracil, and cisplatin. We analyzed sensitivity via cell death and cell proliferation assays.
Towards Large Eddy Simulation Of Dispersed Gas -Liquid Two-Phase Turbulent Flows, Gusheng Hu
Towards Large Eddy Simulation Of Dispersed Gas -Liquid Two-Phase Turbulent Flows, Gusheng Hu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study presents a detailed investigation of all essential components of computational and modeling issues necessary for a successful large-eddy simulation (LES) of dispersed two-phase turbulent flows. In particular, a two-layer concept is proposed to enable the LES capability in two-phase flows involving dispersed bubbles that are relatively large compared to the mesh size. The work comprises three major parts.;Part I focuses on the development and verification of a transient, three-dimensional, finite-volume-method (FVM) based accurate Navier-Stokes solver, named DREAM II (second generation of the DREAM code). Several high-order schemes are implemented for both the spatial and temporal discretization. Solution of …
State Punishment And Private Prisons, Sharon Dolovich
State Punishment And Private Prisons, Sharon Dolovich
Duke Law Journal
To date, the debate over private prisons has focused largely on the relative efficiency of private prisons as compared to their publicly-run counterparts, and has assumed that, if private contractors can run the prisons for less money than the state without a drop in quality, then states should be willing to privatize. This "comparative efficiency" approach, however, has two significant problems. First, it is concerned exclusively with efficiency, despite the fact that the privatization of prisons arguably implicates more urgent values. Second, it accepts the current state of public prisons as an unproblematic baseline, thus failing to consider the possibility …
