Joseph Smith's Many Histories, Richard L. Bushman Dec 2005

Joseph Smith's Many Histories, Richard L. Bushman

BYU Studies

In 1992 my wife, Claudia, published a book titled America Discovers Columbus: How an Italian Explorer Became an American Hero. The book argued that until the American Revolution, Columbus was almost completely neglected in histories of the British colonies. Not until three centuries after the fact did North Americans honor him as the discoverer of America. Even in 1792, it required a stretch of the imagination to give him the credit, since he never touched foot on the North American continent and for centuries the British had distanced themselves from the hated Spanish exploiters of the New World. But …

Part 3: Joseph Smith In A Personal World, Byu Studies

BYU Studies

Joseph Smith cared intensely about the personal world. He related to individuals. He championed the exercise of individual conscience. He promoted personal revelation. For this part, the presenter was asked to provide insights into Joseph Smith the man, who became devoutly revered by his followers as the Prophet Joseph Smith. What can be known of his background, his personality, his challenges, his opposition, and his charisma? What has drawn people to him? This presentation opens several windows into the mind and heart of a complex human being who responded to a call from God to undertake a divine work.

Biographical Reflections On The American Joseph Smith, Robert V. Remini Dec 2005

Biographical Reflections On The American Joseph Smith, Robert V. Remini

BYU Studies

I have long thought that the importance and role of Joseph Smith in the history of religion in America has been muted more than necessary by the Latter-day Saint church. As his biographer, I was and remain very anxious that his contribution to American culture and religion in general be recognized and appreciated, both by Mormons and by non-Mormons.

Archeological Trends And Book Of Mormon Origins, John E. Clark Dec 2005

Archeological Trends And Book Of Mormon Origins, John E. Clark

BYU Studies

Had circumstances permitted a marked grave for the slain prophet, a fitting headstone could have read, “By Joseph Smith, Junior, Author and Proprietor.” Such an epitaph, taken from the title page of the Book of Mormon, captures the enduring bond between the man and the book, and also the controversy which coalesced around both with the book’s publication and the organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1830. In the ensuing and continuing “war of words” (Joseph Smith–History 1:10) and prejudice, redemption may hang on the single preposition “by.” What hand did Joseph have in producing …

Joseph Smith's Christology: After Two Hundred Years, Robert L. Millet Dec 2005

Joseph Smith's Christology: After Two Hundred Years, Robert L. Millet

BYU Studies

During the last decade, a recurring question has been posed to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: Is the church “changing?” In addition, it is asked, Is there some effort on the part of church leadership to have the church and its teachings, particularly those concerning Jesus Christ, become more acceptable to and thus more accepted by other Christians? The natural Latter-day Saint inclination is to react sharply that the church’s doctrines concerning Jesus Christ are intact and even eternal, that the doctrines of Joseph Smith’s day and the doctrines of our own day are one …

Testing Stark's Thesis: Is Mormonism The First New World Religion Since Islam?, Gerald R. Mcdermott

BYU Studies

I n 1984, Rodney Stark startled the academic world with a claim that has kept sociologists and religion-watchers scratching their heads ever since. “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Mormons,” he predicted, “will soon achieve a worldwide following comparable to that of Islam, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, and the other dominant world faiths.”¹ Stark claimed that Mormonism has grown faster than any other new religion in American history. Between 1840 and 1980, it had averaged a growth rate of 44 percent per decade; in the four decades 1940 through 1980, growth zoomed to an astonishing 53 percent. If …

Joseph Smith And The Making Of A Global Religion, Jan Shipps Dec 2005

Joseph Smith And The Making Of A Global Religion, Jan Shipps

BYU Studies

In regard to the other “worlds” of the first Mormon prophet, Joseph Smith was certainly “in that world and of it.” He was clearly in attendance “in his own time;” he attempted to recover past worlds; he was and is present in his own and in the personal worlds of others; and he challenged the theological world of his day.

Can A Community Of Practice Be Established At Org X?, Kasturi Golla Dec 2005

Can A Community Of Practice Be Established At Org X?, Kasturi Golla

Student Work

Communities of Practice (CoP's) can preserve the knowledge of an organization by pooling together individuals who share the same goals and are determined to build their level of knowledge through 'innovative interaction'(Wenger, 1998). CoP's help organizations pool together their knowledge of value, keeping in mind the organization's business processes. This study was conducted in order to establish a CoP in the I/S department at Org X, by first identifying knowledge sharing barriers and the measures that could be taken to eliminate these barriers. This research is aimed at answering three primary questions: 1. What are the barriers that prevent employees …

The Effect Of A Dialogic Reading Intervention On The Emergent Literacy Skills Of Preschool Students, Alicia M. Domack Dec 2005

The Effect Of A Dialogic Reading Intervention On The Emergent Literacy Skills Of Preschool Students, Alicia M. Domack

Student Work

Seventeen children enrolled in a preschool for four-year-old children were separated into a dialogue reading intervention group and a control group. Dialogic reading involves making children active participants in the adult-child storybook reading process. Adults prompt children to talk about the book by asking questions. The intervention group received dialogic reading in small groups for six weeks. It was found that there was no significant improvement in emergent literacy skill in the intervention group as measured by the Developing Skills Checklist, but the children in the intervention group were actively engaged in the reading process a larger percentage of the …

Perceptions Of Selected Public And Non-Public School Parents About School In Two North Dakota Cities, Thaines Arulandu

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of public and non-public school parents about school choice in two North Dakota cities. Data were gathered through a survey questionnaire administered to randomly selected public and non-public school parents in Fargo and Grand Forks, North Dakota. Factor analysis reduced the perceptions of parents to four independent variables, income, education, ethnicity, and employment of parents. Perceptions of parents were studied on 16 issues related to school choice as dependent variables. The data analysis answered the following research questions: What are the perceptions of public and non-public school parents about school …

Utilization Of Income Tax Credits By Low-Income Individuals, Stacy Dickert-Conlin, Katie Fitzpatrick, Andrew R. Hanson Dec 2005

Utilization Of Income Tax Credits By Low-Income Individuals, Stacy Dickert-Conlin, Katie Fitzpatrick, Andrew R. Hanson

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

The Internal Revenue Service-a sub-agency that exists to collect revenue-has the task of administering and enforcing a wide array of social policy: from subsidies for college and child care expenses, to creating jobs in depressed areas, and assisting welfare recipients with employment. While these new or expanded credits represent a new paradigm in the delivery of social policy, little is known about who uses these programs and, equally important, who does not use these programs. Understanding utilization is a key to understanding how effective this means of transferring income is and whether we are reaching the targeted populations. This paper …

International Technology Diffusion: Effects Of Trade And Fdi, Alejandro Ciruelos, Miao Wang Dec 2005

International Technology Diffusion: Effects Of Trade And Fdi, Alejandro Ciruelos, Miao Wang

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

There has been little analysis of the effect of inward FDI on international R&D diffusion, especially in LDCs, although FDI has become the core of international production and LDCs have been receiving an increasing share of world FDI over the past few decades. Using data from 57 countries from 1988 to 2001, we find that both FDI and trade serve as important channels of international technology diffusion. However, there exist heterogeneous effects of FDI in DCs and LDCs. For inward FDI to promote technology diffusion in LDCs, a certain threshold of human capital has to be reached.
