Educational Development Projects At Ied: Towards School Improvement, Khalid Mahmood, Nilofar Vazir
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
The M.Ed. program at The Aga Khan University-Institute for Educational Development helps to develop Course Participants (CPs) as teacher educators / educational leaders. The institute always welcomes innovations in its various programmes. The Educational Development Project (EDP) was conceived as an alternative to research to develop CPS’ knowledge and skills required for developmental work. The EDP is concerned with capacity building at classroom and school level depending on the needs of the relevant stakeholders. A contextually relevant model was adapted for EDP at the institute. The research reported in this paper discussed the question: To what extent does the course …

Rehab Exercise Prescription Sequencing For Shoulder External Rotators, Jason Brumitt, Erik Meira
Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy
Overhead athletes are susceptible to shoulder injuries. One component of a complete rehabilitation program is a systematic exercise prescription for the shoulder's external rotators. An overhead athlete should be progressed from basic rehab exercise positions to dynamic, sport-specific positions prior to returning to sport.
Participation, Identity, And Social Support In A Spiritual Community, Ladorna Mcgee
Participation, Identity, And Social Support In A Spiritual Community, Ladorna Mcgee
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
Paganism is a loosely organized community whose religious ideology incorporates the immanence of Deity. As a religious association with an ideology different from traditional Judeo-Christian faiths, members are often labeled as deviant and subjected to various negative sanctions. By relying on survey data collected on April 9-12, 1996 and in depth personal interviews collected on October 10-13, 1996, this study presents a model that best describes and explains acceptance and participation in pagan spiritualism. This study identifies three characteristics associated with positive ratings of childhood religious affiliation (church disaffection, family closeness, and role), three characteristics associated with feelings of belonging …

Crawdad: A Community Resource For Archiving Wireless Data At Dartmouth, David Kotz, Tristan Henderson
Dartmouth Scholarship
Wireless network researchers are seriously starved for data about how real users, applications, and devices use real networks under real network conditions. CRAWDAD (Community Resource for Archiving Wireless Data at Dartmouth) is a new National Science Foundation-funded project to build a wireless-network data archive for the research community. It will host wireless data and provide tools and documents to make collecting and using the data easy. This resource should help researchers identify and evaluate real and interesting problems in mobile and pervasive computing. To learn more about CRAWDAD and discuss its direction, about 30 interested people gathered at a workshop …

The U.S. Supreme Court, in Furman v. Georgia (1972), held that the death penalty is constitutional only when applied on an individualized basis. The resultant changes in the laws in death penalty states fostered the involvement of psychiatric and psychologic expert witnesses at the sentencing phase of the trial, to testify on two major issues: (1) the mitigating factor of a defendant’s abnormal mental state and (2) the aggravating factor of a defendant’s potential for future violence. This study was an exploration of the responses of capital jurors to psychiatric/psychologic expert testimony during capital sentencing. The Capital Jury Project is …

Politics As Usual: Franklin Roosevelt, Thomas Dewey And The Wartime Presidential Campaign Of 1944, Michael A. Davis
Politics As Usual: Franklin Roosevelt, Thomas Dewey And The Wartime Presidential Campaign Of 1944, Michael A. Davis
Faculty Dissertations
This dissertation examines the U.S. wartime presidential campaign of 1944. In 1944, the United States was at war with the Axis Powers of World War II, and Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt, already serving an unprecedented third term as President of the United States, was seeking a fourth. Roosevelt was a very able politician and-combined with his successful performance as wartime commander-in-chief-- waged an effective, and ultimately successful, reelection campaign. Republicans, meanwhile, rallied behind New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey. Dewey emerged as leader of the GOP at a critical time. Since the coming of the Great Depression -for which Republicans …
Neutrosophic Methods In General Relativity, Florentin Smarandache, Dmitri Rabounski, Larissa Borissova
Neutrosophic Methods In General Relativity, Florentin Smarandache, Dmitri Rabounski, Larissa Borissova
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
In this work the authors apply concepts of Neutrosophic Logic to the General Theory of Relativity to obtain a generalisation of Einstein’s fourdimensional pseudo-Riemannian differentiable manifold in terms of Smarandache Geometry (Smarandache manifolds), by which new classes of relativistic particles and non-quantum teleportation are developed. Fundamental features of Neutrosophic Logic are its denial of the Law of Excluded Middle, and open (or estimated) levels of truth, falsity and indeterminancy. Both Neutrosophic Logic and Smarandache Geometry were invented some years ago by one of the authors (F. Smarandache). The application of these purely mathematical theories to General Relativity reveals hitherto unknown …

Multivalued Logic, Neutrosophy And Schrodinger Equation, Florentin Smarandache, Victor Christianto
Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications
This book was intended to discuss some paradoxes in Quantum Mechanics from the viewpoint of Multi-Valued-logic pioneered by Lukasiewicz, and a recent concept Neutrosophic Logic. Essentially, this new concept offers new insights on the idea of ‘identity’, which too often it has been accepted as given. Neutrosophy itself was developed in attempt to generalize Fuzzy-Logic introduced by L. Zadeh. While some aspects of theoretical foundations of logic are discussed, this book is not intended solely for pure mathematicians, but instead for physicists in the hope that some of ideas presented herein will be found useful. The book is motivated by …

The Beta-Glucan Receptor Dectin-1 Recognizes Specific Morphologies Of Aspergillus Fumigatus, Chad Steele, Rekha R. Rapaka, Allison Metz, Shannon M. Pop, David L. Williams, Siamon Gordon, Jay K. Kolls, Gordon D. Brown
ETSU Faculty Works
Alveolar macrophages represent a first-line innate host defense mechanism for clearing inhaled Aspergillus fumigatus from the lungs, yet contradictory data exist as to which alveolar macrophage recognition receptor is critical for innate immunity to A. fumigatus. Acknowledging that the A. fumigatus cell wall contains a high beta-1,3-glucan content, we questioned whether the beta-glucan receptor dectin-1 played a role in this recognition process. Monoclonal antibody, soluble receptor, and competitive carbohydrate blockage indicated that the alveolar macrophage inflammatory response, specifically the production of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1α (IL-1α), IL-1β, IL-6, CXCL2/macrophage inflammatory protein-2 (MIP-2), CCL3/macrophage inflammatory protein-1α (MIP-1α), granulocyte-colony stimulating factor …

Chaotic Desynchronization Of Multistrain Diseases, Ira Schwartz, Leah Shaw, Derek Cummings, Lora Billings, Marie Mccrary, Donald Burke
Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Multistrain diseases are diseases that consist of several strains, or serotypes. The serotypes may interact by antibody-dependent enhancement rADE, in which infection with a single serotype is asymptomatic, but infection with a second serotype leads to serious illness accompanied by greater infectivity. It has been observed from serotype data of dengue hemorrhagic fever that outbreaks of the four serotypes occur asynchronously. Both autonomous and seasonally driven outbreaks were studied in a model containing ADE. For sufficiently small ADE, the number of infectives of each serotype synchronizes, with outbreaks occurring in phase. When the ADE increases past a threshold, the system …
A Note On The Orientation Of Symmetric Rigid Bodies Sedimenting In A Power-Law Fluid, Ashuwin Vaidya
A Note On The Orientation Of Symmetric Rigid Bodies Sedimenting In A Power-Law Fluid, Ashuwin Vaidya
Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
We study the terminal orientation of symmetric bodies translating in a quiescent liquid modeled by the power-law fluid. We are able to show by invoking the symmetries of the sedimenting body and the Stokes flow field that at small Reynolds numbers, the competition of inertial and shear-thinning (or shear-thickening) contributions to the torque does not cause the tilt angle that is observed in experiments performed on viscoelastic liquids with shear-thinning properties.

The Stochastic Dance Of Early Hiv Infection, Stephen J. Merrill
The Stochastic Dance Of Early Hiv Infection, Stephen J. Merrill
Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
The stochastic nature of early HIV infection is described in a series of models, each of which captures aspects of the dance of HIV during the early stages of infection. It is to this highly variable target that the immune response must respond. The adaptability of the various components of the immune response is an important aspect of the system's operation, as the nature of the pathogens that the response will be required to respond to and the order in which those responses must be made cannot be known beforehand. As HIV infection has direct influence over cells responsible for …

Structural Allostery And Binding Of The Transferrin·Receptor Complex, Guozhong Xu, Mark R. Chance
Structural Allostery And Binding Of The Transferrin·Receptor Complex, Guozhong Xu, Mark R. Chance
Faculty Scholarship
The structural allostery and binding interface for the human serum transferrin (Tf)-transferrin receptor (TfR) complex were identified using radiolytic footprinting and mass spectrometry. We have determined previously that the transferrin C-lobe binds to the receptor helical domain. In this study we examined the binding interactions of full-length transferrin with receptor and compared these data with a model of the complex derived from cryoelectron microscopy (cryo-EM) reconstructions (Cheng, Y., Zak, O., Aisen, P., Harrison, S. C. & Walz, T. (2004) Structure of the human transferrin receptor-transferrin complex. Cell 116, 565-576). The footprinting results provide the following novel conclusions. First, we report …
