This essay explores how some “Maghrebian” novelists represent and problematize their relation to “Maghrebness” or “maghrebinité”. Using postcolonial theory and Réda Bensmaia's Alger ou La maladie de la mémoire, the author shows how problematic the concept of “Maghrebian literature” can be when one considers its transnational and transcultural poetics and its de-territorialization.

Community Participation In Mine Action: A Review And Conceptual Framework, Ruth Bottomley

In line with the Norwegian People's Aid (NPA) international strategy, which promotes a rights-based partnership approach, the NPA is committed to exploring new approaches to mine action that promote greater involvement of the local mine affected populations. A starting point in this process is a review and conceptual framework paper prepared for NPA by Ruth Bottomley. Through a review of existing documents, the paper provides a reflection on why community participation is important in mine action and outlines some of the challenges. Existing examples of community participation in mine action are compiled with documented strengths and weaknesses.

Gamma-Ray Induced Photoconductivity In Pyrex, Quartz, And Vycor, Shoaib Usman, Lubna Shoaib, James N. Anno

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Results of an experimental investigation are reported on photoconductive response of Pyrex, Quartz and Vycor. This research was conducted as a feasibility study for developing a new gamma dose measurement device based on the principle of photoconductivity. However, data collected in this study are equally valuable for various other applications where these materials are to be used in high radiation field. Our experiments and analyzes indicated that the selected dosimeter materials exhibit photoconductivity and respond to changes in gamma dose rate within a useful range. Pyrex glass suffered radiation damage at a relatively high dose rate of 0.25 Gys/sup -1/. …

Testing The European Dream: Social Ideals And Cultural Realities In A Unified Europe, Lindsay Jorgensen

This paper addresses the viability of the European Dream proposed by Jeremy Rifkin through an examination of the tension resulting from cross-cultural acts of violence. Using primary sources and reactions to these events in the press, I show the inadequacy of Rifkin’s theory to address certain aspects of European reality. Centering on the case of Germany, I then explore depictions of the European Dream and of the obstacles faced by non-Germans in pursuing that dream in a variety of texts by immigrant and minority authors. This is an evaluation of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) report: Annual Report in Support of Compliance Plan No. CP-50284-0001. This evaluation was performed for STAND, an organization of concerned citizens.

The Annual Report contains little original information. It briefly summarizes information contained in other DOE reports regarding clean-up activities at Pantex. It does not present a thorough analysis of the effectiveness of DOE’s clean-up activities. The title compound, C26H32, was retrieved as one of three products from the reaction of tert-butyl­lithium with 11,12-dimethyl­ene-9,10-dihydro­ethenoanthracene and 4,5-diiodo­penta­cyclo­[4.3.0.02,4.03,8.05,7]nonane. The structure shows the expected ethenoanthracene geometry with mol­ecules arranged via van der Waals surfaces.

Effect Of Sand And Wood-Shavings Bedding On The Behavior Of Broiler Chickens, S. J. Shields, J. P. Garner, J. A. Mench

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of 2 different bedding types, sand and wood shavings, on the behavior of broiler chickens. In experiment 1, 6 pens were divided down the center and bedded half with sand and half with wood shavings. Male broilers (10/pen) were observed by scan sampling at 5- or 12-min intervals throughout the 6-wk growth period during the morning (between 0800 to 0900 h), afternoon (1200 to 1500 h), and night (2300 to 0600 h). There was a significant behavior x substrate x week interaction during the day (P < 0.0001) and at night (P < 0.0002). Drinking, dustbathing, preening, and sitting increased in frequency on the sand side but decreased on the wood shavings side during the day, as did resting at night. In general, broilers performed a greater proportion of their total behavioral time budget on the sand (P < 0.0001) as they aged. Broilers used the divider between the 2 bedding types to perch; perching behavior peaked during wk 4. In experiment 2, male broilers were housed in 8 pens (50 birds/pen) bedded only in sand or wood shavings. Bedding type had no effect on behavioral time budgets (P = 0.8946), although there were age-related changes in behavior on both bedding types. These results indicate that when given a choice, broilers increasingly performed many of their behaviors on sand, but if only one bedding type was provided they performed those behaviors with similar frequency on sand or wood shavings.
