Application Of Information-Theoretic Data Mining Techniques In A National Ambulatory Practice Outcomes Research Network, Adam Wright, Thomas N. Ricciardi, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Medical Quality Improvement Consortium data warehouse contains de-identified data on more than 3.6 million patients including their problem lists, test results, procedures and medication lists. This study uses reconstructability analysis, an information-theoretic data mining technique, on the MQIC data warehouse to empirically identify risk factors for various complications of diabetes including myocardial infarction and microalbuminuria. The risk factors identified match those risk factors identified in the literature, demonstrating the utility of the MQIC data warehouse for outcomes research, and RA as a technique for mining clinical data warehouses.

Ordering Genetic Algorithm Genomes With Reconstructability Analysis: Discrete Models, Stephen Shervais, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

The building block hypothesis implies that genetic algorithm effectiveness is influenced by the relative location of epistatic genes on the chromosome. We demonstrate this with a discrete-valued problem, based on Kauffman’s NK model, and show that information-theoretic reconstructability analysis can be used to decide on optimal gene ordering.

Final Report Regional Lake Management Planning For Tmdl Development, Mark Sytsma

Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations

Since the mid-1900’s, invasive aquatic weeds have been a significant problem in many of the lakes of the Clatsop Plains on the northern Oregon Coast. Weeds interfere with beneficial uses, such as boating, fishing and swimming, and have dramatically altered the chemical and biological features of the lakes. In 1994, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) added three of the lakes, Cullaby, Smith and Sunset, to the 303 (d) list of water quality impaired waters, due to the presence of the invasive aquatic weeds. ODEQ contracted with the Center for Lakes and Reservoirs and the Geology Department at PSU …

關於中國建立反壟斷法體系的幾個基本問題 = Some Basic Issues About Establishing An Anti-Monopoly System In China, Ping Lin

CAPS Working Paper Series

In contrary to the spirit of modern competition policy, China has been emphasizing almost solely the fairness and social justice aspects of antitrust. The objective achieving efficient allocation of resources has yet to be incorporated explicitly into China’s competition laws. China should make full use of economics principles in drafting and implementing its competition policy. Competition laws protect competition, rather than competitors. China should abandon the vocabulary and logics that are incompatible with the “invisible hand” doctrine, and establish ways of thinking of modern competition policy. Competition policy is no substitute for industrial policy, and should not be …

Chinese Approaches To Institutionalizing Regional Multilateralism, Chien Peng Chung Oct 2005

Chinese Approaches To Institutionalizing Regional Multilateralism, Chien Peng Chung

CAPS Working Paper Series

Over the last few years, China has promoted all kinds of regional and sub-regional cooperation in Asia. However, the extent of China’s drive for institutionalization of cooperative regional multilateral processes is limited by two realist considerations: I) Distribution of power among the forum participants, and whether the major players are well-disposed towards China or not so and II) the importance of the issues that the specific forum is set up to deal with, particularly to the political, economic or security interests of China, but also that of other participating states.

China has successfully pushed for a high degree of institutionalization …

The Seven Years' War In New York State: Introduction, Timothy J. Shannon Oct 2005

The Seven Years' War In New York State: Introduction, Timothy J. Shannon

History Faculty Publications

Ask the average person on the street about the Seven Years' War and you are likely to get a blank stare. Try again, only this time call the conflict "The French and Indian War" and you might get a faint smile of recognition. Take a different approach: ask random strangers their opinion about The Last of the Mohicans. Many will tell you they loved it, although they will more likely be thinking about Daniel Day-Lewis than James Fenimore Cooper.

Such has been the fate of one of the most important events in early history. In 2004, the 250th anniversary of …

Concientious Cinema: Senegalese Cineastes As Preservers Of Cultural Identity And Promoters Of Social Change, Paula Fortner Oct 2005

Concientious Cinema: Senegalese Cineastes As Preservers Of Cultural Identity And Promoters Of Social Change, Paula Fortner

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Senegalese cinema was born with a conscience. From its earliest days, Senegalese films have been marked by tendencies to preserve cultural identity and promote social change. Using background research, film screenings, discussions, and interviews, this study categories these trends into a movement of “Conscientious Cinema,” and identifies the development of both of these objectives. This study first traces the trend of cultural identity preservation from the films of the founding generation to their evolution in the projects of young filmmakers today, and similarly explores the development of the trend of social-change promotion from between these generations. In the analysis, I …

Maternity, Sexuality, And Capability: An Exploration Of The Aesthetics Of The Rural Moroccan Female Body, Carlye Warren Oct 2005

Maternity, Sexuality, And Capability: An Exploration Of The Aesthetics Of The Rural Moroccan Female Body, Carlye Warren

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper provides an intimate look at the rural female body and its nuances – aesthetics, self-perception, sexuality, maternity, and purity. Based on this research conducted in the rural village of Loutichina, it seems apparent that almost unrealistic demands are traditionally made on the rural female body, most noticeably the demands of reproduction and physical labor. Local perceptions and attitudes towards maternity and sexuality are also explored, as is the way in which the rural female body undergoes basic biological changes and cycles and is simultaneously affected by surrounding social and cultural pressures. Ethically, I was confronted with issues of …

Comparing Rural And Urban Primary Education In The Mekong Delta, Helen Behr Oct 2005

Comparing Rural And Urban Primary Education In The Mekong Delta, Helen Behr

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Over the course of one month I conducted a study of primary education in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. I compared rural and urban schools to determine what the differences were, how they are reflected in individual schools, and what effects these differences have on individual children. I visited and studied three schools in Can Tho City and three schools in rural communities outside of Can Tho. The differences expected were in enrollment, teacher qualifications, facilities, student motivation and ambition, and curriculum.

Data was compiled from classroom observations, interviews with principals and teachers, and surveys completed by students. Results indicate …

Avoid Cold: A Brief Look At Tibetan Medical Practice And Ideals Compared To Modern Allopathic Medical Treatment Through A Study And Analysis Of The Essential Tremor, Graham Brant-Zawadzki

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

For hundreds of years, western science understood the material world as a set of individual objects assembled into an impossibly large and complex machine. This mechanistic ideology, dubbed reductionism, finds its roots in the mathematical theories of Newton, the philosophy of Descartes, and the methodological approaches proposed by Francis Bacon. The culmination of these ideologies lead to the belief that all complex systems could be understood and ultimately mastered by reducing them to their basic elements. Some texts, including Fritjof Capra's The Turning Point argue that once classical physicists established this type of thought, the other sciences, including medicine, simply …

The Role Of Tibetan Buddhism And Culture In Sustainable Development (A Case Study Of Yubeng Village), Frazer Lanier Oct 2005

The Role Of Tibetan Buddhism And Culture In Sustainable Development (A Case Study Of Yubeng Village), Frazer Lanier

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

During a lecture by Li Bo, of CBIK (the Center for Biodiversity and Indigenous Knowledge a Chinese NGO), I was given a glimpse into the role that culture plays within poverty alleviation and environmental conservation. While poverty alleviation aims to develop community economies, this goal is usually seen as being in conflict with environmental conservation because it requires the use of environmental resources. This is a common misperception. According to Gou Jing’s article Gateway between Culture and Nature, “man’s touch bestows nature with culture” (Guo Jing 12). The interaction between nature and humans is the foundation for culture and the …

Microcredit In The Rural Areas Of Northwest Yunnan Province, China: Investigating The Operation Of, Results Of, And Obstacles To Microfinancial Institutions, Evan Hofmockel

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The UN declared 2005 the Silver Year of International Microfinance, due to the successes of microcredit programs in underdeveloped countries around the world since the phenomenon first started appearing in the eighties and nineties. Although programs succeed, it is not without great effort, extended time periods, and competent administration. Previous research of microfinance in Yunnan Province, China has indicated that some of the greatest barriers to success in the programs are their administrative costs and instability, information inequity, and borrowers’ misunderstanding of policies or refusal to adhere to those policies. The purpose of this paper will be to investigate in …

Melbourne’S Community Gardens: Harvesting More Than Just Vegetables, Dana E. Kennedy Oct 2005

Melbourne’S Community Gardens: Harvesting More Than Just Vegetables, Dana E. Kennedy

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Research on community gardens is an increasingly important area of study. As the percentage of the global population living in cities continues to climb, community gardens have the ability to reach increasing numbers of people. Previous research has shown that these spaces allocated for the growing of vegetables, flowers, fruit and/or herbs, produce many outcomes reaching beyond their members and into the surrounding environment. Studies indicate that this localized method of food production is able to reduce food costs for those involved, serve as an educational tool and provide a platform for community building, socialization, neighborhood renewal, and environmental remediation. …
