Ceg 498: Design Experience, Thomas C. Hartrum Oct 2005

Ceg 498: Design Experience, Thomas C. Hartrum

Computer Science & Engineering Syllabi

CEG 498 (Design Experience) is a summative computer engineering design project course that builds upon previous engineering, science, mathematics and communications course work. CEG 498 projects are a minimum of two quarters in length and must be completed in groups of at least three students. Projects are selected under the guidance of the course instructor and are tailored to both student interest and formal classroom preparation. Students are evaluated both on their individual contributions as recorded in a graded engineering journals and on the quality of their collective efforts as reflected in group generated products.

Cs 415: Social Implications Of Computing, Leo Finkelstein

Computer Science & Engineering Syllabi

CS 415 is a communication skills course using as its subject matter current salient issues associated with the social implications of computing. In addition to the course text, you will need to use certain reading materials in the library and elsewhere, and you will be responsible for using concepts and theories provided in class lectures and discussions. The goal of this course is to blend social implications issues with common technical communication formats you'll need to be familiar with out in the "real world." To do this, the course is built around a research project on a social implications topic …

Benzothiadiazoles And Dipyrrolyl Quinoxalines With Extended Conjugated Chromophores−Fluorophores And Anion Sensors, Dmitry Aldakov, Manuel A. Palacios, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Stable fluorescent chromophores find use in a growing number of practical applications, including their utility as laser dyes,1 emitters in light-emitting diodes,2 photoconductors,3 optical data storage,4 and optical switches.5 Stable fluorophores with high quantum yields are widely used in fluorescent sensors6 and labels.7 These became very popular lately, owing to their potential for high sensitivity at low concentration coupled with decreased cost of the required equipment.8 Recently, we have described a new class of fluorescent anion sensors bearing extended conjugated chromophores9 with incorporated 2,3-di(1H-2-pyrrolyl)quinoxaline, (DPQ), as the anion recognition element.10 Literature shows that DPQ binds anions via hydrogen bonding between …

Regularity Of Digits And Significant Digits Of Random Variables, Theodore P. Hill, Klaus Schürger Oct 2005

Regularity Of Digits And Significant Digits Of Random Variables, Theodore P. Hill, Klaus Schürger

Research Scholars in Residence

A random variable X is digit-regular (respectively, significant-digit-regular) if the probability that every block of k given consecutive digits (significant digits) appears in the b-adic expansion of X approaches b-k as the block moves to the right, for all integers b>1 and k≥1. Necessary and sufficient conditions are established, in terms of convergence of Fourier coefficients, and in terms of convergence in distribution modulo 1, for a random variable to be digit-regular (significant-digit-regular), and basic relationships between digit-regularity and various classical classes of probability measures and normal numbers are given. These results provide a theoretical basis for analyses …

Feminism And The Art Of Interpretation: Or, Reading The First Wave To Think About The Second And Third Waves, Marilyn Fischer Oct 2005

Feminism And The Art Of Interpretation: Or, Reading The First Wave To Think About The Second And Third Waves, Marilyn Fischer

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Cory, my daughter, accuses me of having no thoughts of my own. I was talking with Jeremy [“Cory, what do you call him? partner? significant other? boyfriend?” “Mom, I just call him Jeremy.” Alright, then.]. Jeremy asked why I was an almost pacifist. Without even breathing, I launched into Addams’s arguments for pacifism, fully attributed to her, of course. That’s when Cory accused me of having no thoughts of my own. So, if I have no thoughts of my own, inhabiting Addams’s thoughts is not a bad substitute.

Remembering how Addams viewed much of her work as interpreting American institutions …

Understanding The Cost Of The War Against Iraq And How That Realization Can Affect International Law, David Allen Larson Oct 2005

Understanding The Cost Of The War Against Iraq And How That Realization Can Affect International Law, David Allen Larson

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article critiques the U.S. invasion of Iraq, arguing that its legality under international law is highly questionable due to the lack of Security Council authorization and its deviation from the U.N. Charter's provisions on the use of force. It also highlights the staggering financial and human costs of the war, emphasizing that the funds spent on the invasion could have addressed critical domestic and global challenges such as healthcare, education, and poverty. The article advocates for greater U.S. compliance with international law and encourages readers to reconsider the allocation of resources to achieve more equitable and ethical outcomes.

Numerical Comparative Law: Do We Need Statistical Evidence In Law In Order To Reduce Complexity?, Mathias M. Siems Oct 2005

Numerical Comparative Law: Do We Need Statistical Evidence In Law In Order To Reduce Complexity?, Mathias M. Siems

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article explores the use of numerical methods in comparative law, questioning whether statistical approaches can effectively simplify legal complexity without oversimplification. It examines both the potential benefits and drawbacks of quantifying legal systems, arguing that while numerical methods can enhance practical utility, they must be used cautiously to avoid neglecting legal complexity and contextual factors.

Contractarianism And Corporate Law: Alternative Explanations To The Law's Mandatory And Enabling/Default Contents, Ige Omotayo Bolodeoku Oct 2005

Contractarianism And Corporate Law: Alternative Explanations To The Law's Mandatory And Enabling/Default Contents, Ige Omotayo Bolodeoku

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article critically examines the contractarian theory of corporate law, which posits that corporate governance should primarily consist of default rules that parties can modify through private bargaining. While this approach offers valuable economic insights, the article argues that its limitations as both a descriptive and prescriptive framework undermine its effectiveness in addressing the complexities of corporate governance, particularly in widely held companies. The analysis highlights the tension between the efficiency of default rules and the need for mandatory legal protections to prevent managerial abuse and protect public interests. Ultimately, the article advocates for a balanced approach that incorporates both …

Globalization & Law: Beyond Traditional Methodology Of Comparative Legal Studies And An Example From Private International Law, Fabio Morosini Oct 2005

Globalization & Law: Beyond Traditional Methodology Of Comparative Legal Studies And An Example From Private International Law, Fabio Morosini

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article explores the impact of globalization on comparative legal studies and private international law, arguing that traditional methodologies in comparative law must evolve to address the challenges posed by globalization. It emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary approaches, particularly incorporating economic analysis, to better understand and adapt to the changing legal landscape. The analysis focuses on the European Union as a case study, demonstrating how European Community law influences the private international law of its member states and advocating for methodological innovations to maintain the relevance of comparative legal studies in a globalized world.
