Forty Years After Title Vii: Creating An Atmosphere Conducive To Diversity In The Corporate Boardroom, Donald J. Polden
Faculty Publications
This article analyzes affirmative action in employment: one of the most controversial government policies of the last decade, and one that continues to divide the passions and sensibilities of Americans. This article also addresses the effects of Title VII on employment opportunities for women. In particular, the article considers how successful the fundamental policies of Title VII have been in increasing diversity on corporate boards of directors, and investigates whether increased diversity will improve the performance of publicly traded companies.

Prospects Of Kenaf As An Alternative Field Crop In Virginia, Harbans L. Bhardwaj, Charles L. Webber Iii
Prospects Of Kenaf As An Alternative Field Crop In Virginia, Harbans L. Bhardwaj, Charles L. Webber Iii
Virginia Journal of Science
Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.), a warm-season annual plant, has shown potential as an alternate source of fiber in the United States. Although preliminary research has indicated feasibility of kenaf production in Virginia, production details are lacking. Field experiments were conducted during 1995 and 1996 to determine optimal row spacing and fertilizer needs, and to compare available kenaf cultivars. Although results indicated that differences in dry matter yields from four row spacings (30, 60, 90, and 120 cm) and four rates each of N, P, and K fertilizers (50, 100, 150, and 200 kg ha-1) were not …

Forest fragmentation may cause increased brood parasitism and nest predation of breeding birds. In North America, nest parasitism and predation are expected to increase closer to forest edges because the brood-parasitic Brown-headed Cowbird(Molothrus ater) and generalist nest predators often enter the forest from adjoining developed (largely agricultural) habitats. Yet the abundance of brood parasites and nest predators at the patch scale may be strongly constrained by the total area of developed habitat at landscape scales. The scale and extent of landscape effects are unclear, however, because past studies were mostly conducted within local landscapes rather than across independent landscapes. We …

The prairie pothole region (PPR) lies in the heart of North America and contains millions of glacially formed, depressional wetlands embedded in a landscape matrix of natural grassland and agriculture. These wetlands provide valuable ecosystem services and produce 50% to 80% of the continent's ducks. We explored the broad spatial and temporal patterns across the PPR between climate and wetland water levels and vegetation by applying a wetland simulation model (WETSIM) to 18 stations with 95-year weather records. Simulations suggest that the most productive habitat for breeding waterfowl would shift under a drier climate from the center of the PPR …
Changes In Bird Abundance After Wildfire: Importance Of Fire Severity And Time Since Fire, Kristina M. Smucker, Richard L. Hutto, Brian M. Steele
Changes In Bird Abundance After Wildfire: Importance Of Fire Severity And Time Since Fire, Kristina M. Smucker, Richard L. Hutto, Brian M. Steele
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Fire can cause profound changes in the composition and abundance of plant and animal species, but logistics, unpredictability of weather, and inherent danger make it nearly impossible to study high-severity fire effects experimentally. We took advantage of a unique opportunity to use a before–after/control–impact (BACI) approach to analyze changes in bird assemblages after the severe fires of 2000 in the Bitterroot Valley, Montana. Observers surveyed birds using 10-minute point counts and collected vegetation data from 13 burned and 13 unburned transects for five years before fire and three years after fire. We compared changes in vegetation variables and relative bird …
A Systematic, Reliable Approach To Play Assessment In Preschoolers, Lisa Kelly-Vance, Bridget O. Ryalls
A Systematic, Reliable Approach To Play Assessment In Preschoolers, Lisa Kelly-Vance, Bridget O. Ryalls
Psychology Faculty Publications
Play assessment is gaining attention as a measure of the developing skills of young children. The procedures and methods of coding child behaviours vary considerably across researchers and practitioners. Because of this, definitive statements about the use of play assessment cannot be made without further research. The present study is an attempt to report a set of standardized procedures for play assessment along with an empirically based coding scheme (PIECES). The reliability of this system of play assessment is also investigated. High inter-observer reliability was found along with moderate test–retest correlations for both the typically developing (r = 0.48) and …

Dartmouth Scholarship
Multi-wavelength Near-Infrared (NIR) Tomography was utilized in this study to non-invasively quantify physiological parameters of breast tumors using direct spectral reconstruction. Frequency domain NIR measurements were incorporated with a new spectrally constrained direct chromophore and scattering image reconstruction algorithm, which was validated in simulations and experimental phantoms. Images of total hemoglobin, oxygen saturation, water, and scatter parameters were obtained with higher accuracy than previously reported. Using this spectral approach, in vivo NIR images are presented and interpreted through a series of case studies (n=6 subjects) having differing abnormalities. The corresponding mammograms and ultrasound images are also evaluated. Three of six …

Book Ownership And Authorial Identity: Reconstructing The (Im)Personal Library Of Arthur Hugh Clough, Patrick G. Scott
Faculty Publications
Describes the different evidence that survives for the personal libraries owned by two Victorian poets, Alfred Tennyson and Arthur Hugh Clough, and discusses the ways in which such book-ownership is (and is not) usable as evidence about the author's thought and writing. This paper was originally presented at the North American Victorian Studies Association Conference, Charlottesville, VA, October 1, 2005.

An Update On Colonial Witch Bottles, Marshall Joseph Becker
An Update On Colonial Witch Bottles, Marshall Joseph Becker
Anthropology & Sociology Faculty Publications
The discovery of an 18th century "witch bottle" during controlled excavations at a colonial site in Essington, Pennsylvania in 1976 provided the first archaeological evidence for the use of these magical charms in the New World. Since that time, the author has identified five additional specimens in the northeastern United States. The geographic distribution of these artifacts reflects a widespread belief in magic in the northeastern English colonies. One recovered Pennsylvania witch bottle suggests that the use of magical charms lingered into the early 19th century.
