SWOSU Yearbooks
As we look back on the success of past generations at SWOSU, we can only have the same hope for our future. The faces have changed and so have the fashions, but the tradition of excellence has remained the same throughout SWOSU's history. So as we graduate, and begin to look forward, we really can say... the future is history.

The End Of The Reformation In Valais, Theol. Gerda Altpeter, Margot Durrer
The End Of The Reformation In Valais, Theol. Gerda Altpeter, Margot Durrer
Swiss American Historical Society Review
At the time of the Reformation, Valais was under the jurisdiction of France, Savoy and Spanish Milan. In the last decade of the 16th century and then more intensely in the 17th century, it became a theater for the dynamics of this power. Valais stood in a close relationship with their Savoyard neighbors that had evolved from a relationship of competition into a more friendly union by the 16th Century. The first accord came in 1528 when the Duke of Savoy withdrew from the district of Saint-Maurice, (conquered in 1475). In 1536 Valais engaged with Bern in a concentrated battle …

'Listen, Rama’S Wife!’: Maithil Women’S Perspectives And Practices In The Festival Of Sāmā-Cakevā, Coralynn V. Davis
Faculty Journal Articles
As a female-only festival in a significantly gender-segregated society, sāmā cakevā provides a window into Maithil women’s understandings of their society and the sacred, cultural subjectivities, moral frameworks, and projects of self-construction. The festival reminds us that to read male-female relations under patriarchal social formations as a dichotomy between the empowered and the disempowered ignores the porous boundaries between the two in which negotiations and tradeoffs create a symbiotic reliance. Specifically, the festival names two oppositional camps—the male world of law and the female world of relationships—and then creates a male character, the brother, who moves between the two, loyal …

Working Between Two Worlds: New Roles For Traditional Thai Dance And Dancers, Pornrat Damrhung
Working Between Two Worlds: New Roles For Traditional Thai Dance And Dancers, Pornrat Damrhung
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Thailand's financial collapse and new constitution in 1997 brought issues of commercialization, education reform, and decentralization to the forefront of arts and culture. The paper focuses on three aspects of the current situation of the traditional arts and artists in Thailand. First, the commercialized globalization of the arts has prompted some artists to create drama companies and theatre events woven through with Western themes and contemporary forms, but grounded in traditional Thai performance. Second, the new emphasis on arts education by Thailand's recent educational reforms has prompted the creation of new arts education programs that train local artists to adapt …

Experiences Of Adults Abused As Children After Discharge From Inpatient Treatment: Informal Social Support And Self-Care Practices Related To Trauma Recovery, Carol A. Stalker, Kim Harper, Sally Palmer, Susan Gadbois
Lyle S. Hallman Social Work Faculty Publications
This qualitative study explored adults’ perceptions of experiences that were helpful and unhelpful to their recovery from the traumatic effects of childhood physical and sexual abuse. The authors conducted in-depth interviews with 30 participants approximately 6 months after discharge from an inpatient trauma treatment program. Participants reported that barriers to recovery postdischarge were lack of follow-up support immediately after discharge, social isolation, lack of friends, problems with partners, and lack of emotional support from family members. Facilitating factors were concrete support from family and friends; emotional support, particularly from friends; developing a social network unrelated to the abuse history; and …
