San Diego Burlesque: Bob Johnston's Famous Hollywood Theatre, Jaye Evangeline Furlonger Jan 2005

San Diego Burlesque: Bob Johnston's Famous Hollywood Theatre, Jaye Evangeline Furlonger

Theses

San Diego's Hollywood Theatre, located at 314-316 F Street, was one of the largest ""big time"" burlesque palaces in the nation. Most notably, it was one of the last authentic vestiges for American burlesque entertainment in the twentieth century. The Hollywood was operated independently by charismatic showman Bob Johnston from about 1923 until it closed in 1970. Even though San Diego was still considered a dusty backwater town during most of the Hollywood's run, the theatre was well-known throughout the country for its pretty chorus girls, feature striptease artists, "top bananas" (headlining comics), and spectacular floorshow revues. The Meaning Of Moscow: "Non-Lethal" Weapons And International Law In The Early 21st Century, David P. Fidler Jan 2005

The Meaning Of Moscow: "Non-Lethal" Weapons And International Law In The Early 21st Century, David P. Fidler

Articles by Maurer Faculty

At the intersection of new weapon technologies and international humanitarian law, so-called "non-lethal" weapons have become an area of particular interest. This article analyses the relationship between "non-lethal" weapons and international law in the early 21st century by focusing on the most seminal incident to date in the short history of the "non-lethal" weapons debate, the use of an incapacitating chemical to end a terrorist attack on a Moscow theatre in October 2002. This tragic incident has shown that rapid technological change will continue to stress international law on the development and use of weaponry but in ways more politically …

Interpreting Lived Experience Through Writing Online In A Graduate Seminar, Mary Clare Courtland, John Novak, Gail Lafleur, Ken Mcclelland, Steve Sider, Joan Shaw Jan 2005

Interpreting Lived Experience Through Writing Online In A Graduate Seminar, Mary Clare Courtland, John Novak, Gail Lafleur, Ken Mcclelland, Steve Sider, Joan Shaw

Education Faculty Publications

Participants in an online doctoral seminar participated in the use of a writing strategy to explore the sociocultural contexts of their lived experience. Creating literary texts in three forms was an effective strategy in mediating participants’ understanding. Each form provided a new lens through which to interpret experience. Participants functioned as an interpretive community. The final papers, autobiographical narratives, illuminated the complex relations among prediscursive experience, reflection on experience, distancing, and the iterative transformational quality of time. The online format embodied a virtual interpretive location which allowed participants to revisit texts and postings over time.

Why Protect Political Art As Political Speech, David Greene Jan 2005

Why Protect Political Art As Political Speech, David Greene

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Politics and art make for a volatile combination both socially and jurisprudentially. Although the capacity of artistic expression to relay political ideas was one of the driving forces behind the recognition of strong First Amendment rights for artistic expression, governmental officials tend toward the censorious when art communicates too much and "offends" or causes "controversy." Indeed, when art is "public," that is funded or exhibited by a governmental entity, public officials would often prefer that it contain no message at all. This article reviews the evolution of First Amendment protection for artistic expression, discusses why artistic expression is protected by …

Picking Battles, Finding Joy: Creating Community In The "Uncontrolled" Classroom, Kerri Ullucci Jan 2005

Picking Battles, Finding Joy: Creating Community In The "Uncontrolled" Classroom, Kerri Ullucci

Education Faculty Publications

Every educator has a handful of students who perpetually push his or her buttons. The challenge of creating a strong, nurturing classroom community is especially difficult if you are an urban school teacher. Not because children in an urban area are inherently more wild or difficult to teach. Rather, there is a mythology about how to best "control" urban children that infects many city schools. This article discusses ways to control classrooms in urban schools and contains the following sections: (1) The Carrot and the Stick--Behaviorism in the Urban Classroom; (2) The "Uncontrolled" Urban Class; (3) Classroom Mantras; (4) I …

The narrative is interspersed with paintings, photographs, and excerpts from various memoirs, autobiographies and correspondences.

The Global Cultural Commons After Cancun: Identity, Diversity And Citizenship, Daniel Drache, Marc D. Froese Jan 2005

The Global Cultural Commons After Cancun: Identity, Diversity And Citizenship, Daniel Drache, Marc D. Froese

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

The cultural politics of global trade is a new and unexplored terrain because the public domain of culture has long been associated with national sovereignty. States everywhere have invested heavily in national identity. But in an age of globalization, culture and sovereignty have become more complex propositions, subject to global pressures and national constraints. This paper argues three main points. First, new information technologies increasingly destabilize traditional private sector models for disseminating culture. At the same time, international legal rules have become more restrictive with respect to investment and national treatment, two areas at the heart of cultural policy. Second, …
