El Niño Causes Dramatic Outbreak Of Paederus Dermatitis In East Africa, Ingeborg M.C.J. Van Schayk, Ruben O. Agwanda, John I. Githure, John C. Beier, Bart G.J. Knols

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

An outbreak of Paederus sabaeus rove beetles in Kenya during the 1997-1998 El Niño resulted in a dramatic increase of vesicular dermatitis in its capital Nairobi. The beetle, popularly called ‘Nairobi Fly’, contains a potent toxic fluid that causes epidermolysis and acute conjunctivitis. A cross-sectional epidemiological study involving 1,208 Nairobi residents was conducted to determine the health impact of this outbreak. The results showed that one-third of the Nairobi population were infected during this period. The majority of the respondents reported lesions on exposed body parts above the shoulders. Disfiguring, painful blisters and skin rashes in and around the facial …

Maternal Education And Child Nutritional Status In Bolivia: Finding The Links, Michelle Bellessa Frost, Renata Forste, David W. Haas Jan 2005

Maternal Education And Child Nutritional Status In Bolivia: Finding The Links, Michelle Bellessa Frost, Renata Forste, David W. Haas

Faculty Publications

This study models various pathways linking maternal education and child nutritional status in Bolivia, using a national sample of children. Pathways examined include socioeconomic status, health knowledge, modern attitudes towards health care, female autonomy, and reproductive behavior. The data come from the 1998 Bolivia Demographic and Health Survey. Logistic regression results suggest that socioeconomic factors are the most important pathways linking maternal education and child nutritional status, and that modern attitudes about health care also explain the impact of education. Health care knowledge accounts for less of the effect of maternal education on child nutritional status, with autonomy being the …

Theorizing About Marriage, Jason S. Carroll, Stan J. Knapp, Thomas B. Holman Jan 2005

Theorizing About Marriage, Jason S. Carroll, Stan J. Knapp, Thomas B. Holman

Faculty Publications

Since its inception in the 1920s, research on marriage relationships has attracted widespread attention within a variety of disciplines and has held a central position in the scientific study of families. However, despite marriage scholarship's long tradition and broad interdisciplinary base, a number of scholars believe that this area of research has reached a crossroads at the beginning of the 21st century. This pivotal moment is seen as largely the result of a lack of explicit theory development in the marriage field. In fact, during the past decade several leading marriage scholars have called for the development of broad integrative …

Hamdi Meets Youngstown: Justice Jackson's Wartime Security Jurisprudence And The Detention Of Enemy Combatants, Sarah H. Cleveland

Faculty Scholarship

More than any Justice who has sat on the United States Supreme Court, Associate Justice Robert H. Jackson explained how our Eighteenth Century Constitution – that "Eighteenth-Century sketch of a government hoped for" – struggles both to preserve fundamental liberties and to protect the nation against fundamental threats. Drawing upon his collective experience as a solo practitioner with only one year of formal legal education at Albany Law School; government tax and antitrust lawyer, Solicitor General, and Attorney General in the Roosevelt Administration; Associate Justice to the Supreme Court; and Representative and Chief of Counsel for the United States at …

A Defense Of Paid Family Leave, Gillian Lester Jan 2005

A Defense Of Paid Family Leave, Gillian Lester

Faculty Scholarship

The problem of combining work and family life is perhaps the central challenge for the contemporary American family. In this Article, I evaluate and defend government provision of paid family leave, a benefit that would allow workers to take compensated time off from work for purposes of family caregiving.

A legal intervention in the arena of work-family accommodation can only build on some prior normative understanding of the family, and embedded within that, contested value choices about women's identities and entitlements in workplace, family, and society. I am not the first legal scholar to advocate paid family leave of some …

Developmental Trajectories Of Legal Socialization Among Serious Adolescent Offenders, Alex R. Piquero, Jeffery Fagan, Edward P. Mulvey, Laurence Steinberg, Candice Odgers Jan 2005

Developmental Trajectories Of Legal Socialization Among Serious Adolescent Offenders, Alex R. Piquero, Jeffery Fagan, Edward P. Mulvey, Laurence Steinberg, Candice Odgers

Faculty Scholarship

Legal socialization is the process through which individuals acquire attitudes and beliefs about the law, legal authorities, and legal institutions. This occurs through individuals' interactions, both personal and vicarious, with police, courts, and other legal actors. To date, most of what is known about legal socialization comes from studies of individual differences among adults in their perceived legitimacy of law and legal institutions, and in their cynicism about the law and its underlying norms. This work shows that adults' attitudes about the legitimacy of law are directly tied to individuals' compliance with the law and cooperation with legal authorities. Despite …

Nurses, My Family & Elvis, Cristle Coleman-Griwach Jan 2005

Nurses, My Family & Elvis, Cristle Coleman-Griwach

Theses

This collection of short stories will focus primarily on nurses from the turn of the last century to the present. Some of the stories are fiction and some are based on experiences of nurses I have known. There two stories unrelated to nursing, one is about how my father helped launch El vis Presley's career, the other is about my family.

The goal of the collection is to illustrate the different roles and personalities of nurses. The first story, "A Feather in Her Bonnet" is set in the early nineteen-hundreds. A seemingly innocent feathered bonnet on the head of a …

Motivational Gifts: Do They Really Shape Our Personalities?, Nichole R. Nichols Jan 2005

Motivational Gifts: Do They Really Shape Our Personalities?, Nichole R. Nichols

Theses

This culminating project will focus on the study of Motivational Gifts found in the New Testament of Romans namely, Perceiver, Server, Teacher, Exhorter, Giver, Administrator and Compassion. These gifts highly influence one's personality.

Research has shown an increase in interest in spiritual gifts in the last decade in church ministries. However a literature review reveals that no existing instruments have developed testing for Motivational Gifts that does not focus on biblical principles.

Though many books explore motivational gifts from different perspectives including church growth, awareness, discovery, use, self-assessment, and personal growth, the motivational gift tests commercially available today are worded …

Stereotypes And Prejudice: Intergroup Contact Between Americans And Japanese, Masami Ota Jan 2005

Stereotypes And Prejudice: Intergroup Contact Between Americans And Japanese, Masami Ota

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The goals of this research were twofold. First, this research investigated the current stereotype content between American and Japanese people. Second, the relationship among orientation (individualism or collectivisim), intergroup friendly contact, and stereotype and prejudice variability was assessed. Results showed that both Americans and Japanese have positive stereotypes of each other, with Americans selecting the trait "intelligent" as the most common descriptor of Japanese people, and Japanese selecting the trait "pleasure-loving" the most common descriptor of Americans. Although orientation was not related to the frequency of intergroup contact, friendly intergroup contact was positively related to steretype variability and negatively related …

Summary Of Hymon V. State, 121 Nev. Adv. Op. 23, Bryson D. Perkins

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

In April 2001, Hymon stole a purse from a woman in the lobby of an auto repair shop. He ran, and two of the shop’s mechanics pursued him. They caught up to him when he fell on the curb, but he stood and swung a four- to six-inch long pocketknife. They backed away, allowing him to escape, but the police apprehended him shortly thereafter. After Hymon requested to represent himself, the district court conducted a Faretta canvass,2 and concluded that Hymon was competent to waive his right to counsel. Hymon was uncooperative and unwilling to communicate with the prosecutor, so …

Child Abuse And Crime: Testing In The "Cycle Of Violence" Theory, Melanie A. Cox

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study of Child Abuse and Neglect: Testing in the "Cycle of Violence" Theory, is a demonstration of Applied Social Research in partial fulfillment of a master's degree in Sociology. It examines the Cycle of Violence theory by looking at two groups of children: an abuse/neglect group and a control group. It tests the likelihood of the abuse/neglect group to commit a crime in adulthood i.e., property crime, person crime, or public morality; while controlling for race, sex and type of abuse. Also, the odds of gender and race of the children in the abuse/neglect group, becoming a criminal offender …

Suicide And Socioeconomic Context In The Appalachian Region, Joel A. Halverson Jan 2005

Suicide And Socioeconomic Context In The Appalachian Region, Joel A. Halverson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Significant economic changes have occurred over the past thirty years that have altered the geoeconomic landscape of the United States. Although a considerable literature examines economic impacts that have resulted from these changes, there has been less work devoted to understanding the extraeconomic affects of economic change. Many places in the U.S. have experienced large-scale employment and industry losses over the past thirty years. At the same time some places have experienced rapid industrial and employment growth. Together these events represent the continued process of geographic uneven development and provide the context for examining potential affects that economic conditions and …

Detecting Malingered Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Using The Morel Emotional Numbing Test-Revised (Ment-R) And The Miller Forensic Assessment Of Symptoms Test (M-Fast), Julia M. Strunk Jan 2005

Detecting Malingered Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Using The Morel Emotional Numbing Test-Revised (Ment-R) And The Miller Forensic Assessment Of Symptoms Test (M-Fast), Julia M. Strunk

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

From feigning psychosis to avoid prosecution to claiming an anxiety disorder to receive disability insurance, people from all socioeconomic and educational backgrounds have been suspected of or found to be malingering (Rogers, 1997). The present study investigated the utility of two assessment measures in detecting malingered PTSD: the Morel Emotional Numbing Test-Revised (MENT-R) and Miller Forensic Assessment of Symptoms Test (M-FAST). The Detailed Assessment of Posttraumatic Stress (DAPS) was used as the criterion variable for the following groups: clinical PTSD, subclinical PTSD, honest responders, and coached malingerers. Total scores on the MENT-R distinguished among the four groups of participants. The …

The Role Of Apoptosis In Muscle Remodeling, Parco Ming-Fai Siu Jan 2005

The Role Of Apoptosis In Muscle Remodeling, Parco Ming-Fai Siu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Apoptosis has been implicated in mediating the process of muscle loss during muscle disuse and with aging. However, the physiologic role of apoptosis in muscle remodeling is largely unknown. The purposes of this dissertation were to examine the role of apoptosis in different muscle remodeling conditions including muscle denervation, hindlimb suspension, muscle unloading following overload, endurance treadmill training, and muscle overload in mice, rats, or quails. Apoptotic signaling components and cellular stress markers including Bax, Bcl-2, Apaf-1, cytochrome c, caspases, Smac/DIABLO, XIAP, ARC, FLIP, AIF, p53, Id2, p21, c-Myc, PARP, HSP70, HSP27, HSP60, MnSOD, CuZnSOD, catalase, H2O2, MDA/4-HAE, nitrotyrosine or …

The Relation Of Psychopathic Characteristics And Malingering Of Ptsd, Elizabeth Ann Tyner Jan 2005

The Relation Of Psychopathic Characteristics And Malingering Of Ptsd, Elizabeth Ann Tyner

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Clinical lore suggests that psychopaths should be successful malingers, yet empirical evidence is inconclusive. To further investigate the relation of psychopathy and malingering, 56 undergraduate males were classified into three groups based on responses to one trauma screener (Posttraumatic Stress Diagnostic Scale; PDS, Foa, Cashman, Jaycox & Perry, 1997) and one psychopathy screener (Psychopathic Personality Inventory: Short Form; PPI: SF, Lilienfeld & Andrews, 1996). This multimodal simulation study examined the ability of participants high and low in psychopathic characteristics to successfully malinger PTSD. Contrary to predictions, results indicated that individuals high in psychopathic characteristics were not better at convincing raters …

Predicting Treatment Completion: A Study Of The Federal Bureau Of Prisons' Residential Drug Abuse Program, Y. Tami Yanez Jan 2005

Predicting Treatment Completion: A Study Of The Federal Bureau Of Prisons' Residential Drug Abuse Program, Y. Tami Yanez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Substance abuse and criminal behavior are two commonly associated social concerns. It is not surprising that substance abuse treatment also has demonstrated a reduction not only substance abuse, as well as criminal behavior. The Federal Bureau of Prisons' Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP) has demonstrated wide-reaching benefits. Understanding the 33% non-completion rate of RDAP, then, is an important component of the treatment process. This study, therefore, sought to identify factors present prior to RDAP participation that may predict program completion, which may also guide efforts to reduce relapse and recidivism rates. RDAP completers were slightly more likely to have fewer …

Managerial Networking Of Public And Private Sector: A Study Of Thai Executives, Dean Kyne Jan 2005

Managerial Networking Of Public And Private Sector: A Study Of Thai Executives, Dean Kyne

Sociology Faculty Publications

This research proposes a perspective of managerial networking based on an integration of resource dependence theory and social exchange theory. In order to test applicability of the proposed framework, the study conceptualizes five critical elements of managerial networking, namely motives, activities, relational development, relational strength, and performance due to networking that explain the managerial networking mechanism. All statistical analyses revealed that motives for managerial networking, networking exchange activities, networking relational development and networking relational strength are positively and significantly associated with performance contributed to individual and organizational levels due to their managerial networking. In addition, it was found that the …

Ancient Hatred And Its Contemporary Manifestation: The Torture Of Lesbians, Susan Hawthorne Jan 2005

Ancient Hatred And Its Contemporary Manifestation: The Torture Of Lesbians, Susan Hawthorne

Journal of Hate Studies

This paper looks at a number of different elements that make up the experience of torture by lesbians in the contemporary world. I draw together elements of popular culture, along with testimonies by lesbians, concerning torture in diverse countries, as well as citing some historical sources. I examine the justifications and excuses given for torture, including the view that rape is a normal part of heterosexual activity. I argue that domination is exemplified in the punishment of lesbians as outsiders in patriarchal culture, in particular when groups and nations go to war.I also look at the way in which arguments …

Preface, Jerri Shepard Jan 2005

Preface, Jerri Shepard

Journal of Hate Studies

Most would agree that the transgression of simply going about our own business and ignoring the plight of others pales in comparison to that of committing open acts of violence and hatred. In his poem "Fire and Ice," Robert Frost invites us to ponder a paradox.

Encyclopedia Of Genocide And Crimes, Steven K. Baum Jan 2005

Encyclopedia Of Genocide And Crimes, Steven K. Baum

Journal of Hate Studies

When Israel Charny edited ABC-CLIO’s 2-volume, 720-page Encyclopedia of Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity in 1999, it was not clear that such an extensive work was needed by the field, or that it would be welcome. Although admirable in containing contributions from about 100 contributors and forewords by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Simon Wiesenthal, the two-volume set was a little too detailed at times and was somewhat cumbersome to use. Now, in its third printing, the work has found both its place and its stride. Despite its flaws, the encyclopedia fills avoid and is appreciated by scholars in the field.

Hostility, Forgiveness, And Cardiovascular Reactivity To Stress: Does Forgiveness Mediate Or Moderate The Relation Between Hostility And Cardiovascular Reactivity To Anger -Eliciting Laboratory Experiences?, Danielle H. Hernandez Jan 2005

Hostility, Forgiveness, And Cardiovascular Reactivity To Stress: Does Forgiveness Mediate Or Moderate The Relation Between Hostility And Cardiovascular Reactivity To Anger -Eliciting Laboratory Experiences?, Danielle H. Hernandez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Numerous studies that have examined the physical health consequences of individual variables have focused on negative traits such as hostility, anger, and stress. These studies have demonstrated that such variables are often related to deleterious health outcomes as well as exaggerated cardiovascular reactions to stress. Fewer studies have examined the health benefits of positive variables like forgiveness. Forgiveness and hostility are thought to have an inverse relation, and it is not surprising that forgiveness has been associated with reduced cardiovascular reactivity to stress. Recognizing that hostility is related to elevated cardiovascular reactivity, and that forgiveness is associated with decreased cardiovascular …
