This article summarizes a symposium organized by Dr. Elizabeth D’Amico and presented at the 2004 Annual Meeting of the Research Society on Alcoholism in Vancouver, Canada. The four presentations illustrate the importance of creating substance use interventions that are developmentally appropriate for youth. They represent innovative approaches to working with preteens, teenagers, and young adults. Dr. D’Amico’s paper describes her research on the development of a voluntary brief intervention targeting alcohol use among middle school students. Findings indicated that by using school and community input, she was able to obtain a diverse a sample of youth across grades, sex, ethnicity, …

Conversion From Laparoscopic To Open Cholecystectomy: Multivariate Analysis Of Preoperative Risk Factors, M Tayeb, S A. Raza, M R. Khan, R Azami Jan 2005

Conversion From Laparoscopic To Open Cholecystectomy: Multivariate Analysis Of Preoperative Risk Factors, M Tayeb, S A. Raza, M R. Khan, R Azami

Department of Surgery Docs

Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become the gold standard in the treatment of symptomatic cholelithiasis. Some patients require conversion to open surgery and several preoperative variables have been identified as risk factors that are helpful in predicting the probability of conversion. However, there is a need to devise a risk-scoring system based on the identified risk factors to (a) predict the risk of conversion preoperatively for selected patients, (b) prepare the patient psychologically, (c) arrange operating schedules accordingly, and (d) minimize the procedure-related cost and help overcome financial constraints, which is a significant problem in developing countries.AIM: This study was aimed …

Spiritual Custody: Relational Rights And Constitutional Commitments, Jeffrey Shulman Jan 2005

Spiritual Custody: Relational Rights And Constitutional Commitments, Jeffrey Shulman

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Patricia and David Zummo were married on December 17, 1978. When they divorced ten years later, the Zummos were unable to come to agreement about the religious upbringing of their three children. Prior to their marriage, Patricia and David had agreed that they would raise their children in the Jewish faith, and while they were married, "the Zummo family participated fully in the life of the Jewish faith and community." But after the divorce David wanted to take the children to Roman Catholic services as he saw fit, and he refused to arrange for the children's attendance at Hebrew School …

Terror And Race, Girardeau A. Spann Jan 2005

Terror And Race, Girardeau A. Spann

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The United States is now engaged in an internationally prominent war on terror. That war, however, is being waged in a way that threatens to cause the same types of harm to the democratic values of the United States that the Nation's terrorist enemies are hoping to inflict. Foreign terrorists are attempting to undermine the fundamental liberties that United States culture claims to hold dear. But those are the same liberties that our own government has asked us to forego in its effort to win the war on terror. The paradoxical irony entailed in the United States government's demand that …

Torture's Truth, Louis Michael Seidman Jan 2005

Torture's Truth, Louis Michael Seidman

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In this Article, I argue that the obstacles to having a serious conversation about torture are exacerbated by a truth that torture teaches us - a truth that we cannot afford fully to know and, so, frantically try to obscure. Law is about respect for commitments and limits, and the existence of torture challenges the possibility of such respect. If we are prepared to torture, then, it would seem, we are prepared to do anything, and the restraint that law purports to impose upon us is a fraud. Torture's truth, then, is that all of our promises to ourselves and …

Lawyers As Upholders Of Human Dignity (When They Aren't Busy Assaulting It), David Luban Jan 2005

Lawyers As Upholders Of Human Dignity (When They Aren't Busy Assaulting It), David Luban

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

David Luban argues in this lecture that the moral foundation of the lawyer's profession lies in the defense of human dignity-and the chief moral danger facing the profession arises when lawyers assault human dignity rather than defend it. The concept of human dignity has a rich philosophical tradition, with some philosophers identifying human dignity as a metaphysical property of individuals-a property such as having a soul, or possessing autonomy. Luban argues instead that human dignity is a relational property of "the dignifier" and "the dignified," emphasizing that assaulting human dignity humiliates the victim. Lawyers honor the human dignity of others …

Student Time Management: Student Characteristics Comparison Between Traditional Coursework And Extracurricular Activities, Andreew Ricke Jan 2005

Student Time Management: Student Characteristics Comparison Between Traditional Coursework And Extracurricular Activities, Andreew Ricke

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The trend that extracurricular activities and organizations are important to a college student is increasing. Many students are active in at least one activity or organization outside of class. These activities at the University of Missouri-Rolla range from design competition teams to professional societies, to non-varsity sports, and to special interest's groups Do students who have a high interest in education and learning find these activities more important than their coursework? What other traits could affect preference away from traditional coursework towards non-traditional extracurricular activities? Examination of selected traits could lead us to finding trends of preferences.

Reputation Management, Amy L. Bone Jan 2005

Reputation Management, Amy L. Bone

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

This study examined the idea that the importance of various characteristics to determining the quality of reputations differs for men and women in ways consistent with their mating-relevant concerns. Based on earlier work, I first wanted to identify dimensions along which reputations might be judged. One hundred students were asked to sort ninety-one characteristics of reputations into sets of characteristics they saw as similar to each other. A cluster analysis of the resulting co-occurrence matrix produced twenty-three distinct clusters. These clusters were used as the basis for creating reputation scales from participants' ratings of the importance of each characteristic to …

Change Agents And Change Agencies In Language Education: Implications For Langnet, Richard D. Brecht Jan 2005

Change Agents And Change Agencies In Language Education: Implications For Langnet, Richard D. Brecht

Russian Language Journal

Educational innovation is a richly satisfying enterprise, particularly in an age of rising demands and expanding technology. But unless the innovators have an explicit strategic plan and a dedicated system for diffusing their work, innovation is destined to have little or no impact on the teachers and learners for whom it is intended. That truth lies at the heart of the literature on the diffusion of innovation.

Perspectives On Curriculum Construction At The Postsecondary Level: Contexts, Approaches, Principles, Heidi Byrnes Jan 2005

Perspectives On Curriculum Construction At The Postsecondary Level: Contexts, Approaches, Principles, Heidi Byrnes

Russian Language Journal

A curriculum is an attempt, wrote Stenhouse three decades ago (1975, 4), to communicate the essential principles and features of an educational proposal in such a form that it is open to critical scrutiny and capable of effective translation into practice.

If one applies that notion of curriculum to the foreign language field in general, and to second- or foreign-language learning in U.S. colleges and universities in particular, one is immediately confronted with a dilemma: how can we speak of a foreign-language curriculum at the college level when a principled approach that is open to scrutiny and that builds on …

Religious Experience In The Age Of Digital Reproduction, Frederick Mark Gedicks, Roger Hendrix Jan 2005

Religious Experience In The Age Of Digital Reproduction, Frederick Mark Gedicks, Roger Hendrix

Faculty Scholarship

A religious experience is an extraordinary event that occurs against the backdrop of ordinary life, infusing that life with a meaning it would not otherwise have. Mass culture is now replete with portrayals of such experiences. Spiritually-themed television shows, movies, books, music, and fashion are now common and even popular. This is not necessarily good news for religion and religious experience. What mass culture portrays as sacred may be merely an imitation, resembling more the ubiquitous feel-good self-affirmance of popular psychology than authentic communion with the divine.

On the other hand, the appropriation and portrayal of religious experience by mass …
