Para-Verbal Avoidance During Public Speaking: The Relationship Between Self -Disclosure And Social Anxiety., Michael F. Detweiler Jan 2005

Para-Verbal Avoidance During Public Speaking: The Relationship Between Self -Disclosure And Social Anxiety., Michael F. Detweiler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Unlike dyadic conversation where the social burden of conversation can be shared, the quantity and quality of speech produced during a public speaking challenge is primarily dependent upon the speaker. This study examined whether differences in disclosure patterns reflect a form of subtle avoidance during public speaking challenges. Termed para-verbal avoidance, it was hypothesized individuals with increased anxiety would refrain from talking about themselves for fear of revealing potentially embarrassing personal information. Also, it was proposed individuals with increased anxiety would avoid discussing subjective information, as it can be debated by others and used as the basis for forming a …

What Is A Copy?, Jeffrey Malkan Jan 2005

What Is A Copy?, Jeffrey Malkan

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal

Copyright law encourages artistic and literary expression by policing copying and embracing the value of originality. To some degree, however, originality comes into focus only through the lens of copying, its unacknowledged, dark twin. The questions I ask in this inquiy are both "what" and "why "? What is the difference between a work and a copy? If there is a difference, why is the copy less worthy than the original? In my consideration of these questions, I draw upon a body of theory that attempts to explain the unequal status conferred by the art world on perceptually indiscernible objects-authentic …

Insurgency In Iraq: An Historical Perspective, Ian F.W. Beckett Dr. Jan 2005

Insurgency In Iraq: An Historical Perspective, Ian F.W. Beckett Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The continuing proliferation of insurgent organizations suggests that insurgency is still widely perceived as an effective means either of achieving power and influence, or of bringing a cause to the notice of an international or national community. The end of European decolonization and the collapse of the Soviet Union together removed the motivational impulse for much conflict between the late 1940s and the late 1980s. However, new ideological, political, and commercial imperatives are now encouraging intrastate conflict and insurgency amid the breakdown of the international bipolar political system and the emergence of identity politics and of many more nonstate actors. …

Complex Signal Function: Developing A Framework Of Testable Hypotheses, Eileen Hebets, Daniel R. Papaj Jan 2005

Complex Signal Function: Developing A Framework Of Testable Hypotheses, Eileen Hebets, Daniel R. Papaj

Eileen Hebets Publications

The basic building blocks of communication are signals, assembled in various sequences and combinations, and used in virtually all inter- and intra-specific interactions. While signal evolution has long been a focus of study, there has been a recent resurgence of interest and research in the complexity of animal displays. Much past research on signal evolution has focused on sensory specialists, or on single signals in isolation, but many animal displays involve complex signaling, or the combination of more than one signal or related component, often serially and overlapping, frequently across multiple sensory modalities. Here, we build a framework of functional …

A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of U.S. And Chinese Website Customers, Eleanor T. Loiacono, Huiping Lin

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Website quality has been given much attention as of late. In particular the factors that impact a consumer’s perception of website quality is of great interest. This paper takes a currently validated measure of business-to-consumer website quality (WebQualTM) and applies it to Chinese Web users in order to study the cross-cultural differences and similarities of U.S. and Chinese customers. Several cultural differences between U.S. and Chinese customers are revealed.

Non-Response Error Within Internet Surveys: A Cautionary Note, Carl S. Bozman, Donald E. Stem Jr Jan 2005

Non-Response Error Within Internet Surveys: A Cautionary Note, Carl S. Bozman, Donald E. Stem Jr

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

The use of the internet as a method to conduct survey research has expanded rapidly over the past decade. High speeds of response and lower expenses have driven this rapid growth. Relatively low response rates, however, suggest online surveys may be compromised by high levels of non-sampling error. This paper examines a major component of non-sampling error and the consequences that may be associated with internet survey non-response. Known population parameters are compared to point estimates from a census as well as a random sample of non-respondents in order to provide insight on the magnitude and direction of non- response …

Acceptance Of Wireless Internet Via Mobile Technology In China, June Lu, Chang Liu, Chun-Sheng Yu, James E. Yao

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

This study explores factors associated with the acceptance of Wireless Internet via Mobile Technology (WIMT) in China. The results indicate that the acceptance of WIMT is related to the factors of perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, social influences, wireless trust environment, and facilitating conditions. It provides diagnostic insight into how different factors influence user intention to accept WIMT in China, and thus help business develop strategy to prompt WIMT communications and mobile commerce there.

Analyzing The Effect Of Top Management Support On Information System (Is) Performance Across Organizations And Industries Using Hierarchical, Thawatchai Jitpaiboon, Sema A. Kalaian Jan 2005

Analyzing The Effect Of Top Management Support On Information System (Is) Performance Across Organizations And Industries Using Hierarchical, Thawatchai Jitpaiboon, Sema A. Kalaian

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Top management support has long been conceivable as an important factor for the success of IS projects. Due to the hierarchical nature of an organization, a cross-level interaction can occur among nested levels. Thus, using inappropriate statistical analysis can cause misleading results and lost of information. This study provides two contributions to the IS research. First, Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) was used to explain the cross-level interaction between organizational level and industry level. Second, unlike other studies focusing on an organizational level, this study considers top management support at the industry level and examines the mediating role of top management …

Information View Of Organization, Bob Travica Jan 2005

Information View Of Organization, Bob Travica

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

This article proposes an information view of organization that brings the information systems field closer to organization theory. Although voluminous bodies of literature have been developed within each of these disciplines and links between them do exist, their mutual informing is still insufficient. The proposed view of organization is intended to help convey results of information systems research to organizational scholars, while broadening theoretical horizons of the former. This article discusses the premises, conceptual framework, examples, and preliminary evidence of the information view of organization.

Applying Theoretical Frameworks To Explicate Physician Acceptance Of Computerized Physician Order Entry (Cpoe), David Rosenthal, Elaine Seeman, Shanan Gibson

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

This paper reports the findings of a pilot study undertaken to ascertain the feasibility of incorporating the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Taxonomy of Work Values into the explanation of physician technology acceptance of a new organizational technology – Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE). While Davis’s Technology Acceptance Model has received much empirical support, we posit that certain complexities associated with the physician population and the hospital environment warrant the inclusion of other theoretical models as a means of furthering our understanding of technology acceptance. Although preliminary in nature, this study finds support for the inclusion of both the …

The Psychological Capital Of Chinese Workers: Exploring The Relationship With Performance, Fred Luthans, Bruce Avolio, Fred Walumbwa, Weixing Li

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Everyone knows about China’s huge population and the fast-growing economy. Although macro-level sociological and economic analyses have given some attention to the linkage between the two, at the micro level, the relationship between human resources and, more specifically, psychological capital of Chinese workers and their performance has been largely ignored. Within the context of three factories (two private and one state-owned) in the People’s Republic of China, this exploratory study examined the relationship of a sample (n=422) of Chinese workers’ positive psychological capital states and their performance. Results indicated the workers’ positive states of hope, optimism, and resiliency, separately and …

Omega-3 Fatty Acid Consumption And Food Sources Differ Among Elderly Men Living In Coastal And Internal Regions Of Saudi Arabia, Khalid Al-Numair, Nancy M. Lewis, Sharon Evans

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Research suggests that omega-3 fatty acids (n-3 FAs) play an important role in reducing the risk of heart diseases. The objectives of the current study were to investigate the consumption and the food sources of n-3 FAs in two samples of elderly men living in different geographic locations (coastal and internal regions) of Saudi Arabia. Sixty men from each of the coastal and the internal regions provided a 24-hour recall and 2-day food record and a food frequency questionnaire. Food Processor Plus computer program software (ESHA Version 0.7; Salem, Oregon, 2002) was used to analyze the dietary intake. The intake …

Social Marketing Applications And Transportation Demand Management: An Information Instrument For The 21st Century, Enda Mcgovern

WCBT Faculty Publications

Concern has been expressed by planners and policy-makers that the “add capacity” strategy used in building more roads to resolve traffic-induced problems is no longer a feasible option. This article explores private transport behavior in understanding how users can be persuaded to adopt a more blended approach (i.e., integrating car, public transportation, and alternative modes on a daily basis). The research methodology adopted focus groups and travel diaries in presenting a number of social marketing message appeals aimed at inducing a change in participants’ travel behaviors. While weaknesses are identified in the social marketing materials, this research concludes that social …
