Using Working Memory Interference Tasks To Test For Verbal And Spatial Route Learning Strategies, Ian Reagan Oct 2005

Using Working Memory Interference Tasks To Test For Verbal And Spatial Route Learning Strategies, Ian Reagan

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Research indicates considerable individual variability exists on a host of tasks that measure navigational ability. This experiment examined the hypothesis that some individuals use verbal and others spatial processing to learn routes. A survey was used to categorize individuals into good or poor sense of direction (GSD or PSD) groups. Then participants learned two routes in a virtual setting; they learned one while engaged in spatial tapping and one while engaged in articulatory suppression. The experimenter led participants through the route once. Participants then traversed the route from memory. During the spatial tapping condition, participants in the GSD group were …

Natural Allies? Regional Security In Asia And Prospects For Indo-American Strategic Cooperation, Stephen J. Blank Dr. Oct 2005

Natural Allies? Regional Security In Asia And Prospects For Indo-American Strategic Cooperation, Stephen J. Blank Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

One of the hallmarks of the two Bush administrations' foreign and defense policies has been a growing rapprochement with India. Indeed, in June 2005 the U.S. Government signed a defense agreement with that country. In part, this rapprochement is driven by and coincides with India's increasingly visible role as a major Asian power. This monograph seeks to illuminate India's rising power and capabilities with regard to the key regions on its periphery: the Persian Gulf, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia. The author also considers the major issues pertaining to India's bilateral defense agenda with the United States. By revealing the …

Chinese National Security: Decisionmaking Under Stress, Andrew Scobell Dr., Larry M. Wortzel Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

This volume represents the fruits of a conference held at the U.S. Army War College in September 2005 on the theme of "Chinese Crisis Management." One of the major debates that emerged among participants was whether all the case studies under examination constituted crises in the eyes of China's leaders. The consensus was that not all of those incidents were perceived as crises. As a result the rubric of "decision making under stress" was adopted as presenters revised their papers for publication.

Assessment And Evaluation Of The Nutritional Status Of The Elderly Using 2 Different Instruments, Ozge Kucukerdonmez, Eda Koksal, Neslisah Rakicioglu, Gulden Pekcan

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: The elderly population continues to increase in most countries and inadequate nutrition is a common problem affecting their functional and physical status. Therefore, we should periodically assess the nutritional status of the elderly using practical methods. Our study objectives are to assess the nutritional status of the elderly using 2 different methods: Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and Nutritional Screening Initiative Checklist (NSIC), and to evaluate the consistency of the methods. METHODS: We carried out a cross-sectional study between February 2003 and March 2004. We included a total of 1,564 elderly volunteers living in Ankara, Turkey, with median (± inter …

OBJECTIVE: Studies about health inequalities among adolescents have been conducted principally in developed countries. Although adolescents represent 15% of the Mexican population, no studies are available in this specific age group on health inequalities. In this study, we assess differences in the perception of morbidity severity among adolescent students, as well as their association with selected socioeconomic characteristics. METHODS: We carried out a cross-sectional study (base-line of a longitudinal study of adolescent9s health) in 1999. Participants were Mexican adolescents (n=12769) aged 12-19 years, attending to public schools selected through of multistage sampling method. We measured the health status through a …

We present a case of inferior conjunction in a rare type of conjoined twins, dicephalus in a male fetus. The male fetus was born to a 24-year-old, gravida 2, and para 0, who had medical abortion at 15 weeks of gestation due to anencephaly with meningoencephalocele revealed by ultrasound examination. The fetus was born with 2 anencephalic heads with a bifurcation of the vertebral column and presence of 2 spinal cords. The other viscera and limbs were normal in number and location as for a male singleton. This case illustrates the relationship between conjoined twining, and neural tube defect more …

An Analysis Of The Effects On Parties' Unionization Decisions Of The Choice Of Union Representation Procedure: The Strategic Dynamic Certification Model, Sara Slinn Oct 2005

An Analysis Of The Effects On Parties' Unionization Decisions Of The Choice Of Union Representation Procedure: The Strategic Dynamic Certification Model, Sara Slinn

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article proposes a new theoretical framework-the strategic dynamic certification model-to explain how union certification processes operate. Statutory certification procedures are not neutral. Instead, they produce particular incentives, disincentives, and opportunities for employers, unions, and employees, and these affect the outcomes of the procedure. Empirical evidence confirms this model's ability to analyze the certification process and the outcomes of unionization attempts. In particular, this model explains why the change from a card-check to a mandatory representation vote encourages unlawful employer conduct, enhances the effectiveness of union avoidance activities, and deters employee participation in the unionization decision. The article concludes that, …

Vincentian Leadership—Advocating For Justice, Craig B. Mousin Oct 2005

Vincentian Leadership—Advocating For Justice, Craig B. Mousin

Vincentian Studies

DePaul University employs thousands of people. As Craig Mousin writes, “To do justice to those we seek to serve necessitates that we do justice to those who engage in our work.” He explores “the centrality of work to life and mission” (including the personal and individual missions employees have for themselves) and what justice in the workplace means. He “examine[s] historical concepts of justice to understand what an advocate of justice works toward in a Vincentian institution.” Mousin also discusses how Vincentian leadership principles and “understandings of justice” should be applied in employment situations, especially when the law might advise …

Adverse Possession Of Identity: Radical Theory, Conventional Practice, Jessica A. Clarke Oct 2005

Adverse Possession Of Identity: Radical Theory, Conventional Practice, Jessica A. Clarke

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This Article examines the conditions under which acting as if one has a particular legal status is sufficient to secure that status in the eyes of the law. Legal determinations of common-law marriage, functional parenthood, and racial identity share striking similarities to adverse possession law – these doctrines confer legal status on those who are merely acting as if they have that legal status. In each case, the elements of a legal claim are strikingly similar: physical proximity, notoriety and publicity, a claim of right, consistent and continuous behavior, and public acquiescence. The reason public performance is critical is that …

It's Not Easy Being A Cast Iron Bitch: Sexual Difference And The Female Action Hero, Diana Dominguez Oct 2005

It's Not Easy Being A Cast Iron Bitch: Sexual Difference And The Female Action Hero, Diana Dominguez

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Lt. Ellen Ripley of the Alien series of films, Sarah Connor of the Terminator series, and Lindsey Brigman of The Abyss are examples of a special category of female role in Hollywood – the female action hero. To varying degrees of success, the three characters mentioned above defy the principal dilemma filmmakers seem to have in creating a character that can reconcile the presumably mutually exclusive aspects of cast iron bitch and traditional patriarchal societal views of femininity. Ripley, Connor, and Brigman infiltrate the male-dominated category of the action hero, but they are not a direct feminine challenge to the …

The Trouble With Trills: Gender And Consciousness In Star Trek, Susan J. Wolfe Oct 2005

The Trouble With Trills: Gender And Consciousness In Star Trek, Susan J. Wolfe

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

The Star Trek series, which have been both praised for radical inclusiveness and criticized for their neo-conservative agendas, de-essentialize identity, gender, and sexual orientation through their depictions of the Trill, an alien race in which humanoids join with symbionts, slug-like creatures each of which lives in the abdominal cavity of its host, with whom it then shares a single fused consciousness. Hosts are selected independently of their sex, so that a symbiont dwells alternatively inside males and females; each new host, as well as the symbiont, is heir to the memories of all previous hosts.

The notions of unified selves …

On Lillian Robinson’S Wonder Women: Feminisms And Superheroes, Carlos Hernandez Oct 2005

On Lillian Robinson’S Wonder Women: Feminisms And Superheroes, Carlos Hernandez

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Sure, we all know that one of the primary functions of comic books is to titillate the proto-patriarchal penises of 12-year-old boys. But might this all-American art form have more to offer women than wedgie-prone bikini bottoms and cleavage from the Planet of the Fembots? According to Lillian Robinson’s Wonder Women, the answer is “Yes, but ....” The “Yes” part comes primarily, and foundationally, through the original Wonder Woman comics of the 40s, which told a story that to this day remains almost unheard-of in comic books: the story of a fully-realized female protagonist. For Robinson, the …

Insecure Retirement Income, Wrongful Plan Administration And Other Employee Benefits Woes — Evaluating Erisa At Age Thirty, Maria O'Brien

Faculty Scholarship

Book Review of The Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974: A Political History by James A. Wooten.

Goeres and the many other recent cases like it10 are remarkable after Mertens and Great West, both for the persistence of the ERISA plaintiff's bar in trying to find ways to obtain make-whole relief in egregious cases and for the continued refusal of Congress to amend ERISA to provide adequate make-whole remedies."11 A patently unjust and inefficient legal regime continues to replicate itself again and again. Conduct that clearly constitutes breach of fiduciary duty, negligent plan administration or worse, …

Toward A Cleaner Whiteness: New Racial Identities, David Ingram Oct 2005

Toward A Cleaner Whiteness: New Racial Identities, David Ingram

Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The article re-examines racial and ethnic identity within the context of pedagogical attempts to instill a positive white identity in white students who are conscious of the history of white racism and white privilege. The paper draws heavily from whiteness studies and developmental cognitive science in arguing (against Henry Giroux and Stuart Hall) that a positive notion of white identity, however postmodern its construction, is an oxymoron, since whiteness designates less a cultural/ethnic ethos and meaningful way of life than a pathological structure of privilege and narrowminded cognitive habitus.

Revisiting Violence In The Godfather: The Ambiguous Space Of The Victimage Model, Paul Graham Oct 2005

Revisiting Violence In The Godfather: The Ambiguous Space Of The Victimage Model, Paul Graham

Journal of Religion & Film

This article closely revisits and praises the long, contemplative scenes and the fast contrapuntal cutting of the violence displayed in The Godfather to show how the movie's superior editing and filming style help to overturn its own violent message. Thus, the film, however cynically, completes Girard's the victimage model without actually immolating its would-be scapegoat. By inhabiting the deconstructive "space” of the scapegoating motif, the film's bloody scenes undercut themselves and help to enact a message against the violence within the ideologies of the American Dream, capitalist competition, or any other factor that may serve to mitigate Michael Corleone's actions.

I, Robot: You Gotta Have Heart, Richard C. Trussell Oct 2005

I, Robot: You Gotta Have Heart, Richard C. Trussell

Journal of Religion & Film

I Robot is a rousing sci-fi action story which explores Artificial Intelligence and its consequences. Deep philosophical themes abound, such as existential crisis and identity-defining choice, the nature of personhood, purpose in life, cognition and mental interpretive structures, faith vs. reason, divine command theory, and freedom vs. determinism. It also brims with biblical symbolism, including the fall, messianic figures, the exodus from bondage, theophany, ambiguity of the feminine, sacrificial death and the trinity. Finally it is about personal and collective redemption, making a clear statement about the heart and emotions as the seat of will, faith, and morality.
