Foreword--Reflections On Judging: A Discussion Following The Release Of The Blackmun Papers , Martha Dragich, Christina E. Wells

Faculty Publications

Justice Blackmun's papers were opened to the public on March 4, 2004, the fifth anniversary of his death. Held in the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress, the collection includes over half a million items, many handwritten by Justice Blackmun. Anyone can read them. For legal scholars, this kind of research can only be described as exhilarating and many of the articles in this symposium draw on research from Justice Blackmun's papers. For the public, the release comes at a time when the interest in judges is particularly acute.

Comparison Of The Academic Achievement Of First-Year Female Honors Program And Non-Honors Program Engineering Students, Gayle Hartleroad Oct 2005

Comparison Of The Academic Achievement Of First-Year Female Honors Program And Non-Honors Program Engineering Students, Gayle Hartleroad

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

The purpose of this study was to compare the academic achievement of first-year female engineering students based on participation, or lack thereof, in the honors program. A single research question was developed for this study: “Is there a significant difference in academic achievement of first-year female engineering Honors Program students and non-honors program students?” The problem for this study was that many students in the Freshman Engineering program at Purdue University believed that participation in an honors program damaged students’ grade point averages with its challenging curriculum. This was especially true for beginning female students entering a traditionally male-dominated career …

Honors: When Value-Added Is Really Added Value, Jacqueline Kelleher

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

Sometimes I look at the responsibilities and demands placed on me in my current position and cannot believe I haven’t cracked up yet. In this era of accountability and “show me the data,” institutional assessment directors like me are constantly bombarded with challenges that require quick, critical, divergent thinking, analytical reasoning, effective speaking, and, to some extent, creative writing. As both a professor and administrator at a state university, I live and breathe producing evidence that we as an institution are having an impact on student learning. When I was growing up, I never imagined I would end up being …

“What Is An Honors Student?”, Jay Freyman Oct 2005

“What Is An Honors Student?”, Jay Freyman

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

It is first necessary to recognize the distinction between the questions “What is an honors student?” or better “What are the characteristics of an honors student?” and “How do you recognize a student with those characteristics?” The first of these two questions is easier to approach since it is more a matter of prescription than of description, a presentation of an ideal rather than a recognition of an actual state. We can all list characteristics which we would like or expect those special students to have who are worthy in our estimation of the designation “honors.” These expectations, I submit, …

Family Predictors Of Well-Functioning Midwestern Adolescents, Douglas A. Abbott, Scott Hall, William Meredith Oct 2005

Family Predictors Of Well-Functioning Midwestern Adolescents, Douglas A. Abbott, Scott Hall, William Meredith

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The purpose of our project was to investigate well-functioning adolescents to identify familial influences that may account for their positive developmental outcomes and healthy life choices. A family systems perspective was used to conceptualize this project. More than 300 teenagers were surveyed about family influences on adolescent outcomes. Results indicated that teen religiosity, parental warmth, parental monitoring, and a low occurrence of stressful life events were related to teen depression, participation in risky behaviors, and parental-teen conflict. General conclusions were drawn about the importance of the family environment on teen behavior and the usefulness of a systems point of view …

Strategies For Advocacy In Higher Education, Marie Byrd-Blake, Linda Hampton Wesson Oct 2005

Strategies For Advocacy In Higher Education, Marie Byrd-Blake, Linda Hampton Wesson

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

The feminist phase theory (Tetreault, 1985) was used to examine the cultural patterns embedded in a department of a large, urban university, to classify how the faculty in the department perceived women, and to examine how our own behavior as two newly hired associate and assistant professors contributed or did not contribute to these patterns of behavior. Three years of field notes, anecdotal records, transcriptions of meetings, interviews, and student comments were categorized to develop experienced-derived strategies. These strategies encourage women in higher education to: (a) recognize their own enmeshment in patriarchal practices; (b) disrupt these practices through their own …

Review Of 5 Leadership Essentials For Women: Developing Your Ability To Make Things Happen Compiler Lisa Clark, Clarissa M. Craig

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Because much of the scholarship on leadership has been constructed using male norms (Nidiffer, 2001), there is added attraction when the essentials of successful leadership are targeted for women. 5 Leadership Essentials for Women: Developing Your Ability to Make Things Happen addresses five leadership skills that, according to the "compiler" [sic] Linda Clark, are designed with women's needs in mind. The leadership essentials explored are communication, relationship essentials, time management, group building, and conflict management.

Shining Lonely Stars? Career Patterns Of Rural Texas Female Administrators, Dawn C. Wallin

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

This paper stems from research that examined the impact of the rural context upon the career patterns of women educational administrators in rural public school districts in the state of Texas. The study examined two pertinent issues for women in rural education: (a) the nature of rural communities and its relationship to female career paths in educational administration, and (b) barriers and supports faced by female administrators in the rural context. The purpose of this paper will be to outline the findings of the study in relation to the emergent issues for rural female administrators.

Frame-Shifting In Humor And Irony, L. David Ritchie Oct 2005

Frame-Shifting In Humor And Irony, L. David Ritchie

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

Coulson's (2001) analysis of humor as "frame-shifting" is extended to irony and compared to other current theories of humor and irony, including Giora's (2003) graded salience model. It is argued that the effects of humor and irony often depend on a subversive relationship between the initial and alternative frames, which adds to both cognitive and social meaning; understanding these effects requires consideration of the expansion of common ground (Clark, 1996) and relevance effects (Sperber & Wilson, 1986) triggered by the shift from a culturally licensed to a subversive frame. Reanalysis of several examples from recent studies in the light of …

Good Morning, Africa! (Dreams And Identity In Morocco), Chantal James Oct 2005

Good Morning, Africa! (Dreams And Identity In Morocco), Chantal James

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This is an exploration of identity using dreams in the Moroccan context. I formally spoke to around twenty-five Moroccans for my research and spoke briefly or casually about the subject of dreams with many more, almost everyone I became friendly with. I give no personal information about the people who spoke to me without their consent, and I give all credit where it’s due, I hope. I set out from Rabat on the 10:30 train to Marrakesh, to spend my three weeks there. I kept a copy of Dreams, a collected works of Jung, by my side. I kept copious …

A Small Town Drug Problem: The Socio-Economy Of Malindi’S Heroin-Using Population, Greg St. Arnold Oct 2005

A Small Town Drug Problem: The Socio-Economy Of Malindi’S Heroin-Using Population, Greg St. Arnold

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Research was conducted in Malindi focusing on the social and economic characteristics of heroin-users. A survey of users’ ages, employment, education level, future ambitions, family status, and attitudes towards rehabilitation was undertaken with the assistance of The Omari Project, a local non-governmental organization specializing in rehabilitation services. The findings reveal a community mired in the throes of poverty and unemployment, which exacerbates the community’s drug problem. Recommendations are offered suggesting how best to meet the economic and social challenges presented by the heroin-using community.

“Oh Uncle Pema!” The Role Of Musical Agency In The Creation Of A Modern Tibetan Identity, Tracy Ellwanger Oct 2005

“Oh Uncle Pema!” The Role Of Musical Agency In The Creation Of A Modern Tibetan Identity, Tracy Ellwanger

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

“Aku Pema,” a widely popular song in both Tibet and exile, is a useful vehicle for camparing the agency of Tibetan musicians and audiences, as they interact with dominating cultures (Chinese, Hindi, and Western) and official paradigms (espoused by the Chinese government and the Tibetan government-in-exile). After examining the role and implications of “Aku Pema” as a “political” song in both locales, I will look at notions of modernity and tradition, especially in the context of the growing sinocization of Tibetan culture in Tibet and the resulting exile views of pure versus impure Tibetan music.

At the heart of this …

Facing Reality: The Story Of Icaro Amorim, Nicole Vengrove Oct 2005

Facing Reality: The Story Of Icaro Amorim, Nicole Vengrove

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The harsh struggles and lack of basic necessities, which plague many low-income neighborhoods in Northeastern Brazil negatively impact children’s physical and emotional development. My research follows a 16 year-old boy, Icaro Amorim, who lives in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Fortaleza, Ceara, located in the Northeastern region of Brazil. Despite his hard life where food is never a guarantee, Icaro possesses a social awareness that motivates him to improve the life of his family and his community. This social consciousness is played out in Casa de Cultura, a project which Icaro and his peers started in their community of …

The Trinitarian Dna Of Christian Worship: Perennial Themes In Recent Theological Literature, John Witvliet Oct 2005

The Trinitarian Dna Of Christian Worship: Perennial Themes In Recent Theological Literature, John Witvliet

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Trinitarian theology has considerable implications for Christian worship. On the assumption that doctrine and liturgy are inextricably intertwined, my interest is to isolate and clarify the links between the doctrine of the Trinity and the theology and practice of worship, and thereby to explore the basic "grammar" or "DNA" of Trinitarian worship. My procedure will be to identify briefly five unique though inter-related themes, five "kinds of Trinitarian discourse," and to explore the resonances or corollaries of those themes in work on the theology and practice of liturgy. By choosing to offer an overview, my goal is to present this …
