Is The Number Of Sick Persons In A Cohort Constant Over Time?, Paula Diehr, Ann Derleth, Anne Newman, Liming Cai

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Objectives: To estimate the number of persons in a cohort who are sick, over time.

Methods: We calculated the number of sick persons in the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS), a cohort study of older adults followed up to 14 years, using eight definitions of “healthy” and “sick”. We projected the number in each health state over time for a birth cohort.

Results: The number of sick persons in CHS was approximately constant for 14 years, for all definitions of “sick”. The estimated number of sick persons in the birth cohort was approximately constant from ages 55-75, after which it decreased. …

Translating The Lesbian Writer : Pierre Loüys, Natalie Clifford Barney, And "Girls Of The Future Society", Tama L. Engelking

World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

When Pierre Louÿs published his Chansons de Bilitis in 1894, he dedicated the volume of prose poems, which he claimed to have translated from the Greek, to "Young Girls of the Future Society." He portrayed his Bilitis as a contemporary of Sappho's whose life story, described in the three parts of the Chansons, takes her from deflowered shepherdess, to lesbian lover, to courtesan. More than a literary hoax or a collection of erotic poems, his Bilitis songs became the inspiration for a young Sapphic writer who embodied those girls of the future to whom Louÿs had dedicated his work, Natalie …

Medicaid's Role In Treating Children In Military Families, Peter Shin, Sara J. Rosenbaum, D. Richard Mauery

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

This analysis examines Medicaid's role in meeting the health care needs of children in military families who receive their health insurance coverage through TRICARE. TRICARE is the Department of Defense's worldwide health insurance program for active duty and retired military service members and their families. The 2000-2002 National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs, as well as a series of semi-structured telephone interviews, were used to assess Medicaid's role as a supplemental insurer for military children with special health care needs (CSHCN).

The Porter Five-Forces Industry Analysis Framework For Religious Nonprofits: A Conceptual Analysis, Michael E. Cafferky Oct 2005

The Porter Five-Forces Industry Analysis Framework For Religious Nonprofits: A Conceptual Analysis, Michael E. Cafferky

Faculty Works

Goold (1997) has argued that the Porter (1980) five-forces framework for industry analysis is not applicable to nonprofits. In light of recent essays (e.g. Miller, 2002) as well as literature from the world of religious nonprofit organizations and organization theory, the Porter framework is analyzed through a review of representative literature. The religious nonprofit arena was chosen for this conceptual analysis based on an assumed key difference between religious nonprofits and for-profit firms: the stronger influence that mission has in strategy formulation compared with the influence of the external environment. Implications for further research are suggested.

Afterschool Matters

From Promise to Participation: Afterschool Programs through the Lens of Socio-Cultural Learning Theory
By Meredith I. Honig and Morva A. McDonald
Studies of the effects of afterschool programs on student learning have yielded equivocal findings. This paper argues that such findings stem from weak conceptualizations of the relationship between afterschool programming and learning. The authors use socio-cultural learning theory to reveal specific dimensions of afterschool programs that have positive impact on learning, drawing on almost 200 documents from the afterschool literature to substantiate and elaborate these dimensions. Findings illuminate why afterschool programs that provide "more school after school" significantly limit …

Believing Scholars: Ten Catholic Intellectuals, James L. Heft S.M.

Religion

How do Catholic intellectuals draw on faith in their work? And how does their work as scholars influence their lives as people of faith?

For more than a generation, the University of Dayton has invited a prominent Catholic intellectual to present the annual Marianist Award Lecture on the general theme of the encounter of faith and profession. Over the years, the lectures have become central to the Catholic conversation about church, culture, and society.

In this book, ten leading figures explore the connections in their own lives between the private realms of faith and their public calling as teachers, scholars, …

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The World Wide Web (WWW) poses a distinct capability to offer interventions tailored to the individual’s characteristics. To fine tune the tailoring process, studies are needed to explore how Internet accessibility and usage are related to demographic, psychosocial, behavioral, and other health related characteristics. This study was based on a cross-sectional survey conducted on 2373 7th grade students of various ethnic groups in Southern California. Measures of Internet use included Internet use at school or at home, Email use, chat-room use, and Internet favoring. Logistic regressions were conducted to assess the associations between Internet uses with selected demographic, psychosocial, behavioral …

History And Society: Fact, Fiction And Reform In The Serbian Education System, Valerie Ullrich Oct 2005

History And Society: Fact, Fiction And Reform In The Serbian Education System, Valerie Ullrich

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

History instruction is a means of disseminating political and cultural “truth” in societies all over the world. History occupies only a small space in the educational schemes that socialize and politicize children to their societies, but it could be argued that it plays a disproportionate role in these processes. In societies with contentious historical records and/or histories of conflict, it is particularly important to examine the role that history instruction does in fact play, as it can have positive or disastrous consequences over the long term. Serbian society provides one example of the potential effects of incomplete, politically influenced historical …

The “Extreme Makeover” Effect Of Law School: Students Being Transformed By Stories, Cassandra Sharp Oct 2005

The “Extreme Makeover” Effect Of Law School: Students Being Transformed By Stories, Cassandra Sharp

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

The relationship between law and popular culture has caused great interest among scholars over the years. It is a field that invites the merging of disciplinary boundaries and allows for plurality in the ways that law can be viewed. This paper seeks to view this relationship from the vantage point of the first-year law student and to explore the representation and transformation of meaning about law and lawyering within the social and academic context of law school. Situated within the expanding scholarship on law and popular culture, this paper examines how the image of the lawyer is constructed and interpreted …

The Failure Of The International Laws Of War And The Role Of Art And Story-Telling As A Self-Help Remedy For Restorative Justice, Susan Tiefenbrun Oct 2005

The Failure Of The International Laws Of War And The Role Of Art And Story-Telling As A Self-Help Remedy For Restorative Justice, Susan Tiefenbrun

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This Article asks several questions that seem particularly relevant in view of the current state of war that our peace-loving society is engaged in today. What is the role of the laws and customs of war if the warriors don't play by the rules? What is the role of art and music during and after the commission of atrocities? Can art prevent further atrocities, assuage victims of catastrophic events, inspire the collective conscience of perpetrators, and protect victims from the reality of pain caused by war and the violations of the international laws of armed combat? Can a book or …

Lysistrata, Women, & War: International Law’S Treatment Of Women In Conflict And Post-Conflict Situations, Emma Lindsay Oct 2005

Lysistrata, Women, & War: International Law’S Treatment Of Women In Conflict And Post-Conflict Situations, Emma Lindsay

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

In Part II, the Author considers the synergies between law (particularly international law), literature, and feminism. In Part III, the Author examines the play and outline the binary oppositions that pervade Aristophanes's text: war/peace, public/private, and masculine/ feminine. The Author then considers the binary oppositions in more detail, by investigating how they are reflected in the position of women in contemporary violent conflicts. Using a single example to explore each opposition, the Author looks at violence against women, women's political participation, and social and economic rights to suggest the unreality of the oppositions for women. In so doing, she seeks …
