Imaginary Relish And Exquisite Torture: The Elaborated Intrusion Theory Of Desire, David J. Kavanagh, Jackie Andrade, Jon May Jan 2005

Imaginary Relish And Exquisite Torture: The Elaborated Intrusion Theory Of Desire, David J. Kavanagh, Jackie Andrade, Jon May

School of Psychology

The authors argue that human desire involves conscious cognition that has strong affective connotation and is potentially involved in the determination of appetitive behavior rather than being epiphenomenal to it. Intrusive thoughts about appetitive targets are triggered automatically by external or physiological cues and by cognitive associates. When intrusions elicit significant pleasure or relief, cognitive elaboration usually ensues. Elaboration competes with concurrent cognitive tasks through retrieval of target-related information and its retention in working memory. Sensory images are especially important products of intrusion and elaboration because they simulate the sensory and emotional qualities of target acquisition. Desire images are momentarily …

Four Questions On Critical Race Praxis: Lessons From Two Young Lives In Indian Country, Christine Zuni Cruz Jan 2005

Four Questions On Critical Race Praxis: Lessons From Two Young Lives In Indian Country, Christine Zuni Cruz

Faculty Scholarship

The Critical Race Lawyering Symposium in New York City brings me from Albuquerque, New Mexico. As I travel the day before the symposium, I reflect on the amount of time it will take. I leave Albuquerque at 8:23 a.m. and I am scheduled to arrive in New York City at 4:05 p.m., via Chicago. Given the two-hour time difference between the East Coast and the Rocky Mountain regions, I begin my day boarding the plane as the sun is rising in the morning sky and end it at my destination where the sun is setting. Even in this day and …

Weak Links And Scene Cliques In Shakespeare's Plays, M Hudson, J Stiller Jan 2005

Weak Links And Scene Cliques In Shakespeare's Plays, M Hudson, J Stiller

School of Psychology

Forms of narrative such as drama allow for the transmission of information to large audiences. The drama therefore has to contain structural elements that are easily accessible to the viewer. The structures of 10 plays by William Shakespeare were studied and shown to exhibit small world properties, in that any node (character) in a network is connected to any other node by only a few intermediate steps. It is suggested that the number of characters that are present within each scene reflect similar numbers to those of observed human support cliques. This might reflect possible cognitive limits, as when there …

Fuzzy And Neutrosophic Analysis Of Women With Hiv/Aids, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy Jan 2005

Fuzzy And Neutrosophic Analysis Of Women With Hiv/Aids, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Fuzzy theory is one of the best tools to analyze data, when the data under study is an unsupervised one, involving uncertainty coupled with imprecision. However, fuzzy theory cannot cater to analyzing the data involved with indeterminacy. The only tool that can involve itself with indeterminacy is the neutrosophic model. Neutrosophic models are used in the analysis of the socio-economic problems of HIV/AIDS infected women patients living in rural Tamil Nadu. Most of these women are uneducated and live in utter poverty. Till they became seriously ill they worked as daily wagers. When these women got admitted in the hospital …

“Day in and day out we take pride in claiming that India has a 5000 year old civilization. But the way Dalits and those suppressed are being treated by the people who wield power and authority speaks volumes for the degradations of our moral structure and civilized standards.” Ex-President of India, the late K. R. Narayanan The New Indian Express, Saturday, 12 Nov. 2005 K.R.Narayanan was a lauded hero and a distinguished victim of his Dalit background. Even in an international platform when he was on an official visit to Paris, the media headlines blazed, ‘An Untouchable at Elysee’. He …

The Gift Of Enron: An Opportunity To Talk About Capitalism, Equality And The Promise Of A North American Charter Of Fundamental Rights, Laura Spitz Jan 2005

The Gift Of Enron: An Opportunity To Talk About Capitalism, Equality And The Promise Of A North American Charter Of Fundamental Rights, Laura Spitz

Faculty Scholarship

In this Article, Enron is positioned as a promising opening in the debate about economic globalization and the regulation of advanced capitalism in North America. As a contribution to that debate, the author suggests that there are two aspects of advanced capitalism which call for supranational response and regulation. First, advanced capitalism is increasingly transnational (as distinct from international and intranational). This brings unique regulatory challenges to the fore. Second the regulation of advanced capitalism can be usefully understood as a substantive equality issue (as that concept in understood in Canadian law). In the past, this aspect of capitalism-thef act …

Twenty Techniques For Teaching With Case Studies, Mary R. Sudzina Jan 2005

Twenty Techniques For Teaching With Case Studies, Mary R. Sudzina

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Problem-based learning and teaching with case studies are instructional approaches that are increasingly being applied in a variety of disciplines, such as business, law, medicine, and education. Instructors who have experienced traditional, teacher-centered instruction are often looking for ways to successfully integrate case studies, a constructivist, student-centered approach to teaching and learning, into their courses. This paper summarizes a workshop presented at the 2004 MWERA Annual Meeting. That workshop featured a proven 5-step process for case analysis, 20 techniques for facilitating case discussions, and a video of an actual case discussion in progress in which those techniques were demonstrated and …
