An Exploratory Cross-Cultural Investigation Of The Organisational Strategies Employed To Prevent And Ameliorate Workplace Bullying In University Settings, Dragana Krestelica

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Workplaces abound in conflict. Individuals within organisations are therefore vulnerable to a wide range of intimidating interactional tactics. These tactics can have an extremely negative impact upon individual workers and upon subsequent organisational performance. Consequentially, the diverse forms of organisational social harassment, and specifically bullying, place a large financial burden upon both organisations and nations. Therefore, the identification of strategies used to prevent and ameliorate workplace bullying and an examination that highlights their comparative success or failure is of great importance for all employers, employees and government. This study focuses upon those strategies used to prevent and ameliorate such workplace …

The Educational Beliefs Of A Group Of University Teachers And Their Students: Identification, Exploration And Comparison, Maria T. Northcote

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The quality of teaching and learning in tertiary education contexts is influenced by many factors including the educational beliefs of the university teachers and students who teach and learn in such contexts. Most belief research in the tertiary education sector has, to date, reported on the teaching or learning beliefs of just teachers or the teaching or learning beliefs of just students. Much less research has explored the connections between the educational beliefs of these two groups. This research has aimed to extend the parameters of previous research by investigating the point of intersection between the educational beliefs of a …

Like Falling Off A Log: Rubato In Chopin's Prelude In Ab Major (Op. 28, No. 17), William Rothstein

Publications and Research

Rubato is widely regarded as a purely intuitive art. While it may be true that most performers rely solely on intuition for their rubato, a conscious approach may also be helpful. For the teacher of “analysis for performers,” a conscious approach is essential if rubato is to be discussed at all.

Rubato is a difficult subject to theorize. The late David Epstein made an admirable attempt in his book Shaping Time, using recordings by performers he admired to construct quantitative models. My approach here will be qualitative rather than quantitative, and introspective rather than empirical. Unlike Epstein, I will …

Polyaniline Nanotubes: Catalysis And Their Conversion To Carbon Nanotubes, Stephen Paquette Jan 2005

Polyaniline Nanotubes: Catalysis And Their Conversion To Carbon Nanotubes, Stephen Paquette

Theses

Polyaniline nanotubes, first synthesized by Parasarathy and Martin in 1994, have been studied extensively in recent years.[1] The study of these nanodimensional particles has been oriented mostly toward an attempt to understand the electrical and magnetic properties surrounding these semi-one dimensional objects and also toward applications for their utilization.[2] The ability to produce these nano-particles chemically but, without a template was first discovered by Wan in 1999.[3] The use of chemical oxidants often produces undesirable byproducts during the reaction. Therefore, we have used this as a launching point in order to first mirror this template-less synthesis in our lab and …

Automated Extraction Of Disease-Gene Relationships From Medline, Jennifer R. Paine Jan 2005

Automated Extraction Of Disease-Gene Relationships From Medline, Jennifer R. Paine

Theses

The increasing amount of scientific information available to researchers in the form of biomedical literature is beginning to bring about a need for the development of tools to extract information automatically from these sources. One segment of information of particular interest to researchers is the linkage information between genes and diseases. These linkages can help researchers interpret large-scale genomics studies as well as make logical connections between gene expression levels and certain phenotypes. To make the finding and collecting of this information practical, automated methods of information extraction are required. In this paper, I propose a method for the automated …

Spectra: Secure Power Efficient Clustered Topology Routing Algorithm, Waqaas Siddiqui Jan 2005

Spectra: Secure Power Efficient Clustered Topology Routing Algorithm, Waqaas Siddiqui

Theses

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have emerged as one of the hottest fields today due to their low-cost, self-organizing behavior, sensing ability in harsh environments, and their large application scope. One of the most challenging topics in WSNs is security. In some applications it is critical to provide confidentiality and authentication in order to prevent information from being compromised. However, providing key management for confidentiality and authentication is difficult due to the ad hoc nature, intermittent connectivity, and resource limitations of the network. Though traditional public keybased security protocols do exist, they need large memory bandwidths and complex algorithms, and are …

Belief In A Just World, School Stress And Academic Success, Elizabeth A. Hepworth Jan 2005

Belief In A Just World, School Stress And Academic Success, Elizabeth A. Hepworth

Theses

Belief in a just world, a construct first introduced by Lerner (1978), has been the topic of psychological research for the past forty years (Lerner, 1965; Rubin & Peplau, 1973; Tomaka & Blascovich, 1994; Dalbert, 1999; Hafer, 2000; Furnham, 2003). Much of the research conducted on the belief in a just world focused on its cognitive use as a protective mechanism. For example, Belief in a Just World (BJW) has been positively correlated with helping behavior (Beirhoff, 2002), commitment to long range goals (Hafer, 2000), positive well-being (Dalbert, 2000), and negatively associated with stress (Takoma & Blascovich, 1994). In the …

Analytical Investigations Of Modified Active Remote Dynamic Vibration Absorbers, Piyes Srungboonmee Jan 2005

Analytical Investigations Of Modified Active Remote Dynamic Vibration Absorbers, Piyes Srungboonmee

Theses

This thesis investigates the performance of proposed modified Active Remote Dynamic Absorber (ARDA) systems. The modification is intended to improve the practicability of the previously proposed ARDA technique. The current ARDA concept utilizes an absorber system identical to the primary system (the system whose vibration is to be controlled) and two voltage amplifiers. The modification to the current ARDA system employs one amplifier only and a smaller absorber system. The mathematical model of the modified ARDA systems is developed based on a finite element approach. The developed mathematical model is programmed and solved using Maple. The program is validated by …

Gas Plume Species Identification In Lwir Hyperspectral Imagery By Regression Analyses, David Pogorzala Jan 2005

Gas Plume Species Identification In Lwir Hyperspectral Imagery By Regression Analyses, David Pogorzala

Theses

The goal of this research was to develop an algorithm for identifying the constituent gases in stack releases. At the heart of the algorithm is a stepwise linear regression technique that only includes a basis vector in the model if it contributes significantly to the fit. This significance is calculated by an F-statistic. Issues such as atmospheric compensation, gas absorption and emission, background modeling, and fitting a linear regression to a non-linear radiance model were addressed in order to generate the matrix of basis vectors. Synthetic imagery generated by the DIRISG model were used as test cases. Results show that …

Active Barrier Packaging: Extending The Product Life Of Orange Juice Packaged In Gable Top Cartons, Ann Marie Kenback Chuprevich Jan 2005

Active Barrier Packaging: Extending The Product Life Of Orange Juice Packaged In Gable Top Cartons, Ann Marie Kenback Chuprevich

Theses

Providing a package that can actively participate in prolonging the product shelf life of orange juice adds value, both financially and nutritionally, to the product and to the package. The code date and shelf life of orange juice is in part determined by the ability of the product to maintain the level of vitamin C as stated on the nutritional label. Vitamin C deteriorates in the presence of oxygen; therefore, removal of oxygen from the package will decelerate the process of oxidation thereby diminishing the loss of vitamin C and prolonging the quality of the orange juice. The refrigerated shelf …

Torque Retention With Polypropylene Bottles, David Garrett Moszak Jan 2005

Torque Retention With Polypropylene Bottles, David Garrett Moszak

Theses

Two different case studies were examined to determine how different liner structures or plastic additives affect torque degradation. The first case study examined how torque is affected with and without the use of a zinc stearate plastic additive. The second case study examined how torque retention differs between a synthetic liner and a pulp board backed liner structure. Both torque studies provided a starting point for the application torque range for use in production. The torque studies were used to outline the necessary application torque so that the child resistant closures obtain and maintain the proper torque level over time …

Comparison Of Hyperspectral Imagery Target Detection Algorithm Chains, David C. Grimm Jan 2005

Comparison Of Hyperspectral Imagery Target Detection Algorithm Chains, David C. Grimm

Theses

Detection of a known target in an image has several different approaches. The complexity and number of steps involved in the target detection process makes a comparison of the different possible algorithm chains desirable. Of the different steps involved, some have a more significant impact than others on the final result the ability to find a target in an image. These more important steps often include atmospheric compensation, noise and dimensionality reduction, background characterization, and detection (matched filtering for this research). A brief overview of the algorithms to be compared for each step will be presented.

This research seeks to …

Theses

Managing a supply chain is one of the most complicated tasks today when erratic changes in demand must be met as soon as possible for staying competitive, while dealing with multitude of business partners that are involved in the chain. It is imperative that any changes in a corporation's product/service demand be immediately communicated with its suppliers and logistic service providers. This task of communication has long been overtaken by computerized systems from the telephones and fax machines. The computer technologies being used so far to connect two businesses are proving to be too rigid in today's world of mergers, …

Deployment Experiments For Ballooning On Mars (Debom), Aimee Nicolette Lemieux Jan 2005

Deployment Experiments For Ballooning On Mars (Debom), Aimee Nicolette Lemieux

Theses

One mode of planetary research involves balloons. They are relatively low cost, cover more area than a rover, obtain better resolution than an orbiter, and can collect data about the atmosphere [2]. From the study of their atmospheres, scientists believe that six planets and one moon of Saturn (Titan) can support balloon flights. According to scientists, Mars atmosphere may present the fewest challenges, allowing for a quicker timeline in using balloons [2]. At NASA's Wallops Flight Facility (WFF), experimental research has been conducted on one meter model Montgolfiere, Paraballoons, and Para-Montgolfiere balloons. The balloons were constructed of thin (0.6 mil), …

The objective of this work was to investigate the environmental conditions or patterns that impact cities and urban landscapes and to identify the reasonable buffers or corridors that can ease these impacts, primarily between industrial and residential areas. The hypothesis is that urban cities do face environmental impacts from various sources, a primary source being industrial practices, and that the implementation of corridors or buffers will minimize these impacts and possibly improve the environmental and socioeconomic conditions of the surrounding residential areas and the cities as a whole. The research included defining the structure of urban areas, investigating environmental impacts …

Effect Of Added C4-Alcohols On The Structure Of Microemulsion Droplets Measured By Small-Angle Neutron Scattering., Elvis A. Zambrano Jan 2005

Effect Of Added C4-Alcohols On The Structure Of Microemulsion Droplets Measured By Small-Angle Neutron Scattering., Elvis A. Zambrano

Theses

The role of C4-alcohols (n-butanol, 2-butanol and tert-butanol) in four component microemulsions is studied using neutron scattering. These microemulsions are dispersions of nanoscale droplets consisting of a core of water surrounded by a surfactant-stabilized shell. The particles are suspended in an oil (octane) continuum. The addition of a co-surfactant, such as a short-chain alcohol, modifies the droplet size and structure, as well as the rigidity of the surrounding shell. In this work, we investigate water-in-oil microemulsions employing small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments performed at the NIST Center for Neutron Research. Using this technique, it is possible to probe …

Experimental And Theoretical Study Of A Uv Disinfection System For Water Treatment, Wei Yang Jan 2005

Experimental And Theoretical Study Of A Uv Disinfection System For Water Treatment, Wei Yang

Theses

An innovative energy saving ultraviolet disinfection reactor has been developed and tested. The technical approach taken is to establish a relationship between the power consumption and the design features of a UV disinfection system, and then determine these design features by minimizing the power consumption function.

The circular-array type (CAT) UV reactor design consists of four short straight UV bulbs located circumferentially outside a quartz tube. A 4 inches diameter prototype was tested with a water flow rate of 1 1 GPM. Experimental results showed that the CAT UV reactor requires 30% less power consumption (9.6W) compared with a commercial …
