Exit Strategies Of Venture Capitalists In Hot Issue Markets: Evidence From The “Neuer Markt" In Germany, Wolfgang Bessler, Andreas Kurth Dec 2005

Exit Strategies Of Venture Capitalists In Hot Issue Markets: Evidence From The “Neuer Markt" In Germany, Wolfgang Bessler, Andreas Kurth

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

In this study we analyze the IPO exit behavior of venture capitalists (VCs) in the Neuer Markt, the former market for young growth companies in Germany. We find empirical evidence that VCs were able to time their exit quite successfully in the primary market and to some extent also in the secondary market. The larger the number of shares being sold by the VCs at the IPO date, the lower is the IPO performance after expiration of the lock-up period. In addition, the firms that went public in the year 2000 planned their IPO too late in the stock market …

Sustainability Of The Chinese Economic Expansion, L. R. Klein, Wendy Mak Dec 2005

Sustainability Of The Chinese Economic Expansion, L. R. Klein, Wendy Mak

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

China's economy has developed in such a startling way that most people – economists or not – place, as starting from about 1978, and many are questioning whether or not it can last? At the same time, they are wondering about its effect on the United States, and the world at large, because China is such a big country. In this presentation, we will look at the question: Can the Chinese economic expansion be sustained? Personally, we believe that it is, in fact sustainable, not necessarily at the present speed, and cannot say confidently that it will, in fact, be …

The Effect Of Nafta On Mexican Agricultural Exports To The United States: The Case Of Coffee Beans, 1970-2003, Mario M. Carrillo-Huerta, Israel Minor Bonilla Dec 2005

The Effect Of Nafta On Mexican Agricultural Exports To The United States: The Case Of Coffee Beans, 1970-2003, Mario M. Carrillo-Huerta, Israel Minor Bonilla

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Since its implementation in 1994, NAFTA's impacts on trade have been extensively and positively evaluated at an aggregate level, but not so much at a regional or sectorial level. Through time series analysis, this paper studies NAFTA's impact on Mexican exports of coffee beans to the U.S. The study shows a NAFTA's positive, although short-lasting effect (for two-three years) on the studied variable, mainly because the international market of coffee beans used to function on a quota system, thus preventing Mexico from capitalizing (and furthering) on the comparative advantage derived from its location, close to the U.S. market.

Value Of An External Audit Revisited, Mary Ellen Oliverio, Bernard Newman Dec 2005

Value Of An External Audit Revisited, Mary Ellen Oliverio, Bernard Newman

Faculty Working Papers and Articles

A survey investigation of the value of an external audit was undertaken in the summer of 2004 that was based primarily on the same questions that were used in a similar survey completed in 1984. Because of changes in auditing and the new regulatory structure, the question arose about the perception of such changes among the sample from the Fortune 500 used in the survey. Four additional questions were added to those used in the original survey that sought opinions related to the implementation of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. Among the key conclusions were these: 1. There has persisted …

Final FRDC Report - Project 2000/134

The purpose of this project was to collect the biological and fishery information necessary to conduct a stock assessment of the sandbar (known locally as ‘thickskin’) shark, Carcharhinus plumbeus and to improve and update the existing stock assessment for the dusky shark, Carcharhinus obscurus. Results from this project have already been used by the Western Australian Department of Fisheries to determine appropriate management arrangements for the State’s shark fisheries to ensure the sustainable exploitation of these species. Results have also assisted the WA target-shark fisheries in conducting Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) assessment in order …

A Model House And A House's Model: Reexamining Frank Lloyd Wright's House On The Mesa Project, Robert Wojitowicz Dec 2005

A Model House And A House's Model: Reexamining Frank Lloyd Wright's House On The Mesa Project, Robert Wojitowicz

Art Faculty Publications

Examines Frank Lloyd Wright's House on the Mesa project, which, despite its familiarity to most historians of 20th-century architecture, has never been thoroughly studied within the general context of Wright's expansive oeuvre and the specific circumstances of the Museum of Modern Art's 1932 'Modern Architecture: International Exhibition.' Numerous drawings for the project survive in the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives at Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona, although only photographic evidence survives of the original model. Scattered references to the project appear in Wright's writings, most notably his correspondence with wealthy Denver businessman George Cranmer, whose family served as a kind of …

This study was an examination as to whether cognitive, personality, and demographic attributes of students have changed over time. Archival data for 10 cohorts of freshman students from a private Midwest engineering institution were used. Data consisted of Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) results, Learning Environment Preferences (LEP) results, and demographics. ANOV As were performed for all interval data and Chi-Square analyses for all nominal data. Statistical significance was found for MBTI Thinking-Perceiving and Sensing-Intuition scales, LEP Cognitive Complexity Index scores, and demographic variables including age, parental education level, and SAT scores. Results are discussed in terms of practical significance, trends …

The Health Status Of Southern Children: A Neglected Regional Disparity, Jeffrey Goldhagen, Radley Remo, Thomas Bryant, Peter Wludyka, Amy B. Dailey, David Wood, Graham Watts, William Livingood

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

Purpose: Great variations exist in child health outcomes among states in the United States, with southern states consistently ranked among the lowest in the country. Investigation of the geographical distribution of children’s health status and the regional factors contributing to these outcomes has been neglected. We attempted to identify the degree to which region of residence may be linked to health outcomes for children with the specific aim of determining whether living in the southern region of the United States is adversely associated with children’s health status.

Methods: A child health index (CHI) that ranked each state in the United …

Retest Effects In Operational Selection Settings: Development And Test Of A Framework, Filip Lievens, Tine Buyse, Paul R. Sackett Dec 2005

Retest Effects In Operational Selection Settings: Development And Test Of A Framework, Filip Lievens, Tine Buyse, Paul R. Sackett

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study proposes a framework for examining the effects of retaking tests in operational selection settings. A central feature of this framework is the distinction between within-person and between-person retest effects. This framework is used to develop hypotheses about retest effects for exemplars of 3 types of tests (knowledge tests, cognitive ability tests, and situational judgment tests) and to test these hypotheses in a high stakes selection setting (admission to medical studies in Belgium). Analyses of within-person retest effects showed that mean scores of repeat test takers were one-third of a standard deviation higher for the knowledge test and situational …

Consistent Targets And Optimal Monetary Policy: A Note, Stephen M. Miller, Huiping Yuan Dec 2005

Consistent Targets And Optimal Monetary Policy: A Note, Stephen M. Miller, Huiping Yuan

Economics Working Papers

Kydland and Prescott (1977) develop a simple model of monetary policy making, where the central bank needs some commitment technique to achieve optimal monetary policy over time. Although not their main focus, they illustrate the difference between consistent and optimal policy in a sequential-decision one-period world. We employ the analytical method developed in Yuan and Miller (2005), whereby the government appoints a central bank with consistent targets or delegates consistent targets to the central bank. Thus, the central bank s welfare function differs from the social welfare function, which cause consistent policy to prove optimal.
