Analogical Modeling And Morphological Change: The Case Of The Adjectival Negative Prefix In English, Don William Chapman, Royal Skousen Jan 2005

Analogical Modeling And Morphological Change: The Case Of The Adjectival Negative Prefix In English, Don William Chapman, Royal Skousen

Faculty Publications

This article examines the usefulness of Skousen’s Analogical Modeling (AM) for explaining morphological change. In contrast to previous accounts of analogy, AM constitutes a general unified model of language that accounts for both sporadic and systematic changes. AM also provides explicit constraints on analogy that allow explanation of how morphological changes begin, which forms most likely serve as patterns for analogy, and which forms are most likely to change.

AM is then tested on the case of the adjectival negative prefix in English (in-, un-, dis-, etc.), using the Middle and Early Modern English portions of the Helsinki corpus as …

Attitudes Toward Abortion Among Religious Traditions In The United States: Change Or Continuity?, John P. Hoffmann, Sherrie Mills Johnson Jan 2005

Attitudes Toward Abortion Among Religious Traditions In The United States: Change Or Continuity?, John P. Hoffmann, Sherrie Mills Johnson

Faculty Publications

Abortion continues to be a highly contentious issue in the United States, with few signs of abatement. The goal of this paper is to specify how variable positions about abortion across religious traditions have led to differential shifts in attitudes among their members. Based on culturally relevant events, position papers, and other religious media, the guiding hypotheses propose that Evangelicals have become increasingly opposed to abortion for elective reasons; yet changes in attitudes regarding abortion for traumatic reasons are due primarily to cohort shifts. Data from the cumulative General Social Surveys (1972–2002) are used to test the hypotheses. The first …

The Correlation Grid: Analysis Of Synchronous Spiking In Multi-Dimensional Spike Train Data And Identification Of Feasible Connection Architectures, L Stuart, M Walter, R Borisyuk Jan 2005

The Correlation Grid: Analysis Of Synchronous Spiking In Multi-Dimensional Spike Train Data And Identification Of Feasible Connection Architectures, L Stuart, M Walter, R Borisyuk

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This paper presents a visualization technique specifically designed to support the analysis of synchronous firings in multiple, simultaneously recorded, spike trains. This technique, called the correlation grid, enables investigators to identify groups of spike trains, where each pair of spike trains has a high probability of generating spikes approximately simultaneously or within a constant time shift. Moreover, the correlation grid was developed to help solve the following reverse problem: identification of the connection architecture between spike train generating units, which may produce a spike train dataset similar to the one under analysis. To demonstrate the efficacy of this approach, results …

Mouse Cytomegalovirus M33 Is Necessary And Sufficient In Virus-Induced Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Migration, Ryan Melnychuk, Patsy Smith, Craig N. Kreklywich, Franziska Ruchti, Jennifer Totonchy, Laurel Hall, Lambert Loh, Jay A. Nelson, Susan L. Orloff, Daniel N. Streblow Jan 2005

Mouse Cytomegalovirus M33 Is Necessary And Sufficient In Virus-Induced Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Migration, Ryan Melnychuk, Patsy Smith, Craig N. Kreklywich, Franziska Ruchti, Jennifer Totonchy, Laurel Hall, Lambert Loh, Jay A. Nelson, Susan L. Orloff, Daniel N. Streblow

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Mouse cytomegalovirus (MCMV) encodes two potential seven-transmembrane-spanning proteins with homologies to cellular chemokine receptors, M33 and M78. While these virus-encoded chemokine receptors are necessary for the in vivo pathogenesis of MCMV, the function of these proteins is unknown. Since vascular smooth muscle cell (SMC) migration is of critical importance for the development of atherosclerosis and other vascular diseases, the ability of M33 to promote SMC motility was assessed. Similar to human CMV, MCMV induced the migration of mouse aortic SMCs but not mouse fibroblasts. To demonstrate whether M33 was required for MCMV-induced SMC migration, we employed interfering-RNA technology to specifically …

Center For Children With Special Needs: Investigating Architectural Design Through A Child's Perception Of Place, Michael P. Wild Jan 2005

Center For Children With Special Needs: Investigating Architectural Design Through A Child's Perception Of Place, Michael P. Wild

Architecture Theses

Embodying energy, emotion and youthfulness, children are a delicate and sensitive part of our communities. Unfortunately because of their size and growing immune systems, when faced with illness children tend to need special attention in order to regain their bodies balance and health. Therefore, developing a building and creating a special environment for children to recover in is an important feature to the Fargo community. The building[s] will need to encompass the children's creative thoughts and ideals, sustaining a typology which will support and nurture their time of healing and recovery.

Resource And Diagnostic Center For Developmental Disabilities, Erin Rae Kelash

Architecture Theses

Psychology as it relates to architecture was investigated in order to determine appropriate design requirements for a resource and diagnostic center for individuals with developmental disabilities. The fundamental hypothesis of this thesis is that medical and psychological issues can inform proper health care design. Specifically, creating an environment which promotes both physical and psychological comfort is vital to the effectiveness of the treatment, research and education which takes place in this building.

Domus Dei: Diocese Of Fargo Retreat Center, Craig D. Michels Jan 2005

Domus Dei: Diocese Of Fargo Retreat Center, Craig D. Michels

Architecture Theses

In 2003 the Catholic Diocese of Fargo moved into a new building in south Fargo next to the new Shanley High School. They did this to get all of the offices into a single building which is call the Pastoral Center. The old main office building was the Queen of Peace retreat center, which was an old convent. In this move they unfortunately no longer have a retreat center as it wasn’t budgeted for in the new building. In 2001 a new ministry group call the Young Disciples Teams was created and run out of the Queen of Peace. This …

Humanizing Architecture For Healthcare: Designing A Balance Between System Centered And Patient Centered Architecture, Heather Helland Jan 2005

Humanizing Architecture For Healthcare: Designing A Balance Between System Centered And Patient Centered Architecture, Heather Helland

Architecture Theses

Far too often the meaning of architecture for health care has been focused on the notion of a provider (system)— center care instead of a patient—centered care. This paper will explain the notion of how crucial the relationship is between both. Those buildings that achieve a balance between the two have arrived at a state of equality and become symbols of civic pride. More specifically, this study will take place on the island of St. Thomas. The hospital of the island has been scorned for its deplorable condition both inside and out. It was not uncommon for the newspapers to …

Images Of God: The Effect Of Personal Theologies On Moral Attitudes, Political Affiliation, And Religious Behavior, Christoper Bader, Paul Froese Jan 2005

Images Of God: The Effect Of Personal Theologies On Moral Attitudes, Political Affiliation, And Religious Behavior, Christoper Bader, Paul Froese

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

Social scientists often explain religious effects in terms of religious group affiliations. Typically, researchers identify religious groups by denomination or some broader popular categorization, such as “fundamentalist” or “evangelical.” To capture religious differences more effectively, Steensland et al. (2000) propose an intricate classification of American denominations that takes into account the theology and historical development of various American religious traditions to predict individual attitudes and behaviors. We believe that equal care and attention should be devoted to the development of key measures of belief that may cross denominational lines. In this article, we propose one such measure: personal conceptions or …

Branch One: A Treehouse Retreat, Linn Bjornrud Jan 2005

Branch One: A Treehouse Retreat, Linn Bjornrud

Architecture Theses

The tree house is a concept that puts excitement into the eyes and hearts of children everywhere. What is unique is that the same affect is had on many adults when asked about it. This is due to the fact that nearly every child either experiences or entertains the idea of what fun could be had with a tree house. The need to enjoy life is one that cannot be lost in the responsibilities and routines of everyday living. Instead we must celebrate the simple and honest pleasures that exist around us. The goal of this retreat is to provide …

Generative Fathering And The Dynamics Of Connection Between Fathers And Their Children, Sean E. Brotherson, David C. Dollahite, Alan J. Hawkins Jan 2005

Generative Fathering And The Dynamics Of Connection Between Fathers And Their Children, Sean E. Brotherson, David C. Dollahite, Alan J. Hawkins

Faculty Publications

This study focused on examining narrative accounts told by fathers about how they connect with and care for their children. Qualitative, in-depth interviews were conducted with 16 fathers concerning their relationships with at least two of their children, including one child with special needs. The fathers' stories were recorded and the narratives were then explored to develop a better understanding of themes and behaviors by fathers related to the dynamics of connecting with their children. Coding and analysis of the fathers' personal narrative demonstrated specific patterns related to the concept of connection in a conceptual ethic of generative father. Findings …

Shared Experience Building Around The Family Crucible Of Cancer, W. David Robinson, Jason S. Carroll, Wendy L. Watson Jan 2005

Shared Experience Building Around The Family Crucible Of Cancer, W. David Robinson, Jason S. Carroll, Wendy L. Watson

Faculty Publications

This study was designed to gain a greater understanding of the effects cancer has on families while simultaneously developing family therapy interventions that are helpful for families experiencing the crucible of cancer. On the basis of an action research paradigm, the authors designed an intensive case-analysis protocol involving reflective interviewing to learn about the personal perspectives of family members who participate in therapeutic treatment for cancer. An integration of reflective insight by the families, their therapist, and the research team ultimately revealed that cancer families face an ongoing struggle (a) between feelings of isolation and connectedness, (b) to make meaning …

The Kinderhook Plates, The Tucson Artifacts, And Mormon Archeological Zeal, J. Michael Hunter Jan 2005

The Kinderhook Plates, The Tucson Artifacts, And Mormon Archeological Zeal, J. Michael Hunter

Faculty Publications

“The Kinderhook Plates, the Tucson Artifacts, and Mormon Archeological Zeal” discusses Mormon archeological zeal, or the short-sighted enthusiasm shown by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) regarding relics or artifacts that might "prove" the veracity of the Book of Mormon or even of the LDS Church. This article summarizes the history of both the Kinderhook Plates and the Tucson Artifacts within this context, stating that the Kinderhook Plates have been proven fraudulent but that the Tucson Artifacts still provide mystery to researchers. The Kinderhook Plates were created by three conspirators who lived in Kinderhook, …

The Case For Sidney Rigdon As Author Of The Lectures On Faith, Noel B. Reynolds Jan 2005

The Case For Sidney Rigdon As Author Of The Lectures On Faith, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

Twentieth century attempts to include the "Lectures on Faith" in the writings of Joseph Smith, Jr., provoked this comprehensive survey of historical evidence and carefully designed authorship testing of the text. Every credible approach reaches the same conclusion. Sidney Rigdon wrote the Lectures on Faith, likely without help from Joseph Smith or any others. These Lectures are characterized by both teachings and language that Rigdon may have retained from his recent discipleship with Alexander Campbell. The published Lectures follow both the form and content of lectures given and then published by frontier phenomenon Charles Finney. The decision to insert these …

Autonomous Vehicle Technologies For Small Fixed-Wing Uavs, Randal Beard, Derek Kingston, Morgan Quigley, Deryl Snyder, Reed Christiansen, Walt Johnson, Timothy Mclain, Michael A. Goodrich

Faculty Publications

The objective of this paper is to describe the design and implementation of a small semi-autonomous fixed-wing unmanned air vehicle. In particular we describe the hardware and software architectures used in the design. We also describe a low weight, low cost autopilot developed at Brigham Young University and the algorithms associated with the autopilot. Novel PDA and voice interfaces to the UAV are described. In addition, we overview our approach to real-time path planning, trajectory generation, and trajectory tracking. The paper is augmented with movie files that demonstrate the functionality of the UAV and its control software.

Genetic Variation In Ustilago Bullata: Molecular Genetic Markers And Virulence On Bromus Tectorum Host Lines, Mikel Stevens, Daniel J. Fairbanks, Susan E. Meyer, David L. Nelson, Suzette Clement, Jennifer Waters Jan 2005

Genetic Variation In Ustilago Bullata: Molecular Genetic Markers And Virulence On Bromus Tectorum Host Lines, Mikel Stevens, Daniel J. Fairbanks, Susan E. Meyer, David L. Nelson, Suzette Clement, Jennifer Waters

Faculty Publications

The pathogen Ustilago bullata often causes epidemic levels of head smut disease in Intermountain populations of the inbreeding annual grass Bromus tectorum. We examined patterns of genetic variation for virulence and for amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers in four U. bullata populations on B. tectorum in northern Utah and southern Nevada. Patterns of disease incidence generally supported a genefor-gene model for virulence and resistance in this pathosystem. Most host lines were susceptible to most or all paired isolates included in cross-inoculation tests, but we found evidence for the existence of four avirulence genes. Host lines with alleles conferring resistance …
