The Analysis Of Core Competence For Chinese Oil Shipping Company, Binmeng. Mo Dec 2005

The Analysis Of Core Competence For Chinese Oil Shipping Company, Binmeng. Mo

World Maritime University Dissertations

During the past decade, China’s crude oil import has risen sharply, which demands the immediately matching shipping capacity of the domestic oil shipping companies. Therefore, how to steer the Chinese oil shipping enterprises towards a promising development is a very big problem facing the Chinese entrepreneurs. This paper has tried to provide some practical suggestion to improve Chinese oil shipping companies’ core competence based on the analysis of Chinese Shipping Tanker Company, which is typical representative for this industry. After having studied the measuring methods of the core competence and the index system building principles, the author constructs a complete …

Combatant Status: It Is Time For Intermediate Levels Of Recognition For Partial Compliance, Eric Talbot Jensen Dec 2005

Combatant Status: It Is Time For Intermediate Levels Of Recognition For Partial Compliance, Eric Talbot Jensen

Faculty Scholarship

Under current international law, combatant status is an all-or-nothing proposition. Either a fighting force qualifies under all the criteria of article 4 of the GPW and receives all the privileges and immunities of combatant status, or a force does not qualify, and is provided no protection above that of any other civilian in the area, and may even be disqualified from the protections afforded to civilians. Given the reality of today's battlefields where the conflict is seldom between the armed forces of two nations, these requirements are counterproductive and provide a disincentive for fighters to distinguish themselves from the civilian …

Assessment Of Anti-Poaching Effort In Ruaha National Park, Tanzania, C. L. Nahonyo

Tanzania Journal of Science

Anti-poaching effort in Ruaha National Park for the period between January 1996 to June 1999 was evaluated in terms of strength, frequency and duration of patrols, area covered and success of patrols. It was found that the park spent 72.4 US$ km-2 year-1 on law enforcement. There were 72 rangers each required to patrol on the average 143 km2. A total of 1,255 patrols were conducted; patrols ranged from 14 to 43 trips per month and each lasted between 1 to 25 days and most were foot and vehicle patrols. Patrol units had 2 to 11 rangers while the average …

The Exit Structure Of Venture Capital, D. Gordon Smith Dec 2005

The Exit Structure Of Venture Capital, D. Gordon Smith

Faculty Scholarship

Venture capital contracts contain extensive provisions regulating exit by the venture capitalists. In this Article, Professor Smith employs financial contracting theory in conjunction with original data collected from 367 venture-backed companies to analyze these exit provisions. He concludes that the combination of exit provisions in a typical venture capital relationship serves to lock venture capitalists into the investment during the initial stage. In later stages of the relationship, the venture capitalists acquire increasing control over exit by securing additional seats on the board of directors and by obtaining contractual exit rights. The result is a sophisticated transfer of control from …

Intraarticular Injection Of Sodium Hyaluronate In Adhesive Capsulitis Of The Shoulder, Shu-Fen Sun, Chiao-Wen Hwang, Pei-Te Hsu, Ya-Wen Hsu, Shin-Lung Tsai, Jue-Long Wang, Chien-Wei Hsu, Yi-Jiun Chou Dec 2005

Intraarticular Injection Of Sodium Hyaluronate In Adhesive Capsulitis Of The Shoulder, Shu-Fen Sun, Chiao-Wen Hwang, Pei-Te Hsu, Ya-Wen Hsu, Shin-Lung Tsai, Jue-Long Wang, Chien-Wei Hsu, Yi-Jiun Chou

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The etiology and natural history of adhesive capsulitis remain obscure, which limited subsequent management. Traditional treatments include conservative medical therapy and physical therapy, but severe shoulder pain may constitute an obstacle to joint mobilization. Local steroid injection into or around the shoulder joint has been shown to alleviate pain in early stages of the disease. Late disease appears less responsive and there are many known risks of complications. Many different protocols to treat the disease have been reported, but the results are generally unsatisfatcory and difficult to compare. Our goal was to determine the efficacy of a combined treatment-intraarticular injection of …

Changing Perspectives On Exchange Rates: Theory And Policy Implications, Perry Warjiyo Dec 2005

Changing Perspectives On Exchange Rates: Theory And Policy Implications, Perry Warjiyo

Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking

This paper reviews theoretical and empirical perspectives pertaining to the nature and impacts of exchange rate movements on macroeconomic conditions, and their fundamental ramifications on macroeconomic and monetary policies. In particular, we show that, with increasing speed and scope of financial globalization and cross-border capital flows, the view on exchange rate has been changing from trade flows to financial asset views. Exchange rate movements have been exhibiting greater volatility beyond fundamentals and often deviate from equilibrium, driven by factors such as shifts in risk premia, investor preferences, as well as underlying economic and financial conditions. Policy implications from such a …

The Study On M&A In Today's China Shipping Industry, Yichun Cao Dec 2005

The Study On M&A In Today's China Shipping Industry, Yichun Cao

World Maritime University Dissertations

In 2005, although there came along another wave of M&A activities in global shipping industry, we haven’t seen any sign of the emergence of large-scale M&As in China shipping industry so far. It’s quite unfavorable to the future development of whole China shipping sector. Besides, most Chinese shipping companies show no interest in, and even resist carrying out such economic event. However, the reasons behind the problem are various and intricate. The unique China macroenvironment and different kinds of deficiencies in Chinese shipping enterprises really hinder the appearance of mass M&A activities in China shipping industry. Here the macroenvironment includes …

The Influence Of Quantization Process On The Performance Of Global Entropic Thresholding Algorithms Using Electrical Capacitance Tomography Data, A. J. Mwambela Dec 2005

The Influence Of Quantization Process On The Performance Of Global Entropic Thresholding Algorithms Using Electrical Capacitance Tomography Data, A. J. Mwambela

Tanzania Journal of Science

In measuring component fraction in multiphase flows using tomographic techniques, it is desirable to use a high speed tomography system capable of generating 100 tomograms per second. The electrical capacitance tomography system in this regard is considered to be the best among the available tomographic techniques. However, due to its inherent limitations the system generates distorted reconstructed tomograms necessitating the use of extra signal processing techniques such as thresholding to minimize these distortions. Whilst thresholding technique has been effective in minimizing distortions, the additional computation associated with the process limits the speed of tomogram generation desired from the system. Further, …

Petrography And Mineral Chemistry Of The Pelitic And Semi-Pelitic Gneisses Of The Merelani Tanzanite Mining Area, Northeastern Tanzania, E. P. Malisa Dec 2005

Petrography And Mineral Chemistry Of The Pelitic And Semi-Pelitic Gneisses Of The Merelani Tanzanite Mining Area, Northeastern Tanzania, E. P. Malisa

Tanzania Journal of Science

Sillimanite/kyanite + K-feldspar + quartz ± garnet + biotite ± Fe-Ti oxide-bearing rocks occur associated with calc-silicate rocks in the Merelani tanzanite mining area north-eastern Tanzania. The whole rock chemistry shows varying rock oxidation ratios, which are reflected in the mineralogical assemblages. Almandine garnet is oxidized to mixtures of hematite, quartz, and hydrous aluminosilicates in oxidized rocks and is absent in highly oxidized rocks. In the latter, ilmenite is oxidized into mixtures of rutile and hematite. Such relatively high temperature alteration/oxidation effects could have occurred with the influx of water. Absence of staurolite in these aluminium-rich rocks is indicative of …

Tanzania Journal of Science

A single stage anaerobic digester employing a sisal fibre waste fixed bed was studied for biogas production from sisal pulp waste. The fibre was colonized by microorganisms involved in biogas production. The sisal pulp waste to be digested was fed from the top and was sprinkled intermittently with recirculating leachate from the material. Organic loading rates of 0.1-10 kg volatile solids (VS) m-3d-1 could be applied and methane yields in the range of 0.13-0.48 m3 CH4 kg-1 VS added were obtained. The average methane content in the biogas produced from sisal pulp waste was 55%, and the biogas production rate …
