Nature/Culture Clash: The Transnational Trade In Gmos, Dayna Scott

This paper aims to offer a fresh perspective into what is at stake in the cross-cultural trade dispute over genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) by subjecting a particular discursive sample, the parties’ submissions to the WTO panel, to critical scrutiny. The first step involves a survey of the rhetorical strategies deployed by the parties’ in the presentation of their arguments to the Panel. Next, I embark on the task of ‘disassembling the double helix’. Interspecific Competition For Pollination Lowers Seed Production And Outcrossing In Mimulus Ringens, John M. Bell, Jeffrey D. Karron, Randall J. Mitchell

Sympatric plant species with similar flowering phenologies and floral morphologies may compete for pollination, and as a consequence potentially influence each other's reproductive success and mating system. Two likely competitors are Mimulus ringens and Lobelia siphilitica, which co-occur in wet meadows of central and eastern North America, produce blue zygomorphic flowers, and share several species of bumble bee pollinators. To test for effects of competition for pollination, we planted experimental arrays of Mimulus ringens, each consisting of genets with unique combinations of homozygous marker genotypes. In two arrays we planted mixtures of Mimulus and Lobelia. and in two additional arrays …

Effects Of Glial Cell Line-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (Gdnf) On Stem/Progenitor Cell Proliferation And Differentiation, Yan Chen

Stem/progenitor cells are present in the adult brain; they undergo constantproliferation and differentiate into mature neurons in certain brain areas, a phenomenoncalled neurogenesis. This study investigated the effects of GDNF, a potent trophic factorof dopaminergic neurons, on neurogenesis in the brain. Nestin and 5-Bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) were used as stem/progenitor cells markers.First, we observed extensive bilateral increases of stem/progenitor cells in thedentate gyrus and substantia nigra after continuous infusion of GDNF into the normal ratbrain. However, none of the BrdU+ cells showed neuronal features in the substantia nigraas characterized by immunocytochemical procedures. Next, we identified themorphology of BrdU+ cells after infusing …

An extensive literature exists on the compensation of time delayed processes. These compensation methods may be broadly divided into parameter optimised controllers, in which the controller parameters are adapted to the controller structure (the most common such controller is the proportional integral derivative, or PID, controller), and structurally optimised controllers, in which the controller structure and parameters are adapted optimally to the structure and parameters of the process model. The sensitive and simple photothermal technique of Surface Thermal Lensing (STL) was employed to study the thermo-mechanical response of an amorphous polycarbonate as a bulk. A discussion is given of how previously developed theories did not fit well with the present work. Therefore, only qualitative analysis and discussion of the experimental results is made, emphasizing the influence of various factors on the STL signal. The work here is mainly a study of the dependence of the STL signal on the modulated pump beam frequency. The purpose of the study is to determine if differentiating homework for biology will motivate students to complete and turn in homework, address the needs of diverse learners, and improve academic achievement. The rationale assumes there is a positive relationship between homework completion and academic achievement and that students have different learning styles that can be addressed by allowing choice of homework assignment based on Gardner’s multiple intelligences and Bloom’s taxonomy.

Small quantities of the floppy bimesogen di(4PPB5)3Si were dissolved in an anticlinic liquid crystal consisting of a mixture of left-handed and right-handed TFMHPOBC, with enantiomer excess X=0.2. The bimesogen dopant was found to promote anticlinic order with an anticlinic interaction coefficient per molecule udopant smaller than, but of the same order as, that of the rigid bent-core dopant P-7PIMB. For both dopants udopant was found to be much larger than that due to a pair of TFMHPOBC molecules in adjacent layers. Like most kinds of writing, academic writing rarely shines, but far more often than ordinary writing scholarly prose is murky and impenetrable. This brief jeu d'esprit considers several forms of bad writing, rejecting the claim, increasingly made in academic quarters, that "difficult writing" is necessary to the scholarly enterprise. Bloated, foggy, and enigmatic prose masquerades as profundity that escapes conventional mental grooves. In fact it is useless, unethical, and taken far enough, evil.

The present work consisted in the use of biochemical and molecular nutrition blocks (BMN) in llamas during the last third of the gestation period, at the Agricultural Experiment Center of Condori (CEAC), located 49 km north of the city of Oruro, and 12 km north of the Caracollo population, in the province of Cercado. Platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1) is a cell surface glycoprotein receptor expressed on a range of blood cells including platelets, and is also on vascular endothelial cells. PECAM-1 possesses adhesive and signalling properties, the latter being mediated by an Immunoreceptor Tyrosine-based Inhibitory Motif present on the cytoplasmic tail of the protein. Recent studies in vitro have demonstrated that PECAM-1 signalling inhibits the aggregation of platelets. In the present study we have utilised PECAM-1 deficient mice and radiation chimeras to investigate the function of this receptor in the regulation of thrombus formation.
