Review Of The Book Gender In Applied Communication Contexts, Anjali Ram

The best scholarship on gender is one that translates readily into advocacy, action, and intervention without blunting its theoretical teeth. The repertoire of 14 articles and four commentaries included in the book “Gender in Applied Communication Con-texts,” edited by Patrice M. Buzzanell, Helen Sterk,and Lynn H. Turner, clearly demonstrate a commitment to feminist praxis, while retaining a focus on theoretical engagement. Topics range from sexual harassment and breast cancer to telecommuting,mothering, and feminist pedagogy, as the authors in this collection attempt to address directly how gender is constructed and implicated in varied communication contexts.

Decadal-Scale Analysis Of Coastal Landslides Along The Big Sur Coast: Rates And Processes, Cheryl J. Hapke, Krystal R. Green

Landslides in the coastal mountains of Big Sur in Monterey and San Luis Obispo Counties are common, especially during the winter months. These frequent landslides regularly disrupt Coast Highway 1, by blocking the highway with boulders and/or debris, or undercutting the roadway. Historical documentation of landslide activity in this area indicates slide activity closed portions of the road prior to its completion in 1937. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) maintains the Coast Highway 1 corridor and recently established the Big Sur Coast Highway Management Plan (CHMP) to develop management practices that will best maintain the highway while minimizing impact …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The present work describes the synthesis and spectral properties of some platinum metals chlorides coordination compounds of 4[N-(-(furan-2'-carboxalidene)amino]antipyrine thiosemicarbazone (FFAAPTS) and 4[N-(3',4',5'-trimethoxybenzalidene)amino]antipyrine thiosemicarbazone (TMBAAPTS). All the compounds have the general composition MCl_2(L) (M = Pd^{2+} or Pt^{2+} ; L = FFAAPTS or TMBAAPTS) or MCl_3(L) (M = Ru^{3+} , Rh^{3+} or Ir^{3+} ; L = FFAAPTS or TMBAAPTS). All the complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, molar conductance, molecular weight, magnetic measurements, and infrared and electronic spectra. The infrared spectra suggest that both the thiosemicarbazones behave as neutral tridentate (N,N,S) ligands. The magnetic and electronic spectra suggest that Pd^{2+} and …

Investigation Of Electron Transfer Reaction Between Diphenylbenzidine And Ascorbic Acid, Iftikhar Imam Naqvi, Abida Perveen

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The kinetics of the reduction of diphenylbenzidine by ascorbic acid were investigated in the pH range 3.5 to 5.0. Diphenylbenzidine was prepared by the oxidation of diphenylamine with cerium(IV) sulfate tetra hydrate. The order of the reaction with respect to each of the reactants, i.e ascorbic acid (ASC), diphenylbenzidine (DPB) and H^+ ,was found to be first. The following rate law is recommended: Rate = {k_1 [C_{12}H_{10}N_2C_{12}H_{10}] + k_2K [C_{12}H_{10}N_2C_{12}H_{10}][H^+]}[C_6H_8O_6] where k_1 and k_2 have the values of 2.0 \times 10^4 dm^3mol^{-1} s^{-1} and 6.58 \times 10^3 dm^3.mol^{-1}.s^{-1} , respectively. The debate over whether it serves or undermines the interests of justice for lawyers to temper the zeal of their advocacy based on considerations of morality or justice has largely been polarized between two camps: traditionalists and moralists. Traditionalists defend the amoral role of lawyers, arguing that lawyers should remain moral neutral in their representation of clients. Moralists propose alternative social justice lawyering models, which urge lawyers' morally engagement in their choice of clients, their interpretation of law, and their counseling of clients.

This paper describes recent results obtained with the Ultrasonic/Shear-Force Microscope (SUNM), an analytical tool suitable for investigating the quite different dynamic displayed by fluid-like films when subjected to mesoscopic confinement and while in intimate contact with two sliding solid boundaries. The SUNM uses two sensory modules to concurrently but independently monitor the effects that fluid-mediated interactions exert on two sliding bodies: the microscope’s sharp probe (attached to a piezoelectric sensor) and the analyzed sample (attached to an ultrasonic transducer). The incorporation of science into environmental policy is a key concern at many levels of decision making. Various institutions have sought to standardize the protection of natural resources by requiring that decisions be made based on the "best available science." Here we present empirical data describing the incorporation of best available science in the land-use policy process on a local scale. Results are based on interviews with planners and others who conducted scientific reviews associated with a Washington State Growth Management Act amendment that requires the inclusion of best available science in protecting critical areas. The purpose of this study is to analyze the precipitation quality in various land use categories throughout Portland. Because of its significance in the removal of atmospheric pollutants, wet deposition is an important component to study. In addition to its significant role in cleansing the atmosphere, wet deposition can have a direct impact on the ecosystem due to its potential pollutant load. The Hatch-Waxman Act was enacted to balance the competing interests in the pharmaceutical marketplace between brand name and generic drug manufacturers. In the twenty years since its inception, the safe harbor provision contained in § 271(e)(1), has been interpreted to provide broad protection to those involved in research activities. However, in 2003, the Federal Circuit narrowly interpreted the safe harbor provision in a move that could potentially frustrate future research and improvements on patented technologies. Merck v. Integra is currently before the United States Supreme Court, who has the challenge of unraveling the competing interests involved. In order to encourage …

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

In SmithKline Beecham Corp. v. Apotx Corp., the court incorrectly applied the statutory public use bar and held the clinical trials did not constitute an experimental use. This ruling set the bar too high. Applying a narrow construction of the law, the CAFC invalidated a claim in a clear case of experimental use. The decision not only misapplied the precedent defining an “inherent” feature of the invention, but also essentially eliminated the need for applying the policies that underlie and define the public use bar under 35 U.S.C. § 102(b).

There has been an erosion of the ideal of truth as a guiding force for what we do. This includes a dishonoring of the tradition of the truth-seeking function of scholars. For the university-based intellectual, including legal scholars, the problem with commitments to ends other than truth-seeking is that once we accept a mission distinct from the pursuit of truth and honest discourse, most of the remaining options are suspect - including falseness, hypocrisy, self-deception, subordination of self to a collective, profit, dogmatism, devotion to tradition, and propaganda.

Furniture Usage And Activity Budgets Of Captive Black And White Ruffed Lemurs (Varecia Variegata Variegata) And Ring- Tailed Lemurs (Lemur Catta) At Bramble Park Zoo, Watertown, South Dakota, Zarah Hedge

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

A behavioral study was conducted on the black and white ruffed lemurs and ring-tailed lemurs at Bramble Park Zoo in summer 2004 to determine if the furniture in the exhibit was sufficient to enable them to display their natural behaviors. The study was performed using a time sampling method of one minute, and ten hours of data was gathered. Both species of lemur spent a significant portion of the observed time resting, more so than has been found in wild populations of lemurs.
