The Effect Of Age And Diet On Immune Function In Felines, Lindsay Fitz Hendey Jan 2005

The Effect Of Age And Diet On Immune Function In Felines, Lindsay Fitz Hendey

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Aging is associated with several physiological changes. An important physiological change seen in aging is a shift in the balance between oxidants and antioxidants, in which increased oxidants, or free radicals, seen with aging lead to increased cellular damage, also called oxidative stress. Immune function of elderly individuals seems to be significantly impacted through a decline of immunologic function as well as dysregulation of inflammatory and specific immune responses. Oxidative stress and the accumulation of free radicals have been implicated in the decline of immune function seen in the aged. Antioxidants, both intracellular and exogenous, counteract free radical damage to …

Untitled Paper 2004-2005a, Nicole Golden

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

There is possibly more than one PAL gene in soybeans. The PAL gene encodes part of the phenyl propanoid pathway. BLAST searches were done to find sequences that are similar to the already determined PAL gene. From there everything above .03% accuracy was kept for further study. Those sequences were place in Batch Entrez then consensus sequences were formed in Sequencher. This was done in order to try and produce primers for other possible PAL genes so that they can be seen when running a gel.

Latinas And Breast Cancer In The Midwest: Factors Influencing Survivorship, M. Elise Radina, Daniel R. Longo, Jane M. Armer Jan 2005

Latinas And Breast Cancer In The Midwest: Factors Influencing Survivorship, M. Elise Radina, Daniel R. Longo, Jane M. Armer

International Journal of Global Health and Health Disparities

Latinos are the largest ethnic minority group in the U.S. and the Midwest is experiencing the fastest growth in residents of Hispanic descent. Rural health care delivery systems in these areas must therefore respond to changing demographics and provide culturally appropriate service delivery. The incidence rate of breast cancer among Latinas is lower than that among non-Hispanic women; however an increasing number of Latinas are being diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite higher mortality rates from cancer than non-Hispanic women, more Latinas are being treated for breast cancer and are now facing their own unique survivorship experiences This paper addresses factors …

The Role Of The Insecticide Ddt In Breast Cancer, Jared D. Taylor Jan 2005

The Role Of The Insecticide Ddt In Breast Cancer, Jared D. Taylor

International Journal of Global Health and Health Disparities

Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer among black and white females, with approximately 211,000 new cases expected to be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2004 (1). More importantly, incidence has been increasing. Age-adjusted breast cancer incidence in U.S. females rose from the 88.6 per 100,000 in the early 1970s to 109.8 in the early 1990s (2). This represents a 24 percent increase over that time. This trend is only partially explained by the known risk factors for breast cancer, including advancing age, early menarche, late menopause, late age at first parturition and family history. Therefore, researchers have …

Indexing Principles And A Widely Applicable Paradigm For Indexing Animal Populations, Richard M. Engeman Jan 2005

Indexing Principles And A Widely Applicable Paradigm For Indexing Animal Populations, Richard M. Engeman

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Monitoring animal populations is an essential component of wildlife research and management. Population indices can be efficient methods for monitoring populations when more labour-intensive densityestimation procedures are impractical or invalid to apply, and many monitoring objectives can be couched in an indexing framework. Indexing procedures obtain maximal utility if they exhibit key characteristics, including being practical to apply, being sensitive to changes or differences in the target species' population, having an inherent variance formula and allowing for precision in index values, and relying on as few assumptions as possible. Additional useful characteristics include being able simultaneously to monitor multiple animal …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Chemical repellents sometimes can provide a nonlethal alternative for reducing wildlife impacts to agricultural production. In late summer and autumn 2002, we evaluated Bird Shield™ (active ingredient: methyl anthranilate, Bird Shield Repellent Corporation, Spokane, Wash.) as a blackbird (Icteridae) repellent in Missouri rice fields and North Dakota sunflower fields. We selected 5 pairs of ripening rice fields in southeastern Missouri and randomly allocated treatments (treated and control) within pairs. The repellent was aerially applied by fixed-winged aircraft at the recommended label rate and volume (1.17 L Bird Shield/ha and 46.7 L/ha, respectively); 1 field received 2X the label rate. We …

The Unionid Mussels (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Unionidae) Of Missouri River Floodplain Ditches In Fremont County Southwestern Iowa And Atchison And Holt Counties Northwestern Missouri, Ellet Hoke

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A survey of ditches in the Missouri River floodplain in southwestern Iowa and northwestern Missouri resulted in the recovery of nine unionid mollusk species. The floodplain ditches may provide valuable habitat for mussels in a region that has suffered a tremendous decrease in productive aquatic habitats over the past sixty-eight years. Additional survey activity is needed to determine the complete inventory of unionid mollusks in the area.

Hands Off Policy: Equal Protection And The Contact Sports Exemption Of Title Ix, Jamal Greene Jan 2005

Hands Off Policy: Equal Protection And The Contact Sports Exemption Of Title Ix, Jamal Greene

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

The disparity between what the Constitution permits of public schools and what Title IX permits of private ones is unquestionably stark. This Article calls this disparity into question. First, it asks under what circumstances, if any, allowance for sex discrimination in athletics may be justified under constitutional standards. Then, it considers the practical relevance of the disparity between how a school may lawfully discriminate under Title IX and how it may do so under the Equal Protection Clause. Finally, it offers a prescription for bringing into balance the gender equity messages sent by Title IX and the Constitution.

The Passage Of Community Property Laws, 1939-1947: Was "More Than Money" Involved?, Jennifer E. Sturiale Jan 2005

The Passage Of Community Property Laws, 1939-1947: Was "More Than Money" Involved?, Jennifer E. Sturiale

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

Part I of this article reviews the legal landscape that provided the backdrop against which Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Pennsylvania later adopted community property laws. It also examines the tax consequences of the two Supreme Court cases, Lucas v. Earl and Poe v. Seaborn, that resulted in the disparate tax treatment of married couples in common law and community property law states. Part II briefly reviews the subsequent passage of community property laws by Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Pennsylvania; the passage of a federal tax reduction bill that provided for equal treatment of community property law and …

"Has The Millennium Yet Dawned?": A History Of Attitudes Toward Pregnant Workers In America, Courtni E. Molnar Jan 2005

"Has The Millennium Yet Dawned?": A History Of Attitudes Toward Pregnant Workers In America, Courtni E. Molnar

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This Article will focus on what might be considered the "prehistory" of the PDA in an attempt to shed new light on the equality/difference debate. Beginning as early as the nineteenth century, pregnant workers have been forced into either the equality approach or the difference approach depending mostly on race and class. This Article will show that, at times, both approaches restrained the autonomy of women and even caused harm to individual women and society by contributing to the development of the stereotypes and social attitudes that continue to permit pregnancy discrimination today.

Effect Of Calcium Lactate On Quality, Safety And Nutritional Senescence Parameters Of Minimally Processed Vegetables, Ana Belen Martin-Diana, Daniel Rico, Jesus Maria Frias, Jemina Mulcahy, Gary Henehan, Catherine Barry-Ryan Jan 2005

Effect Of Calcium Lactate On Quality, Safety And Nutritional Senescence Parameters Of Minimally Processed Vegetables, Ana Belen Martin-Diana, Daniel Rico, Jesus Maria Frias, Jemina Mulcahy, Gary Henehan, Catherine Barry-Ryan

Articles

Calcium lactate maintained quality senescence indicators, as well as chlorine in Iceberg lettuce, and enhanced nutritional values during storage in sliced carrots better than chlorine. Colour and texture objective measurements did not show differences between treatments for Iceberg lettuce; however there were differences in colour in sliced carrots, showing greater change in colour values in samples treated with chlorine. Calcium lactate washing treatments prevented the bleaching effect on saladcut lettuce and sliced carrots and also diminished the appearance of white surfaces over storage. The ascorbic acid decreased during storage independently of the type of treatment used for both vegetables, however …

It has been shown that 1-oleoyl lysophosphatid ic acid (LPA; 1-acyl-2-glycerol-3-phosphate) plays a vital role in the progression and proliferation of ovarian cancer. The design and synthesis of LPA receptor selective agonists and antagonists has been the focus of intense research within the last ten years .1 During the Research Experience for Undergraduate s (REU) internship at the University of Virginia 4-bromo-2-(hydroxymethyl)pyridine (intermediate 43) was designed and synthesized based on earlier results. Intermediate 43 was used to modify a current LPA analogue. Modification of current LPA analogues may result in the discovery of potent and metabolically stable LPA antagonists …

Law, Medicine, And Religion: Towards A Dialogue And A Partnership In Biomedical Technology And Decision Making, George P. Smith Ii Jan 2005

Law, Medicine, And Religion: Towards A Dialogue And A Partnership In Biomedical Technology And Decision Making, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

Faith, religion, spirituality, and prayer have a current focused outreach and easy parlance in the market places and public squares of the nation. News stories and court cases abound with dramatic challenges to the placement of monuments to the Ten Commandments in public buildings and grounds, the use of God's name in school pledges of allegiance, the teaching of Darwinian or evolutionary science in public education, the role of faith and religion in health care healing, and even the value of affirmations of religious faith on the political hustings. The purpose of this article is to explore the conjunctive and …

The Disintegration Of Modern Culture. Nietzsche And The Information Age, Edgar Landgraf Jan 2005

The Disintegration Of Modern Culture. Nietzsche And The Information Age, Edgar Landgraf

German Faculty Publications

The article revisits Nietzsche’s provocative claim that the Enlightenment’s emphasis on education and open exchange of information promotes rather than prevents the “loss of meaning” from a media studies and systems theoretical perspective. Nietzsche in fact ties what he understands as modern culture’s disintegration to information-processing modes of modern society, that is, as effects of the modern educational system and the mass media (at his time, the printing press). The article argues that while Nietzsche is an astute observer of modernity, his call for a return to a more authentic culture (with its daunting political implications) is indicative of Nietzsche’s …

Ecological Influences On The Developmental Status Of Parents Of Adolescents, Elise N. Cantor Jan 2005

Ecological Influences On The Developmental Status Of Parents Of Adolescents, Elise N. Cantor

Doctoral Dissertations

This study takes an ecological approach to the examination of developmental status of adults in middle adulthood, with a focus on parents of adolescents, investigating adults' developmental statuses with respect to their children's development. Hypotheses predicted ecological variables would related with middle adult development, defined in terms of generativity, identity certainty, and identity concern. Children's development, social support, stress, personality, well-being, and background variables were investigated in analyses. It was further hypothesized that social support and stress would mediate the relation between child and adult development.

The sample for the present study was composed of 126 parents-child pairs. Parents were …

Visualizing The Invisible: The Role Of Race And White Racial Identity In The Teaching And Pedagogy Of New Esol Teachers, Tonda Liggett Jan 2005

Visualizing The Invisible: The Role Of Race And White Racial Identity In The Teaching And Pedagogy Of New Esol Teachers, Tonda Liggett

Doctoral Dissertations

The nature of my dissertation inquiry and my overall argument explore the role that white racial identity has in the teaching and pedagogy of new ESOL teachers. Throughout this dissertation I argue for better understandings of race to raise awareness of how knowledge systems are socially constructed to support a level of inequality that disadvantages ESOL students of color. As ESOL teachers begin their work, I question how their white racial identity and cultural positionality influence their perceptions of diverse groups of English language learners and how these perceptions influence their teaching.

I focus on the social construction of knowledge …

Spatial Distribution Of The Common Loon (Gavia Immer) In New Hampshire, Mark W. Brennan Jan 2005

Spatial Distribution Of The Common Loon (Gavia Immer) In New Hampshire, Mark W. Brennan

Doctoral Dissertations

The Common Loon (Gavia immer) is located in many portions of North America. By the early 1970's the Common Loon population in New Hampshire had experienced a dramatic decline in historic numbers. In 1975, the Audubon Society of New Hampshire recognized this problem and established the Loon Preservation Committee (LPC). The intent was to collect information regarding the presence or absence of loons and loon productivity, and, educate the public regarding loon ecology and preservation. This dissertation represents the work completed to fulfill the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Natural Resources Management at the University of New …

Chemical Sensors Based On Swelling Polymer Microspheres And Uncrosslinked Fluorescently-Labelled Molecularly Imprinted Polymers, George K. Mwangi Jan 2005

Chemical Sensors Based On Swelling Polymer Microspheres And Uncrosslinked Fluorescently-Labelled Molecularly Imprinted Polymers, George K. Mwangi

Doctoral Dissertations

Polymer swelling can be achieved by derivatizing a functional group onto the polymer that selectively binds a particular analyte. For example, at low pH, the particles in a hydrogel membrane swell in response to the increased hydrogen ion concentration and the membrane reflects less light. When the refractive index of the membrane is less than that of the particles, swelling decreases the refractive index of the particles. This brings it closer to the refractive index of the membrane, and decreases the scattering of light making the membrane more transparent.

On the other hand if the refractive index of the membrane …

The Nature Of Dissection: Exploring Student Conceptions, Katharine York Jan 2005

The Nature Of Dissection: Exploring Student Conceptions, Katharine York

Doctoral Dissertations

The model of conceptual change in science describes the process of learning as a complete restructuring of knowledge, when learners discover or are shown more plausible, intelligent alternatives to existing conceptions. Emotions have been acknowledged as part of a learner's conceptual ecology, but the effects of emotions on learning have yet to be described. This research was conducted to examine the role that emotions have on learning for thirteen high school students, as they dissected cats in a Human Anatomy and Physiology class. The project also investigated whether a student's emotional reactions may be used to develop a sense of …

The Taxonomic And Systematic Relationships Of Several Salt Marsh Fucus Taxa (Heterokontophyta, Phaeophyceae) Within The Gulf Of Maine And Ireland Examined Using Microsatellite Markers, Aaron L. Wallace Jan 2005

The Taxonomic And Systematic Relationships Of Several Salt Marsh Fucus Taxa (Heterokontophyta, Phaeophyceae) Within The Gulf Of Maine And Ireland Examined Using Microsatellite Markers, Aaron L. Wallace

Doctoral Dissertations

The present thesis utilizes microsatellite markers to examine genetic affinities between several salt marsh Fucus ecads in order to ascertain their relationships with attached parental species. Chapter I provides an introduction to the genus Fucus and discusses morphological plasticity, systematic difficulties, and studies of hybridization between different Fucus species.

Chapter II describes my development of microsatellite markers for Fucus. Four polymorphic microsatellite loci were used to determine the origin of a dwarf muscoides-like Fucus from the Brave Boat Harbor (ME) salt marsh. Similar forms were originally described in Europe, and appear to be derived from F. vesiculosus L. However, my …

The Controls Of Watershed Nutrient Export, Wilfred M. Wollheim Jan 2005

The Controls Of Watershed Nutrient Export, Wilfred M. Wollheim

Doctoral Dissertations

Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) loading has increased considerably in recent times, yet only a small proportion is generally exported to the coast from most watersheds. This dissertation addresses some of the factors controlling N export from watersheds. The focus is on (1) how N export and N retention change with increased urbanization, and (2) how river networks modify N that is loaded to them.

Urbanization is a major perturbation of the land surface. Chapter 1 uses a budget approach to assess how N retention changes with increased urbanization in small headwater catchments in northeastern Massachusetts, USA. Water runoff, N loading, and …
