The Effect Of Immediate Feedback And After Action Reviews (Aars) On Learning, Retention And Transfer, Michael Sanders Jan 2005

The Effect Of Immediate Feedback And After Action Reviews (Aars) On Learning, Retention And Transfer, Michael Sanders

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An After Action Review (AAR) is the Army training system's performance feedback mechanism. The purpose of the AAR is to improve team (unit) and individual performance in order to increase organizational readiness. While a large body of knowledge exists that discusses instructional strategies, feedback and training systems, neither the AAR process nor the AAR systems have been examined in terms of learning effectiveness and efficiency for embedded trainers as part of a holistic training system. In this thesis, different feedback methods for embedded training are evaluated based on the timing and type of feedback used during and after training exercises. …

Historical Roots Of Regional Sentencing Variation, The Symposium, Ian Weinstein Jan 2005

Historical Roots Of Regional Sentencing Variation, The Symposium, Ian Weinstein

Faculty Scholarship

I am a law professor and a criminal defense lawyer, not a historian. It is with some trepidation that I stand before you to suggest that our very persistent regional sentencing variations have roots in the political struggles of Reformation England and the cultures of the subgroups that populated the first American colonies. I rely upon others for the historical proof, as you will see, but I think I do have standing to argue to you that we should consider whether or not there is room, even in federal sentencing, to account for deeply embedded regional variations in our basic …

On The Utility Of Stochastic Models Of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Rebecca Boehm Jan 2005

On The Utility Of Stochastic Models Of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Rebecca Boehm

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive and irreversible lung disease characterized by reduced lung function, abnormal inflammatory response, dyspnea, increased sputum production, and costly and debilitating exacerbations. Common treatments for COPD include smoking cessation therapy, short- and long-acting bronchodilators, inhaled corticosteroids, pulmonary rehabilitation, and home oxygen therapy. However, a recent meta-analysis demonstrated that inhaled corticosteroids fail to slow the decline in FEV1, the primary clinical marker of COPD progression. In addition, some evidence exists to suggest that long-term inhaled corticosteroid use may increase bone density loss, leading to osteoporosis. Given that the bone health effects of inhaled corticosteroid …

Emasculating The Philosophy Of International Criminal Justice In The Iraqi Special Tribunal, Farhad Malekian Jan 2005

Emasculating The Philosophy Of International Criminal Justice In The Iraqi Special Tribunal, Farhad Malekian

Cornell International Law Journal

In this article in the Symposium on Milosevic & Hussein on Trial, the author argues that the principle of international tribunality of jurisdiction is a form of globalization of international criminal justice that has the purpose of preventing the problems seen in the Iraqi Special Tribunal (IST) & the monopolization of international law by the United Nations Charter. Examination of historical, contemporary, & prospective approaches to the system of international law concerning the prosecution & punishment of individuals questions whether the laws of the IST reflect the basic foundations of international criminal justice. The principles of the Criminal Justice System …

Justice, Power, And The Realities Of Interdependence: Lessons From The Milosevic And Hussein Trials, Payam Akhavan Jan 2005

Justice, Power, And The Realities Of Interdependence: Lessons From The Milosevic And Hussein Trials, Payam Akhavan

Cornell International Law Journal

In this essay in the Symposium on Milosevic & Hussein on Trial, the author discusses issues of interdependence to argue that, although military power can eliminate threats in the short term, in an inextricably interdependent world long term peace can only be sustained by legitimacy. The author's personal experiences at a meeting on the "ethnic cleansing" in the Balkans prior to the creation of the International Criminal Tribunal on the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) are related to the success of "soft power" in judicial disguise, & the relationship between justice for others & political identity in liberal democracies. A historical narrative …

Composting Of Feedlot Manure: Compost Characteristics, Crop Yields And Application Rates, Casey B. Wilson, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Walker Luedtke, Mark A. Schroeder Jan 2005

Composting Of Feedlot Manure: Compost Characteristics, Crop Yields And Application Rates, Casey B. Wilson, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Walker Luedtke, Mark A. Schroeder

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Crop yields were measured using no-compost check strips in large-scale production fields to determine the impact of a one-time compost application. Adding compost to irrigated corn, irrigated soybeans and dryland corn acres significantly increased yields. Altering the application rate from 0 to 20 to 40 ton per acre did not significantly increase grain yield. However, all yields made biological improvements under irrigated conditions when compost was added.

Recognition And Treatment Of Adolescent Substance Abuse: Who Are The Substance Abusers?, Lori Beckwith, Shea Bailey Jan 2005

Recognition And Treatment Of Adolescent Substance Abuse: Who Are The Substance Abusers?, Lori Beckwith, Shea Bailey

Perspectives In Learning

There is a serious threat to the health and well being of America today: the threat of substance abuse. It affects everyone on some level: the friend’s child who is always in trouble with the law, the family member whose activities are kept secret, or the work colleague who habitually calls in sick. For many, the abuser lives in their own home. The problem of abuse is not discriminating; it can even start in early adolescence. When the individual who is using is an adolescent, it affects their parents, peers, school, and community. In a study by the U.S. Department …

Praise And Promises, Donna Greschner Jan 2005

Praise And Promises, Donna Greschner

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

During the past 20 years, equality jurisprudence has not followed a straight line. But it does have points and patterns. This paper offers 15 points about section 15 that are divided into two categories: reasons for praise, and promises still to keep. They aim to place the jurisprudence in a celebratory, comparative, and critical context. Many of us reflecting upon the past 20 years have personal memories of the Charter’s entrenchment in 1982 and section 15’s activation in 1985. Legal events and processes are intertwined with personal stories. While the author connect points in a particular way, draw your own …

The German Parental-Leave System As A Model For California: Creating A Race To The Top Within A Federal System, Dirk Larsen Jan 2005

The German Parental-Leave System As A Model For California: Creating A Race To The Top Within A Federal System, Dirk Larsen

UC Law SF International Law Review

When the U.S. Congress was drafting the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, it looked to Germany as an example of a country with generous family-leave policies as well as a strong economy. Due to opposition from the business sector and reluctance to regulate family life, the resulting legislation was much weaker than its German counterpart. Since that time, Germany's social order proved less self-sustaining than previously thought. The author compares the relative merits, successes, and failures of Germany's and California's parental-leave policies and suggests that California could stand to benefit by adopting modified aspects of the German model …

Ascertaining The Growth Of A Company A System Dynamics Approach, Fakir Mohideen Noor Mohideen Jan 2005

Ascertaining The Growth Of A Company A System Dynamics Approach, Fakir Mohideen Noor Mohideen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Business is often about creating change for other businesses. At times, these changes affect only the company and at other times they affect the entire industry. There is a time in the life of a business when its fundamental way of functioning is questioned and is subjected to change. That change can mean an opportunity to rise to new heights, or it might even signal the beginning of the end. This fundamental change in any business is known as an inflection point. Understanding the nature of its inflection point and responding to that point suitably will help to safeguard a …

Detection Of The R-Wave In Ecg Signals, Sasanka Valluri Jan 2005

Detection Of The R-Wave In Ecg Signals, Sasanka Valluri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis aims at providing a new approach for detecting R-waves in the ECG signal and generating the corresponding R-wave impulses with the delay between the original R-waves and the R-wave impulses being lesser than 100 ms. The algorithm was implemented in Matlab and tested with good results against 90 different ECG recordings from the MIT-BIH database. The Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) forms the heart of the algorithm providing a multi-resolution analysis of the ECG signal. The wavelet transform decomposes the ECG signal into frequency scales where the ECG characteristic waveforms are indicated by zero crossings. The adaptive threshold algorithms …

A New Paradigm Of Modeling Watershed Water Quality, Fan Zhang Jan 2005

A New Paradigm Of Modeling Watershed Water Quality, Fan Zhang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Accurate models to reliably predict sediment and chemical transport in watershed water systems enhance the ability of environmental scientists, engineers and decision makers to analyze the impact of contamination problems and to evaluate the efficacy of alternative remediation techniques and management strategies prior to incurring expense in the field. This dissertation presents the conceptual and mathematical development of a general numerical model simulating (1) sediment and reactive chemical transport in river/stream networks of watershed systems; (2) sediment and reactive chemical transport in overland shallow water of watershed systems; and (3) reactive chemical transport in three-dimensional subsurface systems. Through the decomposition …
