Miniaturized Lead Sensor Based On Lead-Specific Dnazyme In A Nanocapillary Interconnected Microfluidic Device, In-Hyoung Chang, Joseph J. Tulock, Juewen Liu, Won-Suk Kim, Donald M. Cannon, Jr., Yi Lu, Paul W. Bohn, Jonathan V. Sweedler, Donald M. Cropek

United States Army: Publications

A miniaturized lead sensor has been developed by combining a lead-specific DNAzyme with a microfabricated device containing a network of microfluidic channels that are fluidically coupled via a nanocapillary array interconnect. A DNAzyme construct, selective for cleavage in the presence of Pb2+ and derivatized with fluorophore (quencher) at the 5’ (3’) end of the substrate and enzyme strands, respectively, forms a molecular beacon that is used as the recognition element. The nanocapillary array membrane interconnect is used to manipulate fluid flows and deliver the small-volume sample to the beacon in a spatially confined detection window where the DNAzyme is …

Improving Pilot Mental Workload Classification Through Feature Exploitation And Combination: A Feasibility Study, Jeremy B. Noel, Kenneth W. Bauer, Jr., Jeffrey W. Lanning Jan 2005

Improving Pilot Mental Workload Classification Through Feature Exploitation And Combination: A Feasibility Study, Jeremy B. Noel, Kenneth W. Bauer, Jr., Jeffrey W. Lanning

United States Air Force: Publications

Predicting high pilot mental workload is important to the United States Air Force because lives and aircraft have been lost due to errors made during periods of flight associated with mental overload and task saturation. Current research efforts use psychophysiological measures such as electroencephalography (EEG), cardiac, ocular, and respiration measures in an attempt to identify and predict mental workload levels. Existing classification methods successfully classify pilot mental workload using flight data for a single pilot on a given day, but are unsuccessful across different pilots and/or days. We demonstrate a small subset of combined and calibrated psychophysiological features collected from …

A Longitudinal Study Of Phonological Processing Skills And Reading In Bilingual Children, Alexandra Gottardo, Adèle Lafrance Jan 2005

A Longitudinal Study Of Phonological Processing Skills And Reading In Bilingual Children, Alexandra Gottardo, Adèle Lafrance

Psychology Faculty Publications

French/English bilingual children (N=40) in French language schools participated in an 8-month longitudinal study of the relation between phonological processing skills and reading in French and English. Participants were administered measures of phonological awareness, working memory, naming speed, and reading in both languages. The results of the concurrent analyses show that phonological awareness skills in both French and English were uniquely predictive of reading performance in both languages after accounting for the influences of cognitive ability, reading ability, working memory, and naming speed. These findings support the hypothesis that phonological awareness is strongly related to beginning word reading …

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

Excavations in 1990 in North-West Iceland documented a stratified series of small turf structures and associated midden deposits at the eroding beach at Akurvík which date from the 11th–13th to the 15th–16th centuries AD. The site reflects a long series of small discontinuous occupations, probably associated with seasonal fishing. The shell sand matrix had allowed excellent organic preservation, and an archaeofauna of more than 100,000 identifiable fragments was recovered. The collections are dominated by fish, mainly Atlantic cod, but substantial amounts of whale bone suggest extensive exploitation of strandings or active whaling. This paper briefly summarizes the excavation results, presents …

Pollution Without Solution: Flow Impairment Problems Under Clean Water Act Section 303, Reed D. Benson Jan 2005

Pollution Without Solution: Flow Impairment Problems Under Clean Water Act Section 303, Reed D. Benson

Faculty Scholarship

"This Article deals with one section of the CWA, section 303, and its implications for flow-impaired streams and related policy issues. While the CWA's main thrust is controlling pollution from "point sources" through a system of permits and technology-based effluent limits, section 303 takes a different approach, focusing on the quality of individual waterbodies and requiring corrective steps for each one that falls below standards. Section 303 addresses not only point source discharges, but other human activities that affect the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the nation's waters, including pollution from non-point sources, and perhaps even flow impairment. Thus, …

The Supreme Court Of Science Speaks On Water Rights: The National Academy Of Sciences Columbia River Report And Its Water Policy Implications, Reed D. Benson

Faculty Scholarship

Professor Benson reviews the Report on Columbia River water withdrawals and their effects on salmon recently issued by the National Academy of Sciences to the Washington State Department of Ecology, the agency responsible for managing Washingtons water withdrawals from the Columbia and its tributaries. After reviewing the Report, Professor Benson compares its recommendations with western water law's doctrine of prior appropriation and finds that many of the Report's recommendations are in direct conflict with prior appropriation principles. Finally, Professor Benson discusses the potential impact of the Report on water law in Washington and throughout the West. He concludes that, because …

The independent variables were biological sex, categorized as male and female, and amount of training in working with sex offenders, categorized as none versus some. Three hundred and fourteen participants were included in this study and a 2 x 2 Factorial ANOVA was conducted. An interaction between biological sex and training was found. Without training, female psychologists held more negative attitudes toward sex offenders than male psychologists without training. With training, female psychologists' attitudes toward sex offenders were slightly more positive than their male counterparts. A significant main effect …

Polyphosphate And Polyphosphate Kinase Activity In Helicobacter Pylori 26695 Survival, Rosaline Victoria Waworuntu Jan 2005

Polyphosphate And Polyphosphate Kinase Activity In Helicobacter Pylori 26695 Survival, Rosaline Victoria Waworuntu

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many bacteria store energy and phosphate in the form of polyphosphate. Polyphosphate is involved in mRNA processing and degradation and is a regulator for stress responses in certain bacteria. The synthesis of polyphosphate is mediated by the reversible action of polyphosphate kinase (PPK). In H. pylori , accumulation of polyphosphate has been observed under anaerobic conditions and during formation of unculturable, coccoid forms at stationary phase. Previous observations in our laboratory showed that H. pylori significantly reduced the rate of phosphate uptake under acidic conditions, indicating that polyphosphates may be an alternative phosphate source during growth in acid. This study …

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The fetal basis of adult disease (FeBAD) hypothesis states that many adult diseases have a fetal origin. According to FeBAD, injury or environmental influences occurring at critical periods of organ development could result in “programmatic” changes via alterations in gene expression or gene imprinting that may result in functional deficits that become apparent later in life. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that is characterized by excessive deposits of aggregated β-amyloid (Aβ) peptides, which are snippets of the β-amyloid precursor protein (APP). The predominately sporadic nature of AD suggests that the environment must play a role in neurodegeneration. …

Using Multi-Stack And Variable-Speed-Drive Systems To Reduce Laboratory Exhaust Fan Energy, Gang Wang, Mingsheng Liu Jan 2005

Using Multi-Stack And Variable-Speed-Drive Systems To Reduce Laboratory Exhaust Fan Energy, Gang Wang, Mingsheng Liu

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

In buildings that contain laboratories, fume hoods are normally used to control contaminant concentrations. Exhaust stacks with a constant exit velocity are required to make sure that dangerous concentrations do not occur in occupied areas near the building or on the roof top. To achieve constant velocity when exhaust flow rates are less than design, makeup air is introduced to the system at the inlet of the exhaust fan. Since laboratory exhaust airflow is often significantly less than the design airflow, exhaust fans consume significantly more energy than is necessary. To reduce exhaust fan energy, techniques involving multiple exhaust stacks …

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"I knew I shouldn't be there, but I was there just the same. I had no business peeking into the window of this strange man, in this strange town. But that was the funny thing. This man shouldn't be strange to me. And if things had turned out differently, I might have actually lived in this town. But things hadn't turned out differently, and everything was strange. I was strange. My childhood was strange. My father had left our family more than nineteen years ago, and I hadn't even …

Evidence For A Role For Anti-Müllerian Hormone In The Suppression Of Follicle Activation In Mouse Ovaries And Bovine Ovarian Cortex Grafted Beneath The Chick Chorioallantoic Membrane, I. Gigli, R. A. Cushman, C. M. Wahl, J. E. Fortune Jan 2005

Evidence For A Role For Anti-Müllerian Hormone In The Suppression Of Follicle Activation In Mouse Ovaries And Bovine Ovarian Cortex Grafted Beneath The Chick Chorioallantoic Membrane, I. Gigli, R. A. Cushman, C. M. Wahl, J. E. Fortune

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

The first critical transition in follicular development, the activation of primordial follicles to leave the pool of resting follicles and begin growth, is poorly understood, but it appears that the balance between inhibitory and stimulatory factors is important in regulating the exodus of follicles from the resting pool. There is evidence that anti-Mu¨llerian hormone (AMH; also known as MIS) inhibits follicle activation in mice, but whether it plays a similar role in non rodent species is not known. When pieces of bovine ovarian cortex, rich in primordial follicles, are cultured in serum-free medium, most follicles initiate growth, but when cortical …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The potential of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis (Acarina: Phytoseiidae) to control the carmine spider mite Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Acarina: Tetranychidae) on strawberries (cv. ´Camarosa`) grown under plastic tunnels was investigated in 2 fields during the 2001 and 2002 growing seasons in Aydın, Turkey. Three study plots, grower's practice, chemical control and biological control, were established. The population of T. cinnabarinus was controlled in the grower's practice plots by using 1 or 2 acaricide applications. However, it was suppressed with only 1 acaricide application in the chemical control plots at a population level below economic threshold levels. When the pest population …
