The Hrpk Operon Of Pseudomonas Syringae Pv. Tomato Dc3000 Encodes Two Proteins Secreted By The Type Iii (Hrp) Protein Secretion System: Hopb1 And Hrpk, A Putative Type Iii Translocator, Tanja Petnicki-Ocwieja, Karin V. Van Dijk, James R. Alfano

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Pseudomonas syringae is a gram-negative bacterial plant pathogen that is dependent on a type III protein secretion system (TTSS) and the effector proteins it translocates into plant cells for pathogenicity. The P. syringae TTSS is encoded by hrp-hrc genes that reside in a central region of a pathogenicity island (Pai). Flanking one side of this Pai is the exchangeable effector locus (EEL). We characterized the transcriptional expression of the open reading frames (ORFs) within the EEL of P. syringae pv. tomato DC3000. One of these ORFs, PSPTO1406 (hopB1) is expressed in the same transcriptional unit as hrpK. …

The Best Medicine, Krissy Kunkel

e-Vision Journal of Undergraduate Writing

In those childhood days I can only remember the laughter and the fun. I never worried or had a stressful day. In fact, the only thing I worried about was when I would be taking my nap and what I would be eating for lunch. There were no troubling relationships to mend and no time consuming papers to write.

Krissy Kunkel is a freshman biology major. Taking GWRIT her first semester at JMU under the guidance of Dr. Pipkins was one of the best experiences she has had at JMU. "I learned to express myself [through] writing and to take …

The Ultraviolet Protection Factor Of Naturally-Pigmented Cotton, Patricia Cox Crews, Gwendolyn Hustvedt Jan 2005

The Ultraviolet Protection Factor Of Naturally-Pigmented Cotton, Patricia Cox Crews, Gwendolyn Hustvedt

Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications

Textile Technology: The sun-blocking properties of a textile are enhanced when a dye, pigment, delustrant, or ultraviolet absorber finish is present that absorbs ultraviolet radiation and blocks its transmission through a fabric to the skin. For this reason, dyed fabrics provide better sun protection than bleached fabrics. Since naturally-colored cottons contain pigments that produce shades ranging from light green to tan and brown, it seemed reasonable to postulate that they would provide better sun protection than conventional bleached cotton, and that natural pigments might prove more durable to laundering and light exposure than dyes, but there is no published research …

Drought Preparedness Planning: Building Institutional Capacity, Donald A. Wilhite, Michael Hayes, Cody L. Knutson

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Past attempts to manage drought and its impacts through a reactive, crisis management approach have been ineffective, poorly coordinated, and untimely, as illustrated by the hydro- illogical cycle in Figure 1. The crisis management approach has been followed in both developed and developing countries. Because of the ineffectiveness of this approach, greater interest has evolved in recent years in the adoption of a more proactive risk-based management approach in some countries (see Chapter 6). Other countries are striving to obtain a higher level of preparedness through development of national action programs that are part of the United Nations Convention to …

Biofibers From Agricultural Byproducts For Industrial Applications, Narendra Reddy, Yiqi Yang

Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications

Lignocellulosic agricultural byproducts are a copious and cheap source for cellulose fibers. Agro-based biofibers have the composition, properties and structure that make them suitable for uses such as composite, textile, pulp and paper manufacture. In addition, biofibers can also be used to produce fuel, chemicals, enzymes and food. Byproducts produced from the cultivation of corn, wheat, rice, sorghum, barley, sugarcane, pineapple, banana and coconut are the major sources of agro-based biofibers. This review analyses the production processes, structure, properties and suitability of these biofibers for various industrial applications.

Aspects Of An Interior Stream Clam Midden From 1915 At Quasqueton, Buchanan County Iowa, Dennis W. Schlicht

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

During clam surveys on the Wapsipinicon River in 1991 buried clams were observed in a bank of the river at Quasqueton, Buchanan County, Iowa. An interview with the landowner revealed that the clams were from a 1915 local clamming operation. Excavation and examination of many of the clams reveal interesting differences in species composition and size, when compared to more recent specimens from the river. Observations on the midden were recorded, species determinations were made and measurements were taken. Comparisons are made to two other modern surface surveys on the river. Differences were observed in both species composition and shell …

Fertilizer Recommendations Guide, Jim Gerwig, Ron Gelderman Jan 2005

Fertilizer Recommendations Guide, Jim Gerwig, Ron Gelderman

SDSU Extension Circulars

South Dakota State University Soil Testing Lab fertilizer recommendations are based on field research in South Dakota and neighboring states. However, information from outside this region is used where only limited local data was available. The tables were developed as part of continuing cooperation between these states to standardize recommendations across the three-state area. The recommendations in the tables are generated by equations and, therefore, change consistently across yield goals and soil test levels. Due to space limitations, only the recommendations for selected yield goals and the soil test level at the center of each soil test range (very low, …

Phylogeography Of A Stream-Dwelling Frog (Pseudacris Cadaverina) In Southern California, Ivan Clayton Phillipsen Jan 2005

Phylogeography Of A Stream-Dwelling Frog (Pseudacris Cadaverina) In Southern California, Ivan Clayton Phillipsen

Theses Digitization Project

Investigates the genetic differentiation of California treefrog (Pseudacris cadaverina) populations among and within the 16 major southern California watersheds, four of which drain into desert basins. An 1100 bp portion of the mitochondrial genome, including most of the cytochrome b gene, was sequenced for 221 individuals from 46 populations. Results indicate that the broad-scale geographic distribution of genetic diversity in the California treefrog is due in large part to the separation of populations into different major watersheds and mountain ranges.

We established a genetic linkage map employing 518 simple sequence repeat (SSR, or microsatellite) markers for Bombyx mori (silkworm), the economically and culturally important lepidopteran insect, as part of an international genomics program. A survey of six representative silkworm strains using 2,500 (CA)n- and (CT)n-based SSR markers revealed 17-24% polymorphism, indicating a high degree of homozygosity resulting from a long history of inbreeding. Twenty-nine SSR linkage groups were established in well characterized Dazao and C108 strains based on genotyping of 189 backcross progeny derived from an F1 male mated with a C108 female. The clustering was further focused to …

A Vulnerability Assessment Methodology For Critical Infrastructure Sites, George Baker Jan 2005

A Vulnerability Assessment Methodology For Critical Infrastructure Sites, George Baker

Selected Works

Highly efficient, complex, and interdependent infrastructure systems including electric power, telecommunications, transportation, water utilities, food distribution, housing and shelter, public health, finance and banking are foundations of modern societies. Over the last 3 years, the United States has become acutely aware of the importance of civil infrastructures and their criticality to the nation’s economy and quality of life. Our reliance on these systems makes them especially attractive targets for attack. To understand and correct exploitable susceptibilities of critical infrastructure facilities, infrastructure providers and regional planners need a common, repeatable, systematic methodology to understand the comparative risks and vulnerabilities and determine …

Does Genertic Variation Support Geographical And Morphological Patterns? A Phylogentic Interpretation Of Mentha Longifolia (Lamiaceae) Using Molecular Data, Kate L. Hertwick Jan 2005

Does Genertic Variation Support Geographical And Morphological Patterns? A Phylogentic Interpretation Of Mentha Longifolia (Lamiaceae) Using Molecular Data, Kate L. Hertwick

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Traditional taxonomic studies ofMentha longifolia (European horsemint) have utilized geographical and morphological criteria to classify and define the species. This has led to the recognition of 22 different M longifolia subspecies from Europe, the Middle East, central Asia, and southern Africa. Using nucleotide sequences of chloroplast and nuclear DNA regions of 23 accessions of M. longifolia, we assessed levels of genetic divergence to determine if discrete groupings exist. The results ofthis phylogeographic study indicate that there is sufficient variation among samples to warrant splitting of M. longifolia into several different taxa. For example, two subspecies from South Africa share distinct …

Polar Measurements Of Mesospheric Co, Susannah Burrows Jan 2005

Polar Measurements Of Mesospheric Co, Susannah Burrows

Honors Papers

An optically thin layer of carbon monoxide in the Earth's mesosphere results in strong, sharp emission peaks at CO's rotational transition frequencies. The J = 2 → 1 and J = 4 → 3 transitions were observed by the Antarctic Sub-millimeter Telescope / Remote Observatory (AST/RO), located at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station. Mesospheric wind speeds were calculated from the Doppler shifts in emission spectra, as determined by least-squares fitting.

Flaws In Orr’S Laws (And The Paradigm That Produced Them): An Abbreviated Response, Nicole Haynes Mccoy, Sheldon Atwood Jan 2005

Flaws In Orr’S Laws (And The Paradigm That Produced Them): An Abbreviated Response, Nicole Haynes Mccoy, Sheldon Atwood

Behavioral Education for Human, Animal, Vegetation, and Ecosystem Management (BEHAVE)

Conservation of biological diversity is often hampered by ignorance and short-sightedness. Yet knowledge is not enough; biology illuminates ecological relationships, but it alone cannot conserve ecosystems. Therefore, we agree that there is no higher priority for conservation biologists than to improve their understanding of economics (Orr 2004, Law 1). Unfortunately, from many of his comments and the tenor of subsequent responses (Hayes 2004; Vitek 2004; Lovejoy 2004), it is evident that economics and, more important, parallels between ecology and economics are misunderstood, implying the two disciplines are more different than they are and that knowledge of economics is primarily needed …

Women: Support Factors And Persistence In Engineering, John R. Duncan, Yong Zeng Jan 2005

Women: Support Factors And Persistence In Engineering, John R. Duncan, Yong Zeng

Reports of Center Studies

Limited information is available regarding the factors that promote persistence by women in engineering programs. Stated simply, the problem is that the number of women engineers continues to fall short in comparison to the gender ratio of women to men in the population in the U.S. (BEST, 2002) and worldwide (Hersh, 2000). More women engineers are needed in general and in proportion to male engineers. This study addressed two questions. (1) What are the factors that support women in engineering? and (2) What are the factors that attract women to and help them to persist in a career in engineering? …
