Playful Sciencing And The Early Childhood Classroom, Barbara Mary Kirby
Theses Digitization Project
The purpose of this project is to examine the power of play, guided discovery, and hands-on experiences in the early childhood classroom, specifically as it relates to early childhood science experience. This paper will also propose a science curriculum encompassing a hands-on, guided discovery, play-based approach.
Serving Students With Asperger Syndrome In The General Education Classroom, Jennifer Dawn Hendricks
Serving Students With Asperger Syndrome In The General Education Classroom, Jennifer Dawn Hendricks
All Graduate Projects
The identification and prevalence of students with Asperger Syndrome (AS) in schools throughout the U.S. appears to be rapidly increasing (Barnhill, 2001a). Lamarine (2001 ), states that, "Epidemiological evidence suggests that AS may affect approximately 7 out of every 1,000 people" (p. 152). Many students identified as having AS are served in both special and general education classrooms. The purpose of this project was to emphasize the necessity of early identification and interventions, to review the characteristics of AS, and delineate best practice strategies for serving these students in the gen\:ral education classroom. The literature concerning teaching and learning for …
The Impact Of Anger Management Training On Students Of Skills For Managing Anger, Kristin Lynn Mitchell
The Impact Of Anger Management Training On Students Of Skills For Managing Anger, Kristin Lynn Mitchell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research has been to study the impact of anger management training on students of the Skills for Managing Anger (SMA) program used in the Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS). Conflict resolution programs are discussed as are causes of violence in school age children. The company that produces SMA suggests that its program can reduce verbal and physical violence and increase the use anger management strategies. SMA was observed from the teacher training throughout the 12 session course. An increased awareness of anger and of anger management was seen, however no evidence was found that verbal and physical …
The Role Of Histidine-Rich Proteins In The Biomineralization Of Hemozoin, Lisa Pasierb
The Role Of Histidine-Rich Proteins In The Biomineralization Of Hemozoin, Lisa Pasierb
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hemozoin formation, the consequential end product of the proteolysis of hemoglobin by Plasmodium falciparum, is essentially a biomineralization process whereby toxic free heme is aggregated into an inert crystalline solid, also known as malaria pigment or ß-hematin. The histidine-rich protein II (HPR II), isolated from the digestive vacuole of the parasite, has been implicated in the mediation of this biomineral through the protein's ability to bind heme, aggregate the biomineral, and be effectively inhibited by known antimalarials, including chloroquine. The HRP II sequence, which is comprised of 76% of histidine and alanine residues, has a specific amino acid repeat motif …

Use Of Cover And Response To Cover Type Edges By Female Sierra Nevada Red Foxes In Winter, John F. Benson, John D. Perrine, Richard T. Golightly Jr., Reginald H. Barrett
Biological Sciences
Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) use a variety of habitats across their range, including semiarid deserts, tundra, boreal forests, farmland, and urban areas (Larivière and Pasitschniak-Arts 1996). Within these habitats there is much variation in the use of different cover types among populations of red foxes (Jones and Theberge 1982, Halpin and Bissonette 1988, Theberge and Wedeles 1989, St-Georges et al. 1995). In Maine, red foxes used coniferous stands and open areas more than expected (Halpin and Bissonette 1988). In British Columbia, red foxes used shrub communities more than expected and open areas less than expected (Jones and Theberge 1982). In …

Removal Of P-Cresol Sulfate By Hemodialysis, Andres W. Martinez, Natalie S. Recht, Thomas H. Hostetter, Timothy W. Meyer
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Protein-bound solutes are poorly cleared by dialysis. Among the most extensively studied of these solutes is p-cresol, which has been shown to be toxic in vitro. This study examined the form in which p-cresol circulates and quantified its removal by hemodialysis. HPLC analysis of plasma from hemodialysis patients contained a peak whose mobility corresponded to synthetic p-cresol sulfate (PCS) but no detectable unconjugated p-cresol. Treatment with sulfatase resulted in recovery of this peak as p-cresol, confirming its identity. Subsequent studies compared the removal of PCS and another protein-bound solute, indican, to the removal of urea during clinical hemodialysis treatments. …
