Day Vs. Night Sampling For Spiders In Grape Vineyards, Michael J. Costello, Kent M. Daane Jan 2005

Day Vs. Night Sampling For Spiders In Grape Vineyards, Michael J. Costello, Kent M. Daane

Horticulture and Crop Science

We compared day sampling (between 0700 and 1100) and night sampling (between 1900 and 2300) of spiders on grapevines in a California vineyard in 1993 and 1994, shaking spiders from the vines onto a drop cloth and vacuuming them up. Pooled density of the seven most abundant spider species did not differ significantly between day and night sampling, nor did density of Cheiracanthium inclusum (Miturgidae), Trachelas pacificus (Corrinidae), Oxyopes spp. (Oxyopidae) or Neoscona oaxacensis (Araneidae). Under day sampling Metaphidippus vitis (Salticidae) was 60% more abundant and Hololena nedra (Agelenidae) more than 2.5 fold more abundant than under night sampling. Daytime …

Keeping The Music Alive: Using The "Grief And Hope Box" With Adult Offenders With Co-Occurring Mental Health And Substance Use Issues, Robert Gee, Paul R. Springer, George Bitar, Faith Drew, Chad Graff Jan 2005

Keeping The Music Alive: Using The "Grief And Hope Box" With Adult Offenders With Co-Occurring Mental Health And Substance Use Issues, Robert Gee, Paul R. Springer, George Bitar, Faith Drew, Chad Graff

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

Individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder (COD) present unique challenges for counselors. When individuals are incarcerated, they suffer unique forms of losses, including the loss and grief of their family members. In addition, they often struggle with stigma and cultural stereotypes that are oppressive and devastating. The purpose of this manuscript is to help counselors and clients access creativity in a manner that facilitates client self-disclosure about grief and loss related issues, leading to a more coherent personal narrative, increased social integration, and enhanced psychological and physiological health.

Thermodynamics Of Folding And Association Of Lattice-Model Proteins, Troy Cellmer, Dusan Bratko, John M. Prausnitz, Harvey Blanch Jan 2005

Thermodynamics Of Folding And Association Of Lattice-Model Proteins, Troy Cellmer, Dusan Bratko, John M. Prausnitz, Harvey Blanch

Chemistry Publications

Closely related to the “protein folding problem” is the issue of protein misfolding and aggregation. Proteinaggregation has been associated with the pathologies of nearly 20 human diseases and presents serious difficulties during the manufacture of pharmaceutical proteins. Computational studies of multiprotein systems have recently emerged as a powerful complement to experimental efforts aimed at understanding the mechanisms of proteinaggregation. We describe the thermodynamics of systems containing two lattice-model 64-mers. A parallel tempering algorithm abates problems associated with glassy systems and the weighted histogram analysis method improves statistical quality. The presence of a second chain has a substantial effect on single-chain …

Sustainable Market Development For Non Timber Forest Products In Pakistan, Abdul Latif, Zabta Khan Shinwari

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Non timber forest products (NTFPs) consist of goods of biological origin other than timber. Pakistan has great diversity in its relief feature, giving arise to unique floral compositions. 80% of the forest dwellers are dependent on NTFPs in one way or the other due to poverty. Forest dwellers rely on their indigenous knowledge for collecting, processing, packing, drying, marketing and consumption of various NTFPs. Some of the important NTFPs produced in Pakistan are: morels, honey, fruits and nuts, vegetable, condiments and spices, mazri palm, silk cocoon, and many others. 131 species are reported during the study. About 34% of local …

Metabolite Fingerprinting In Transgenic Nicotiana Tabacum Altered By The Escherichia Coli Glutamate Dehydrogenase Gene, R. Mungur, A. D. M. Glass, D. B. Goodenow, David A. Lightfoot Jan 2005

Metabolite Fingerprinting In Transgenic Nicotiana Tabacum Altered By The Escherichia Coli Glutamate Dehydrogenase Gene, R. Mungur, A. D. M. Glass, D. B. Goodenow, David A. Lightfoot

Articles

With about 200 000 phytochemicals in existence, identifying those of biomedical significance is a mammoth task. In the postgenomic era, relating metabolite fingerprints, abundances, and profiles to genotype is also a large task. Ion analysis using Fourier transformed ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) may provide a high-throughput approach to measure genotype dependency of the inferred metabolome if reproducible techniques can be established. Ion profile inferred metabolite fingerprints are coproducts. We used FT-ICR-MS-derived ion analysis to examine gdhA (glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH; EC 1.4.1.1)) transgenic Nicotiana tabacum (tobacco) carrying out altered glutamate, amino acid, and carbon metabolisms, that fundamentally alter plant …

Evaluation Of Methanobrevibacter Smithii As A Human-Specific Marker Of Fecal Pollution, Jennifer A. Ufnar, Shiao Y. Wang, R.D. Ellender Jan 2005

Evaluation Of Methanobrevibacter Smithii As A Human-Specific Marker Of Fecal Pollution, Jennifer A. Ufnar, Shiao Y. Wang, R.D. Ellender

Presentations

Microbial source tracking has historically focused on the origin of traditional enteric indicators including coliforms, enterococci, or Escherichia coli. Recently, questions of genetic variability and environmental persistence have encouraged researchers to search for additional animal specific indicators of fecal pollution. To date only eubacteria have been utilized as markers of human and animal-specific pollution. In this study we developed a molecular primer pair specific for Methanobrevibacter smithii, a methanogen found only in the human intestine. PCR primers for the nifH gene of M. smithii were designed, tested, and used to detect the presence or absence of the organism in fecal …

Long-Term Persistence Of Coral Assemblages On The Flower Garden Banks, Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico: Implications For Science And Management, Richard B. Aronson, William F. Precht, Thaddeus J.T. Murdoch, Martha L. Robbart

Gulf of Mexico Science

The coral reefs of the Flower Garden Banks (FGB) are among the most sensitive biological communities in U.S. Federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico. In 1973, the Minerals Management Service (MMS) established a program of protective activities at those reefs. The MMS and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have been monitoring coral populations on a long-term basis to detect incipient changes caused by oil and gas activities. The results also help in explaining the widespread degradation of reef ecosystems observed in the Caribbean region over the past few decades. Two sites, each 100 X 100 m and …

Platoma Chrysymenioides Sp. Nov. (Schizymeniaceae), And Sebdenia Integra Sp. Nov. (Sebdeniaceae), Two New Red Algal Species From The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, With A Phylogenetic Assessment Of The Cryptonemiales Complex (Rhodophyta), Brigitte Gavio, Emma Hickerson, Suzanne Fredericq

Gulf of Mexico Science

Recent collecting cruises conducted in the Northwestern Gulf of Mexico at 40- to 90-m depth revealed a diverse deepwater flora that is dominated by members of the Cryptonemiales complex. In this article, we describe two species new to science, Platoma chrysymenioides sp. nov. (Schizymeniaceae) and Sebdenia integra sp. nov. (Sebdeniaceae). Chloroplast-encoded rbcL sequence analyses corroborate morphological and nuclear small subunit ribosomal RNA gene data that the red algal orders Cryptonemiales and Rhodymeniales are closely related. The allied order Nemastomatales is strongly supported to include the Nemastomataceae and Schizymeniaceae, but the phylogenetic position of the Sebdeniaceae and Tsengiaceae remains equivocal. …
