This article gives an overview over the methods used in the low--level analysis of gene expression data generated using DNA microarrays. This type of experiment allows to determine relative levels of nucleic acid abundance in a set of tissues or cell populations for thousands of transcripts or loci simultaneously. Careful statistical design and analysis are essential to improve the efficiency and reliability of microarray experiments throughout the data acquisition and analysis process. This includes the design of probes, the experimental design, the image analysis of microarray scanned images, the normalization of fluorescence intensities, the assessment of the quality of microarray …

Case Study: Attitudes Of Rural High School Students And Teachers Regarding Inclusion, Christina Short, Barbara N. Martin

The Rural Educator

This case study was intended to explore the premise that the perceptions of the stakeholders regarding inclusion should enhance the implementation of the process in a k-12 rural setting. Therefore, rural high school students’ and rural general education and special education teachers’ perceptions of inclusion provided the primary focus of this case study. Data analysis identified that while overall general education teachers supported the idea of inclusion they did not believe that they were trained. Additionally, the students supported the concept of inclusion when they were allowed choice in which classroom they were placed and if the teacher allowed choice …

We developed the Spiritual Outcome Scale (SOS) to measure the spiritual outcomes of psychotherapy from a theistic spiritual perspective. A 17-item version of the SOS was found to have adequate reliability and validity in a sample of college students. Three factors emerged from the analyses that corresponded to subscales labeled Love of God, Love of Others, and Love of Self. Correlations with measures of psychological outcomes were statistically significant. In subsequent analyses, the SOS was administered over an 8-week period to a sample of inpatient women with eating disorders and to two samples from inpatient psychological clinics in Germany. The …

To assess treatment efficacy in clinical trials, certain clinical outcomes are repeatedly measured for same subject over time. They can be regarded as function of time. The difference in their mean functions between the treatment arms usually characterises a treatment effect. Due to the potential existence of subject-specific treatment effectiveness lag and saturation times, erosion of treatment effect in the difference may occur during the observation period of time. Instead of using ad hoc parametric or purely nonparametric time-varying coefficients in statistical modeling, we first propose to model the treatment effectiveness durations, which are the varying time intervals between the …

Doxorubicin executes apoptosis, a process known to produce leakage of cytochrome c and opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pores. To define the loss of mitochondrial function by apoptosis, we monitored cellular respiration during continuous exposure to doxorubicin. A phosphorescence analyzer capable of stable measurements over at least 5 h was used to measure [O(2)]. In solutions containing glucose and cells, [O(2)] declined linearly with time, showing that the kinetics of oxygen consumption was zero order. Complete inhibition of oxygen consumption by cyanide indicated that oxidations occurred in the respiratory chain. A decline in the rate of respiration was evident …

Intercultural Human Rights thesis (May, 2005), awarded the best student paper prize for 2005 by the Institute of Policy Sciences at Yale University (in October, 2005), after analysing past and curent issues regarding the culture wars controversy of "reparations", proposes a specific process for establishing Truth and Reconciliation regarding the legacy of slavery in the United States. The proposal recommends commissions in each Federal judicial district under the supervision of a U.S. Slavery Justice and Reconciliation Commission (USSJRC), calling for "America's 21st Century Contract with Africa and African-Americans".
