Relationship Among Genes Conferring Partial Resistance To Leaf Rust (Puccinia Triticina) In Wheat Lines Ci 13227 And L-574-1., Jeffery S. Lehman, Karin A. Hanson, Gregory Shaner

Biology and Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

This study describes the segregation of genes for resistance to the fungus Puccinia triticinain a cross between partially resistant wheat lines L-574-1 and CI 13227 with two and four genes for resistance, respectively. The objectives of this study were to use parental, F1, F2, and backcross populations to quantify maternal effects, degree of dominance, and transgressive segregation, and to determine whether CI 13227 and L-574-1 share any resistance genes for long latent period or small uredinia. In two experiments conducted in the greenhouse, the uppermost leaf of adult wheat plants was inoculated prior to heading with P. triticina. On days …

Beams of x rays in the kiloelectronvolt energy range have been produced from laser-matter interaction. Here, energetic electrons are accelerated by a laser wakefield, and experience betatron oscillations in an ion channel formed in the wake of the intense femtosecond laser pulse. Experiments using a 50 TW laser (30 fs duration) are described, as well as comparisons with numerical simulations. These results pave the way of a new generation of radiation in the x-ray spectral range, with a high collimation and an ultrafast pulse duration, produced by the use of compact laser system.

Exact Bounds For Interval And Fuzzy Functions Under Monotonicity Constraints, With Potential Applications To Biostratigraphy, Emil Platon, Kavitha Tupelly, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott A. Starks, Karen Villaverde

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The age of fossil species in samples recovered from a well that penetrates an undisturbed sequence of sedimentary rocks increases with depth. The results of biostratigraphic analysis of such a sequence consist of several age-depth values -- both known with interval (or fuzzy) uncertainty -- and we would like to find, for each possible depth, the interval of the possible values of the corresponding age. A similar problem of bounding an intervally (fuzzily) defined function under monotonicity constraint occurs in many other application areas. In this paper, we provide an efficient algorithm for solving this problem.

Opinion: Avian Brains And A New Understanding Of Vertebrate Brain Evolution, Gerald E. Hough, The Avian Brain Nomenclature Consortium Feb 2005

Opinion: Avian Brains And A New Understanding Of Vertebrate Brain Evolution, Gerald E. Hough, The Avian Brain Nomenclature Consortium

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

We believe that names have a powerful influence on the experiments we do and the way in which we think. For this reason, and in the light of new evidence about the function and evolution of the vertebrate brain, an international consortium of neuroscientists has reconsidered the traditional, 100-year-old terminology that is used to describe the avian cerebrum. Our current understanding of the avian brain — in particular the neocortex-like cognitive functions of the avian pallium — requires a new terminology that better reflects these functions and the homologies between avian and mammalian brains.

Hybrid Xerogel Films As Novel Coatings For Antifouling And Fouling Release, Ying Tang, John A. Finlay, Gregory L. Kowalke, Anne E. Meyer, Frank V. Bright, Maureen E. Callow, James A. Callow, Dean E. Wendt, Michael R. Detty

Biological Sciences

Hybrid sol-gel-derived xerogel films prepared from 45/55 (mol ratio) n-propyltrimethoxysilane (C3-TMOS)/tetramethylorthosilane (TMOS), 2/98 (mol ratio) bis[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]-ethylenediamine (enTMOS)/tetraethylorthosilane (TEOS), 50/50 (mol ratio) n-octyltriethoxysilane (C8-TEOS)/TMOS, and 50/50 (mol ratio) 3,3,3-trifluoropropyltrimethoxysilane (TFP-TMOS)/TMOS were found to inhibit settlement of zoospores of the marine fouling alga Ulva (syn. Enteromorpha) relative to settlement on acid-washed glass and give greater release of settled zoospores relative to glass upon exposure to pressure from a water jet. The more hydrophobic 50/50 C8-TEOS/TMOS xerogel films had the lowest critical surface tension by comprehensive contact angle analysis and gave significantly greater release of 8-day Ulva sporeling biomass after exposure to …

Reflection And Cognitive Strategy Instruction: Modeling Active Learning For Pre-Service Teachers, Barbara C. Palmer, C. Glennon Rowell, Mary Alice Brooks Feb 2005

Reflection And Cognitive Strategy Instruction: Modeling Active Learning For Pre-Service Teachers, Barbara C. Palmer, C. Glennon Rowell, Mary Alice Brooks

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Reading methodology courses, like other courses in college, are often one-dimensional when it comes to instructional delivery systems. Too often, "teacher talk" that elicits far too little reflection prevails. This practice can be changed with activities calling for students to construct knowledge from their experiences, thus following basic tenets of constructivism. The purpose of this article is to discuss how pre-service teachers can be taught to think beyond strategies in methodology and reflect upon language itself Three instructional strategies - semantic feature analysis, fictitious writing systems activities, and nonsense story analysis - are examples of ways college professors can get …

Integrated Fisheries Management Report Western Rock Lobster Resource., Department Of Fisheries Feb 2005

Integrated Fisheries Management Report Western Rock Lobster Resource., Department Of Fisheries

Fisheries Management Papers

This report is the first in a series of Integrated Fisheries Management (IFM) reports required under the 2004 Government Policy on IFM. Under this policy, the Executive Director of Fisheries is required to approve a sustainability report for each fishery, which includes a clear statement on the harvest level. The sustainable harvest level is that total catch, or catch range, that is to be allocated among the various user groups identified for that particular fishery. These IFM reports will assist in the process of allocating explicit shares in the use of Western Australia’s fish resources. They do not establish the …

Functional Specialization Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Cytosolic Thioredoxin H1 In The Response To Alkylation-Induced Dna Damage, Nandita Sarkar, Stephane Lemaire, Danxia Wu-Scharf, Emmanuelle Issakidis-Bourguet, Heriberto D. Cerutti Feb 2005

Functional Specialization Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Cytosolic Thioredoxin H1 In The Response To Alkylation-Induced Dna Damage, Nandita Sarkar, Stephane Lemaire, Danxia Wu-Scharf, Emmanuelle Issakidis-Bourguet, Heriberto D. Cerutti

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

DNA damage occurs as a by-product of intrinsic cellular processes, like DNA replication, or as a consequence of exposure to genotoxic agents. Organisms have evolved multiple mechanisms to avoid, tolerate, or repair DNA lesions. To gain insight into these processes, we have isolated mutants hypersensitive to DNA damaging agents in the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. One mutant, Ble-1, showed decreased survival when it was treated with methyl methanesulfonate (MMS), bleomycin, or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) but behaved like the wild type when it was exposed to UVC irradiation. Ble-1 carries an extensive chromosomal deletion that includes …

Structure Of The P115rhogef Rgrgs Domain-Galpha13/I1 Chimera Complex Suggests Convergent Evolution Of A Gtpase Activator, Zhe Chen, William D. Singer, Paul C. Sternweis, Stephen R. Sprang

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

p115RhoGEF, a guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) for Rho GTPase, is also a GTPase-activating protein (GAP) for G12 and G13 heterotrimeric Galpha subunits. The GAP function of p115RhoGEF resides within the N-terminal region of p115RhoGEF (the rgRGS domain), which includes a module that is structurally similar to RGS (regulators of G-protein signaling) domains. We present here the crystal structure of the rgRGS domain of p115RhoGEF in complex with a chimera of Galpha13 and Galphai1. Two distinct surfaces of rgRGS interact with Galpha. The N-terminal betaN-alphaN hairpin of rgRGS, rather than its RGS module, forms intimate contacts with the catalytic site …

Minimising The Cost Of Future Stock Monitoring, And Assessment Of The Potential For Increased Yields, From The Oceanic Snapper, Pagrus Auratus, Stock Off Shark Bay, Michael J. Moran, Peter Stephenson, Daniel J. Gaughan, Nadia E. Tapp, Jenny Moore Feb 2005

Tapp, Jenny Moore

Fisheries Research Reports

The investment in this project has resulted in a substantially more extensive set of age composition data than would have otherwise been possible. This in turn has underpinned stock assessment modeling that has provided the basis for determining that the commercial fishery for snapper in Shark Bay needed a substantial decrease the total allowable catch. The modeling was able to determine that the stock was at a low size following a period of low recruitment during the late 1990s. The suspected low recruitment, evident once the age date were collated, and anticipated negative effects on the stock were both quantitatively …

Development Of A Personal Diet Plan Database Application For Persons With Severe Food Allergies, Heather Suzanne Ward Feb 2005

Development Of A Personal Diet Plan Database Application For Persons With Severe Food Allergies, Heather Suzanne Ward

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This project will research, analyze, design, and implement a computerized system that will assist patients in creating a personal diet plan based upon a "rotation diet." This diet, specifically designed for patients with severe food allergies, requires that a patient may only eat a particular food every n days (where n is any number), and foods from the same biological food family every n days. Currently, patients use either pen-and-paper or a computerized spreadsheet to create weekly or monthly food meal plans for the diet plan. The meal plans are usually transferred by hand to their daily or weekly shopping …

The Biter Bit: Unknowable Dangers, The Third Restatement, And The Reinstatement Of Liability Without Fault, Ellen Wertheimer Feb 2005

The Biter Bit: Unknowable Dangers, The Third Restatement, And The Reinstatement Of Liability Without Fault, Ellen Wertheimer

Working Paper Series

This article argues that the Third Restatement of Products Liability, far from accomplishing its goal of eliminating strict liability for products, actually caused its revival. Prior to the adoption of the Third Restatement, many jurisdictions had gradually retreated from the strict products liability of Section 402A of the Second Restatement of Torts. The Third Restatement caused the courts to confront their own incremental processes and, in refusing the adopt the Third Restatement, to reinstate Section 402A of the Second Restatement in a much purer form.

Drought Effects On Water Quality In The South Platte River Basin, Colorado, Lori A. Sprague Feb 2005

Drought Effects On Water Quality In The South Platte River Basin, Colorado, Lori A. Sprague

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Twenty-three stream sites representing a range of forested, agricultural, and urban land uses were sampled in the South Platte River Basin of Colorado from July through September 2002 to characterize water quality during drought conditions. With a few exceptions, dissolved ammonia, Kjeldahl nitrogen, total phosphorus, and dissolved orthophosphate concentrations were similar to seasonal historical levels in all land use areas during the drought. At some agricultural sites, decreased dilution of irrigation return flow may have contributed to higher concentrations of some nutrient species, increased primary productivity, and higher dissolved oxygen concentrations. At some urban sites, decreased dilution of base flow …
