Entertainment Psychology: Bypassing Treatment Resistance In Emotionally Disturbed Adolescent Males, Ryan Coon Feb 2005

Entertainment Psychology: Bypassing Treatment Resistance In Emotionally Disturbed Adolescent Males, Ryan Coon

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Emotionally-disturbed adolescent males, particularly those diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder, are notoriously resistant to traditional forms of psychotherapy. Simultaneously, adolescent males are the target market for entertainment companies that produce products via multiple entertainment venues (e.g., comic books, card games, and video games). This dissertation is the first step in synthesizing psychotherapy with entertainment venues in order to bypass treatment resistance in emotionally-disturbed adolescent males. The entertainment venue of focus for this dissertation is a comic book series. The goal of the comic books is to entertain while promoting therapeutic healing. The therapeutic value entails having multiple …

Production Of Ammonia By Tritrichomonas Foetus And Trichomonas Vaginalis, Yekaterina Kleydman, Nigel Yarlett, Thomas Gorrell Feb 2005

Production Of Ammonia By Tritrichomonas Foetus And Trichomonas Vaginalis, Yekaterina Kleydman, Nigel Yarlett, Thomas Gorrell

Honors College Theses

Production of ammonia is difficult to find among the various studies of amino acid metabolism in protozoa. Several studies suggest that catabolism of arginine to ammonium is important for the growth of trichomonads. Trichomonads are amitochondriate zooflagellates that thrive under microaerophilic and anaerobic conditions. We were able to detect accumulation of ammonium ions and ammonia in cultures of Tritrichomonas foetus and Trichomonas vaginalis including those resistant to metronidazole. Ammonium ions and ammonia were detected using the indophenol colorimetric method. Aerobic overnight cultures had 0.9 mM of soluble ammonium (NH4+ and NH3) or a 20% greater concentration of ammonium relative to …

Interstate Recognition Of Same-Sex Marriages And Civil Unions: A Handbook For Judges, Andrew Koppelman Feb 2005

Interstate Recognition Of Same-Sex Marriages And Civil Unions: A Handbook For Judges, Andrew Koppelman

Public Law and Legal Theory Papers

Same-sex marriage is here. Massachusetts now recognizes such marriages, and increasing numbers of same-sex couples have married. Other states have virtually the same status: Vermont recognizes "civil unions," and California recognizes "domestic partnerships," that have virtually all the rights of marriage. Are these statuses exportable? Will same-sex unions be recognized in other states? The answer should not be mysterious. There is a well developed body of law on the question of whether and when to recognize extraterritorial marriages that are contrary to the forum's public policy. Assuming that courts decide to follow that law, the answer is, it depends. This …
