Soil Surveys: A Window To The Subsurface, Douglas A. Wysocki, P. J. Schoeneberger, H. E. Lagarry Mar 2005

Soil Surveys: A Window To The Subsurface, Douglas A. Wysocki, P. J. Schoeneberger, H. E. Lagarry

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Soils and underlying parent materials form a continuous system we must understand and manage in total. Numerous concerns (e.g., water quality, on-site waste disposal, landfill placement, and nutrient or pesticide movement) require an integrated knowledge and understanding of soil, the soil-to-substratum transition, and the deeper substratum. Soil C-horizons can exceed the thickness of the overlying A and B-horizons and contain unique morphological properties. The subsolum including C-horizons receives less descriptive emphasis than upper soil horizons. Soil scientists map and classify soils mainly on A and B-horizon properties. Soil forming and hydrologic processes that impart morphological features, however, extend considerably below …

The Reference-Dose Place Conditioning Procedure Yields A Graded Dose-Effect Function, Rick A. Bevins Mar 2005

The Reference-Dose Place Conditioning Procedure Yields A Graded Dose-Effect Function, Rick A. Bevins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

A major criticism of the place conditioning procedure for studying conditioned drug reward is that it is relatively insensitive to large quantitative shifts in drug dose (i.e., dose effects are all or none). Experiment 1 demonstrated this lack of sensitivity using a wide range of intravenous (IV) cocaine doses (O.1, 0.3, 0.45, 0.6, 0.9, or 1.2 mg/kg). Rats had cocaine repeatedly paired with one distinct end compartment of a 3 compartment apparatus; vehicle was administered in the other end compartment. In a subsequent drug-free choice test, the 0.45 to 1.2 mg/kg doses of cocaine conditioned a place preference. The magnitude …

Algal Succession And Nutrient Dynamics In Elephant Butte Reservoir, Eric J. Nielsen Mar 2005

Algal Succession And Nutrient Dynamics In Elephant Butte Reservoir, Eric J. Nielsen

Theses and Dissertations

A water quality model was created for Elephant Butte Reservoir, New Mexico to understand nutrient dynamics and algal response during a three year period. The model chosen for this study was CE-QUAL-W2 because of its proven ability to represent hydrodynamics and the ability to represent multiple algal groups. Elephant Butte has been subject to large algal blooms. This study examined the phosphorus loading into the reservoir to see if it could sustain the observed algal growth. Data showed that the amount of bioavailable phosphorus was more than enough to support large blooms. This study also was an initial attempt to …

In-Fiber Optical Devices Based On D-Fiber, Kevin H. Smith Mar 2005

In-Fiber Optical Devices Based On D-Fiber, Kevin H. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents the fabrication and analysis of in-fiber devices based on elliptical core D-shaped optical fiber. Devices created inside optical fibers are attractive for a variety of reasons including low loss, high efficiency, self-alignment, light weight, multiplexibility, and resistance to electromagnetic interference. This work details how D-fiber can be used as a platform for a variety of devices and describes the creation and performance of two of these devices: an in-fiber polymer waveguide and a surface relief fiber Bragg grating. In D-fiber the core is very close to the flat side of the ‘D’ shape. This proximity allows access …

Optimization Of The Architecture Of Neural Networks Using A Deletion/Substitution/Addition Algorithm, Blythe Durbin, Sandrine Dudoit, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Neural networks are a popular machine learning tool, particularly in applications such as the prediction of protein secondary structure. However, overfitting poses an obstacle to their effective use for this and other problems. Due to the large number of parameters in a typical neural network, one may obtain a network fit that perfectly predicts the learning data yet fails to generalize to other data sets. One way of reducing the size of the parameter space is to alter the network topology so that some edges are removed; however, it is often not immediately apparent which edges should be eliminated. We …

Logan Buck, Olivia Mcauliffe, Nicole Souther, Alleson Dobson, Tri Duong, Michael Callanan, Sonja Lick, Alice Hamrick, Raul J. Cano, Todd R. Klaenhammer

Biological Sciences

Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM is a probiotic bacterium that has been produced commercially since 1972. The complete genome is 1,993,564 nt and devoid of plasmids. The average GC content is 34.71% with 1,864 predicted ORFs, of which 72.5% were functionally classified. Nine phage-related integrases were predicted, but no complete prophages were found. However, three unique regions designated as potential autonomous units (PAUs) were identified. These units resemble a unique structure and bear characteristics of both plasmids and phages. Analysis of the three PAUs revealed the presence of two R/M systems and a prophage maintenance system killer protein. A spacers interspersed direct …

Um34 In Selenocysteine Trna Is Required For The Expression Of Stress-Related Selenoproteins In Mammals, Bradley A. Carlson, Xue-Ming Xu, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield Mar 2005

Um34 In Selenocysteine Trna Is Required For The Expression Of Stress-Related Selenoproteins In Mammals, Bradley A. Carlson, Xue-Ming Xu, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Selenium is an essential micronutrient in the diet of mammals and has many health benefits. Selenium-containing proteins are responsible for most, if not all, of these benefits. This element is incorporated into protein as selenocysteine (Sec), the 21st amino acid in the genetic code. There are two species of Sec tRNA in mammalian cells that differ by a single 2’-O-hydroxymethyl group on the ribosyl moiety at position 34 (Um34). The relationship between this modification and selenoprotein synthesis was examined in mice in which the wild type Sec tRNA gene was replaced with a mutant Sec tRNA transgene incapable of …

Identification And Expression Analysis Of Two Inorganic C-And N-Responsive Genes Encoding Novel And Distinct Molecular Forms Of Eukaryotic Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxylase In The Green Microalga Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Tarlan G. Mamedov, Eric R. Moellering, Raymond Chollet Mar 2005

Moellering, Raymond Chollet

Papers in Biochemical Engineering

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC [Ppc]) has been previously purified and characterized in biochemical and immunological terms from two green microalgae, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Selenastrum minutum. The findings indicate that these algae possess at least two distinct PEPC enzyme-forms, homotetrameric Class1 and heteromeric Class-2 that differ significantly from each other and their plant and prokaryotic counterparts. Surprisingly, however, green-algal PEPC has been unexplored to date in molecular terms. This study reports the molecular cloning of the two Ppc genes in C. reinhardtii (CrPpc1, CrPpc2), each of which is transcribed in vivo and encodes a fully active, recombinant PEPC that lacks the regulatory, …

Role Of Hydrogen Bonds In The Fast Dynamics Of Binary Glasses Of Trehalose And Glycerol: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study, Taner E. Dirama, Gustavo A. Carri, Alexei P. Sokolov

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

Trehalose-glycerol mixtures are known to be effective in the long time preservation of proteins. However, the microscopic mechanism of their effective preservation abilities remains unclear. In this article we present a molecular dynamics simulation study of the short time, less than 1 ns, dynamics of four trehalose-glycerol mixtures at temperatures below the glass transition temperature. We found that a mixture of 5% glycerol and 95% trehalose has the most suppressed short time dynamics (fast dynamics). This result agrees with the experimental analysis of the mean-square displacement of the hydrogen atoms, as measured via neutron scattering, and correlates with the experimentally …

Water Justice In South Africa: Natural Resources Policy At The Intersection Of Human Rights, Economics, & Political Power, Rose Francis Mar 2005

Water Justice In South Africa: Natural Resources Policy At The Intersection Of Human Rights, Economics, & Political Power, Rose Francis

ExpressO

This paper analyzes water as a social justice issue in South Africa, a nation that has undergone tremendous political and legal transformations over the last fifteen years, but whose population nonetheless continues to suffer from severe inequities in access to freshwater resources. In light of growing water scarcity worldwide, this paper highlights that legal treatment of water resources has significant socioeconomic and distributive justice impacts, even in progressive constitutional democracies that have embraced principles of human rights and international legal norms. The paper explores historical changes in South African water law and evaluates the current political and legal status of …
