Student Perspectives On Rubric-Referenced Assessment, Heidi L. Andrade, Ying Du Apr 2005

Student Perspectives On Rubric-Referenced Assessment, Heidi L. Andrade, Ying Du

Educational & Counseling Psychology Faculty Scholarship

This study suggests that students use rubrics to support their own learning and academic performance. In focus groups, fourteen undergraduate students discussed the ways in which they used rubrics to plan an approach to an assignment, check their work, and guide or reflect on feedback from others. The students said that using rubrics helped them focus their efforts, produce work of higher quality, earn a better grade, and feel less anxious about an assignment. Their comments also revealed that most of the students tend not to read a rubric in its entirety, and that some may perceive of a rubric …

Continuing Analysis Of Phytoplankton Nutrient Limitation In Farmington Bay And The Great Salt Lake, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Amy M. Marcarelli Apr 2005

Continuing Analysis Of Phytoplankton Nutrient Limitation In Farmington Bay And The Great Salt Lake, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh, Amy M. Marcarelli

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Farmington Bay is a nutrient-enriched, highly eutrophic embayment of the Great Salt Lake. The highly variable salinity of the bay influences what species of plankton can survive there. Previous analyses suggested that cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) may not be able to survive or fix atmospheric nitrogen at high salinities, thus maintaining the lake in a nitrogen-limited state. To determine the interacting influence of nutrients and salinity on the growth and nitrogen fixation of plankton we performed a 28-day bioassay with water from Farmington and Gilbert Bays in October 2004. We tested the response of the plankton to additions of nitrogen (N) …

Readings In Place: Recent Publications In Southwestern Literature And Studies, Thomas Lynch Apr 2005

Readings In Place: Recent Publications In Southwestern Literature And Studies, Thomas Lynch

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The "Southwest" is nearly always defined along the intersection of two axes, one cultural and the other natural. Certain characteristics of these two axes are obvious in the six works considered here. Culturally, the region is most distinguished from the rest of the US by the existence of two enduring ethnic communities, the indigenous and the Hispanic, with the presence of the Mexican border exerting a powerful influence. In very different ways, Molly H. Mullin’s Culture in the Market Place: Gender, Art, and Value in the American Southwest, Audrey Goodman’s Translating Southwestern Landscapes: The Making of an Anglo Literary …

North American Bird Strike Advisory System: Strategic Plan, Russell P. Defusco , Usaf (Ret.), Michel J. Hovan, James T. Harper , Lt. Col., Usaf, Kurt A. Heppard

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 7th (2005)

The international aviation community recognizes the high human and economic costs associated with bird strikes. Hundreds of lives and millions of dollars have been lost in recent years because of this problem. Notably, aviation experts in North America recognize the importance and availability of potential solutions for this problem. Several models and systems such and the USAF’s Bird Avoidance Model (BAM) and the Avian Hazard Advisory System (AHAS) as well as the technological development of advanced radar and communications systems have made great progress in addressing the problem of bird strikes. However, many have argued that further and much greater …

Differences In Teacher Qualifications And The Relationship To Middle School Student Achievement In Mathematics, Carrie R. Ferguson

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to compare mathematics teacher preparation and experience to the achievement of middle school students (grades 6–8) on the mathematics section of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). Using a theoretical framework, the research examined the extent to which the teacher qualification variables were related to the student achievement. Measures of teacher qualifications included four independent variables: (a) number of mathematics content hours, (b) level of teaching certification, (c) number of years teaching experience, and (d) number of years teaching middle school/junior high mathematics. Participants in this causal-comparative study included 97 teachers and …

Biosensing With Microcantilever-Based Sensors, Xiaodong Yan Apr 2005

Biosensing With Microcantilever-Based Sensors, Xiaodong Yan

Doctoral Dissertations

Microcantilevers provide an ideal platform for biosensors. The micron-sized transducer brings several advantages, such as high sensitivity, small sample quantity for analysis, portability, implantable sensor devices, and the ability to be mass produced and integrated into standard microelectronic processing technologies like complementary metal oxide seminconductors (CMOS).

The objective of this research is to investigate and develop modification methods of microcanitlevers for biosensing applications.

Two microcantilever modification methods were investigated. They are self-assembly monolayer method and layer-by-layer method. A fundamental procedure for modification of microcantilevers using the layer-by-layer approach was developed for the first time in this research. These modification methods …

Vitality And Modernity: Defining The “Folk” In Early Twentieth Century China, Jing Li Apr 2005

Vitality And Modernity: Defining The “Folk” In Early Twentieth Century China, Jing Li

East Asian Studies Faculty Publications

As usual, the 2005 Chinese Rooster New Year celebrations in Beijing highlighted the annual Earth Temple Fair (Ditan Miaohui) as an indispensable attraction. In recent years, this entertaining space featuring red lanterns, lion dances, and revived folk performances has been widely and officially advocated as an occasion and place to appreciate “national culture (minzu wenhua)” and to experience “folk culture (minsu wenhua).” In the commodified and globalized metropolitan capital of the nation, the Fair forms a symbolic space where traditionality is celebrated to label national identity. Adolescents' Behavior In The Presence Of Interparental Hostility: Developmental And Emotion Regulatory Influences, Marc S. Schulz, Robert J. Waldinger, Stuart T. Hauser, Joseph P. Allen Apr 2005

Adolescents' Behavior In The Presence Of Interparental Hostility: Developmental And Emotion Regulatory Influences, Marc S. Schulz, Robert J. Waldinger, Stuart T. Hauser, Joseph P. Allen

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Within-family covariation between interparental hostility and adolescent behavior across three interactions over a 2-year period was explored in a sample that included 37 typical adolescents and 35 adolescents recently hospitalized for psychiatric difficulties. More interparental hostility across the three interactions was associated with more adolescent hostility and more positive engagement (at a trend level) regardless of psychiatric background. Parent-to-child hostility in each interaction mediated the link for adolescent hostility but not for positive adolescent engagement. Emotion regulation capacities and age were linked to variability in adolescents' behavior in the presence of interparental conflict. In interactions with more interparental hostility, adolescents …

U.S. Economic Sanctions Against North Korea: An Unsuccessful And Sanctimonious Policy Ripe For Modification, Karen M. Takishita

Washington International Law Journal

The United States designated North Korea as a state supporter of terrorism under the Export Administration Act of 1979, after the North Korean bombing of a Korean Airlines flight in 1987. As a result, the United States imposed tough economic sanctions against North Korea. Today, North Korea retains the designation of a state supporter of terrorism as a result of its weapons trade, even though it is not known to have sponsored any terrorist acts since 1987. The United States' designation of a state as a supporter of terrorism is arbitrary as no standard is set out in the U.S. …
